I am going to make an electric vehicle so my question is that how to calculate cost per unit,cost per mile for an electric vehicle? and ways to overcome weight issues so that when a person sits on the vehicle, the speed does not reduce or less.  I am asking this because i want to make a vehicle that will cover many miles with less battery efficiently. The HE Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle It looks like an interesting concept car. Although, it might be hard to find somebody who wants to pedal it. I really like the solar panels on top, and how on the downhill, it charges a capacitor for energy.This HE Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle concept uses the power of your muscles as well electricity stored in the batteries. It allows smooth and constant velocity both uphill (with the help of the electric motor), as well as downhill (when the wheel acts as a generator and charges the batteries). The vehicle can turn 360 degrees maintaining stability all the time. Additional power is acquired from photovoltaic placed on top of the vehicle as well as during de-acceleration from regenerative braking. Elderly and handicapped people that are unable to provide enough kinetic energy can also charge the batteries directly from the grid.

multiple speed setting for an electric vehicle?

Suppose an Ev had to run on different speeds say 30 miles/hr and 40 miles/h and vice versa. So how will the the current and voltage changes according to this situation. Say you have a 400w motor and torque is known already and is calculated according to the required acceleration. In short if you have an Ev and u want to set the ev run on different speeds what are the quantities that have to be checked or monitored (current,voltage) and .If you move from 30 to 40 miles/h what will happen to the variables?

Electric vehicle motor selection

As any one who has looked at my instructables knows whilst a school teacher I built a full sized electric racing car.https://www.instructables.com/id/Building-an-elect...This had a 250 watt DC motor over run to 500 watts - 20 amps at 24 volts .It was capable of running the car up to 25 - 30 MPH and using 2 car batteries drive for a couple of hours on the flat.Nowadays electric vehicles are all the rage. Looking at a few motores as small as 4000 watts are in use for city use where high speed isn't necessary.Now the question:https://hobbyking.com/en_us/turnigy-c580l-580kv-br...This motor intended for model cars is rated at 4000 watts RPM 26,100 100 amps at 45 volts. that's about 5.5 Hp.Suitably gears down could such a motor be a power unit for a light weight electric vehicle.The DC motor I used was, by comparison, huge and weighty. It seems to me that HP is HP and 5.5. Hp is plenty for what I have in mind.My concerns as always is I see no other commercial manufacture doing this - or anyone else for that matter, only electric bikes use small motors.There has to be a reason I am not catching.Experts out there you opinion please.

FS: BIG electric motors

've got three 36v forklift steering motors. They're big, beefy, and used. Rated as 1 1/3 HP "special" duty. They draw 4.1A no load at 36v. With the gearbox, they draw 4.3A no load. Speed for the motor alone 3225RPM , with the gearbox is 75RPM. Torque must be something outrageous. They have an optional mating 43:1 Sumitomo-made gearbox which I reckon would make these some great drive motors for a large heavy project. Without gearbox, they would be excellent for go-karts, suicidal ebikes, etc. I even know of a e-car project that used a similar motor. (forkenswift) The motors alone weigh about 18lbs. Not sure what they weigh with the gearbox. You want one. I have three. I'm asking $100 each for the whole motor/gearbox shebang. inspection vehicle

Hi everyone! I'm new here and I come from Belgium (so my english is bad ) I'm working on a school project with 5 people. 2 of them are electrical installation technicians and 3 are Mechanical design technicians. We do all of the electronics, while the housing is made by the Mechanical design technicians. We started on the first of oktober and now we almost finished. The vehicle has a Wild Thumper arduino board, Dension WIRC with 2 camcorders and a wifi stick, 2 LED's, a servo motor and 2 DSMP420 motors with a power of 41W. Thanks to my thesis, I started to have interest for arduino. And so I bought a lot of arduino products like the arduino UNO. And thanks to the opensource of arduino I learned a lot of arduino and tryed a lot of projects. So that’s why I'm also putting my project online. It isn't finished because I still have some problems with the charging of the battery's. I use 10x1.2V battery's with 4.5 Ah in series. And the Wild Thumper stops too soon charging. But I'm working on that. :D It's controlled with the WIRC app that connects with the Dension through wifi, which sends signals to the Wild Thumper. These signals controls the motor's and the LED's. The servo motor is directly connected to the Dension. The vehicle will later be used by the Company Cofely to ride in ducts and inspect cables or even take something with the gripper in unreachable places. We are doing a competition with our project. I am busy with DIY Electric Vehicle in Cape Town South Africa, I need some input?

