Will this battery explode??

Silly question, but I really wanna be on the safe side.  I just received this battery charger for my phone, but wanted to change the case, so i removed the original case.  Then I looked at the battery, and saw that the (-) of the battery is not soldered to the PCB at all, only the (+).  I know that lithium batteries are dangerous, so I just wanted to ask if it's safe to use. It was like that, I didn't accidentally rip it of. There are even no marks on the (-) connector sticking out from the battery. Can someone please let me know if it's safe to use?  I added some images pointing out the place and the board.  Thanks a lot for your help. George

How can I make exploding cupcakes?

This is for my halloween costume this year (i won't say what it is until i finish it and put up an instructable of my own, haha!) i had two ideas for explosive tasty confections: either using little firecrackers as candles, or putting some type of exploding pellet or capsule inside the cupcakes that would explode on impact. a friend told me about something that may or may not contain mercury, or i suppose it could have been magnesium since it's so flammable...it comes in little spheres/pellets/capsules that probably contain some of the same ingredients as flash powder, only in a more concentrated form. if such a thing exists, i would just bake cupcakes and squish the capsules into the bottoms of the cupcakes. i'm open to any other ideas. help please!

SMPS failure, the Gates of the MOSFETs exploded?????? Answered

I've just build an SMPS using a TL494 chip using the power circuit from this circuit from uzzors2k, it's just a standard half bridge in my case using IRFP460's. The MOSFETs are driven through a small transformer that itself is driven with a H-bridge.  Yesterday I was trying it's first mains power test slowly ramping up the voltage with a variac when at about 180VAC i could hear some fizzling from the circuit and at 200V the GATE's of the MOSFET's exploded violently, at close inspection there was no shorts or flashovers and the gates were the only thing that was damaged at all. One thing i noticed later was the output waveform of the power transformer, unlike the signal waveform it didnt exhibit the same 96% duty cycle but a 100% with a lot of ringing on the rising peaks of the square wave, i know this can probably be fixed by reducing the duty cycle but i cant see how it could've blew up the gates. I've included some pictures so you can see what i mean by explode, as you can see on the left Fet the gate pin has completely blown off and the copper has melted slightly and the right image the same happened but i cracked the Fet open with a hammer to see if there were any clues inside. I really dont have a clue why this happened and would appreciate some help, thanks in advance.

Radio Shack exploded this morning

In New York City, a Radio Shack exploded this morning. Well, to be more accurate, the sidewalk right in front of it exploded. A manhole explosion led to a transformer catching fire which led to 100 people being evacuated. So far, it looks like nobody was hurt, which is pretty amazing. But still, a "manhole explosion"? They just explode now? I thought that only happened in Die Hard. Link

trickle charger for 14AH battery?

Hi, i am looking into making a 12v UPS for my home cctv system. i have two 12v 7AH batterys like the type used in fire and burglar alarm panels. my aim is to have a 240v input which gets converted to 12vdc and powers my dvr and cameras. the power supply of the dvr alone is 5 amps so i would need 1 5 amp output and then 16 lower amp outputs for the cameras but i guess this could just be done with fuses. now, here is the tricky part: in whilst also powering the dvr and cameras, i also need it to charge my two battery's wired in parallel so theres 14 ah of 12v battery's to charge (i may also add more at a later date). in the event of a power loss, a relay or some other switching device will switch power to all the devices to the battery so that its backed up. the only problem is that i am new to battery charging and don't fancy blowing them up. schematics, help suggestions all greatly appreciated. thank-you. - Luke

F25 Anti-Personnel Grenade

INSTRUCTABLE DONE!!! LinkThis is the new grenade i talked about in my new magazine forum topic: HereIt uses a spring motor that is activate by pushing up the pin on the bottom (after being cranked) to fling shrapnel to distances not achievable by your average run-of-the-mill grenades...or should I say blunt throwing objects...*cough cough*. On average, this grenade can fling various shrapnel (green rods, ball joints and connectors, etc...) up to 25 feet. The best feature of the grenade, besides its blast radius, is how YOU DON'T NEED TO REASSEMBLE IT; you just reload the shrapnel, and toss again.I also have a slightly different version of this that can be fired from a Knex RPG!!!!! (coming later this year, because the M4 is using most of my pieces). If you want i will post an instructable for it but you can probably build from pictures.

