universe expanding forever?

I saw this article on the BBC news site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-11030889 which has some astronomers apparently claiming that they have now worked out the fate of the universe from measurements on distant stars magnified through a galactic cluster. The final quote is: Professor Priyamvada Natarajan of Yale University, a leading cosmologist and co-author of this study, said that the findings finally proved "exactly what the fate of the Universe will be". This seems like a pretty bold claim to me - I was thinking that even if we had a lot of such measurements then we would still only be working out the geometry of space/time in the region of our universe that we are capable of seeing. This is likely to be only a small part of the whole universe due to the galactic horizon imposed by the age of the universe against the speed of light. Also, even assuming that the whole universe of 3D space and time that we live in behaved the way they are saying, this is still only working out what would happen due to the universe's own internal dynamics - there are ideas coming out now about our universe being part of a wider multiverse outside the realm that we experience as normal space and time, so even if the universe did expand into a "cold dead wasteland", then something could possibly infringe upon it from outside space/time and make something different happen at any time in the future. Some of what's going on here is just bad journalism - there's a longer article here: http://pda.physorg.com/darkenergy-universe-magnifyinglens_news201427857.html which gives a fuller version of the same quote: "The geometry, the content and the fate of the Universe are all intricately linked," says Natarajan. "If you know two, you can deduce the third. We already have a pretty good knowledge of the Universe's mass-energy content, so if we can get a handle on its geometry then we will be able to work out exactly what the fate of the Universe will be." This is a bit more cautious but there's still this idea that by making measurements like this from just one point in space and time we can work out the fate of the whole universe, which I don't really believe. So I reckon these sort of predictions should be taken with a massive pinch of salt, rather than definite statements of what we know. Which may be obvious, but I wanted to say it and see what anyone else thinks?

Would it be possible to "expand" a regular household printer?

Basically, what i'm talking about is taking apart a normal A4 printer and expading the paper feed and guide rails so it can accomodate paper of any size. The purely mechanical aspect certainly seems doable, although you'd run out of ink a lot faster, and I have no idea how to tackle the software issues. It seems theoretically possible, but i'm not sure about how you'd actually go about it - tips/help and any links would be appreciated.

How can I expand a men's pork pie hat? Answered

I just bought a men's pork pie hat that according to the website should fit my head. I ordered the XL which should be 60-61cm and should fit my head, but it didn't. Having spent $70 already on shipping, taxes and fees I would rather not spend $20 more on returning the shipping cost of returning it. The company I bought it from does not have a larger size either... What should I do to expand the size?

expanded graphite heat-sink? Answered

Okay , I've searched and searched and cannot find what I'm looking for. Maybe the other diy'ers can help me. 1.What I'm looking for is a heat-sink made of expanded graphite or (carbon, graphite (∥) as it might be known as well) that is actually in the shape of a traditional aluminum heat-sink with the fins and NOT in the shape of thin film as it is very commonly available. I don't even know if it exists or is manufactured by any company. I've tried contacting some companies about it but they have yet to get back to me. The reason I want this is for the tremendous increase in heat conductivity as in this chart shown on this webpage http://physics.info/conduction/ . The application I am trying to use it for needs a raised, elongated surface area to displace heat semi-uniformly, hence why I need fins like a traditional heat-sink instead of the commonly available film expanded graphite online. 2. If it does exist or is able to be manufactured, would it be a ridiculously priced part or would it be a reasonable priced part? (Just doing small scale tests for now so it would be the size of a FET finned sink). 3. From what I've read it seems possible by maybe layering the films into a stacked lattice, keeping heat transfer perpendicular to the lattice, but what are your thoughts all? (I question bonding the layers myself but I don't know if you could hard press the layers together without a bonding agent since any bonding agent being used I believe would reduce the thermal conductivity quite a bit, but I'm not incredibly familiar with expanded graphite). Any and all help would be appreciated from this wonderful community Best regards, Velesh

Battery Holder From Dilated PVC Hose?

I'm trying to widen about 1 foot of PVC hose. Ie. I want to dilate the interior diameter so 4 AA batteries will fit inside end to end. I'm trying to make a battery holder for my helmet light. The PVC hose is like siphon tube and I want to use it as a battery holder but it's a little too narrow. I tried heating the hose up with steam and jamming a lubricated metal pipe inside. This worked for a few inches but then there was too much friction. I also tried a smaller metal pipe along with a chopstick but I ended up puncturing the hose. So the question is: What is a good way of getting this segment of siphon hose a little bit wider? Or what else would be a nice waterproof and discreet battery holder for a helmet?