I am a Motor Mechanic for almost 30 years and I want to change to Electric Motor Vehicle. But I want to construct a Cheaper Method of ConversionI have already designed and configured my drive line to attain high speed using Low power input. I am using a light Motor for the Conversion AC 3.7KW Motor with 3.5 Amp Single Phase. I am also designing  the Alternative Charging Controlling mechanism to and input controller to top up the Batteries.  Using only 6 x  12v 100 am Batteries, I know its low but the Motor will be consuming such low power that it would not need extra Batteries.  Now my question What Electrical components,  Required  I am using a 12 v 1000 w Sinewave inverter, with wellsee power control  now setting up the Curtis Electronic Pedal for the variable drive, what mechanism can I use and disconnecting the power in high speed and switching to the alternative power source. Any suggestions.

Washing machine motor on an electric vehicle?

I got bad news from the answers, so I wanna use a washing machine motor.  My question is, do i need 240V to power it? Or it has like a transformator in the washing machine that makes the voltage lower? I never opened one..

3D Printed Solar Electric Vehicle

Last months, as passive and low energy construction business went down in Romania, I had time to revival an old project - Zero Emission Solar Electric Vehicle. While researching online and off-line for chassis, body and materials suppliers and manufacturers, went to the 3D Printing idea for chassis, body and parts! There are already at least 2 cars printed so, and I'd like to share what I know already and also to learn from you. The vehicles will be modular, also. Hope you will love this idea, when I will have design ready and show it here :)  We might use Open Source Vehicles chassis, but not sure about this, because 3D printing will reduce the need of many parts that are in a classical chassis and body.  Your info brought here and your decent comments will be deeply appreciated. Comparative Environmental Friendliness of Internal Combustion and Electric Vehicles

I would like to know which type of vehicle is more environmentally friendly. Electric and hybrid vehicles are gaining in popularity and they are touted as green, but they clearly require more energy and resources in their manufacture due to their battery packs, rare earth metals and electric motors. On the other hand, traditional internal combustion vehicles require fewer resources to manufacture. However, I imagine that it converts fossil fuels to energy less efficiently than electrics because the conversion process is smaller, unlike in large scale power plants (not sure if this is true). Electric === More resources to create (-) Power Plant (Generates energy efficiently?) (+) -> Power Lines (A: energy loss) (-) -> Motion +,-,- Gas === Fewer Resources to create (+) Combustion Motor (Generates energy inefficiently? B: energy loss) (-) -> Motion +,- I'm pretty terrible at explaining this, but is the energy loss at A or B worse when comparing the two systems? For electrics to be viable, it must offset the higher creation cost. Just wondering which one is actually more "green" when you factor in production (disregard cost of transporting fossil fuels to gas stations and power plants).

Hey any ideas? It's a '96 with a v8 engine. Frankly, I'll be more impressed with an electric motor. I know it's not the ideal car to do this with, but I want to give it a try anyway.

spec a dc motor for a vehicle

I am making an electric vehicle. Assume no friction on a flat surface. The vehicle will have two dc electric motors preferably 24v or 48v system as space is an issue(about 3.5 x 4 feet) one motor on each drive axle. The vehicle will weigh 2000lbs have a max speed of 10miles per hour be able to reach max speed in under 5 seconds overall wheel diameter will be 16 inches Can be geared down to attain needed torque but must go up to 10miles per hour. Please include formulas so I can at least know how to do this in the future. I need to know power, torque, rpm needed for electric motor. Thank you

Electric Air Conditioner for SUV??

