Instructables Flaw

I don't know about you guys, but on the right side of instructables there are pictures of other instructables. When someone posts a comment with a bunch of pictures, a lot of times you cant see a couple of them because they are blocked off by the pictures of other instructables on the right. Is there any way to fix this?

Flaw in video postings

It seems somewhat flawed that you can't publish a video in an instructable without revealing another net-identity. Not a BIG flaw, but see for instance This forum thread.

Is this solar setup flawed? Answered

I have a 12V 10W solar panel that I'd like to use to charge a smartphone and/or a battery pack (5000mAh-15000mAh). I realise it's not a large panel but smartphones aren't that greedy and my use would be moderate. I was hoping that I could just attach the panel I have to a car lighter receptacle and use a double USB plug that I already have. Is this a sensible arrangement? The advantages, to me, are that all I'd need is a $5-$10 receptacle and I'd have a very simple setup (no inverter or charge controller, well, I suppose the USB plug would be a controller, perhaps). Would this system work? Even if it did work would it be an efficient set-up? Would there be any danger of damage to smartphone or panel? Also: will I need to earth anything or are the devices I charge capable of earthing? Would I need a diode to stop charge flowing back to the panel when there was no sun? Thanks for reading, I'd really appreciate any input on these questions.

Annoying design flaw in new editor

In the new editor, the file names of images never become visible, not when you click on them, not when you hover over them. When your images are similar to each other, that makes it very hard to get them in the right order (see the screen shot - that is not the order I took them in, nor the order they were uploaded). Please, can we have the file names back?

Default star ratings are flawed

I think it is a very bad idea for an Instructable to have a default rating of any kind, much less one as high as (what I assume is) 4. I have rated some seriously flawed 'ibles with low star ratings like 1.5 stars, I have been the first to rate them, and yet they "average" something like 3.55 stars with ONLY my rating. This SERIOUSLY skews the ratings system and makes it close to worthless, as nearly all 'ibles have a rating of 3 or better... no matter how seriously flawed they made be.

Guitar Hero 3 For Wii Audio Flaw

I was meaning to post this sooner but completely forgot. Anyway, If you don't already know, Guitar Hero 3 Legends of Rock for the Wii has a disk flaw. The flaw makes the sound in mono instead of the Dobly Digital Surround Sound that is advertised on the box. Activision will replace it for free though. The way you can tell if you have a flawed version of the disk is if you look right above the Activision logo and if theres a little white star there or not. If there is one you have the new version and don't need a replacement. If not you can go here, fill out the form and then they will send you an envelope for you to put your old one in and send back and then finally you get sent a new version. I just thought I'd let you know. Good Luck!--Note-- If you send them a disk thats anything other than the old version of the Wii GH3 game they won't send anything back.

What flaws do you see with the arduino?

What flaws do you see with the arduino and its "universe" (shields, modules, knockoffs, software &c;)?Although there are some that are quite apparent, such as the bizzare pin spacing, I'm sure there are some smaller issues that kept quiet. I have nothing against the arduino, I think it's a wonderful little guy that's doing awesome things, and I'm really thankful it exists. Thoughts?

Why or why not does .9 repeating equal 1?

I already posted this as a regular question, but someone told me to make it as a burning question, so here it is: HI! I am wondering if .999...=1? I mean if 1/3=.333 and 1/3+1/3+1/3=3/3 and 3/3=1. So wouldn't .333...+.333...+.333...=1? But it actually equals .999... not 1. I googled this question and I got many different answers ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ For example...(someone wrote): I'm not really into math, but a friend brought something up to me today that really seemed very strange. (For the duration of this post, .999 will mean .9 repeating unless otherwise specified- just for the sake of ease) .999=x 10x=9.999 10x - x = 9x 9x=9 1x=1. .999 = 1. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Someone else wrote: Numbers are fake. They are a manifestation of our minds to describe something, similar to words. Just because we say "red" doesn't mean something is red. what is red? Languages and math are very similar. Math is universal...at least for our planet though. .999~ does not = 1. But what .999~ repeating represents, does in fact equal what 1 represents. No-one will ever be able to comprehend infinity, os its time to stop trying. Think of space and the universe. IT IS GROWING. how can it continue to grow with no stop? what is there to contain it? WE need something to contain it in order for us to understand it. We need a stopping point, but there is none. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Another person wrote: In your proof that .333...*3=.999... you forgot to include the fact that .3333... is NOT 1/3. 1/3 if not a number that can be turned into a decimal in any way. I thought someone might like to know this fact. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And the last person wrote: Just a pedantic point the equation for differentiation is given by lim x->0 [f(x+h)-f(x)]/h, it has the minus sign. It is after all just telling you the slope and is no different really from doing simple trig using the tan function. Here you just take a really small triangle. As to the 0.99~ thing, this is really just writing the supremum (spelling might be off) of the numbers less than 1. Just think of it as taking the smallest number 'n-word' than 0 away from 1. They are not identical for if they were we would not have a continuous number line, but rather a dashed one with lots of wholes in it. I could simply argue that 0.99~8 is just as close to 0.99~9 as 0.99~ is to 1. For those who really want to understand go and look up supremum numbers and the axioms of the real number line. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So who is correct? Do you agree that .999...=1? Or .999... does not equal 1?

