Wifi Extender

Hello All, Im puzzled by a simple wifi aerial, i have an old pci wifi card which is slow but works perfectly fine, the only downfall is the range so i un-soldered the original antenna and soldered on some copper wire (approx 2mm thick copper) and on the end of this attached a connector and that attached to a new antenna, but that didnt work,  The signal was weaker, i know one option is to go and buy a new better wifi card but i wanted to dabble with creating a stronger wifi aerial, (in my head this would work but in practical it didn't). Why And what did i do wrong?

Extend WiFi antenna for Lenovo netbook S10 that is WiFi enabled

I'll be in a rental apt. in Barcelona and want to extend my WiFi range. Also total newbie to WiFi. Purchased a Lenovo S10 with built-in WiFi. Read Wambat7's "kitchen strainer" suggestion at:https://www.instructables.com/id/usb-wifi-antenna/Given that my S10 is WiFi enabled can I still try Wombat7's suggestion and buy an external USB wireless Network Adapter to try for extended antenna range? Will my netbook automatically 'deal' with both built-in and exernal WifFi adapters and use the one with best antenna reach? If the above is a no go because my S10 has internal WiFI is there any way to extend antenna reach for the S10's built-in wireless adapter?

Extending Servo Wire

I need to make a servo wire that extends approximately 4 feet and then retracts to a length of 18 inches or less. There is a risk of entanglement, so the less sag and less loose the wire, the better. One option would be to use coiled wire of the appropriate gauge, but a product such as this is expensive. What are some other options? One idea that I had was to build a wire spool mechanism like that of a tape measure. From what I understand, a tape measure uses a constant force spring to somehow apply a retractive force to the actual measuring tape. Can anyone provide a more clear explanation of how a tape measure retracts? Does anyone have any ideas of how to implement this into a wire spool? Other ideas on retracting a very long wire? Thanks

Extending a mobile phone's camera away from the phone by adding some longer cable?

I have a little project where I am looking to extend the mobile phone's camera a few meters away from the phone while still being able to use the phone as a viewer. I would like to use the camera and the phone because the power source is already set up, the camera and the phone mesh without trying to add a camera to a small LCD screen, and I have loads of old mobile phones and was hoping to be able to recycle one or two of them. I would like be able to place the camera of the phone a meter or two away and be able to view the video on the phone. This could be useful in looking in hard to reach places within reason. I could also maybe set up a little rig for attaching the camera to my motorbike helmet and recording without strapping the entire phone to my helmet. This could also maybe be used for making a little rear view camera for my bike by placing the phone on my handlebars and routing the camera behind me. I know they sell back up cameras, but again I am just looking to find a use for my mountain of phones. I assume I would just need to find the camera's cables and extend them, but I am also going to assume they use a ribbon cable. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way to extend the camera away with a bit of wire soldering or something along that nature. Would the mobile phones with VGA cameras use a system other than ribbon cable? Hopefully someone can wrap their head around what I am describing and help out so I can find something useful do something with a few of these outdated mobile phones!

Extend optical mouse range

Hi all, I'm wanting to make a jig for a production project requiring a sensitive optical measure of movement with a focal length of 5-10 mm. If anyone has a lens that could be perfect or other ideas I'd love to hear them. Thanks, D

Replacing switch and extending them.

I have this extension cord from panther, http://www.panther.ph/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/PSP-0211.jpg. Now, I am planning to replace its rocker switches to toggle switches and extend it because of a wooden table project. This wooden table will have its power control panel mounted on its front and the power outlet will be hidden inside the table. My idea is just to copy its wiring for the new switches once I acquire the materials needed . Here is its inside btw. http://imgur.com/xOHhg5i.  My problems are I don't know if this idea of mine will work or if it will, what kinds or specifications of toggle switches and wires I'm gonna need. Once I thought that I could just make an ordinary multiple outlet/extension cord with individual switches but I need the panther's features. So that I wouldn't have problems in breaking the appliances connected to it due to some electrical problems. I have almost 0 knowledge when it comes to electronics.

