Engine Cumbustion & Etc.

I've been knocking around an idea in my head and I was wondering if anyone had an answer to a few problems associated with said idea. One of the problems/road-blocks is how do modern cars run? More specifically, is the gasoline that goes into the pistons for combustion an actual air/gas mixture, or is it air/liquid-gasoline? And is there a way to manually adjust the ratio of air-to-combustible? The reason I ask is because I was hypothesizing whether or not it would be feasible to replace gasoline with a more efficient combustible, and this combustible would greatly depend on what is actually put into a modern petroleum-based car engine's pistons. Thanks for any info!

New Category Suggestion

Hi;   I'd like to see a category for National Forests, Parks, etc.  Special features, great campsites, super swimmin' holes, beautiful but little known sights, etc.  I just thought of another one I'd like info from/on:   Unique, Out of the Ordinary Events, & Festivals      For example:  Following the Sheep Festival held yearly in Idaho. Other not-well-known festivals of interest. . . .     I drove 2-1/2 hrs. one time to go see the Outhouse Festival in Kansas. Include things like dog agility competetions, cat shows, horse events, food events, etc etc. Looking for something interesting to do. . . Thanks for your consideration! Gale Green.

Help making an LED lamp

Alright, I want to make an LED grow light for my plants because the window I want to put them in doesn't get enough sun. I need quite a bit of light for this application and it will have to be on for a significant part of every day so LED is a must. I've been looking at the prices and it seems like the most economical option is to buy some LEDs off ebay, buy a driver... maybe some resistors... then mock up some kind of heat sink to connect them to. I was considering about 10-20 ten watt on chip LEDs. This light is going to be in a room I'm in a lot so I don't want to go with any funky colors. I'd like to just use daylight spectrum LEDs. Something around 6500k. Anyway, I'm thinking it makes the most sense to get one big driver to run all the LEDs rather than one driver for each. That just seems cheaper and frankly more interesting. But I need help understanding how to wire the whole thing together and understanding whether I need resistors etc. So I'm looking for some general help figuring out what to buy and then how to wire it all together. Thanks :)

Things we carry on us.

After reading an article in regards to what we carry in our pockets I was thinking if people wanted to post what they carry on their person it may be interesting. Responses can be things you carry on your person or things you carry in your pockets, in your packs/ purses, or even whats on your keychain (in the event you are a minimalist) whichever is your preference. They say you can tell alot by a person by going through there pockets so lets here it, whats in your pockets??? Unfortunatly its late here so my post will have to wait until the morning as it will be rather lengthy.

Comment HTML formatting, etc.

Re: this thread , I hate to have to say this but I don't think it's the best idea to make a big thing ofd the ability to use arbitrary HTML in comments.  Yes, it's great to be able to go  G o o g l e all over the place, but the lack of source editor for non-pro members actually cripples the editor, including the ability to save the text of a comment with formatting/links etc. and post it later (or just keep it in case the editor screws up and deletes your comment, like it just did to me).  While the point of the pro value-added features is to make people want to go pro and "non-essential but cool" features are probably the best way of doing that without creating resentment, I still suspect the anti-pro regiment like ReCreate etc. don't need another reason to accuse pro members of lording it over the great unwashed.

Hacking (etc) car fobs

Those fobs you get with new cars are hideously expensive, and I'm sure it's 100% profit for those selling them. Can anyone here direct me to a site that sells them at reasonable prices, and some info on programming them for my car? Also, one thing that's astonished me for years is that no one has built a kind of "run-all-frequencies" transmitter, such that some evil person could walk around in a neighborhood or mall parking lot and set them all off! The circuits and info must be available somewhere! (I"m not about to do this myself--too many other fun things on my plate.)

RF remote Microcontroller etc?

So I found this remote control deal http://www.lightobject.com/1Ch-Remote-TX-Unit-IC-1527-C1-case-P385.aspx For the past few months I've bounced around the idea of using a hacked remote to turn the lights in my room on and off. This, however, makes hacking stuff a non issue. However, I still don't know how to make the remote communicate with a microcontroller. The one I linked appears to have an antenna, which is undesirable, but could become an option if nothing else. I also would like to see if I can find a similar control that uses infrared. Right, so, Basically I want a remote that sends a single signal to some kind of Microcontroller. When this signal is received, I want the microcontroller to emit a single pulse to toggle a latching relay to turn my lights on and off. Where should I look to find ideas or buy parts? I already have an Arduino, but I think I'd rather build a knockoff for a permanent circuit. So thanks in advance.