I live and work in one of the southern states that moves to a position approximately 100' from the surface of the sun in summer.  I unfortunately must spend time sitting and waiting at various facilities, sometimes for a couple of hours in my vehicle.  I have 120VAC readily available at all of the facilities, but usually no air conditioning inside.  I'd like to find a way to cool the inside of the vehicle without idling the engine.  Ice would not be a preferable solution.  Ideally, I would like something that can be put into the vehicle during the summer months and then removed during the cooler month we get.  I've thought about a rooftop A/C, but don't want to cut holes in the vehicle (I also don't like the look. It's a Suburban, not a camper!).  A portable A/C with the vent hose run out of a window would be one option, but I was hoping to find a more elegant solution...and one that challenged my technical abilities. :)  It's been in the 105 degree plus range this week, with no forecast for it to go below 100.  I want/need something that travels with me, sits in the cargo area of the SUV, and can (hopefully) just be plugged in to work.  It would NOT be used while the vehicle is moving.   Oh, and of course....I want to do this as inexpensively as possible! :)

Treadmill DC Motor For Electric Vehicle Project? Answered

I am going to start a small EV project. I have seen that most treadmill motors are 3 to 4hp powerful. I wanted to know weather these motors will be suitable for my project. I am building a small kart capable of carrying maximum 2 persons. Also if they are suitable for my project please can someone suggest me 3 or 4hp treadmill motors on eBay or other sites below 150$. Also I saw a formula on a site related to power for a vehicle   HP = W(V/234)^3 where HP=horsepower, W=weight in pounds and V=required velocity in MPH. Are electric vehicles deadly dangerous to build and repair? Answered

A local high school tech class is converting a pick-up truck to electric and I got the idea that I could convert our Explorer, (the engine is shot) but an auto mechanic I met told me he can't get insurance to work on an EV due to the danger of the high voltage- this is disappointing to me because I could really get a lot of use from re-purposing this truck to a green(er) vehicle. Help me be more green!

Nissan invests in electric cars

Motor-manufacturer Nissan have announced a £200 million ($330 million) investment in a factory intended to produce lithium ion batteries for electric cars.Along with the news from Nissan, Peter Mandelson (Business Secretary) said a "low-carbon economic area" would be established in the North East.As part of the project, 750 charging points would be installed across the region and a training centre specialising in the manufacture and maintenance of low-carbon vehicles would be set up. I'm up to something dastardly...

Does anyone here have experience with: -electric vehicles in general, -Prius-style hybrids -deep-cycle batteries -independent rear suspensions -repurposing "free" lithium-ion batteries -The heat output of half a ton of such batteries, and a cooling system that might be up to the job -electric dragsters -building a car from scratch (and I do mean scratch... starting with building the frame) -Using a large gasoline engine to power a generator, the output of which directly powers an electric motor, and any power left over going to the above-mentioned batteries -high performance electric motors -low-performance electric motors -Breaking, destroying, or otherwise rending any of the above components? On a budget?

Electric bike motor help!

Helli guys.. after a long time racing motocross, I would like to experiment into doing an electric dirt bike for myself.. My plan is to find an 85 or 125cc frame with no engine, and build from that.. the biggest question is, what motor could I use that is no less than 15kw, and on the affordable side? I was looking at the Turnigy Rotomax 150cc eqiv. And it has a max power output at 9000 something watts, would that be any good for a motocross bike? Would it burn out quickly since its pretty small? Notes: i am strictly looking for powerful bikes, a 2kw bike is not for me since I am used to overpowered 250cc two stroke hell-born suicide machines, thanks..

DIYers converting gas powered cars to electric

Yes, you read that right-people at home are converting their regular gas powered cars to electric. They have an average range of 40 miles, which could be doable if you have a short commute or live in town.Of course, since they are charging them by plugging them into a regular outlet, they aren't really being all that green. You'd have to charge it off solar or wind power to do that. Electricity Recycler? Stupid Question?

I was laying in bed a few minutes ago thinking about my idea to change the world, as i do every night before bed. I thought why can't or hasn't anyone made a electricity recycling generator? like why can't you take say..... a car alternator and make it produce enough electricity to run a small motor to spin the alternator as well as have enough energy left over to power devices? and then why couldn't this theory be applied to large scale generators? or why couldn't you electricly power a vehicle and somehow turn the wheels into basically 4 big alternators that generate power for the vehicle? going back to the alternator idea, is there no way to make an alternator type generator to use say 25 - 50% of its generated power to power itself and the other 50% to power devices? please point out the flaws its hurting my brain

How does one warm the passenger compartment of an all-electric vehicle in winter?

An all-electric car does not have a heat source as combustion engine-powered vehicles do. Without the engine, there is no heat source to keep the passengers warm in winter. Powering electric heating systems would deplete the batteries, stranding the eco-friendly driver in unfriendly conditions.

