Where to find

Alright everybody, I have a project that requires aluminum rods that will fit together. Does anyone know of a place like mcmaster, in the sense that you can pick and choose your sizes and grades but with a quality that is not industrial? McMaster is just too expensive when looking at aluminum rods. Also, what grade of aluminum do all you DIYers find is the best for multipurpose use? All help is appreciated

Where to find old printers, computers, or other tech stuff to hack?

Over the summer, I'm looking to hack some old office machines for parts and pieces. So where exactly can I find old computers, monitors, or printers? I have already checked the recycling transfer center, and they had some, but they don't let people take them. (Sigh!) Is there anywhere else I can find these cheap or free?

My street find!

Alright! This is my first post here! So, while walking around First Friday last night in the Crossroads District in Downtown KC, my friend and I came upon a copier machine set out on the side of the road. Unfortunately I didn't think about getting pictures... We stopped to examine it thought "Cool!" and went on our way. Later, we came back that way, and it was gone! But in the parking lot next to where it was, we saw it by the dumpster in pieces looking as if a car ran into it =( I was able to salvage this piece and a couple others. This is the part where the paper gets sucked in from the top.

Finding a New Stylus

I have an old record player without a stylus. The player is a Sanyo JXT 6440, called the "Stereo Music System", and the playing head/cartridge thingamajig is labeled "MG-28J". It used to work perfectly, however, at some point the arm was allowed ti drop down onto the turntable, and the stylus was bent, and eventually lost. Where is the best place to look for a new (or used in good condition) stylus for an old record player? Would it be more economical to dismantle this one and pick up a $15 turntable at the Goodwill store?

where to find: casters?

Hi everyone, I need to buy four good casters for a project I am working on. I will mount them on a wood plank using screws. I need them to have decently large wheels, perhaps 4-5", and to function well even when the load per caster is around 15lbs. Can you recommend me a place to get these? I have never bought casters before, and don't know enough about them to choose from all the suppliers that Google shows me. Thank you in advance for any help : ) James

What a surprising find.

I'm brewing up a batch of cider for the holidays. Home brewing is something I used to be into and haven't done in a while, but I thought it would be fun to get back into. Way back, 8 years ago, when we moved I stored my empties in the attic. Dragging them out today I was surprised to find one of the bottles was capped. So being curious I cracked the top and low and behold it was still carbonated, after 8 years in an attic which can reach 140 degrees in the summer. As you can see from the rather blurry picture(sorry), the color is very dark, but with a nice creamy head, it was very clear, not surprising;y, the arome was strongly caramel. On the palate it was smooth and creamy like a schwarzbier. The flavor was caramel and balsamic without the vinegar (like a balsamic reduction). Discretion being the better part of valor, I spat it out and washed my mouth with Listerine. Still it was an interesting experience. Just wanted to share.

Finding Risc processors

Hi all, I've spent a great deal of time reading up on microprocessors so I can get involved with such an activity. However, I have found great difficulties in finding a high performance RISC processor. Being in the UK, I can only find one or two providers with a limited range of processors, and that isn't just RISC ones. I also get a little swamped looking at manufacturer's websites. It's very strange they all seem to boast an architecture with XYZ Mhz of max performance, but on their spec tables there is no processor with this maxed figure shown and a lot of entries /fields are empty making 99% of their processors unknown in spec. Highly annoy and useless. I'm not looking for anything special in regards to added features to the processor (I find most of it unnecessary and as a means to charge more money, apologizes for my ignorance in this;)), just a basic chip that can process a lot (thus higher Mhz) is all im after. lower power consumption are a great/big bonus for me though. If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great. I've found many processors (for example, arm cortex-a by sounds of things is perfect: Over 1ghz of performance. Only problem no one seems to be making them; to the public like us anyway. Looking for microcontrollers seems to be quite a difficult task, if anyone has resources, sites or retailer /suppliers (UK for me, but feel free to post other countries for other user's benefit) or anything that would help it would be appreciated. I dont want you to do my dirty work, just guide me in the right direction. On another subject, at least with arm processors I've read the speed rating (for example 500mhz), if you x3 it'll give the "real speed" due to that 3 phase of processing it does. making 500mhz more like <1.5ghz. of course, it isn't exactly x3, the point im making the processing performance is better due to the 3 phases. thank you for your time.

Finding that perfect brownie

Ok, I have tried and tried and I need some assistance from the Instructable community. My favorite brownies in the world are Ghirardelli's Triple Chocolate Brownie mix. It's a delicious chocolatey blend with 3 different chocolate chips inside (semisweet, milk and bittersweet/dark). The batch comes dry and you add 1/3 oil, 1/3 cup water (though I use coffee), and 1 egg for a 8x8 pan of brownies. My issue is I want to figure out how to make these from scratch. As much as I love them, I'm a scratch kind of girl and I just don't feel like I can call a recipe mine if I'm using a box mix. There's tons of brownie recipes online but none that seem similar. I figured out that the dry mix must obviously have their cocoa powder in it, but I can't find a recipe that has you add egg, oil and water to a dry mix. Many of the recipes I found have you melt one of the chocolates into your chocolate batter, rather than use cocoa powder, but I don't think Ghirardelli does that, unless I'm wrong. And if they did, how would it come as a dry mix? Others might have used powder but then they call for a lot of butter instead just a 1/3 cup of oil. Are there any brownie experts who can figure this one out for me?

Replying from Email notifications

When I am in my email, and also have an Instructable tab open, and click on the reply link to one of the replies listed, I am normally taken to the page, and I have to scroll down to find my "entry box" already open and ready for me to reply. That is ok. However, if the reply sent to me is off the first page, I have no way I can find to "page forward" There appears to be no link at the bottom enabling me to "go to the next n+ pages. This only happens when I come in directly from an email notification....it is fine if I am already in Instructables and view a forum longer then one page.

Re-categorizing Furniture 'ables by function rather than alphabetical?

I'm beginning the process of doing some pretty major remodeling projects in my home, and was looking through the Furniture category, in the hopes of finding some ideas. Maddeningly, it's arranged alphabetically by the title of the Instructable! https://www.instructables.com/sitemap/instructable...That makes zero sense, unless you are looking for an 'able whose title you already know. I mean, honestly! -WTF is a "20KRKR", and why would anyone think to click on it to find an 'able for a *rocking chair*?! ( https://www.instructables.com/sitemap/instructables/furniture/ )So I'm wondering how one could go about either re-organizing the category, or providing an alternative browsing structure based upon the actual categorical function of each piece of furniture. Taxonomically, this should not be a problem. Seating is seating, lighting is lighting, work surfaces are work surfaces, etc., and each could logically be subdivided. For example, the Lighting category could be split into Task lighting, Area lighting, multi-function lighting, and Seating could be divided into Group seating (sofas, love seats, etc.), Single seating (arm chairs, side chairs, stools, etc.), and so on. I think that this would be vastly easier to use than the current alphabetical structure. Any opinions pro or con? Any suggestions as to how to make this happen? Is there anyone at Instructables whom I could contact and propose this to?
