Escape from Berkeley

DARPA had a Grand Challenge. . . the rednecks a Cannonball Run. . . and the hippies a bunch of WVO buses broken down on the side of the road. Now, NASA scientists and junkyard fabricators go head-to-head in a no holds barred battle of engineering prowess and creative excess. Hanging somewhat in the balance, are bragging rights for saving the world. That, and a grand prize of $5,000.Escape From Berkeley is a road rally taking place this October, from Berkeley CA to Las Vegas NV, which is open only to alternatively fueled vehicles. It's being put on by The Shipyard, "A collaborative build space for Art and Energy". There are eight vehicles already registered, most of which are using some variation of gasification of scrap biomass as their fuel. It is open to any vehicle meeting the alt fuel requirement that can get to Berkeley by October. This weekend they are having an Open Shop Weekend wherein registrants can work on their vehicles, also potential registrants with potential vehicles, also various interested parties and hangers-on. If the idea of getting a car to go from Berkeley to Vegas using nothing but coffee grounds appeals to you, this is your kind of road rally!Images are of "Kristie's Flyer", a steam-powered runabout associated with the Neverwas Haul, and "Hooker Cooker" which I know nothing about but had an interesting picture. More info is available at the Escape From Berkeley site on the Vehicles page.

The Name Escapes Me

I was digging through a pile of old stuff the other day, when I found an old toy I built. It is made from a wooden dowel with notches in it and a propeller at one end. When you rub the notches with a stick (a secret way), the propeller spins, and can change directions allmost at one (with the secret). I think it's called a Huwie stick? I'd hate to make on iBle on this without knowing the name! Also, I need to know if these are spelled spelt** right:Roy Rogers and Shirley TempleThey are also my next iBle.**Ha! DEPLOYABLE FIRE ESCAPES for TOWERING BUILDINGS

The “9/11” World Trade Center disaster horrified Americans as they witnessed people leaping out of 100 story windows to their death. There was simply no available escape system to facilitate a safe yet quick evacuation to the ground floor. Elevators weren’t working and internal staircases were blocked by sporadic debris, black smoke and fires. The situation was virtually hopeless to the point where many chose to jump rather than be burned alive. So here we are, with technology capable of constructing 100+ story buildings but without the means for external fire-escapes. Unfortunately, the public isn’t aware that at our current level of technology we can finally address this problem with our architects. We are talking about a means to rapidly deploy a flexible escape tube-chute from 100+ stories that hangs along a guy-wire which is pre-attached to our escape floor and anchored to the ground (Fig-1). This tube-chute escape system will deliver a person from 100-stories down to ground level and safely outside the building in under 10-minutes. Prior to deployment, the entire system is housed inside a container that is either attached to the outside of the building or built into a structured wall, opening to the outside at various floor levels. When in deployment, the inlet of the flexible escape tube will be anchored to the outside wall of a designated escape window and contain an inner diameter sufficiently sized to accommodate an individual. The tube’s exit end is tethered to a rope-wire that runs down our permanently located guy-wire, through a series of guy-wire slip-rings, and quickly pulls the tube's exit end to ground. The rope-wire is permanently attached to a winch-motor located on the ground. During deployment, the winch pulls the tube’s rope-wire down to ground level by slipping along the guy-wire rings. As the tube-chute deploys downward, it automatically forms a spiral about the guy-wire, creating a very long escape slide that gets anchored to the ground. A fully deployed tube-chute exhibits three basic attachments for stability: 1) a set of flexible slip-rings and tethers attached between the permanent guy-wire and tube to form its downward spiral, 2) a tube-chute inlet anchored to the outside of the building at various floor levels, and 3) a tube-chute exit anchored to the ground and providing a fully deployed and reliable escape system ready for use. As each person enters the tube-chute, they are only aware of the outside winds which buffet the tube plus the internally hanging cloth fingers used to slow their descent as they slide down to safety. They are not aware of any height and feel relatively secure due to their complete envelopment by both the tube and its touching fingers.  A 100-story descent would take about 6-to-10-minutes to reach the outside safety of ground while travelling at a speed of roughly 5-fps (3.5 MPH) as regulated by the spiral-ramp and internal cloth-fingers retarding gravity.   Technical  Details: The tube-chute is reinforced by a sewn-in spiral wire that gives it strength and flexibility. Its tube is made of heavy duty nylon, much like the large yet light air-hoses used on many high stress applications today. The tube cork-screws its way down and around a permanently deployed guy-wire that stretches from the designated floor of the building to the ground. The tube is sized for a person to enter and slide down the spiraling pathway until he reaches ground level. Gravity will act to propel the sliding individual down the tube. To counter gravity, we rely on the tube’s spiraling design to produce a gradually declining ramp that slows and checks an individual’s descent speed. The number of spirals and ramp-angle necessary to reach the ground will be sized to limit the gravity-induced speed so as not to endanger an individual’s sliding descent. That and the internally hanging cloth fingers guard against excessive speeds and will prevent skin-burns from the sliding friction. The tube’s nylon material is impregnated with anti-flammable chemistry and its exterior is aluminized to prevent radiative heatloads from causing a fire due to either direct flames or the radiant heat from indirect flames. A final note on the overall weight for this flexible tube-chute structure. Clearly, since we are designing a deployable fire-escape system, its weight must be kept to a minimum for deployment safety and reliability. Items such as the cloth materials, tube-wire reinforcements, and spiraling tube tether attachments must be carefully chosen for weight, strength and durability. While issues of weathering may not be that important, as it will be housed and protected from the elements, the shelf life of the various materials chosen is of paramount importance.

