Stirling Engine

I have a 4.3l v6 that came out of a s-10 pickup.  I was wondering if i could make it run on the stirling cycle? It is a 90 degree v6 so it should work, This is the only site i could think of to post this question on. I was thinking i would isolate the waterjackets to the right and left bank of cylinders then heat one side and cool the other. I am good with engines and am skilled in the garage. I'm just tinkering. Maybe run a generator with it if it runs. I have a welder, plasma cutter, ect and can use them. Just kinda throwin it out there...

Search Engine

The web guys should write a search feature that counts the number of times a word or phrase is searched and then displays that value whenever that same word or phrase is searched. A separate page containing the top searched words or phrases could be added. A feature such as this would allow members to create instructables about topics in demand.

Engine to Compressor? Answered

I am planning on making a very high volume compressor from a small engine.  I plan to adjust timing and stuff accordingly.  I just wan't to make sure an engine can handle the pressure.  I assume it can because of the explosions it can contain but I just want to be sure it can handle 125-200psi.  And also, is 2 stage really necessary or can I just push all the air in in one stage with a couple pistons.

IC ENGINES?

I was thinking that what will happen if we arrange inlet & exhaust valves on the piston (spark plug remaining on cylinder head)? i think that may be by using metal foam on the cylinder head the knocking of the engine might decrease. please assume that somehow i use proper mechanisms for valve timing & they dont have any appreciable effect on the piston. just consider that the weight of the valves is added to the piston. i was wondering that this might increase the efficiency of the engine because suction will take place more slowly (so it will near a reversible process, so efficiency will increase) & force of the explosion will be better. please you ppl; if anybody can give me satisfactorily explanatory answers, do reply! :)

How do people make small boilers to power the steam engines? I was thinking a peice of copper, iron, or galvanized pipe. I would heat it with a fresnel lens from a rear projection tv. Can the spot from a fresnel lens me further focused with a normal glass magnification glass?

Search Engine

I don't know if anyone else has had this "problem," but the site search doesn't exactly provide the best of help.  When I search the site for something, It'll often return 'ibles, forum discussions and other things as unrelated to my search as possible.  After browsing or going down the search results a way, sometimes I'll find an 'ible with almost my exact search term in the title.  IMO, something that should be at the top of the search results.

Engineer's Duel

Hi everyone, I'm new here to this forum site but I wanted to share an idea I've been kicking around for a while now.  I'm a huge fan of the Fantasy vs Science Fiction debate and often like to combine certain elements from each into one another (ie Spell Casting Robots, Steampunk Wizards, etc). One of the staple elements of any Fantasy work is the iconic Wizard's Duel, when two magical wielders face off against one another using a combination or various spells, attacks and magic.   Now, I've always been interested in the kinds of sports/ competitions that focus scientific and engineering minds (robot battles). So I devised one of my own today, just something I think would be really interesting to watch. It's sort of like a modern day resurrection of medieval duels, but instead of weapons the duelers use inventions. Engineer's Duel Overview: Two inventors face off, each utilizing different inventions they've built to best their opponent, and eventually destroy them (or at least incapacitate). The purpose of the battle is to test the wits, intelligence, strategy and inventing skills of each of the duelers.   The goal is not to destroy the opponent, but instead their chosen gadgets until yours is the last one surviving. Rules: 1) No Robots. This fight should be between the duelers themselves, not their robotic minions. 2) No Direct Weapons Allowed (devices that serve no other purpose except as a weapon). Eg no guns, swords, canons, etc. The purpose of the duel is not about how powerful an invention one can build, but how inventive it is and how well the dueler uses it. 3) Each invention chosen by the duelers must be used at least once in the fight. 4) No EMPs, for obvious reasons 5) Vehicular machines such as Tumblers, Mech Warriors, and Giant Hovercrafts are allowed but only in the National Primaries. Other than this, if you can build it, you can use it. So yeah tell me what you think!

Jet Engine Problems? Answered

I have been building a mini Jet Engine.  I have a VERY STRONG electric fan for the compressor.  Outer shell is made of sheet metal.  The fuel I have been trying to use is gasoline.  The intake is about 2.5 inches across and about 3 inches in it begins to close up to about 0.6 inch diameter where the air is compressed and mixed with fuel before being burnt.  The problem is that its starts but it explodes.  Is it too much fuel, to much compression from the compressor, to small of a diameter for the combustion chamber and exhaust or something else completely?  Haven't done much with jet before so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

alcohol expansion engine?

