Experimental engine Answered

Would connecting like 2 or more single cylender horizontal engines like briggs and strattons together flywheel to shaft run as like a 2 cylender in line engine? or has anyone done it even? example : if [0- represents an engine with the [ being the flywheel, the 0 the crankcase/block and the - a shaft then this is my idea [0-[0-[0- and so on like a two cylinder would be [0-[0- would this work? what would i have to do to get this to work?

Experimental sounds/music

I'm just curious about the people out there who are interested in ambient/experimental music and creating their own. What programs/microphones do you use? What things do you find yourself often recording? Do you manipulate the way your recordings sound to achieve a certain sound? I've just started recording with Bi-Naural Mics. When I want to do field recordings, I use I mini disc recorder. I offer all of my works free to listen to on Jamendo (maybe I should make an instructable on that site)!

Homebuilding of experimental aircraft?

Hello Instructables I am a professional aerospace engineer who homebuilds aircraft in my garage when not doing so for work. I live and work at the Mojave Airport which is a hotbed for aircraft homebuilding stretching all the way back to the 80's. The experimental aircraft community does not have anything like what you all are doing on this website. When I found your site the first thought was that I had finally found the place to talk about buillding airplanes. But I see no such topics on the site. While fundamentally I assume the problem is only that the channel has not yet been created or there is a liability problem, I wonder if there isn't more to it. Is the thought of designing and building and flying your own airplane not as awesome for others as it is for those of us who live in Mojave? Is there something that can be done to make this exciting world more exciting to people (like yourselves) who take such pride and make such investments in doing cool stuff in your garages? Is there a cheap creation to make a 110v 9-45 mA power system?

I am looking at three ways for this right now. My preferred long game is a solar cell block (minor one, i am not sure of the power output calculator cells have, but along that size I am guessing) that feeds into a digital sine wave form for my output ( low end of power is fine.) I need the sine wave chips to do the build on a +/-110 V wave then, but the ampere I need is ultra tiny by current standards. The total power of this concept is about 1 watt. Perhaps a amp limiter off a wall circuit second as my second but probably easier choice. Reading up on some interesting theories, but to test them accurately, I need this base component(s). I will post the results of what I do with the device pas or fail, as I think it will be important to some of the current over unity power system theories bouncing around to have good well documented answers.

"New " old material for experimentation.

This video is about Nitinol memory metal engines that are basically Stirling heat engines and work on a very low temperature difference. I first say this material while watching a video on the founder of 'The Venus Project'. He had small spring that he would stretch out of shape and the heat it - it would come back to its original form and shape. I thought it was neat but didn't see the potential of the material. This video is from a 1970 CNN broadcast - when CNN was news instead of a propaganda machine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GfYlRakZ6Y The material is available on the web somewhere as others have purchased it since I showed them the video. At this point in time I am more of an information messenger and unable to partake in experimentation. So have at it guys and gals. God Bless

Will this experimental musical instrument work?

So I got this brilliant idea to try and make an instrument out of PVC that can play two or maybe three notes at once. Problem is, I don't know if it will work. The sax mouthpiece would produce one note and the two recorders another. Will the recorders even make noise from the air that it gets from the sax mouthpiece? Or should i just ditch the sax mouthpiece and have the two recorders being played? Even if it did work, I would only be able to play a really simple song with only three harmonized notes.

Dutchj's experimental K'nex side-arm

Having finished my rifle and finding myself with nothing to do ( Don't worry, it will still be posted this week ), I thought I'd finally have a go at side-arms. So I built the TDS2, and hated it ( I'm going to get bashed for that, I know it ). I decided to have a look at some others like Oompa-Loompa's unofficial side-arm, and the one Bakenbitz posted a picture of on KI some time ago. Afterwards, I came up with this. This side-arm is powerful because the magazine is at the front and the trigger is at the very back. It's also kept reasonably small because the magazine is inside the handle. It fires grey connectors. It's a bit clumsy, but it is only a first version. I can probably make it a bit smaller and more user friendly if I remake it. Tell me what you think, and as always, constructive criticism is more then welcome

Film maker needs help!