How do you make an escapement with a balance spring?

I have a problem My cat has a weak stomache so he needs to have a lot of small meals during the day, but there's not always somebody at home, so I wanted to make a cat feeder device for this. I want to make a disc that rotates slowly, during the day, leaving open another segment of a cilinder after every period of time. In every segment of the cilinder is cat food(which is poured into it that morning) Under the cilinder I want a clock mechanism, with a balance spring. I want to make it with a balance spring because it shouldn't be too high, my cat needs to be able to reach it's food normally. I've made a mechanism with a pendulum before, but it was one meter in height, while now i want the mechanism about one inch in height. I thought only a balance spring would fit right in the cilinder under the feeder, but I never worked with one, I don't have one either. How does a clock escapement with a balance spring work? And how can I get a balance spring? Can I just roll a long metal strip intro a spring? My cat feeder doesn't need a complicated gear train, because whether it makes one revolution in 10 hours, or in 14 hours, that doesn't matter. thanks

Escape from Berkeley (by any non-petroleum means necessary)

Now that Convert your Honda Accord to run on trash has won the Craftsman Workshop of the Future Contest, it's prepped to race to Mexico for a chance of winning $10,000.00!Our friends at The Shipyard and ALL Power Labs are running Escape from Berkeley (by any non-petroleum means necessary), the premier alternative-fuels road rally, for the second year in a row. Last year they escaped from Berkeley and fled to Vegas; this year they're running for the boarder. The directions are laid out for you, all you need to do is get to work. Will you be there? If so, be sure to document your alternative fuel project on Instructables!A road race to Mexico, no fuel allowed.June 12-16, 2009Berkeley, CA - "Escape from Berkeley (by any non petroleum means necessary)" is a road rally of alternatively powered vehicles from Berkeley, California to the US-Mexican Border. Part engineering problem, part artistic opportunity, the rally challenges contestants to start their "engines" on something other than petroleum based fuel, and by any means necessary, cause their "vehicles" show up at the border five days later - using only fuels/power/motive force scavenged for free along the route.Last years inaugural race took us from the DIY oasis of ALL Power Labs in Berkeley, CA, to the consumptive excess of Las Vegas, Nevada. Returning to compete for the second running of the race will be 1st Place Rally Winner Jack McCornack from Cave Junction, OR and Runner Up Wayne Keith from Springfield, AL. Registration for new racers is now open. Interested racers should write jim@allpowerlabs.org.All types of vehicles are welcome. All schemes for non-petroleum based transport are encouraged. In short, everything is permitted - just as long as your "fuel" is from a non-petroleum based source, your acquisition of it does not require money, and you start the race with no more than 10kwh of it on board. The full field of power generation and conversion is open for scavenging and creative power hacking.DARPA had a Grand Challenge. . . the rednecks a Cannonball Run. . . and the Auto X prize is still a year away. So in the meatime, NASA scientists and junkyard fabricators will go head-to-head in a no holds barred battle of engineering prowess and creative excess. Hanging somewhat in the balance are bragging rights for saving the world. That, and a grand prize of $10,000.Schedule:June 12th - Race begins at ALL Power Labs in Berkeley, CA. End and overnight in Parkfield, California, the Earthquake capital of the world.June 13th - 2nd leg start at Parkfield. End and overnight at El Mirage dry lake.June 14th - Day off at El Mirage dry lake for landspeed trials. Some EFB racers to run speed trials.June 15th - 3rd leg start at El Mirage. End at Salton Sea, California State Recreation Area.June 16th - 4th leg start at Salton Sea. End at the beach where the fence goes into the ocean at the Border Fields State Park, US Mexico Border."Some entries will arrive at the start line with extreme technical innovation. Others will arrive with only creative excess. The best entries, as well as the likely winners, will need to arrive with both." - Jim MasonNew York Times article on last year's race.

