Seeing as knex is light, strong and flexible, and most importantly, using rods, I beleive it would be feesable to build a Knex 'glider'. After seeing how gliders are made, it could be possible to build a lightweight spacframe wing out of knex, and make it fly using clingfilm as its 'skin'. An extra boost of gliding power would come from a clingfilm propeller, powered by the very fast and smal, solar motor. Do you think it is possible to make something like this glide 10 metres? Ideas welcome.

First posted here. Last Friday, I drove up to Maryland to see UMD's Gamera II human-powered quadrotor. They are currently pursuing the Sikorsky Prize, established in 1980. Here's the team testing a new control system. http://youtu.be/3B2of4V35d0 (sorry, the embed function isn't working) During this test, Gamera II flew for approximately 65 seconds, unofficially tying the endurance record that the team previously set. This flight time, plus the ability to remain within a specific boundary, satisfies two requirements of the Sikorsky Prize. Because the rotors are so close to the ground, the helicopter is benefiting from a cushioning effect of the air between the rotor blades and the ground. This effect will diminish exponentially when the team attempts sustained flight at the required 3 meters. The helicopter transfers the pilot's pedal power by unspooling cable from pulleys, mounted on the shafts of each of the four rotors. Flight time is limited by the pilot's stamina and the amount of cable stored in each pulley. The rotors are constructed of carbon fiber, balsa, and foam, and are covered in a plastic film. All in all, it was a cool experience. I've never seen so much carbon fiber in my life! I look forward to seeing the team win the Prize.

If you download the most recent version of Google Earth and press Ctrl+Alt+A it will open up a flight simulator. You can select from two different planes and take off from several locations including San Francisco, Switzerland, and the Himalayas. You can also start your flight at a specific location if you go there in Google Earth outside of the flight simulator, and then select the "start at current view" button which is above the airport selection box. The controls can be found by going to help and then clicking on keyboard shortcuts. It's a lot of fun and has pretty good resolution. The pics are of the Himalayas. The start-up screen with the options, Switzerland, New Zealand, and upside down over Washington D.C.

I wanted to know if there are any flight controllers that have separate sensors. I want to use 2 either quad, hex or octo flight controllers with one setup as + and one setup as X to make an octocopter, duodecacopter or hexadecacopter ( 8, 12 and 16 blades respectively ). I want to have a a 6 or 9 DOF IMU connected to 2 separate controllers for larger multicopters. Either that or would anyone know how one might go about designing an arduino controller using either a pwm shield or a TLC5940. Thanks in advance

Umm... this was VERY WIERD! so here i am, sitting at my mother's computer, and i got bored. so, i picked up my handmade slingshot that i made from 2 pencils, rubber bands, and packaging tape. i then made a paper bullet and loaded it on my slingshot, and you will NEVER guess what i saw. My ammo's path CURVED!!! AND THERE WAS NO BREEZE WHATSOEVER! now THAT IS FREAKY!

I just had a great Idea last night. Okay, I think we've all seen those $250,000 homemade flight simulators built by people with just a wee bit too much time on their hands (like anyone who goes on instructables). One of the main reasons these are expensive, other than the computer themselves, is the fact that there are multiple LCD screens surrounding the pilot. These things cost a few pretty pennies, so this is where my idea comes in. The first thing you would need to do, would be to arrange some semi-opaque plastic panels where you would usually have the LCD displays. They need to be opaque enough that you can't see through them, but clear enough to let a good bit of light through. In other words, they need to be translucent, not transparent. The second thing would be computer software. It needs to be able to totally invert your desktop display. You could do this with hardware, but it would be a waste of time and materials. Connected to your computer would be a digital projector, which is where all of the magic of this project comes together. You run the projector through a prism (what kind, anyone?), to slightly warp the projected image. You need this warpage (is that a word?), to counteract the different angles of the plastic panels. The projector is set up in front of the "cockpit," projecting its inverted, warped image at it. You can see the images on the inside, because you chose the correct opacity, right? The hope behind this idea, is that it is much cheaper to have 1 digital projector, than it is to have multiple LCDs. Thanks! MDJ

And we're off!At 3:30 this morning I began making the WOD's [waffles of departure] and gathered my friends. This was it, I was having my goodbye breakfast. We sat around a giant LED display that was playing tetris on autopilot like we were at a sports bar and called the AI engine out on it's bad plays. Choice is the name of the game in AI, how do you make the optimal choices with limited knowledge about the present and doubt about the future?I drank my cocoa considering the choices I've made to hit the skies and shoot a documentary on hackerspaces, and it filled me with exhilaration. What could be more critical than doing something that gives you the energy to do the thing you want to be doing? There has to be this ignition point to push the chooser into action, creating this snowball of awesome gathering steam as it goes downhill. Rather than chilling with Sysiphus on his uphill downhill journey. Feeling energized, feeling pumped, I called my friends around me and we ate to good health and poured generous libations of yogurt smoothie [Spilled the contents of the blender on the floor].

Hey lads, After research I found that most of Quadcopter Projects use Multiwii as a flight controller. I would like to ask some things. 1) Multiwii is used ONLY for RC control or you can control your Multicopter using a PC/Mobile through Wi/fi local network ? 2) Can you have Arduino Mini / Arduino nano work as a flight controller and work like Multiwii ? 3) Does multiwii have prospects of adding some random sensors on the board like cameras, sensors for object avoidance etc? Looking forward of your replies in order to conclude about what board I will use for the flight controller so i can start ordering the parts of hardware i need and start building my project. Cheers

All of us have seen humans fly in those triangle shaped gliders. How about creating wings that will do the job? Understood that it requires more than wind to propel it so flapping power could be harnessed. I am making a quadcopter and I am in some confusion. I am planing to get a KKv3 Flight Control Board from Hobby King. The question is, if I get the board then what is the need of getting a seperate IMU6050 as I have seen in some projects that people have used the 6050 sensor along with the Flight Control Board. Is it necessary to use that? As the flight control already have sensors on them. Also, does the flight control board gets connected to the arduino? and if so then how?