Hey guys, So I'm an experimental a 21 year old film maker. Basically I try to innovate with film and perception which is how I won the Sheridan College Media arts award for experimental film making last year (this is however why I'm expected to make something great this year). My latest notion is in spinning camera's. If a camera is spinning (attached to the end of a drill let say) you get a blur but because I'm an animator I'm familiar with the persistence of vision. This is a frequent DIYS project (persistence of vision clocks) from what I can tell. I need to create a very simple 5 or 6 led light that, when a camera is spinning in front of it, will display what ever I wish (text, images, ect). So instead of the lights spinning the camera is. Obviously more LED's the more complicated it can be. Now... I don't know where to begin with my questions. Could I pay you to create user friendly software and hardware? Are you willing to help for recognition purposes? Can you only make software? Can you only make hardware? Where do I begin to inquire? I guess this project is for those who are interested in innovation more than anything... I really need a community of friends on this one :(

Failed Experimentation : AI : My new creature is alive !

.It's alive !Alive, yes, but not as much intelligent than expected ..........Instead of watching a stupid movie at TV, I decided to write a tiny AI programme all in PHP.My goal was to get some functionalities comparable to logic programming languages like Prolog. In simpler words : I wanted to create a programme that could learn facts, and find the solutions to some logical problems. For instance :> blue is colour.Okay.> carrot is vegetable.Okay.> blue is colour ?Yes.> blue is vegetable ?No.> carrot is colour ?No.etc.So far, I can teach it facts in the form of 3-words-affirmations, and I can ask it questions and definitions, and the creature is able to find some connections between facts.Experimentation #1 : > red is colour.Okay> black is colour.Okay> orange is colour.Okay> orange is fruit.Okay(Here, we have a trap : orange is both a color and a fruit.)> red is colour ?Yes> black is fruit ?No> orange is colour ?Yes> orange is fruit ?Yes(Good. The beast did not fall in the trap.)> translate : red- "colour"> translate : orange- "colour"- "fruit"> translate : colour- "red"- "black"- "orange"Good ! The beast can give a sense to the words it learned.Experimentation #2 :> Paul is human.Okay> human eat fruit.Okay> apple is fruit.Okay> human is animal.Okay> animal eat meat.Okay> animal is mortal.OkayNow, let's see if it can "chain" the facts in a logical manner :> translate : Paul- "human"Here it should have replied : "human", "animal" and "mortal", since human are animals, and animals are mortal ...Let's see how it defines "Paul" :> define : Paul- Paul is humanMy creature seems obviously narrow minded ...Let's quiz it now :> Paul is apple ?No> Paul is fruit ?No> Paul is human ?Yes> human is Paul ?Yes> Paul is Paul ?Yes> Paul eat fruit ?Yes> Paul eat apple ?Yes> Paul is animal ?Yes> Paul eat meat ?No> Paul is mortal ?YesAs we can see, it successfully (and surprisingly) replied correctly to each question by connecting facts together, excepted for "Paul eat meat ?".At this question, it should have replied "yes", since it knows that "Paul is human", "human is animal" and "animal eat meat". But it did not ... ... and it's bizarre since it can reply correctly to "Paul is mortal ?", from "Paul is human", "human is animal" and "animal is mortal", or to "Paul eat apple ?" from "Paul is human", " human eat fruit" and "apple is fruit" ...Interesting, isn't it ? =o)If you want, you can submit your facts and questions to my experimental creature (which has no name yet) =o)What would be interesting also, is to confront it to a "paradox" just to see how it behaves ! =o)20080625 : For those of you who would like to have a look at the guts of the beast, here is available the source code. However, keep it mind it's a spaghetti-code and many function names are in french (as well as comments). Also, this version relies on MySQL to store and query facts (I'm planning to replace it with simple arrays though), which make the code slightly more complicated than required ...The main code makes less than 250 lines =o)There is no direct input interface : instead, it use scripts (exp_*.php) that call functions. For example :declarer("red","is","colour"); // <---- declarationsdeclarer("black","is","colour");declarer("orange","is","colour");declarer("orange","is","fruit");verifier("red","is","colour"); // <---- questionsverifier("black","is","fruit");verifier("orange","is","colour");verifier("orange","is","fruit");... which is slightly more complicated than what I showed above for the sake of comprehension and simplification !

