Censorship going too far!?

Is there a reason Instructables is deleting comments and replies without a note or considering to grow a backbon so we get answers? You recent site upgrade has offended and disappointed long standing users, now you add insult to it by deleting their comments.I call this censorship and it should not happen. In the deleted posting was nothing offensive, nothing wrong - the only thing in there highlighted the utter disappointment of the user. What comes next next? Deleting accounts of users who prefer to have an opinion that differs from the official Instructables.com viewpoint? What are you so scared of?If you do major changes you have to consider that not everyone likes them.As it looks now you have a hand full of users liking the kids look and features while the rest of the community is disappointed to say it nice.Deleting their comments in this regard won't fix the problem, it only adds to it.

I am CRUSHED.... :-(

I had finally gotten my "project" (for the gift exchange) finished, well except for some cosmetic touches to make it look nicer then it did.  I tested it for the last time, and a wire crossed and the speaker when POOF in a puff of smoke. This thing has me so depressed at not being able to finish it and get it sent that I am having troubles just getting back in and tearing it all out to replace the speaker and maybe put in a dampener resister to prevent it from happening again......I AM going to finish this one way or another......just wanted you all to know I am having to deal with a lot lately (my Mom becoming ill and maybe needing full time "residence in a facility" and being the only one left in the family willing to do anything, a whole lot has been dumped into my lap since July. But I DO intend on getting this out somehow, but Tuesday...but I am so sorry for this horribly long delay.

When Design Goes Too Far

Here's an image that's been making the rounds today. It's a bed that breaks down into four pieces that can then be interlocked with the floating bookshelves to form some sort of padded wall/bookshelf. It's just a design concept and not meant to be produced (I hope), but even so it's quite a case of a design looking for a problem. A few shelves on the wall will have a lot more storage for books and you can then store a futon or an inflatable mattress underneath. And do you really want your mattress displayed on the wall?

how far can an electromagnetic field reach?

For my project I need to know how far electromagnetic fields can reach. I am guessing its related to power and materials, but perhaps there is some kind of rough formula for calculating potential reach? By reach, I mean, how far can the magnetic field reach and attract (move) something, like metal fillings. Also, is there anyway to know how quickly a magnetic field can move something. In other words what speed will metal fillings move at when the electromagnet is switched on? Thanks all, Joel (the snow athlete)

Arduino as an ISP Programmer???? No luck so far :(

Hi, I've owned an Arduino Duemilanove for a while, and I love its functionality and all that it can do. I also like to program chips(PIC, and AVR) as it is pretty much an Arduino in super miniature form. But theres one problem, I dont own a working PIC or AVR Programmer! I looked around online and the only low-priced ones I could find(<$20USD) were Serial(I only have 1 serial port, but It's being used by my monitor, which I kind of need to see what I'm programming...). I have plenty of USB ports, but the USB programmers are over my budget. I would love to make one(I'm more of a DIY person) but I've heard from a few sources that the FT232RL and MAX232(UART<->RS232 converters)  wont work for the application of programming(but theres one on the Arduino?!?!?), so I'm out of luck there. But then I put 2 and 2 together: Why not just use my Arduino as an AVR programmer? So I went online hoping to find a shield I could buy for cheap, or at least a schematic. And I got nothing. The only thing I found close is how to program an Arduino with another Arduino, but I only want to use an Attiny13, or Attiny2313; Not the big Atmegaxxx. So now my question I present to you: How can I program an Attiny13/2313 with an Arduino, preferably(but not requiredly, anything really) with the ArduinoISP sketch included with the arduino IDE?

How far is safe to video a microwave with the door removed?

Hello, I soon wish to start making some videos of microwaving stuff like CD's  , eggs and xboxes. For these videos, ideally, ide like to not have the microwave door in, i fully know how to get the microwave to run without it, but since m videoing it, what would be a safe distance? Also, would power efficiency be cut with the removal of the door? Otherwise, if i cant microwave as usual without the door, if i was to remove half of the mesh in the microwave door (like every second row ect, not one half side) would that have any negative implications? and then, what would be a safe videoing distance from which to video the microwave? i want to make this as visible as possible, while keeping maximum power, also while not wrecking my video camera.

Has Instructables strayed too far from its origins?

Hi  So I posted a comment here today: https://www.instructables.com/id/Building-a-3D-Printer-Under-299/?ALLSTEPS see- mjreller (or see the attached pic) I have been a big fan of the site since 2008 and things have changed. I am aware that many 'bootstrap' projects are available and they probably make up the majority of the total. BUT, so many, like the one linked above have almost no information about how to actually build the item. Does this make it a bad 'ible?  In my mind, heck yes it does. As the parent of a very bright young person I am constantly looking for projects to keep his (our) mind(s) expanding and growing. I look to this site frequently for ideas and it is becoming less and less useful. Clearly by voting/not voting I have a voice in what content succeeds here.  But I feel like I am in the vast minority especially when reading the other comments for the above linked 'ible.  Being impressed with what someone makes does not qualify it as a good Instructable. I make large allowances for tech shortcomings (I know not everyone has access to laser cutters, etc etc) but the INSTRUCTION should still be there. Am I naive to expect to have a clear idea how to make every project on this site? I don't think this is too much to ask when other commenters are complaining about Standard-Metric conversions. I welcome an open discussion, and consider this an opportunity to learn how to better use the site. thanks for your time, Matt

Will removing a rear seat move the centre of gravity in a minivan too far forward? Answered

A family member frequently drives around in the van all by themselves, which I'm sure is an enormous waste of gasoline. Removing one or both of the rear seats will help reduce the weight of the vehicle and improve the efficiency a tiny bit. That said, I was wondering if doing that would cause handling issues due to the centre of gravity being farther forward. Also, winter is long and icy here, so rear traction is an issue 5 months of the year.

Device to warn two atv's if they are getting too far away from each other

I'm trying to find a way to warn one atv rider if the other rider is getting too far away.  Basically a device that you could mount on each atv that would have a red light and a green light.  The green light would be on if both riders were like say very close to each other or up to 1/4 mile away.  If the atvs would get more than 1/4 miles from each other a red light would turn on letting the riders know they are getting separated.  Thinking a low power radio transceiver that every 10 seconds or so would send out a signal that the other would pick up so the green light would stay on, if they two radios were out of range and didn't pick up a signal after 20 seconds or so the red light would come on until they got back into range then the green light would come back on. Basically a warning device to let each other know if they are getting out of range.  An example would be two atvs riding on trails following each other.  If the atv following got stuck, broke down or stopped for any reason the lead rider would be alerted that the other rider is not in range so they could stop and wait or turn around.  Anyone know a device to do this or an easy way to build one.

Automatic light switch with timer and Arduino

Greetings! I need to set up a test environment with End of Day lighting (EOD). I am a rose breeder and I read some interesting articles on the use of far-red light (740nm) followed by red light (660nm)  for a short while at EOD. The goal is to lengthen the stems of the roses by giving them EOD light in a sequence. What I need to achieve is that by dusk (EOD) the far-red goes on for 10 minutes and then off, followed by the red light for 10 minutes and then off as well utill the next evening.  I have the following hardware: Arduino's (Uno and Mega) LED's (red and far-red) Lightsensor two relays to power the LED's transformer(s) resistors etc. However: I am not a programmer. Can somebody help me with the code needed for this trial? As far as I can see it should be reasonably straightforward. Many thanks, Peter