Why do some capacitors have polarity? Answered

(Asked once already, but for some reason was not visible.) That is sort of a blanket question. I'm wondering: 1) why only some, and not all or none? 2) what (in their physical structure) causes them to have polarity? 3) why do we make ones that have polarity? Is there something prohibitive, like cost, or safety, making it so in the production? (okay, not safety, as may attest anyone who has seen a reversed capacitor explode.)

led wiring with 12 volts in AA batteries

i just made a huge 50cm x 130 cm inifinity mirror with 2 strands of 3528 led strip lighting left over approx 1' long left over. I am on the attempt of making small portable infinity mirrors and coaster seem like the best idea for them. i wired it all good and i am done now however i appear to have a problem Step 1: Infinity Coaster everything works well until it has been left on for 2 mins. even when i turn off the lights, the batteries get super hot. They are cheap dollar store AA batteries but almost too hot to touch even when it is turned off. i figured maybe i have a short somewhere but i cannot find one with the multimeter. is it just that i have too much amperage for too little of an LED strip? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvYCstmnIfY they stopped turning on the lights when they got hot but i tried again to shoot this video clip and they worked pretty good. A little slow to light up still so some of the juice is gone i imagine. if you know these strips give me a clue. if i find out the problem, i can make a solution and make another instructable on how its made with # 2. it is Christmas after all and somebody needs a coaster for their egg-nog.  these pics arent great let me know if you wanna see wiring more clearely

Exploding K-cups in a Keurig coffeemaker

Our Keurig coffeemaker is several years old. We began to see a ragged star opening in the top of the K-cups after brewing and coffee grounds various places outside the K-cup. All of the usual recommended fixes were no help. (See below.) This video gave me a solution that worked very well for us. (I have no personal connection to the video or its maker.) We now see only a neat round hole in the top of our K-cups after brewing, not a torn and ragged opening. Video summary: Remove two screws under the flip-up cover above the K-cup holder. Remove the decorative plastic cover by tugging at it. Snip the zip tie that keeps the soft white tube on the fitting. Pull the tube from the fitting. Hold the end of the tube over a cup. Cycle water through the Keurig until several cups come out clean. Clear the upper and lower needles of coffee grounds. Attach the tube with a new zip tie and screw the cover back in place. One word of caution: Very hot water spewed onto the soft skin at the base of my thumb and it was very uncomfortable. I draped a folded towel over my hand while hot water was being expelled from the disconnected tube at the top of the Keurig. Also, I ran quite a number of cups of water through the Keurig until I got three consecutive cups of water without any debris particles of any kind in the water. (I did not see an accumulation of coffee grounds like the man describes in the video, but I saw what was similar to pieces of a brown wing from a housefly.) In the two or three days following the procedure in the video we did occasionally have a K-cup blowout, but have seen only perfect round holes after a week or so, and we probably brew a dozen cups of coffee each day. The usual recommendations-- +Keurig's official recommendation as the cause of grounds migrating outside the K-cup is too much air inside the K-cup as evidenced by a domed lid on the K-cup before it is punctured. Their recommendation is to poke the top of the K-cup with a pin before putting it into the Keurig. Because of my observations and experience, I give very little credence to this. +Accumulated lime from the water needs to be descaled from the inside of the Keurig. Lime accumulation does cause a partially full cup of brewed coffee. We regularly descale our machine. We have also run water through our machine whenever we have seen grounds in our coffee and some grounds came out with the water. Descaling is a good thing to do, but I doubt it has a connection to bursting K-cups and grounds where they do not belong.  +Clogged upper and lower needles. The video will direct you to use a wire to insure open passageways inside the needles above and below the K-cup.

I'm seeking ideas for building a prop exploding dynamite stick

Hi all, I'm building a prop dynamite stick that will "explode" onstage. It will be standing upright on a crate (so I can hide mechanisms in the crate) and will suddenly explode. I have a pyrotech license and can use gerbs to make a small fiery explosion but I'd like to SAFELY make the stick of dynamite explode into several pieces (foam???) without any risk of hurting anyone in the audience (this is because an actor will find and collect the pieces of dynamite later in the play). I'm seeking thoughts on how you guys might approach a build like this. Cheers! Damian

SEEKING: I need a safe way/fx rig to explode a watermelon on a tv show...? Answered