Help wiring an LED array

I'd like to buy some LEDs off ebay and build some LED arrays but I'm confused as to how to wire it. For example, lets say I have 100 watts of LEDs (aka 1 watt x 100 LEDs or 10 watts x 10 LEDs) as an extreme example and each LED has a max voltage of 12 volts. Then lets say I have a power supply that provides 100 watts at 12 volts. How would I wire it? I'm worried that if I hook it up, lots of LEDs will just burn out. Just help me understand what I need to watch out for here. I'm obviously a super novice. Have pity.

I am trying to figure out how to control a device that will be "off" while in the range of a transmitter (short range...under 10ft) and then turn on when it goes beyond the range of the signal. I would also like it to be an adjustable range. I was thinking the device would be "on" constantly as the transmitter tells it not to activate, but once it leaves the signal range it would activate.  Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

Light balls: juggling, toys, etc.

This idea just popped into my mind and I thought it wouldn't be that complicated to make, maybe even in time for christmas! I was thinking about juggling balls that would light up upon movement, except I don't know how to make them. I don't know how big/heavy motion sensors are, but couple them with leds and a battery, stick everything inside a plastic ball and presto.. or am I simplifying too much?.. Better than that would be to use the power generated by the movement to light up the leds, somewhat similar to Powerballs, but that I have no clue as how to do.. So, any ideas on how to make them?

LEGO (or KNEX, etc) diorama desk

So, I had a cool idea for a desk. I would take the desktop off and cut out the majority of the center of it so it sort of looked like a picture frame. Then I would turn it into a rectangular box on the edges about 6" deep, and then box in the cut out portion. Then I would fill in the center box with some sort of cool LEGO diorama (or anything you want). Add in some cool lighting and slap a piece of glass on the top and it could be pretty sweet. Comments/suggestions? I also need to figure out if I should buy a desk and modify it or just build my own.

Detroit-area resources, stores, etc

Hello, fellow Michiganders! *points to palm*I recently learned about Silicon Alley Recyclers, a Warren (10 and Ryan) outfit that takes cast-off computers and stuff (mostly from corporate environments), refurbs the machines, and sells them (cheap). I've taken the opportunity to unload some of my old boat-anchors, and I've picked up some neat hardware too. Are there other similar outfits in the area?A fun place for supplies is Arts and Scraps in Ann Arbor, which carries all sorts of industrial offcuts, recycled whatsits, and nifty thingamabobs. I don't know how else to describe it. I had a few bushels of cellphone parts to get rid of, and A&S; took the keypads and cases off my hands eagerly. (They wouldn't take the PCBs, which I still need to dispose of.)Cranbrook's art school has a directory of metal suppliers in the area, and I've personally been getting stuff from Metal Mart at 13 and Dequindre in Warren, right around the corner. They're cool with small orders, and very laid-back about shopping. After saying hi, they'll generally just ask you to go back and browse until you find what you want. There's a nice rack of scraps and pieces up near the front, which usually has all I need. For electronics parts, ever since K40 on Van Dyke and Michigan Radio (the store, not the broadcasting service) closed I've been going to Abel Electronics in St Clair Shores, and once in a while I'll hit up RS Electronics in Livonia. I need to stop in at Galco Industrial Electronics one of these days, since they're also right around the corner. There's a new Grainger in Madison Heights on Whitcomb (13 1/2 mile) but I've never been in there.Okay, that's my braindump for now. If you know more suppliers, please reply to this post, otherwise start a new thread so this one stays on-topic and info-dense.

Can someone help me plan a solar USB charger(5V)?

I have three solar panels that I would like to use for a solar USB charging kit. I don't know how they should be put together. Two are 5V panels at 100 and 200MA each, and the third is 5.5V I believe at 320MA. The third panel came as part of a kit from Brown Dog Gadgets but I accidentally soldered two points together that weren't supposed to connect (they were too close together :( and the circuit started smoking). I'd like to make something that could charge my iPod touch 4th gen as well as other USB devices.