23 stage no-capacitor full auto coilgun

*********I have updated my design since posting this topic. The video is the more current design than what is written below.********** I came to the conclusion that using capacitors to provide the power for a coil gun is a stupid idea. A bold statement I know. The reason is that they are big and heavy, take time to charge, and need charging circuits. Also, the sharp rise in current that comes from capacitors is bad unless you are making an induction style coilgun, because the induced currents will hurt efficiency. If coil guns are ever going to be a practical hand held weapon it will need to be lighter, simpler / less delicate, and more powerful than what you will find on the internet if you look up coil guns. A rate of fire that is competitive with conventional guns will also be needed if a coil gun will be used for anything other than target shooting or maybe hobby hunting. So I designed a coilgun to meet these requirements. Visit my website for a full explanation of the design: http://www.ourbadscience.com/#!em-guns/cwjy I realized that a coilgun would not be a practical infantry weapon until batteries are more advanced anyway, so that just adds to the list of why capacitors are out. It will be powered directly off of the batteries, and have many coil stages. This allows a very high rate of fire. To get that rate of fire with capacitors you would need several capacitor banks charging at offset times, so after each bank fires another is just finished charging. That would be terribly bulky. The lower voltage from the batteries will give comparatively slow current rise in the coils which normally would make the coil timing weird. I plan to use an unconventional coil timing though. All the coils will be activated at once, and the coils behind the projectile will be shut off as it passes them. This will have several advantages: -The coils will only be powering up for a split second at the beginning. Most coils will already be at full power when the projectile gets to them (that is not the case in most coil guns). -Induced current will not be any issue. -Since the coils will all act as one coil, the projectile will be drawn toward the center of all the coils that are on. Timing of the shut off of the coils will not need to be perfect. This will be a pre-tuned passively timed system. I want to use a small adjustable electronic timer for the switch-off timing. This will require some work in the initial adjustment of the timing, but even actively switched coil guns (with optical sensors or something) require that. the advantage of a passive system over an active system is cost and simplicity, and you can pack the coils tighter on the barrel if you are not putting a sensor between each stage. That matters with 23 stages! As I said check out my website to see more details and pictures for this and other projects: http://www.ourbadscience.com/#!em-guns/cwjy

Using stimulated emission (the same effect that causes lasing), a group led by Nicolas Gisin of the University of Geneva proposes to amplify one photon of an entangled pair to a level that is visible to the naked eye. Observers watching through polarizing filters would then be able to directly see the "spooky action at a distance" of quantum correlations.

Nice paper: Constraints on possible "antigravity" of antimatter

A new preprint on arXiv does an excellent job of deriving strong constraints on the possible "antigravity" (gravitational repulsion) of antimatter, based on very precise experimental data and a minimum of theoretical assumptions. Karshenboim goes through several complex and detailed analyses to set tight limits on antigravity effects. The argument I like best goes as follows: if antimatter feels a gravitational repulsion relative to matter, then "pure neutral" bodies, like positronium (bound states of e+ and e-) or photons (which are their own antiparticles) should feel no gravity at all. That trivially contradicts the gravitational deflection of light, and therefore can't be true.

Where to start prototyping with straingauges?

Can anyone recommend a reasonably-priced prototyping kit for straingauges or something similar, and/or a good document on how to actually design around these beasts? What I'm trying to build is essentially a box with a handle on each end, which can measure the force applied inward or outward on those ends. Measurement range would probably about +/- 40 pounds, though I'd be happier if it could tolerate (but not necessarily measure) higher forces just in case someone does something stupid. The measurement doesn't have to be on a smooth curve but does need to be continuous and repeatable so I can calibrate it reasonably accurately. If you think of it as a kind of game controller, where you're squeezing it together or pulling it apart to varying degrees to make the game respond, that's fairly close to what I need. Doesn't necessarily have to be straingauge, but needs to be something with essentially that behavior -- I really want to measure the pressure/tension applied with imperceptable motion (for fast response). And yes, I do need both directions. Unfortunately all the documentation I've found on straingauges talks about the electronic aspects. and says very little about the practical mechanical aspects of working with them. And I haven't yet seen anything resembling a reasonably priced experimenter's/prototyping kit from any of the manufacturers. Yeah, I suppose I could cannibalize an electronic scale for the first prototype... but I'd still like to learn the proper approach and find an experimenter-friendly source of parts.

Electrovibrations

Hi A while ago i read about electorvibration to create tactile feedback on a conductive surface. It sounds very interesting and i'd like to experiment with it. After some reading (http://www.disneyresearch.com/wp-content/uploads/teslatouchuist2010.pdf) I found that all you basically have to do is send a sinusoidal wave through a conductive surface. This can be and amplified DC signal. In the paper they talk about a Vpp (peak to peak voltage) of 120V at a current of 0.5mA and a 80- 400hz. frequency. My question is: How to amplify a generated sinusoidal signal (0-5V, 80-400 hz.) to a signal of 0 -120V and limit the current to 0.5 mA so i can use it for some experimentation? Cheers, R.

Interfacing with an LCD display from a Canon multifunction printer?

If, as I suspect, the module is an OEM part, and datasheets are not available, do you have any recommendations as to how I could try to experimentally determine what the contacts do? (I got it for free, so It's not too critical if I destroy it...)