While expirimenting in my back yard i came across somthing. I was working on my steam engine and was testing the boiler with methyl alcohol as the heat source( i used nitro car fuel 20%) and i wondered what would happen if i put the alcohol in the boiler. I heated the boiler at the same temperature as i normaly heat water and the alcohol seemed to produce alot more vapors at a faster rate and volume than just steam. So... I was wondering if it was possible to create an engine on the same basic design as a steam engine that ran on alcohol expansion. I do not realy plan on creating this i was just wondering if it would work as good or better than steam. If someone has already made this please tell me. Thanks

Engine Cumbustion & Etc.

I've been knocking around an idea in my head and I was wondering if anyone had an answer to a few problems associated with said idea. One of the problems/road-blocks is how do modern cars run? More specifically, is the gasoline that goes into the pistons for combustion an actual air/gas mixture, or is it air/liquid-gasoline? And is there a way to manually adjust the ratio of air-to-combustible? The reason I ask is because I was hypothesizing whether or not it would be feasible to replace gasoline with a more efficient combustible, and this combustible would greatly depend on what is actually put into a modern petroleum-based car engine's pistons. Thanks for any info!

Search engine virus?

Occasionally, when I try to click a link to a web page (especially links that have already been clicked on and are purple,) I will be redirected to a different (and often generic/unrecognized,) website. I have had issues with this virus on a different computer and want to know if anybody knows anything about it. As in the other computer, when I am redirected, the small website identifier image (to the left of the URL,) changed to a sort of bluish 2 with kind of a flourish to it. A name to the virus would be helpful and a way to destroy it would be even more so.

Replacement minibike engine? Answered

I have a 2006 Mini Baja Minibike(http://www.bajamotorsports.com/categories/minibikes/products/WR65_baja-warrior-mini-bike) with more than a few problems. As of now, it won't even start, and I can't find the problem. I've cleaned anywhere that fuel goes, air filter, exhaust, and adjusted the carb,  it still doesn't start. When it was running, it didn't even idle. So I'm wondering, would an engine swap with this: http://www.harborfreight.com/engines-generators/gas-engines/212-cc-ohv-horizontal-shaft-gas-engine-epa-69730.html engine work? It seems almost identical; but I"m not sure.

Trimmer Engine Generator

Hello Instructables community.    I was thinking of making a 12 volt battery charger with a trimmer engine (pictured) connected to a scraped car alternator (I found several on eBay). But I have a few questions: 1. Would such a combination work as shown in the illustration?  2. Would it be best if I directly connected the engine to the alternator with no drive belts or chains, or would the high gear of the large engine gear and small generator gear be worth the extra trouble.  3. What is the best way to connect the two? And 4. Where should I remove the engine from the "trimming part". Any answers will be appreciated.                                                                                                                       Sincerely                                                                                                                  Confused DIYer

Jet engine parts

Hi Guys Can anyone please help me. I have recently purchased a few parts for a jet engine off ebay as a possible project but can't find what engine they may have came off.  The combustion chamber is different to what you see in smaller rc jet engine. The turbine wheel blades are dove tailed like on bigger jets and the compressor wheel has an inducer of around 95mm. I would imagine if this could ever run again it would produce a serious amount of thrust. I have uploaded some photos and would be grateful of any help.

Engineering Class Suggestions

I'm part of an Engineering Club at my school and we're looking for future projects that just explore some ideas of Engineering in general. We would like to come up with our own ideas at some point, but for now, a lot of us are inexperienced, so I thought I could come here and find some stuff. So far, we have decided to build a bunch of Stirling Engines and use them for miscellaneous things, but after that, we have no other ideas. Could you guys come up with some ideas (possibly your own or ones that you have done), that are similar to this idea of teaching the basics of making things and stuff like that? Links would be helpful. Guidelines: Because we do this at school, there are certain rules that prevent us from bringing large knives and laser pointers on campus. Power tools and exacto knives are OK, though (IKR?). Also, because we are students, we have to scavenge around for materials, so unless it's less than ~30$, we might not be able to do that either.

Old Engineering Exercise

Hello all! I was just looking through various Maker projects, here and elsewhere, and was reminded of a collage engineering exercise I was told about growing up.  Apparently, they don't do it any more.  My education is only up to an Associates Degree in Drafting and Design, and I never got this at that level. This exercise (near as I can remember) consisted of a student being given a piece of aluminum (I think) and a set of files, a caliper, and a few other small tools.  The student then had to turn the piece of aluminum into as near a perfect cube as they could, using only those tools. Has anyone out there heard of this exercise before?  Maybe done it themselfs? Namely wanted to through this out there, see what people thought.