DIY: in Prison

Limited resources? Hiding from authority? No, not a young DIY-er with a low budget and strict parents, but prison inmates trying to get out. Take a look at this collection of photographs by Marc Steinmetz showcasing creative escape tools crafted by German prisoners while in jail. While many of them were confiscated before completion or implementation, a handful of them were used successfully to break out of jail. While I in no way condone these actions, you've got to admit some of these are creative use of available resources. Plus, if Instructables ever ran an Escaping from Prison contest (sponsored by Alcatraz tourism, anyone?), we'd all be up against some pretty stiff competition.Escape Tools

Deep into my mind...

Hey guys! I last logged in...10 months ago. But I wanna stay instructably active, i just...can't for some reason. Anyway, I made this forum topic to tell you about a topic that goes so deep into my mind, you might just not make it back out.    You see, there's this concept called 'escapism'. Copied from Wikipedia; "Escapism is mental diversion by means of entertainment or recreation, as an "escape" from the perceived unpleasant or banal aspects of daily life". So basically, it is the concept of daydreaming at such an intense state that everything seems real, and you 'escape' life's stressing aspects. It is something I do very often to the point of living an entire lifetime in an escape. Every sense is so real. Feel, hear smell, taste, sight, it's just unbelievable. Despite living a whole 80 or so years in an escape, it only lasted about 10 minutes. After coming out of such escapes, I feel depressed over missing something or someone in that escape. Some escapes will take place over an entire lifetime, some will be over a few years, a week, or maybe only a few minutes. I have been in extraterrestrial planets, barren deserts, vast fields, cosmic space, and many other moments. Some might even be of just another person. Same day, same age and generation, just a different person with a different family with a just different lifestyle. They are just these amazingly twisted trances that effect my life. They pull me into depressions for no reason.      Now you may be thinking "That's so stupid.". But it's not just a concept anymore. It's almost become a lifestyle. I might hear a song or a part of a melody, and I'll have this amazing nostalgia...bringing me back to an escape. Sometimes I'll just miss my surroundings. I might miss mountains, or a clear view of the milky way in the night sky, or I might even miss the view of multiple planets in an extraterrestrial sky. Sometimes I miss it so much I cry. Some escapes I remember, most I have forgotten. My escapes are almost like dreams. They are long and can sometimes feel real, but I forget 90% of it within 10 minutes of snapping out of it.      Please, don't be like "YOU'RE SEVERELY DEPRESSED AND YOU SHOULD SEE A DOCTOR", because I already have a therapist. To be honest, with the minor depression I have, he isn't helping at all. I'm not completely depressed, I mean I have my moments (everyone knows that awkward stage of adolescence xP), I'm rather happy of my life. So. What do you all think?