Can someone help me with my fatal flaw in my spudgun design?

So i have built spudguns in the past and with every new gun i make it gets bigger and better. So i just found pressure rated 3" pvc and im going to use it for a new air chamber. Its a simple end around gun with a piloted sprinkler valve so yea the design is good. Except for one thing. I am enthusiastic enough of a spudgunner to use an air compressor to power it when im at home. but when im at a park or some open feild i bring along a bike pump to pump it up. But with each size up for the air chamber it takes longer and longer and longer to pump. Im not enthusiastic enough to buy a compressed air tank for $60. so what should i do to power it up. i dont have enough room at my house for a distance or height shot and it will take forever to use a bike pump so what should i do. PLESE HELP ME  i will try to post pics of it soon  HELP ME

I think i have flawed results and I need somebody's opinion. Answered

I have been working on a small generator and i need a dynamo to generate the electricity so I did a little experiment to find out what motor i had was most efficient at generating power so I know what I should use a in the upcoming project. On each motor which was spun at the same speed by my Dremel all the results were ordinary except for one motor which surprised me with its super high reading. Upon seeing this I thought it might be my multimeter going dead and giving me false readings i changed out my multimeter and got the same exact readings for the motor. Is this because it really can produce 120 watts or am i doing something wrong? My formula for finding watts was V*A=W the motor was producing around 8.5 amps at 14 volts. I'm pretty sure the formula is correct as well. Help would be appreciated greatly thanks.      Harry

A look at recent FireFox 3 vulnerabliities...Heads up

True to form, Billy Rios promised a more in depth look at the MSFA2008-35 vulnerability which is another protocol handler flaw in Firefox 3. As previously reported here, this was another protocol handler flaw that led to arbitrary remote command execution, and is especially dangerous since it can be deployed widely through the use of a cross-site scripting attack vector. Note, Firefox3 no longer registers the Gopher protocol handler, which is a great security decision.Site Link - ZDNet

Does the paper roll trick work on any key laptop lock?

Is this a flaw that is apparent to all laptop lock using keys or just that one model? Can I safely use my off brand Certified Data key laptop lock without worries of this flaw applying to my lock? Also, it uses a round type key with multiple drilled depression on the side.

VLC Vulnerable to Hijacking

For those who use VLC media player, I recommend reading this article. For those who don't know what VLC Media Player is, it is a widely used media player which supports many of the codecs that other common media players do not support. Source: http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,143542/article.htmlA flaw in the widely-used open-source VLC media player could allow an attacker to execute harmful code on a PC.The problem stems from a buffer overflow that can occur when the player processes subtitle files used for movies, according to a security advisory. The vulnerability existed before VLC was upgraded to version 0.8.6e in late February, but the bug appears to have escaped the last round of patches, wrote Luigi Auriemma in a note."The funny thing is that my old proof-of-concept was built just to test this specific buffer overflow, and in fact it works on the new VLC version too without modifications," Auriemma wrote.Video files can contain a link to a separate subtitle file, which VLC automatically loads when it plays the video. An attacker could use the buffer overflow flaw in VLC to execute malicious code contained in a subtitle file, and thus tamper with a PC. The flaw affects VLC players running on Windows, Mac, BSD and possibly more operating systems, Auriemma wrote. The VLC media player is part of the VideoLAN project. The player is free, and it is released under the GNU General Public License. VLC can also be used as a streaming media server for a variety of platforms. Courtesy of: http://www.searchsecurity.com.au/topics/article.asp?DocID=1237777The flaws affect VideoLAN VLC versions 0.7.0 through 0.8.6. Users can fix the issue by upgrading to VLC version 0.8.6a or by applying the patch.Another solution from Torrent Freak: For now, the only solutions are not to run any subtitle files, or to grab one of the nightly builds. The downside is, however, that these might not be as stable as the regular releases.

Warning to all Safari users.....

Pwn2Own hacker: Apple Safari is 'easy pickings'Charlie Miller, the security researcher who won last year's Pwn2Own hacker contest, is predicting that Apple's Safari browser will be the easiest target this year.In a note posted on the popular Daily Dave mailing list, Miller describes Safari as "easy pickin's" and forecasts that at least four zero-day Safari flaws will be used during the contest at CanSecWest later this month...Safari: hacked by 4 different people. Easy pickin's as usual.Android: hacked by 1 person. Not too tough but no one owns one.IE8, Firefox: Survive unscathed. The bugs to exploit equation is too hard for $5k.iPhone, Symbian: Survive due to non-executable heap.Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Chrome: I don't know enough to say anything intelligent. That said, they're probably hard/obscure and so survive.Last year, Miller exploited a Safari flaw to hijack a fully patched MacBook Pro machine. He is also known for launching successful attacks against Apple's iPhone and Google's Android platform.Safari predicted to be the easiest target this year...

Partial solution to trash in water? Maybe.

