electric car

Ok i want to build an electric hybrid system my first question is ac or dc power. i want to build a paralleled drive system. that uses the stock motor to drive on the highway with maybe a little help from the electric motors. here are my thoughts start with a f250 powerstroke diesel crew cab truck, install a divorced t case and new drive shaft, hook the electric motor to the t case front axle output. the goal is to use the space by the tool boxes to fit the batteries and later update the alternator. the goal here is a hybrid that can still haul what a normal truck can but run purely on electricity when in town

Children's Electric Car

I started to build a pedal car for my granddaughter and fell victim to "Project Creep". What started off as a simple, standard style pedal car modeled on a Type 59 Bugatti grew to a 6' long soapbox style car that will need an electric motor to move it.  I am a DIY guy and i have the plans, materials lists (it will be wood) and motivation.  What I don't have is a parts list for the electrical components nor do i have any idea how big the motor should be, e.g. 500W, 750W,750 gigawatts.  I wish there was just a kit that had all the components from accelerator pedals, gears, motor and a way to connect the whole thing to the 16" bicycle tires.  I don't need it to go 20MPH (she'll be 4 by the time I'm finished) but i don't want flimsy - i tend to overbuild things: why use two bolts when three will do? So, the question is what do i need and where do i get it - the first part is the most important.  I promise i will document the whole project with pics and words from concept to test drive - but i need help.

Inflatable electric car

Inflatable structures have always fascinated me. They can achieve amazing strength to weight ratios, and only take up space when required. At Instructables, I often sit on an inflated ball!: https://www.instructables.com/id/Ergonomic-work-station/ So, I've fantasized about an inflated car that's just as safe as something more massive, but weighs a mere fraction -- deflate to store or park! XP Vehicles is stepping up and trying to make it real with a direct-ship sub-$5000 electric car: A baffled pressure tube system (think Zodiac rubber boat) provides the actual supporting and protective structure of the vehicle. How safe is it? Recall that NASA recently threw tens of millions of dollars of ultra-sensitive electronics onto the surface of Mars from nearly a mile up and then bounced that same delicate gear for over a mile over boulders and everything worked flawlessly. This was due to the instruments being shrouded in an already expanded inflatable housing that has served as the model for the Whisper body structure. Anyone looking at the warnings on their visor can be concerned about the dangers during airbag inflation so XP simply built a vehicle entirely out of next-generation, always inflated, safety airbags. The engineers for the Whisper are confident you can drive it off a 25-foot cliff without serious injury to its passengers. They claim this is the safest car ever designed for drivers, passengers and pedestrians.Initially designed for the Southeast and Western Asian markets, the car will float in an emergency such as a flood or tsunami and can be assembled by any two people of reasonable competence. The vehicle, similar in appearance to rounded edged sports cars, will be configurable online by each customer much like you build and customize personal computers online today at various major retailers. Colors, trims, features, and styles will be user-configurable on 4 different body-types.

selfcontained electric car?

I had a few ideas on how to make more efficient cars. First off why is it we have NO generators being used while stuffs rotating. Take a small generator with a rubber drive point...like there a chain or belt would go... and place that on the tires. This is a friction driven generator which means that it would not work well in the rain. These...if done right... could keep the car running and then keep the battery charged. Using the battery only for stops. I also think we need to figure out a way to put a coil in the drive train somewhere. Making it to where when the car stops the coil is wound tight, when the car takes off again the coil could unwind and help the car take off. this feature added to gasoline engines would help cut the cost of gas greatly, not to mention emissions.

Electric car battieries

Hello, I need some help. With gas prices getting to an excess of $3.50 in Texas, I have decided to make the switch to electric cars. I was watching a show on TLC the other day about a guy in California who converts cars to electric. He converted an old heavy-as-can-be Camaro into an electric car that could peel out. I found a website that sells conversion kits for all kinds of cars called Cloud EV. I want to buy the heavy car kit, but the only snag I hit was this: I need 60 batteries to get a day's power, but it will cost about $3000 to $5100 (1949.6978 Euros to 3314.48625 Euros)!!! Can anyone help me find a cheaper source of batteries? Car batteries are just to expensive. Thanks.

