Exploring Insrtuctables

I like to, occasionally, explore thr instructables numerically.  How do I start this progression from well into the list, say at number three hundred?            Hubiewan

Urban Exploration, Anyone?

Hello, I like to Urban Explore. I live in an area that has limited opportunities, but we make the best of it. This topic is essentially an open stage for anything about Urban Exploration and things like it. I will start by asking, what is the coolest place you have explored? Any tips for fellow explorers? Cautionary tales? Looking for places to explore in your area?

DIY Space Exploration

Hi guys, I heard about a guy here thinking about getting a payload into space on DIY terms.Running with the idea, it turns out that commercial off-the-shelf satellite space will run you about 8 grand.Moving away from rockets, the MAKE: team managed to use 'weather balloons' and helium to hit 109,000 feet. (http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2007/03/diy_space_make_video_podc.html)My idea/question in this.If you can get a payload near space, what if your payload is a small rocket that fires at the peak height, could you drag something (kicking and screaming) into orbit?Thoughts and discussion here, I'm really excited about this!ParadoxDetected :)

Explore groups to find one you like! link

Hello,   i made my account and went straight to customize my profile.   in Groups tab, under Settings, under Customize all i see is:  Manage Your Groups You haven't joined any groups. Explore groups to find one you like!  Nothing wrong with that since i haven't joined any groups. Problem is that the link doesn't work.  It returns a:  403 Forbidden Request forbidden by administrative rules.  I know i can join groups from the Community tab in homepage, but i just wanted to point out the flaw cause i really love Instructables.  Peace,  Panagiotis.

Why is the "Featured" Filter Automatically on when I Explore Instructables?

I really don't like it when I'm just looking at instructables and I realize I'm not seeing all of them because the "Featured" filter is on.  For example, I click on the "Explore" button, then I click "Technology", then, I see that the only types of instructables I've been seeing are featured.

Filter Searches

There needs to be filters after a search so that people can narrow what they're looking for to relevant threads.  i.e., if I'm looking for something that would most likely be in wood working, than I should be able to filter out anything that involves food.  Categories should be similar to those found in explore.  Allowing additional tags would further help this experience.

Browsing frustration

There seems to be at least 3 different formats for browsing Instructables. The frustration I have is, if I want to spend any amount of time browsing a specific searched subject, I don't dare wander off the main page to view an Instuctable. Once I do, I have to start at the beginning of the many pages I have preciously browsed and scroll through dozens of pages to return to my spot. A similar thing happens with the contest pages. It keeps loading more entries on the same page as I get to the bottom of the page. If I view an entry, I have to start at the beginning again. When a contest has over 600 entries like one of the current contests, I find myself not looking at ibles I'd like to see because I don't want to find my place again after the back button returns me to the beginning of the first page. When I browse the featured page, it's much better because I can flip through a page at a time and return to my most recent page when I hit the back button after checking out a great Instructable. If this could be changed, it would extend my browsing time and also give members who have made instructables, every opportunity to get well deserved views. If I'm missing something obvious, please let me know.

Game: Instructables Robot, World Explorer

The Instructables Robot loves wheeling around all day at home, but it yearns to see more of the world! It's been to a couple of interesting places in the past, but that's not enough. Our challenge to you: what's the coolest place you can bring the Instructables Robot? We want you to take a picture of the Robot in these locations and post them here. Instructables at the top of a tower? Instructables around the world? You decide! If you've ever seen the movie Amelie or heard of the travelling gnome prank, think of the various places the gnomes are photographed. The Robot could take those gnomes any day.The Robot could be a print out (see hi-res Robot images), an Instructables t-shirt, a sticker, a paper model, anything. Then, you simply need to take a picture of the setting with the Robot in it.Final rule: No Photoshopping!See below for some ideas. The Robot has its bags packed and is ready to go...

Windows 7 explorer becomes unresponsive Answered

Sometimes my computer glitches and  I am not able to click on anything that has to do with the windows explorer process (desktop icons, taskbar programs, etc.)  I have tried ending the explorer.exe process, but i cant start it back up again because starting explorer.exe opens an explorer window (my computer, my docs, etc.).  The only way to fix this is by restarting.  Does anyone know how to prevent this?  The laptop I'm on is a Dell XPS L501X (i5 460M, 4GB ram (2x 2GB) NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M (1GB))  I am running Windows 7 home premium 64-bit EDIT:  This problem got weirder...Now it happens less frequently, but the problem goes away if I open Revo Uninstaller (maybe because the UAC message refreshes the explorer process?).  Does anyone know if that is the reason?

