Fairytale Fashion

Howdy, folks. Long time instructablizer, here... first time forum poster. I recently started working at Eyebeam on a project called Fairytale Fashion. It's focusing on demonstrating how to use some techy, geeky staples and apply them to fashion. We're making clothing that transforms, changes color, responds to touch, body heat, and even the weather. The project is being run by Diana Eng. You might remember her from Project Runway or her book Fashion Geek. Every week until the end of December we'll be releasing videos documenting our experiments, providing tutorials, and showing you how you can be a champion fashion geek and make fantasy fashion a reality. We're trying to involve as many people as possible; asking for design ideas, getting feedback our work, making sure people can build off of what we make. It would be awesome if you had any input, designs you'd like to see, or ideas on cool fashions to look at and reference and posted them on our blog. Here are the first couple episodes:

Fashionable PFD?

Hi Everyone, I am a designer and product developer in Vancouver BC working on updating PFD designs. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Do you find rental PFD's bulky and awkward to wear? Do you wear your PFD, or does it sit in the bottom of the boat? Have you been yearning for a modern PFD design that fits your body? When spending the day on the water with friends, are you embarrassed to take pictures while wearing your PFD? If you are not in the position too purchase your own PFD, would you choose your boating rental company based on the PDFs available? Thanks so much! Your Vancouver Designer

No Fashion Category @ Instructables?

Why isn't there a "Fashion" category here? "Craft" doesn't really cover everything. More of a suggestion than a question I guess. Where's the suggestion box? :)for instance:https://www.instructables.com/id/How-To-Make-Removable-Ruffles-for-your-Shoes/https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Christian-Louboutin-quotPetalquot-Bag/https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Christian-Louboutin-quotPetalquot-Sandals/

Fashion from trash!

On August 27 and 28, in Nevada City, California, Haute Trash is holding the latest of what appears to have been a long history of fashion shows featuring creations made from discarded ... anything. Amazing clothing made out of garbage!  That's about as DIY as it's possible to get. I've got to go see this.  I'll take a camera and report back.

Old fashioned sweets? Answered

This will probable only apply to UK based answerers of a "certain age" When I was a kid (1960's) we could buy a nut based sweet/treat - in a cardboard box, the resembled brown wrinkled peas - they were chewy (not Toffee) and a natural nut - slightly sweet to taste Any idea of the name - it's driving me nuts.

Old Fashioned Key

I was thinking the other day about how I could make all of the gothy underclassmen even more jealous of me and my accessories, when I came up with the idea of having a giant, ornate key as my keyring. Kinda like in the secret garden, or some other old fantasy type movie/book. I couldn't find any starting points at the craft store, but I was thinking it could probably be made from wood, metal, or some type of sculpting medium. SInce it'll be a key ring and flopping around with keys in my purse, it will be rather vulnerable to dings and chips. Any ideas?

Open Software for Fashion Prototyping

This has got to be the most exciting thing to come down wearable technology pike! It's a FREE downloadable book about Arduino boards (both "standard" and LilyPad), conductive fabric, resistive thread, soft buttons, LEDs and more!! The eBook is split into three parts covering the basics of hardware, software and the use of the Arduino IDE (Integrated Development Environment) in the first part. Part two give examples of using eTextile materials and the Arduino to make first cool projects involving LEDs, Piezo speaker and, the Digital and analog zipper. The third part is dedicated to show how to write programs for the Arduino platform. This all might sound very technical for fashion/clothing designer but dont be afraid, it's easily explained and covers just what's needed for wearable electronics (and not for building an new space station).I cannot wait to get started with this eBook! Finally, all the mysteries I had to ask others to program for me, unravelled! pun intendedDownload yours today. NOW! at Open Softwear

Is the word "neat" old fashioned?

I'm about to write an English press release for my product CameraClip. English is not my first language. I would like to use the word "neat' to emphasize that the product is small, smart and cheap. Is "neat" an old fashioned word in this context? If so, what alternatives could I use? Hope to hear from you all.