Nissan invests in electric cars

Motor-manufacturer Nissan have announced a £200 million ($330 million) investment in a factory intended to produce lithium ion batteries for electric cars.Along with the news from Nissan, Peter Mandelson (Business Secretary) said a "low-carbon economic area" would be established in the North East.As part of the project, 750 charging points would be installed across the region and a training centre specialising in the manufacture and maintenance of low-carbon vehicles would be set up. "The North East has distinguished itself as the first specialised region for ultra-low-carbon vehicles," Lord Mandelson said. The announcement from Nissan comes only days after its Japanese rival Toyota said it would start manufacturing the new Auris hybrid petrol-electric vehicle at its plant in Burnaston, Derbyshire from mid-2010. Electric mower

I want to convert my old gas mower to an electric mower. 12v batteries are easy enough, and there is plenty of info re solar charging systems. I'm stuck on sourcing the motor. I was wondering if a car starter motor would be sufficient for running a lawnmower? It's a 12v motor, has enough oomph to turn over up to 12 cylinders of american steel, and there are plenty of 'em out there in junkyards waiting to be recycled. Sounds good on paper. Anyone have any insight into why this is or ain't a good idea? Thx- Rev. Bucky

electric micro kart

I want to build a micro kart with a range of 10 miles at an average speed of about 5mph, with a reverse function. Iv been looking at blogs and Instructables for micro karts and DIY electric longboards hoping to directly copy the basic components of another project however all the projects iv found are for high speed machines that often need a bump/kick start and i need something that will happily run at consistently low speeds without an assisted start. I don't have the electronics knowhow to work out what combination of motor, battery and ESC i need but from what iv read it sounds like i might need an outrunner (?) type motor which is apparently good for low speeds and high torque. Iv been looking at the Turnigy motors on the Hobbyking website as they were recommended by a few blogs, i tried posting this question on their forums a week ago but got zero response. Could you take a look at their motor selection and recommend the appropriate combination of parts? Thanks

Starting a Class in Building Electric Cars

Hi Everyone! I've been very involved the last several years in DIY Clean Transportation at the ground level. I've built my own electric car, my own electric motorcycle, hybridized the car, and give talks at energy fairs, sustainability fairs, and post hundreds (literally, hundreds) of videos to YouTube teaching about these projects. I've also put lots of work into postings on Instructables teaching about these projects, and the audience here has been GREAT! I've also been donating my INSTRUCTIONAL DVDs to high schools, tech schools, and colleges for any teacher that will help start a class or extra-curricular at their educational institution. While I've got lots of requests from schools for the videos (and I'm going broke donating them!) I haven't heard back much on actual classes getting started. I think the reason why is that teachers don't have any SUPPORT MATERIALS. They need a curriculum, course outline, and workbooks to go with the video, so that any shop or science teacher has a ready-to-go "Class in a Box". I'm thinking about writing a workbook companion to go with my BUILD YOUR OWN ELECTRIC CAR instructional DVD which can be used by students as a text for a class. It would feature lessons, activities, and quizzes that would go along with the video. A teacher's curriculum would go with this as well. This might be a good thing to fund through Kickstarter or something similar. A small amount of money raised would go far in developing a workbook, and any money raised OVER that could be used to print workbooks and get "Class in a Box" donated to High Schools and Colleges. What are your thoughts? Do you like this idea? Is this the best way to get the most information out to the next generation of auto-builders and DIYer's? All input welcome! For more on this, see my blog.

Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle

The HE Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle It looks like an interesting concept car. Although, it might be hard to find somebody who wants to pedal it. I really like the solar panels on top, and how on the downhill, it charges a capacitor for energy. This HE Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle concept uses the power of your muscles as well electricity stored in the batteries. It allows smooth and constant velocity both uphill (with the help of the electric motor), as well as downhill (when the wheel acts as a generator and charges the batteries). The vehicle can turn 360 degrees maintaining stability all the time. Additional power is acquired from photovoltaic placed on top of the vehicle as well as during de-acceleration from regenerative braking. Elderly and handicapped people that are unable to provide enough kinetic energy can also charge the batteries directly from the grid.

Electric Motor Tricycle 6V4.5Ah

I bought a riding toy for my son and it's cool, but it doesn't have enough power sometimes.  It's fast enough in the house, but it gets stuck outside.  The plastic wheels tend to slip on rough surfaces and inclines, but I can address that issue at the wheels/tires to some degree.  However, the battery that came with it is a 6V4.5AH/20HR sealed lead-acid rechargeable battery (It has F1 contacts, so unless I change or adapt the wires/connectors, I think I need to stick with a battery that has these).  The AC-DC adapter has 6V DC 500mA output, but I think I could get a UNIVERSAL AC DC ADAPTER {1.5V 3V 4.5V 6V 9V 12V 500mA} that would work with a new battery. I'm hoping that I can increase the power noticeably but safely.  One constraint is the width of the battery area inside the "engine" compartment.  It fits the present battery (1.75 x 2.75 x 4), but I'll have to mod the compartment to fit a replacement that's more than slightly bigger. I've seen some 12V4.5AH batteries online, but most are larger in every dimension. Am I even on the right track thinking a higher voltage battery is what I need?  Could I use an NiMH or Li battery/batteries instead? What's the easiest, safest, cheapest route for this mod? Thanks, Dan

Electric bike band brakes.