Why do oxygen escape quicker in freshwater that has salt added than in freshwater?

I where told to give my fish a saltbath (half a teespoon salt added to a cup-250ml freshwater and stirred till it desolves and then added your fish to the cup) as I noticed he has finrot. But my question to the petshop guy was when do I know to take the fish out of the saltwater again as it is a freshwater fish. His answer to me was, as soon as he comes to the surface gasping for air... He said as salt in freshwater lets oxygen escape quicker out of freshwater... But my question now is, but why?? Please help me to solve this....

So I will give a specific example: if I build this https://www.instructables.com/id/Electrolytic-Etcher/. Can I build also a tank using say, these acid-gas cartridges http://www.mcmaster.com/#5834t66/=walor0 in-line with the exhaust of a vent system to clean out the chlorine? Would this work? Would it be safe? Would it allow the relatively slow out-gas of hydrogen to disperse, or would it concentrate it? Any thoughts at all? Thanks! Ernest.

I need help explaining the shape of this nebula Answered

Http://www.esa.int/spaceinimages/Images/2014/10/Butterfly_death_throes This image is the "Butterfly Nebula". I'm having trouble understanding it's shape. According to the accompanying blurb, the shape indicates a "bipolar nebular, where fast-moving gas can escape more easily from the poles of the dying star than around its equator. This creates a lobed structure reminiscent of an hourglass, or, as in this case, a giant butterfly." But... why? Why can the gases escape more easily from the poles?  Why is it harder to escape at the equator? Surely, if it was blasting from the poles, we would see a more linear shape, long "beams" of material shooting out of each end?  This image looks to me as if material blasted away from the equator, but parallel to the poles, almost as if the two halves of the star's surface were peeled apart, like turning half an orange skin inside out. Anybody got a borderline high-school/university level explanation for the shape?

Using a laser pointer to display secret shapes?

Hey, all, I'm working on a puzzle for an escape room right now and am wondering if there's any way that I can use a laser pointer to display a number. My hope is that the number is not on the lens of the pointer, but rather is discovered after the laser pointer is shined through a specific spot on a piece of plexiglass. The players are asked to set up a tripod in a specific spot with a specific angle, mount the laser point to the top of it and then move the point around the room. Ideally, as the point is traveling around the room, it will shine directly on a small part of a plexiglass display and then refract a number on the wall behind it. Any ideas on how or if this is possible? Any and all thoughts are welcome. Thanks!

Inside PvC pipe, doesn't it have to have holes in it? To allow the escaping gas too expand into the second chamber.

Regular firearms work on a simular principle and size matters. 9 holes 1 inch apart, 4 lines of them. or make the inner tube out of screen. Mom & dad will love that one.

How does a bullet on a revolver get accelerated? Answered

How does the explosive in the round move the bullet? Is it just a quick bang and the shockwave gives the bullet a quick "kick", letting its momentum carry it down the barrel? or do the expanding gases continue to push it down the barrel? If it is the latter, doesn't there need to be a (reasonably) airtight seal between the chamber and barrel to stop the gases just escaping out the sides?

I have a 3Litre cylinder of normal air, at 300psi, and I want to release the air at between 0.5CFM and 1CFM (at around 15-30psi, through an airbrush, the internal diameter of the escape wold be no more than a millimeter. how can I figure out how long it will take to reach equilibrium with the outside air? cheers naught

Methane Oxidation Catalysts? Answered

I've been helping to come up with a small engine that runs on methane extracted from compost. One issue that I've run into is the fact that completely utilizing the gas isn't very easy, and some can escape the exhaust. I've heard of catalysts that help to completely burn the stuff, but I'm completely unsure of how to get them for such a small project, what price they'd be, or how to make them. Does anybody have any tips?

Make two part molds with silicone mold putty

Make a small batch of silicone putty. push original into the putty, up to the mold line. let cure. put in vents for air to escape and a pour hole cover with more putty, but will the new putty adhere to the old? How do I keep the mold pieces seperate? also If I want to use pewter originals, how do I prevent tin contamination of the mold?