Hey everyone, I had a couple of ideas for getting trash out of our storm drains/oceans/streams/rivers, the first one, this one has a couple of flaws: This is a very basic idea to skimming trash off the surface of water, a net. Preferably one with small holes to limit the amount of trash flowing out of it with the water. BUT, fatal flaw: It can also catch wildlife in it, and I'm still trying to figure out how to work around this. Any suggestions? Second, a filter of sorts for storm drains/streams: Imagine a metal mesh wedge, kind of like a snowplow wedge, that would go in front of drains and such (I'm thinking more for the type of streams and drains that have those big tunnels going under roads and sidewalks and emerge on the other side). The wedge could allow water to flow through, but direct trash off to the sides to collection tanks. I'll try to illustrate it below.                       - - - - - - - - <0 (the lines would be the stream, then the wedge, then the drain/tunnel opening. I couldn't do the tanks...) I'm eager for any suggestions/tips, improvements, and thoughts on these!

Stolen Projects

What is one to do if they start a collaboration and someone else steals it out from under them and publishes it as their own Instructable? The Colaboration system is too flawed and I will never consider working on projects publicly again. They should be hidden from view of all but members of the collaboration itself. I had a project titled USB UPS and opened it for collaboration. A user (neelandan) saw it, copied the idea, threw together amateurish circuits and published the parts to it as his own. I had planned on publishing a very professional step-by-step for a usable project. Now the idea is moot since it's already been published.

I know there are sites and images that show your IP Address, browser, OS, possible location, etc. Could you have some way of writing this found information into a database, or would that be too much of a security flaw? I'm not talking about tracert commands, IP locators, etc. EDIT: Sorry if i wasn't clear enough for anyone, I was meaning something like a PHP, HTML or Java code that logs the visitors IP Address (And if possible, some other miscellaneous information) on a .txt file or something similar.

If I were to do this of course itd have to be sealed water tight so nothing leaks, but is there anything else that might need to occur? Per say would I have to add a dye to the mineral oil to get a good luminosity effect or would it be shining bright without it? If you could throw me some things that might be flawed in this idea or advice I would appreciate it lots!

SF's Hybrid Buses are Easy to Shut Off

This is an odd one! Apparently, kids have been playing around with the hybrid buses as they roll along -- by turning them off. The off switch is apparently just under a unlocked panel on the side of the bus."When that happens, the drivers can't accelerate, they lose radio contact with dispatchers and the interior lights on the buses go out. The power loss does not affect the brakes."They say that they're working on locking the compartments -- which seems like a good start -- as well as increasing patrol among the areas, as other attacks were common.Chronicle via Gizmondo

Some Featured Instructables are not worthy of Featuring

Instructables is great. I frequently view Featured entries. However, I have reviewed the criteria in a number of staff posts regarding what gets a members Instructable featured, I think the idea is good but the implementation is flawed. Some of the featured Instructables might meet those criteria but the Instructable itself may not be worthy, one recently had to be removed by staff for plagiarism after it was featured! The breech of Instructables Guidlines was clearly indicated in comments prior to the featuring. Instructables, please remember that just because an Instructable gets lots of views or comments, these may be for all the wrong reasons and each Featured Instructable and its comments should be reviewed before featuring. Thanks, and I really do think Instructables makes the world a better place :-)

Your thoughts on an inkjet hack

I've been mulling around a cheap (as in free) way to make a 3d printer, or laser engraver. I'm looking for flaws in this plan: 1)Find an inkjet printer thrown away because new ink would cost almost as much as a new printer. 2)Mod the paper feed motor assembly so that the it moves the top half of the printer along a rail instead of moving paper. 3)Short out the pins to ink colors other than black to give a false "full ink" value. 4)Attach a power transistor to a cutting laser circuit, and the black ink pins. The idea is that if I sent a black and white image to the printer, this could perforate or even cut a suitable material. I already have a few areas I'm concerned with, but I'd like a second or third opinion on possible trouble areas.

Update - Circuit problem: Can anyone figure out what may be causing this project to only work half way?

Ok, I have a recently built prototype of a circuit I was going to publish, but it is not working exactly as planned. It is not that it is not working at all, but it is acting strangely. What is happening: pairs are blinking alternately, when they should be blinking in sequence. Can anyone see a fundimental flaw in my drawing, or is it a possible soldering error. Opinions and insights welcome. PS: the included video is the first one I have even edited too (I forgot that the camera picked up sounds, and I had grunted, and verbally expressed surprise and it sounded inappropriate, so I edited it out.)PPS: I believe I have to declare FAILure on this one, at least for now. Sorry....

barefoot shoes?

Hello everyone. I've recently gotten into the benefits of going barefoot without actually leaving the house shoeless. When I run, I wear stupid-looking vibram five fingers, and I've got a pair of Vivo Barefoots by Terra Plana that were too expensive. I'm sick of looking for new shoes that meet the specifications of being classified as "barefoot shoes" because they either way to expensive or just look stupid. The solution? Does anyone know anything about replacing the soles of shoes? I figured I could just take some shoes I've already got or get some new ones and replace the anatomically flawed soles with a sturdy but flexible sole about 3 or 4mm thick throughout. But I have absolutely no idea how this would be done.