Hi all. A few weeks ago I asked on here about batteries for my bike and got some very useful input, as a result I bought a set of batteries from great dealer who was not only able to supply batteries matched to my bike but also gave me a remarkably decent discount and delivered them in two days, they cost me almost £40.00 less than the ones I bought a few years ago and the bike is now running better than ever. I now have another problem I'm hoping to get some help with, the rear brake on my bike is a band brake which I suspect has not been changed since the bike was new, it still works but not nearly as well as it should so it's time to replace it with a new one. When I rang the importer and sole stockists of these bikes in the UK about some other replacement parts a few months ago I asked about a replacement brake and they are asking the outrageous sum of £38.00 plus VAT and shipping for one meaning I would be paying out around £57.00. I know these brakes are quite common so had a hunt around the web and I have found quite a few with prices ranging from £5.00 to £19.00 but have some questions about size. The casing of the brake on my bike around the drum is around 4 1/2" diameter I have found various sizes available some smaller some larger but looking at the way it is mounted it seems to me that I could use pretty much any size I wanted providing the pitch between the two holes used to mount the drum on the wheel is the same, unfortunately none of the brakes I have found gives details like this. Does anyone know about these type of brakes and if the mounting holes are the same standard pitch on all the sizes of drum? if so would I be correct in thinking I could mount any size brake I wished? if I can I would be tempted to increase the braking power by fitting a larger one than it currently has. Thanks in advance for your help. NG.

Power (Torque x Rpm) need to move 100kg car to 1.86 MPH/3 KMH in about 3 seconds?

I am planning to build the electric car. But having no experience in physics. My Electric car have following specification: -> 4 Wheel Car -> 100Kg car weight including Person weight -> Wheel size can be 4-8 inch I want to move the car on flat road (No incline) to about 3-4KMH / 1.86-2.48MPH in about 3-5 seconds. I want to know that how much power it needs to attain that speed. Also I want to know that how much power it needs to overcome rolling friction in order to move the car. I have the dc motor of 2kg.cm or 0.2N.M torque and 7k rpm, can I use this motor to attain that speed. Also please can someone tell me the formula according to my specification so I will alter the wheel size value to calculate the power needed to attain that speed. Also is the torque of 2kg.cm or 0.2N.M and 7k rpm is enough to move the car or I have to setup the gearing? If have to setup the gearing then can you please tell me the ratio. Thank  You!

Electric vehicle motor selection

As any one who has looked at my instructables knows whilst a school teacher I built a full sized electric racing car.https://www.instructables.com/id/Building-an-elect...This had a 250 watt DC motor over run to 500 watts - 20 amps at 24 volts .It was capable of running the car up to 25 - 30 MPH and using 2 car batteries drive for a couple of hours on the flat.Nowadays electric vehicles are all the rage. Looking at a few motores as small as 4000 watts are in use for city use where high speed isn't necessary. Now the question:https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-c580l-580kv-br...This motor intended for model cars is rated at 4000 watts RPM 26,100 100 amps at 45 volts. that's about 5.5 Hp.Suitably gears down could such a motor be a power unit for a light weight electric vehicle. The DC motor I used was, by comparison, huge and weighty. It seems to me that HP is HP and 5.5. Hp is plenty for what I have in mind.My concerns as always is I see no other commercial manufacture doing this - or anyone else for that matter, only electric bikes use small motors. There has to be a reason I am not catching.Experts out there you opinion please.

DIYers converting gas powered cars to electric

Yes, you read that right-people at home are converting their regular gas powered cars to electric. They have an average range of 40 miles, which could be doable if you have a short commute or live in town.Of course, since they are charging them by plugging them into a regular outlet, they aren't really being all that green. You'd have to charge it off solar or wind power to do that. But it's still saving all those nasty car emissions-and it's very cool.So when do we see an instructable?http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/ptech/08/14/electric.cars/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

Overpriced Stuff: Electric Motor Speed Controllers

Commercially, speed controllers for electric motors (electric car size) are very expensive, like on here. That page has a controller capable of 144v at 550a peak (about 90 horsepower peak) for $1250. I just designed a speed controller with parts off of digikey.com for about $200 that could handle 144v at 690a continuous so it could probably get over 180 horsepower peak. All things considered, their's costs over 10 times as much per amount of power. This seems like a BIG markup. I can understand shipping costs, labor costs, etcetera, but something seems a little messed up here.NOTEI am not sure that the design is quite right, and haven't done it myself, so criticism is good.