Help... PCF8574T (Expanding "Nano's" Digital Outputs)

- When I saw my RGB Chromatograph clock my teacher built from a kit  I was so impressed with it I  jumped the gun & ordered the parts so I could make one with an arduino version, I never thought much about it, thats so simple I could do in a few hours no problem except I overlooked one simple thing.... This clock uses six 10mm RGB Leds, two for the hour, two for the minutes & two for the seconds, each led has 3 inputs & 1 ground, thats a total of 18 outputs,  thats not including a few other inputs used for status indicators, along with a few inputs for buttons, the problem is that a Nano doesnt have enough digital outputs & I completely overlooked that fact. Anyways I started looking for I/O expanders when I realized that I have a few 1602 displays & PCF8574T backpacks, I have heard some people claim that it can be used to provide an additional 16 digital outputs, if true then it that would resolve my issue very easy Has anyone done this? or example sketch how I could deploy the PCF8574 this way, for example a blink sketch that defines a pin on the PCF8574 as an outputs & turns on a LED connected to the pin Thank you much...

Expanding Thought Process, the Mind, and General Creativity

I believe that, for the utmost of simplicity, I should begin this topic with the fact that I am a teenager who is quiet passionate about electronics, engineering, and teaching others in general. I have run several websites (each generating a plus of 200 unique visitors/day), created many circuits for school applications (projects), and many similar forms of expressing oneself such as writing. Being just about 15 today, my mind is far from creative, though. Less then three years ago, I was at, what is at this point, my "creative prime". I was publishing quality articles daily for my website, and greatly grew in the ranks of superiority among other websites in my niche. At ages 12 and 13, I was pushing content out - in addition to designing many webpages through core-coding languages - on a daily basis, requiring a load on my creativity to be pulled. Nonetheless, I always managed to tap into my inner-creativity and pull out great ideas. The Point of This Thread Less then two years later, though, I'm stuck in a bit of a muddy puddle. I cannot tune into my own creativity, for the well that it is is now very much dried up. I'm looking to somehow expand my mind and thought process. Are there any activities (keep it legal, guys(;   ) that can help? It'd be a huge inspiration. I can come up with the ideas for circuits and execute them, but from there, all of my creations fall short - they don't end up how I pictured them. The visual aspect of my brain is, uh, malfunctioning. Thanks(:

First project completed...now let's expand it!

My wife is interested in ghost hunting shows like TAPS and Ghost Hunters International. She even joined a local Paranomal Society. The first thing she wanted to buy was an EMF detector for a whopping $175. Now, I don't believe in ghosts, but I support my wife, so instead of buying her an OTS EMF detector, I decided to build her this one. Thanks Computergeek! Oddly, the first thing that popped into my head when I finished building the Arduino EMF detector was a quote from Keano Reeves from Point Break, "I caught my first tube today....Sir." It's appropriate though, in the sense that he was just getting started in the bank robbery investigations. I'm pretty happy with this build...I had a couple of issues in hardware and code that I was able to troubleshoot myself. And it all works! So this was pretty easy, even for a newbie. Now, what I want to do is add a data logger that records values to flash memory. You can probably see where I'm going with this (as a non-believer). If you remove the human element from the situation, is there still paranomal activity? Or put another way, if a tree falls down in the middle of the forest and no one is around to hear it...does it still make noise? If anyone has any ideas, tips, or suggesstions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks for a great online community! LorienD

LASER BEAM "EXPANDER"... Low-Cost INSTRUCTABLES Version?

I didn't know where else to post this - let me know if I should repost it elsewhere. I'm looking for plans{?} for a laser beam "expander" that doesn't cost hundreds of US dollars. {I'm on a BUDGET.} Short version of why: If you read my profile, my hobbies include 'Kite Aerial Video'. Basically, it's aerial video shot by a camera suspended from a kite line. {Usually done that way versus putting the cam directly on the kite.} I'm 'researching' using a laser {or lasers} for night time illumination with a miniature low-light video camera for wildlife / nature observation. Most of the stuff I need - including the vid cam and laser - aren't too expensive. However, the cheapest expander I have found was over $300 USD. I was hoping I could find something cheaper here. I know someone who did something similar with a Generation 3 night vision monocular. However, a Gen 3 night vision imager is too expensive for me. And for KAV, the cheaper Gen 1 & 2 imagers won't work. Thanks in advance. -Allan, aka RocKiteman N.E. North Carolina, USA

Holey Expanded Polystyrene! Weevils are eating my noodles!