Anti/Surveillance Fashion Show at Maker Faire

Constantly under the lens of the camera, fashion is a natural form in which to explore the relationship between surveillance and culture. How are we watched? How do we watch?  How do we present ourselves to the eyes of the world? I'd like to introduce a fashion show being organized for Maker Faire San Mateo, May 22&23 2010, sponsored by Noisebridge (a hackerspace in San Francisco that I am a founding member of).  We are showcasing wearables that can be used for surveillance or to thwart surveillance. Full details are here, and that page will be updated with more information and a list of participants as they are finalized. You can also email fashion@synthesize.us with specific questions.

How to make clothes move by means of a motor or spring loaded apparatus ?

I design fashion as art type clothing. I had an idea to make the clothes move or pop up/out on command to better express my "artistic vision". I just need a place to start? What kind of small motor could I use? Where could I maybe get this motor from? Or can I rig some of the clothing to be spring loaded? I hope I was clear enough.... Thanks for the help!!

Need to polish tan leather fashion boots.

I have a pair of Steve Madden (very expensive) knee length, platform fashion boots. They have never been worn, but they have been moved several times. They are made of a regular smooth leather, but have some light scratches (which look lighter than the rest of the boot). I want to polish them for resale, but don't want to have the scratches turn out dark. Please advise, M

Anybody ever been to a fashion show? I need some tips...?

A group I'm in has set goals for this year, and one of them is to host a fashion show.  We know where to host it, how to get a store to lend us clothes, how to set up the room, music etc., but we are puzzled as to what happens in a fashion show- what happens first, last etc.  Any brochures from the store?  Does an employee have to come out and comment?  If you've ever been to one, please describe it as best as possible.

Spanish fashion designer creates spray on clothing. Thoughts?

A Spanish fashion designer, with the help of the imperial college of London (I think I said that right?) has created "spray on clothes". Personally I think it's absolutely ridiculous and will never where clothes made like that, after all it's more like coating your body in silly string then wearing clothes, right? But, anyway, what are your thoughts on this? http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/09/spray-on-fabric/ (Image source: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/wp-content/gallery/spray-on-fabric/fabrican3.jpg)

Why Corsets and Basques are a Must have Fashion Accessory

Many ladies desire the kind of garments that would make them feel good about their body sizes and shapes. They will spend a lot of money on the accessories that would also enhance their appearance by making them have that different, unique look. The answer to such desires lies in corsets and basques. These are women’s elegant garments that have been worn over dresses or skirts for a long time. A Basque is a tight fitting piece of clothing, although it may not fit tightly as corsets. Various Designs These accessories are presented in a variety of designs, which make them highly unique and fashionable. They tightly fit the upper part of the body as they go down beyond the waistline and closely over the hips. They can fit any body type or size due to their flexible materials, which are also durable. Feel Satisfied You may have wanted to look beautiful and have that exquisite feeling of satisfaction on your weeding day. A unique but simple accessory will make your dreams come true. You may look no further than an online shop with stylish basques way before your wedding day. There are exact measurements for different body types as well as appropriate colours and designs that suit different women. Design in Wide Ranging Fabrics These accessories come in a wide collection of fabrics such as cotton, silk, satin and velvet and have the capacity to offer you the exact shape that will be an envy of your friends at the wedding reception. These accessories may also be worn on any other occasion. If it is a night out that you want to attend, a dinner party with your spouse or merely, an after bath dress to show off to your husband, these are the right accessories for you. Let Your Man Feel Good Once you purchase the appropriate accessories and put them on, you are surely going to have your man feel good with a beautiful, unique, sexy and elegant look. And, whether you prefer a plain accessory or a full colour accessory, the quality is just as good. Any of these will fit just appropriately whether it is worn on top of a skirt of if you prefer to dress it plainly. Availability These accessories are available in online stores and be shipped to your location after payment of the requisite purchase and shipping costs that are affordable. There are also options for refunds in case the accessories are not just the type for you. The items must however be unworn, and should be in their original packaging.

How do I tie "deck shoes" to turn them into slip ons with the laces as tassles?

Back in the "olden days" ('80's) we wore preppy deck shoes we called Top Siders ( I think this was a LL Bean brand name). We would lace the shoes, then instead of tying a bow...we would leave each end hanging out of the last eye and make a noose like tassel. This would be made with the laces tight and the shoe would be converted into a slip on shoe. I remember how they looked, but I can't remember how to make the neat tassel like noose/knot on each end of the shoe string (strings were leather). Thanks! RaZoR