Circuit for electric vehicle? Regenerative braking / free-wheeling?

I'm working on a circuit for an electric trike I plan to build for the local EV challenge competition. I plan to incorporate regenerative "free-wheeling" to recharge the batteries on the down hill sections. S1 closed and S2 open to accelerate the vehicle. S1 open and S2 closed to recharge the batteries while freewheeling down hill. Batteries: sealed lead acid batteries 12V or 24V (depending on motor) Motor: brushed DC motor Would this kind of circuit work? Is it possible to recharge SLA batteries in such a way? Any help and/or suggestions is appreciated. PS. I know it would also be possible to implement regen braking using a full H-bridge, but i think we would be doing more freewheeling than braking on the race track.

Electric Handicap Scooter parts, any ideas???

Heya guys I just aquired and parted out a electric handicap scooter from a rummage sale for 20 bucks. It is a three wheeler. Batteries are dead (read, toast). Im tring to figure out what to so with the gearbox/motor assembly. It is all one unit. Im trying to think of some kind EV project. I thought perhaps putting some larger 26in wheels on the axle ends to gear it up, and make some sort of cargo trike. Any other ideas would be appreciated

Why aren't Ni-mh batteries used for electric vehicles? Answered

It seems to me that Lead-acid and Lithium batteries are the only type of batteries used for electric vehicles. Also every one complains that Lead-acid is too heavy and Lithium is too expensive. So why not split the difference and use Ni-mh batteries? They aren't really heavy or expensive. Why aren't they used?

HOW do you select a pmdc MOTOR for an electric vehicle?

Suppose we are up to making an electric vehicle and needs to set up the parts correctly.HOW  do you then select the dc motors of appropriate ratings.Like for a 48 v  PM DC what amount of load can it pull and stuff like that?

As the motors are rotating at the maximum speed, how to increase the speed of the outer wheel in order to maintain the speed of the vehicle ?

[HELP ME] Attaching a gear to a skateboard wheel

Hello!  I have a project in mind about making an electric skateboard. I will use skate's wheels to make less resistance, and i plan to attach a gear i upcycled from an old drill(the tube geared on the inside, not the outside) to a skate wheel. THe problem is: HOW?? If you don't know what im talking about its the tube that makes the planetary gears in a drill spin(http://www.m3design.com/media/2008/11/drill_25.jpg  ) on the photos i attached its just super glued to the wheel, so i can figure out a way to attach them.. HELP ME PLEASE!

Would a 700 watt electric motor be sufficient for my needs?

I'm have started building a small electric cart, I plan on using 2 350watt motors to power it. I estimate the final weight of the cart (with me on it) to be around 250 pounds, would these motors be able to effectively propel the cart?

Electric Vehicle (electronics/components) question. What would be the best tool for the job? Answered

I am starting an electric vehicle project. For this project I have two motors, each powering to 2 fixed wheels. I will have a computer (Arduino-ish) supply power to these motors based on the graph of cos 2x (1 being 100% power ratio). The the steering wheel is the input of the degrees/radians. (Now comes my question) I will need some way for the computer to know what degree the steering wheel is currently at, (0 degrees= strait,  -90 degrees=90 degrees left, 90 degrees of course being 90 degrees right.) what would be the most efficient way of doing this?

Is there government money available for electric/alternative fuel vehicle conversions?

I plan on doing an alternative fuel (ethanol) or electric motorcycle project and need money for it. Are there special-purpose government grants that I can tap into to help pay for this? I'm in the United States, in the state of Georgia... if that helps.

Heat storage device for car cabin heater

I want to increase the heat storage capacity of the existing car heater so that I can run the heater (just the fan and a liquid pump) while the engine is off and so I can have a warm car as soon as I start on a cold day. The current heat storage is the coolant circulating in the engine. I want to increase the capacity of that. Instead of simply attaching a liquid reservoir to the heater circuit (to increase the coolant volume), I was considering using a picnic cooler (insulated) box with a coper tube coiled in it. The box would be filled with oil and paraffin. Paraffin melts ≈ 40° C  and I can take advantage of the latent heat of fusion when the paraffin changes phase. The oil is a medium to suspend the paraffin. I need a recommendation of an electric 12 volt pump to circulate the fluid. I request any other thoughts or criticisms.
