Fade in fan

Hi! This might seem like an odd question but I need a fan to "fade in" for an art project I'm working on. That is I need a circuit that makes the fan spin up slowly to full revs. Is it possible to build some simple circuit that can manage this task? And if so is the case could someone please send me a plan for it? The fan is a standard CPU-fan (12V). Thanks for your support!

Banging Fan

For some reason the central heating/cooling fan is making a banging noise. I know it is the fan because when it kicks on, I start hearing a banging noise. It like bangs 4 times a second.  Does this mean I need a new fan or can it be repaired? Also is this a motor problem or a problem with the fan wheel? It sounds like hitting an air duct with your fingernails.

Antique Fan

Hi, I bought an old Hunter antique fan at a garage sale  that I am trying to make work. I should mention that I am a 65-year-old female and have never done this sort of thing before. I have removed the cage and blade.    Through another source which has stopped helping me, I was able to unlock and de-grease the oil box. I did rewire the main cord and I see that the fan does work.  Yay!!!! Now the problems start.  There is a 3-wire cord that comes out of the motor head and  snakes down to inside the base.  This cord is majorly frayed.   It is not like the 2-wire cord I fixed that plugged into the wall outlet. I need some advice on how to replace the portion of the cord that shows the fray for both esthetic and safety reasons.  It is wired inside the motor and I don't want to remove that attachment.   I have enough wiggle room with the cord to add/replace a portion and snake it down to the base. I will attach some pictures to try and clarify my ramblings.

Using a fan to drive another fan

Hi all, This may very well be a stupid question but after a quick bit of searching I cannot find an answer (which probably means it is stupid). I have been thinking about setting up a wind turbine to generate some electricity for my home. It occurred to my that it would be good if the wind turbine did not rely solely on the wind from outside so I started thinking about using another fan to blow air into the fan or fan used to create the electricity. Does anyone know if this is possible? I guess what would be ideal is if fan A was powered by the electricity produced by fan B but fan B also produced a little extra electricity that I could syphon off. This could then easily scale up to produce more power. [ fan A ] ~~~~~> [ fan B ] ~~~~~> electricity I suppose if fan A takes more energy to run than fan B can create then it won't work. Has anyone looked into this?

Supplying amperes on fan? Answered

Hey, I'm just wondering if I were to plug in two fans rated at 12V .1A to a 12V 1A power supply, would the extra .80A will overload out the fans? Or will the fans only draw what it will need? And for other simple devices like LEDs, will this apply?

PC Fan help?

Hi! Got a Dell 8600 Inspiron When I boot, the fan briefly turns twice. Begins to start, but stops abruptly. Doesn't do anything else. I think the fan needs to be replaced, but if it is faulty, why is it able to start briefly? I noticed this b/c it was getting very hot and I noticed a very very very faint beeping sound coming from around the area of the fan. Random beeping, no pattern to it.  Any advice/suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

CEILING FAN REPAIR

This could become an instructable, but these days, juggling photo files from cell phone to email to comp to ibles is so dang cumbersome..    anyway, this is how i fixed ceiling fan. fan has a rubber plate between motor and blades. apparently a bit of wiggle room for blades is a desirable thing. but that rubber plate was cracking. the fan blades had begun to hang low and drag against the light fixture below em. so i removed the lights that hang below fan. removed all 5blades,  blasted dust off rubber plate with compressed air, and used used gel superglue from loctite brand to glue cracks in rubber plate. i specifically got glue in a tube, not a bottle, since ihad to apply it upwards.  i never removed fan motor from ceiling, so, the work was overhead. the glue says its good for rubber, and so far, it has held up. the fan is reassembled, and working again.

Polarity of fan motor?

Recently I had occasion to change the small fan that cool the aluminum fins just above the exturder. Not paying too much attention to the polarity of the 12 volt supply voltage, I figured that if was turning the wrong way, I could easily change the plus and minus connection. When I fired up the controller, I thought it was turning the wrong way and I changed the polarity. It then wouldn't turn at all. Changing it back to the original polarity, it worked fine. It is normal to have the fan polarized, and if so, what is the proper direction of air flow?Alan

Wall of case fans?

Hey guys, I have been thinking up ideas all night for wind power. I've been messing around with a decent dc motor I found in a printer, but I'll have to wait till tommorow to make some kind of proper blades for it. I however, have an interesting idea. I was thinking of using just one case fan by itself to generate power (see video below). But then I got to thinking, what if I made a wall of case fans in my back yard? and wired them all up in parallel or something. I measured the output of one case fan I have here and at most I could get was 0.100v DC turning it by hand as fast as I could. I come along so many case fans and throw them out all the time, so why not re-use them?? I'm not sure winter time would be the best time to put something like that out, but I think it would work.

Laptop Fan Buzzing? Answered

Hello Everyone, Need some advice here. I have noticed a slight buzzing sound in my fancy gaming laptop's fan recently. Its only audible when the fan is on its highest speed and then you wouldn't notice it if your volume is up. I'm fairly certain the problem is that the fan is slightly off balance. Here's why: 1). I completely dismantled the laptop and cleaned it of all dust and particles, so its not clogged or impeded in any way. 2). The sound stops if you tilt the laptop approx 30 degrees in any direction. (The sound actually gets louder until the 30 degrees is reached, then it completely stops). My question is: What should I do about it? Is it really much of a problem? Do I need to replace it? If I do, my warranty literally expired 1 week 1/2 ago, is there anything I can do about that? I feel cheated by the timing personally.

Experiment on whether and when a stuck up fan will break into flame.

Let us consider a typical home electric fan, and we put some obstacle to prevent the fan propeller from turning, then we switch on the fan on the fastest speed; will the fan and when eventually break into flame because the propeller cannot rotate? Is it good idea to replace laptop's fan by fan of cooler pad ?

There are nasty fan inside of my laptop. The fan is loud and sound is nasty and works always (its such model of laptop), so I want to remove bottom of the laptop's corpus and may be top of the cooling pad and use the pad instead of internal cooler (which I will plug out). I have AMD. I think that it's may work because: fan inside laptop blows at radiator (which is on another end of copper pipe), not right at place where processors located. And I want big fan that will blow right at those part of cooling system where processors located. I'm not gonna remove copper pipe, just plug out default fan and use pad's instead so that it will blow at cooling system from the bottom. I'm gonna use pad with 220-250 mm fan. What do you think ?

Wall of PC Case Fans?

Hello guys, sorry if this is the wrong section but, I was thinking of making a DIY fan out of PC case fans to keep myself cool in the summer. I've tried a number of fans in the past, but they don't seems to be very good. I usually put them right next to an open window to draw cold air in. I was thinking of making some kind of rig like in the video below, only without the bitcoin mining computer. I got the idea from this video and from when I was messing around with the fans in my own PC. I was chancing the speed of the fan for the PCI cards and noticed that it could get really cold if ramped up a bit. ) I was thinking of using 9 identical 120mm or 140mm fans, preferably ones that can be used with a fan controller. Here is a few of the things I need help with. How will I power the whole thing? What kind of cabled will I need? Could I use a fan controller to power all 9 fans? Can I even hook up 9 fans to a fan controller? Maybe I could use 2 fan controllers or something? What brand of fans should I use? How will I attach the fans together? Cable ties like in the video? Maybe I could make a makeshift wooden stand to hold them upright.