Instructable page not centering in Internet Explorer

When I login to Instructables.com the main page comes up OK with content centered on the page. There is a selection of currently featured Instructables showing ready for me to select. When I select one of the individual instructables the page comes up with no left margin at all. All the text is totally left justified. I have looked every where I can thank of to center this page and cannot make anything work to do it. I believe this has been going on for 2 or 3 days. If anyone can help with this I would be very thankful. Oh, by the way I am writing this message on the FoxFire explorer and the problem does not happen on FoxFire. The problem only happens when I use Internet Explorer 9 which is my normal internet access device. Lester

New Explore, Instructable, and Home Page

Hey Everyone! We had some down time earlier to release some awesome stuff, a new explore page, a new instructable page and a new homepage. We also did some site wide code changes to make things look more consistent and make it easier to make changes in the future. To prepare for this we've been processing all of our images (over 2 million!) to be of higher quality and to be new sizes for layouts as always, if you see any bugs post them in the forums. if you like the changes, desserts can be sent to the 82 2nd st office. Thanks!

Internet Explorer can not open this website.

This is the message I get when I try to get acess to a website such as Radio Shack.com  I am using a Dell desktop with Windows Vista Home Basic  and am stuck with Dial-up connection which runs pretty slow anyway. The display then shifts to a screen that says something like  This webpage could not be opened.  This is not a new problem.  It's been happening for months. Anybody got an explanation or way to keep this from happening?  I run Microsoft Security Essentials but it always comes up clean.  Does anyone else have this problem?  Could this be caused by a virus or spyware, or maybe a software glitch? Thanks for all replys!  LeShane

Explore the Age of Industry: Mechanicrawl 2008

The Long Now Foundation is sponsoring an event called the Mechanicrawl which takes place this weekend. In case you were wondering, the Mechanicrawl is a walking tour which explores some of the different mechanical marvels along San Francisco's North Shore (including my personal favorite, The Musee Mecanique.I know most San Francisco natives avoid the North Shore like a tourist-filled plague, but this is a great chance to see all of those things that you might not otherwise ever bother (or get) to see. And should you happen to be amongst the plague of tourists that swarm to the city this time of year, this would be a great opportunity to take a very unique (and free) walking tour.

Renewed Interest In Space, Lunar Explorations

Japan's space agency today launched its much-delayed lunar probe in the most ambitious mission to the moon since the US Apollo space flights. The Selenological and Engineering Explorer — or Selene — probe was launched on board an H-2A rocket from Tanegashima, the remote island location of the agency's space centre..............................Japan's mission comes at a time of renewed interest in the moon. China plans to send a probe, the Chang'e 1 to the moon, possibly this month. The Chang'e 1 orbiter will use stereo cameras and x-ray spectrometers to map three-dimensional images of the lunar surface and study its dust. China's official Xinhua news agency has reported that a manned probe could be launched within 15 years. Japan is also considering a manned mission by 2025.Meanwhile, Google has launched a $20m (£9.9m) competition to send a robotic mission to the moon. To claim the prize, a team of researchers will need to send a rover to the moon, make it roam for a minimum of 500 metres and send video, images and data back to Earth, all before December 31 2012.Full article hereRelated Articles:UK astronaut on moonIndia's unmanned probePlan for spaceport in SingaporeEverybody else want to go to space too..

Looking for ideas for a synesthetic exploration project!