Hi gang, I'm working on a show and I need to make a live audience believe that their 'telepathic psychic powers' have made a watermelon explode. I can build a booth with a lexan/plexiglass window so that watermelon doesn't spray the audience, this will also allow me to hide special fx rigs in it. I've done a somewhat similar rig before where I made the watermelon fall unnoticed through a trap door while a nozzle simultaneously sprayed watermelon guts against the plexi (so it looked like it exploded but didn't really). This time I'd really like to make it blow up.  I have a pyrotech license and have access to some basic explosives, but I think I would prefer to explore compressed air-based explosions. Anyway, any ideas would be appreciated. Please find a rough sketch attached. Many thanks! DAZU

Make water balloons explode in mid-air

Hello to all, This is my first post, so if I make a mistake I apologize in advance. I am looking for a way to make water balloons explode in mid-air. It must be safe (i.e. I am not going to shoot them out of the sky with some sort of projectile) and I would prefer not to utilize some form of explosive device. I would prefer something I could time and continuously reproduce. Whether it be an apparatus or a chemical reaction. It has to be safe to be done around children, environmentally friendly, in other words I don't want to cause anyone or anything harm other than the balloon itself. I would like to be able to make the balloons burst at either a specific time after launching or throwing or have them burst after reaching a certain height in the air. If I can figure out a way to this I will gladly share my whole idea. Thanks in advance.

Exploding color pigments - need ideas to make

Hello everyone, I am working on a film project and I need to make small explosions of colored pigments and/or powder. Below is a link to a few sample photos of the affect that I am trying to achieve. http://photogrvphy.com/pedro-aguilar-bang/ I have tried many different techniques from impact to compressed air. But I am not getting the shapes that I am looking for. I am thinking  that the best technique might be some sort of controlled explosion. This could be something detonated within a pile of the powder or potentially (and more complicated) and fully concealed shell that includes the powder. I will primarily be shooting straight down above the powder so it really only needs to explode up and out. And again, these are relatively small blasts. I would estimate the powder blasts in the images from the link are only approximately 2' in width at the most. And help would be greatly appreciated!

Help!! It's 3am and I have a bubbling and squeaking battery!

Please help! I procured an electric wheelchair today (worn and torn, but in good shape.  It had 2 12v batteries, little smaller than an auto batt.  Didn't write down the amperage tho...The batteries were visually inspected for bowed or expanded sides, cracks, oxidation.  Everything appeared in order.  They have likely been sitting for some time.  Stupidly, I did not check electrolyte levels.  Oops.  Could easily be low.  I plugged the charger into the mainboard for 30 minutes, watching closely.  No issues, no overheating.  I left it for another 2 hours.  Again, no noticeable issues.  I tested the drive motors by controlling it around my driveway briefly. Power was very low.  It worked, but clearly lacked juice. I plugged the batts in for another 4 or 5 hours.  But after that time, I noticed a crackling/squealing (faint) sound.  As if pressure was escaping.  Bad news.  I had the chair chassis (and batts) in my workshop, and now I was afraid it may blow, contaminating everything.  The batteries feel warm. One more than the other. Beginning to panic, I threw on my goretex, respirator, goggles and gloves and carefully detached the battery cable from the main board.   I've never had one of this size blow, and have no idea what it could do.  very hesitantly, I rolled it into my garage, and closed the door.  Now I'm afraid to sleep, because I'm concerned about it. Is this Normal old battery behavior?  Could this be due to low electrolytes?  A small crack in the case?  Is there anything I can do besides wait?  I'm not real anxious to go too close for too long.  Is there anything I can do that would not increase hazard?  I'm about to throw a tarp over it, but is there a high flammability risk if a high amperage 12v were to blow? Guidance highly appreciated.  Thank you.

What could possibly make my LED explode?

I am not very good with electronics but i do mess with them. I was testing a little momentary push button I got with a LED using my electronics test lab thing from radioshack . i hooked it up to 6v and pressed the button and something popped so being stupid i pressed it again and immediately the LED exploded small sparks flew from it and a piece of the plastic broke off and flew at my face. Why did it do this the only thing i can imagine causing this was that i didn't put a resistor in but I've hooked LEDs up to straight voltage before only momentarily to test them and nothing bad happened. from my experience 6v even 9v has never blown an LED up why this one? Please tell me if u have an idea why I'm about to start wearing safety goggles when working with LEDs cause I'm pretty scared.