And they're eating their way in through the styrofoam cup. I didn't think they could do that.  I thought there was a rule against that, or that they would not like the taste of styrofoam, or something.  And how did they get through the layer of shrink wrap plastic that's wrapped around the styrofoam cup?  I knew you would not believe it either. That's why I took some pictures. You see?  You see those little evil weevil-sized holes in the side of the cup? See the circular pile of weevil dust on the top of the dried noodles?  I told you it was true. I really don't mind the taste of weevils in my noodles, but the darned styrofoam cup is not going to hold water with those holes in it.  So I tape over those holes with clear plastic (cellophane?) tape, and now I can put some hot water on those noodles. The last picture shows the noodles in their hot, wet, state. There is a weevil carcass barely visible, or maybe it is just a shed exoskel (I think they molt) floating on top of that green pea, on the left there. Edit: I just noticed the finished, empty, cup has dead weevils stuck to the sides, and these are a pretty good example of what weevils and weevil exoskeletons look like, for anyone who has not seen weevils before.

Westward Group Alternatives Editorial: Expand Alternative Energy with Caution

Consumers should have the chance to produce their own electricity, but other customers shouldn't bear the cost Lawmakers are considering a package of bills that would expand the state’s renewable energy program in several ways, including making it easier for consumers to be compensated for creating their own solar and other forms of alternative power. Michiganians deserve as much autonomy as possible in choosing and generating their own electricity. As long as reliability is maintained and the grid is able to handle additional power, government shouldn’t arbitrarily cap participation. But while greater electricity freedom is a step in the right direction for Michigan consumers, changes to the way electric grids function must be handled with caution. Electric utilities and consumers who rely on traditional electricity shouldn’t be punished in the process. House Bill 5673 in the state House Energy and Technology Committee would lift restrictions on the number of residents who can participate in the program to create their own power, which is called “net metering.” It would also lift restrictions on the amount of electricity consumers can generate and sell back to energy companies, which makes sense. But creating a system in which consumers and energy companies both buy and sell power poses new problems. Caps for participation have existed to keep grids secure and to allow alternative energy to be added gradually to mitigate risks for electric power grid operators. The retail rate consumers currently pay for electricity includes many costs — the actual power being generated, along with fixed costs for overhead, grid maintenance and security and general operations. When consumers who generate their own electricity are compensated at the full retail rate, as net metering does, those fixed costs get shifted onto consumers who are not generating their own electricity. Alternative energy users still rely on main utility grids 100 percent of the time, because their supply and demand never fully match. And a patch of clouds for an hour or two might mean a solar user needs to tap into the grid. They should pay for the overhead and operational costs they incur at a moment’s notice. A recent California Public Utility Commission study on net metering showed consumers who invested in rooftop solar shift the fixed electric power grid costs to consumers who can’t afford expensive rooftop solar systems, live in multifamily housing or don’t have a rooftop appropriate for solar panels. This means California customers who don’t use net metering will pay an extra $1.1 billion in shifted costs each year by 2020. And the majority of solar customers have higher incomes than the average consumer, meaning the fixed utility costs are shifted onto lower-income customers. In California, 78 percent have higher incomes and in Nevada, 73 percent do. Another bill in the Michigan package seeks to set fair-value pricing based on market demand for electricity being sold back to companies. If consumers produce power at 3 p.m., a high-demand time, they would be paid more than if they produce power at 3 a.m., when there is little demand. Mandating electric utilities buy back electricity at retail rates, however, ignores the fact that utilities can produce the same product for much less or buy it at a wholesale rate. This increases the overall cost of electricity, which in turn is passed onto consumers. Alternative energy usage in Michigan increased 18 percent between 2012 and 2013, according to the Michigan Public Service Commission. That trend is likely to increase, and it’s good the Legislature is getting ahead of these issues for consumers. As lawmakers find ways to expand the state’s alternative energy programs, they must consider overall grid safety and minimize burdensome costs on consumers who can’t afford or don’t want to invest in their own electricity generating systems.

How can a rocket using liquid hydrogen and oxygen force a rocket upwards?