I guess im at the medium level of networking knowledge, I dont know how to program unless its HTML but I definatley know my way around a computer. My network consists of three desktops, one attached to an LCD TV as a media center, one is just a workstation and the other soon will be in the gameroom as a media center. I also have three wireless laptops connecting to my wireless router, one operational thinclent connected to my FTP server through RDP and two networked printers.  I'll attach a diagram

Extend logged in time to at least a week

If at all feasible, could you please extend the logged in timeout to be at least a week? I get the newsletter once a week and I click on links to the articles I'd like to read more. I then go back and read them only to find I have to log in and then refresh every article I want to read. I'm sure the refreshing takes up more bandwidth and memory than keeping my session in place for seven days or so. I have checked the 'keep me logged in' option but it only works for a couple of days. Thanks!

Idea for extended version of "Sun Jar"

After seeing the recent Sun Jar I'ble, I had an idea (not even concrete enought to be a Completable) for an interestingly extended version. There now exist LEDs for infrared, visible red, green, and blue, and near UV.It should be possible, with a mix of small low-voltage constant-current power supplies and pulse modulators, to construct a multiple-LED light source which roughly models what we perceive as the solar "spectrum." I don't mean formally reproducing the raw wavelength distribution, but rather the combination of intensities we see (or measure with a thermometer) in a prism- or grating-spread spectral display.Coupling such a circuit to a solar cell would allow you to build a "Sun Jar" which "collects sunlight" during the day and "releases sunlight" at night. As I said, just an idea...

How to extend a power switch on a projector? Answered

Well, I went and finally bought one of those cheap projectors off of ebay for the pourpus of replacing the lamp, I almost have it finished and at this point Im thinking about where to mount it and how to run power etc... The problem I have encountered is that it will be in a place where it will be inaccessable to me, so I was wondering  If I could extend the power switch to my "control table". I figured when I bought that it used a soldered on SPST pushbutton switch, but when I got the projector and disassembled it, it had some kind of onboard switch (which I will have to post a pic of becasue its really hard to explain) Any help would be appreciated Thanks! Oh, I almost forgot, It is so old I cannot find a remote for it, so thats not an option.

Gps Tracking Device Extended Battery

First ever post after years of lurking. Searched but couldn't quite get the right answer. I'm trying to extend the battery of my GPS Live tracker. Currently I get 3, sometimes 2 days before the battery gets so low I must recover it. I saw where advertisers are selling 10 day batteries for up to $600. Just too much for me. The first picture is a completed model being sold on the internet. So I ordered the battery, ($58) and the charger ($45). Tomorrow morning I'll go find some connectors that match the charger and that I can use as a connector on the GPS. I'm going to go through the hacked battery case. I'll rig the the wires to match the holes then fill the empty case with hot glue to hold it in place. This is my big question: There are 3 electric tabs on the GPS. I have + and -. Can I just ignore the center tab? I will then run the wires through a hole I'll drill in the Hacked battery case. To a connector-connecting to battery. Any issues? The battery has a Built-in IC chip. I am assuming that is an IC chip on the old battery removed. I appreciate any input. Thank you.

DIY Storable Tubular Extendable Member (Tape Measure Style Extendable Robot Arm)

Hello, I am on an FTC robotics team, and often robots are required to lift/reach objects. This year, a challenge was to reach up and grab onto a pullup bar; the robot then completed a pullup. One common method this year was to use a tape measure; the tape measure was unwound using a motor, remained rigid due to standout, and was then wound up, lifting the robot in the process.  I am now in the offseason and I want to improve on this design. I found that a very similar mechanism to the tape measure has been used for extendable antennas on spacecraft. I would like to create a similar mechanism. The main difference between the tape measure and the STEM mechanism is that the STEM extends a tube. The tube is rolled from a sprung piece of metal. The piece that I am looking for is a material that could be flattened, but would retain its tubular shape like on the STEM. Does anyone know of any types of pipe or tubing that could be cut lengthwise and possess this springy characteristic? Is there anyway to create a material like this? Thanks, icecats

How to make a real Bluetooth range extender?

I want a bluetooth device that connects to my phone as a standard bluetooth headset and allows any bluetooth headset to connect to it as if it were my phone. I am thinking of using it (or chaining a few of them) to create a larger area for my bluetooth headset for my phone. THANKS!? (Yes...I have seen the antenna hacks, but they don't allow me to boost the power of the signal like I need to.  And, this device should also allow chaining to get the signal out a lot further and around metal obstacles.) Even better would be the ability to connect multiple devices to the extender so that multiple people could be on the same call on their bluetooth headsets simultaneously.  (Yeah...it's getting deep in here.  But the geek in me wants what it wants.)