I have a project I'm working on, the purpose of which is to create a kind of synthetic synesthesia by taking the information about different people normally interpreted by one sensory system, and transform the way in which the information is presented, such that it is being interpreted through a different sensory system. The most important thing to me is that there is some kind of legitimate scientific basis for the way in which the information is gathered and then reinterpreted. So, for instance, one iteration of this project that I've done was, using litmus papers, I determined the pH of various people's saliva. I then took photos of each individual and also scanned each strip of litmus paper; I then color tinted each photo with the color from their litmus strip, and thus, one could "see" what that person tasted like. What I'm looking for are ideas for sensory data collection. Or, really, even just data collection in general. I'm an artist by trade, and an amateur scientist by interest and inclination, so figuring out ways in which to reinterpret the data isn't something that I need as much help with. Particularly, I'm really stumped when it comes to measuring anything having to do with smell, and in specific, how to measure a given person's ability to detect smells (for instance, quantifying the extent of someone's hyperosmia). I know olfactometers and electronic noses exist, but have no idea as to how they work or how to get my hands on one w/ an art student budget. ;P I got the idea to ask around here for suggestions after stumbling across this instructable for measuring muscle sounds. Thanks for any help or advice you might be able to provide, and I hope you have a very lovely day! =D

How well will an RC radio signal transmit through an underground tunnel?

I want to take one of those overbuilt monster truck RC cars from WalMart and stick a camera and a bunch of lights on it, then drive it down drainage tunnels to see where they go. Why? I'm nuts, that's why. My question is this: how will being in an underground tunnel effect the RC transmission? In a cement tunnel it seems to me that it would have increased range because the signal would bounce down the tube without getting lost in the air or degraded by other signals, resulting in improved signal range. Is this hypothesis true? I would be thrilled if I could get 100 feet of signal range in a tunnel. Any ideas?

oh boy oh boy oh boy.... NYC Maker Faire is coming Sept. 21-22....

I am still at a loss however to explain to my wife why I want to go back since I have SEEN it already (*sigh* yes, I've told her repeatedly it is different each year).   Any suggestions about that would be appreciated.  Anyways,  are ANY of you all going to be there ?  One, or both days?  Will the Instructables team be there?    I hope I can be.....

Main photo being cropped on 'explore' pages.

The main photo of an Instructable is being cropped by a few percent at the edges on the 'explore' pages.  The images are fine when the Instructable is clicked to view it, but for myself and others who take photos to fill the whole frame it is annoying to have the edges of the 'content' chopped off.  (I always intend to take a more loosely framed photo as the title image but never seem to remember.) Is this a bug in the image handling or is it done by intent? Edit : I've just realised what's happening - It's cropping to make a square aspect ratio for the thumbnails. Looks like I'll have to compose the photo accordingly.

Scholarship robot idea: sound explorer/collector

I'm a wildlife biologist currently between jobs, so my budget for new cool gear like the iRobot Create is pretty much nil. But I have an idea for using the Create as a prototype platform for a field-usable device. Previous work has established the utility of robotics in obtaining data concerning wildlife behavior (e.g., Patricelli, G. L., J. A. C. Uy, et al. (2006). "Interactive signaling during mate choice in the Satin Bowerbird: an experimental test using robotic females." Journal of Ornithology 147(5): 12-12.) My background has included electrical engineering, computer programming, and bioacoustics. What I would be interested in trying my hand at is using the iRobot Create to set up an autonomous robot to localize sound, orient toward it, approach, and obtain sound recordings. I believe that this an achievable project in the contest timeframe. I already have microphones and amplifiers suitable for the project. I can either use three or more in a planar array to use time-of-arrival for sound localization, or use material to make each sensor directional and calculate heading from amplitude differences. In any case, the sound sensors would be used to obtain heading information for the robot. Acoustics boils down to a simple dictum: get a good microphone close to your subject. In this case, a robotic platform stands a much better chance of approaching wildlife without causing the sort of disturbance the presence of a human observer usually makes. While the Create platform itself may not be suitable for field deployment, I think that it would make a good prototype for lab testing of the concept. In that light, I will probably use a voice recorder as a lightweight recording system that will only require two actuators to have the robot operate it. There are some additional considerations that I will need to explore, such as figuring out how to determine closeness of approach. This would eventually need to be based upon calculations of whether the robot is at the boundary of far and near-fields of an acoustic source at the highest frequency of interest. That would maximize the sound amplitude at the recorder without the interference that is the defining characteristic of the near-field regime. If the prototype works well, there are further ideas that could go into a field robot system. One would be to have the robot localize a source and conduct a survey, carrying a GPS mapping system while taking sound recordings with a calibrated sound recording system. This would be useful to characterize sound propagation properties of the animal's emitted sound. As in Patricelli's work, the field system could be disguised as a conspecific, or at least a species that is likely to be considered "harmless" by the subject.