If hydrogen and oxygen are burned together they produce water.  You need a lot of hydrogen and oxygen to make a very small amount of water. If when burning those two gases together produces water, which takes up much less space, how can it possibly propel a rocket into space. You need expanding gases to force something forward. Hydrogen and oxygen when burned together IMPLODE they do not EXPLODE ! The two gases contract into a liquid they do not expand like conventional combustion of solid fuel !

A central non-electric grid electricity storage system for solar and wind energy with future expandibility

I have been thinking and reading about building a system so that I could surf using a laptop, charge lights, charge mp3 players, mobile phones, rechargeable batteries so that if possible they would not need electricity from the grid, rather that would be optional when there would not be enough power that was found otherwise. I had first thought to work this out in a group as a kind of project, as there are others but I don't really know that many people with those skills. The idea is that you start very basic, with say one solarcell and the electronics. The electronics should allow plug to when you wnat to have the money you can add another, in serie or parallels so they give more power. This can then be plugged in to a system that stores that electricity in batteries. The system should also be so that it allows to connect for example one or more small selfbuild wind turbines, like the ones found here, so that in the best case you get electricity from both, or one of both but with the possible option to get electricity from the grid so that if necessary you can charge something from there. That would mean it would include an electricity meter, and maybe the possibillity to add that self powering powerplant as well.So basically you have two projects. Or maybe three. The casing to add small solarcells in, and then be able to add several casing together. The electronics to put them in serie and then a central electronic system, which allows to connect solar casings, self build windmills, batteries, the self powering power plant, possibly the possibility to add it do the grid, and last but not least the possibbility to charge things. That could be a seperate part of electonics. As one of the things I had been thinking about is to allow to connect fuel cells to it. I prefer us in what already exist, so I would suggest using the following instructabels projects or learning from them:a Savonius Wind Turbine,Ted Baer's Bicycle Wheel Windmill, savonius windmill alternator, introPringles Wind Turbine,DIY 1000 watt wind turbine,A remote controlled power RGB LED mood light,Power LED's - simplest light with constant-current circuit,Circuits for using High Power LED's,personal powerPlant, ... others may follow laterLike for example the Charge Any USB Device by Riding Your Bike but then connected to the portable usb batteries, so they could be also connected to the central charge unit. The connectors could be usb connectors. I saw some time back a connector which had a 4 port usb block attached to it, but other connector types would be usable as well. In adition, it should be able to switch on automitcally when the sun goes down, but allow a control a button or remote control to trun them manually off, so that no needless electricity is wasted. I know this is a lott at once, but its more my kind of thing to work on more complete/complex systems. The lights that would be used with this would be led lights, powered a la sunjar, using the same technique. So that them turning off and on, is mostly controlled by the sun going up and down. My idea was that with such a system, I could add piece by piece, and still have light, and electricity indepency from the grid, and I would know the cost, so that once I would have bought the pieces it would generate electricty whitout to much further cost.Solarcells would typically provide 8V or 12 V, this could be smaller ones, the casing would be is supose made of plexiglas, with pieces that standup to keep them appart, and holes for the cables, and a backside, that stays dry as well. This is what is on the drawing: the solarcells feed into the sersol which puts them in not parallel and then transport the current to the cen1 which directs it to the batteries to store it. The same for the windmills. But they go to the windmills, which puts there current in not parallel. The powerreg, regulates the power of the personal power plant, it can discharge, but also just regulate. There is connector to the grid, so if there is no electricity or not enough electricity it can be taken from the grid. There is the possibillity of a remote, which would work in connection with the cen1. The batteries might need extra electronics to see which one is full and to divert the current to another battery, and to get current back to the powersockets which could be regular oens, but also preferably usb ones. The other two connections could be for for example fuel cells, or something else. The control solar cells is simply to turn the connected sunjars which may still each have there own solarcell, on or off by the rising or going down of the sunn. The remote, is to turn them off manually. The casing should be sturdy but not to expensive, it may have to include somethings to keep it right, but the idea is to be able to put them after glass as well. The idea is that the electronics design would be free, or very cheap, so that people can build this themselves, the casing shouldn't be to expensive but that can differ on taste, most parts or thing likes windmills would be the DIY type or possibly ones you can buy as well, and most parts would have to be, off the shelf. I'll try to add a basic drawing, and some sketches, to give you a better idea. I'm not that good at that, i'd admit.