I have a little airhogs quadcopter. A motor had died in it, so it doesn't fly anymore. I kinda got the idea to connect ESCs to the motor output of the quad's circuit board. Would those motor outputs be able to drive the PWM input of the ESC, allowing the board to basically drive larger motors?

I was thinking about building a flying car that would have most wingspan hidden under the car (pops out when activated) and the doors would be the tips. (What used to be the back doors would roll over van-style, and the back would otherwise be covered by sheet metal) In the back, there would be two vertical rudders and the spoiler would be cut into flaps for horizontal rudders. The thing would overall be powered by two helicopter jet engines. Once the flight system is activated, the gear shift (auto trans) would turn into the throttle, and the gas/brake pedals would turn into the rudder pedals. The idea is to make a flying car that still (when wings are stowed and trunk cover is closed) looks like a normal car. The question: is this possible?

Ok, so I have another idea that will most likely never get anywhere due to my lack of funds/it not being possible. What if I made a magnetic track somewhat like a maglev and had a robotic pegasus with electromagnets in its feet. It would also be an ornithopter to get it farther than a few inches off the ground. I would have the magnetic track to have it hover a few inches off the ground for about a minute before and after takeoff to make it less likely to crash on landing and give a minute to text the mayor to not worry about any upcoming pegasus sightings above or around town before taking off. What kind of horsepower engine would I need to power the wings enough to get sufficient lift (at least 15-20 feet)? And would the electromagnet buffer before landing be significant enough to at least lessen the impact so it doesn't maim/kill you if you crash? The electromagnets don't seem to me like they would work, but it would still be fun just to hover it to show it off without flying up 20-30 feet and worry about falling. Also, would it make it too heavy to fly if I put in an extra motor to make it walk/run so it doesn't have to be flying to move? I don't really expect this to be within my budget, but it would still be cool.

I have currently started building a 3 axis rotating Flight simulation rig that can simulated any 3D motion with a pilot inside the main cabin in control. I know the project needs a lot of disciplines working together (Steel design-mechanics-electrical-electronics-control-programming) So I assembled a team of engineers who got interested in the idea but we are not all highly experienced and the issue is new to all of us. So far we managed to design the rig it self as in steel design area. when we started moving along to the next phase which is the mechanical parts and joints we faced a lot of issues regarding the weight and balance of the rigs. The attached image is for a flight simulator done by a company in Russia. We have great ideas for improving that design and building our own non expensive simulator. I didn't post our full design model done in solid works cause it's not yet perfected. All I asking is that , if there is any one out there willing to help us share the knowledge or has a bit of experience in the subject, or wants to join our collaborate work, please don't hesitate to contacts us. I don't know the forum rules so I won't post my contact information here, but please feel free to discuss the subject with us on the forum, so we might benefit all together from this experience.

Two 17 year old Canadian Grade 12 students sent a Lego man into space and captured the entire 97 minute flight on video. The helium filled balloon used to send the Lego man (with Canadian Flag in hand) to space reached 24 kilometers above sea level. (almost 15 miles). All i have straightening the current are 8 cups, wide end facing the fan. The end is cut out to let the air flow and all the cups are pointed slightly inward to the stand holding my design.

I'm looking for hard data on the relationship between typical airspeed / stall speed, glide angle, and wing loading of large gliding/flying mammals like the colugo, japanese giant flying squirrel, and flying foxes. At first glance, Google turns up these facts with minimal digging. The catch is that the data are provided for different individuals, which is almost useless for my purposes. Could someone point me toward a source that has all three pieces of information for the same individual, and preferably lists them for several individuals? Better still, is there an existing paper comparing the relationship between these numbers across unrelated species?

So I've noticed that lots of airplanes go directly over my house and they usually fly in the same general area and direction. Therefore I assume they all go to the same airport. How can I find out which airport they go to based on the direction of the planes.

I know I will not be able to completely rely on solar power to power the blades of my quadcopter but I would like to extend the flight time as much as possible. I was looking at this url and started getting interested in trying to create a small panel array on the arms of my quadcopter to help replace some of the power in the battery (trickle) while using the battery for flight. Doug Paradis had some helpful insight to the OP's question but some of it went over my head. That's what lead me to ask my own question to make sure I'm talking about quadcopters instead. So currently I have a light weight POS starter quadcopter that has the following battery being used... - FB752540 - 136 Li-Po - 500mAh 3.7v - 4K07 1.9Wh I have some internal space to mount small items but I would try to keep the weight down as much as possible. I was hoping to start my own DIY project to learn more about solar power and the entire process. I'm guessing I would need at least one solar panel (small), something to convert the power, and some type of regulator to trickle the power into the battery. Any ideas as to how I would do this? For a while i've been studying, designing, and building hang gliders. To my great disapointment however, none of them have even glided. I am starting to think there are more things to consider than just center of gravity, balance, and the over all "lightness" of the craft. Are there more things i should consider? I have also pondered upon the idea to make a Ultralight Helicopter, or somthing along those lines. What are some things i need to consider beond what i've already mentioned?

The Martin Jetpack made its first public flight while at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2008 on Tuesday. The actual flight lasted seconds and was confined to a few feet off the ground, with handlers gripping the device even as 16-year-old Harrison Martin manipulated the controls. The Martin Jetpack team is scheduled to conclude Thursday's air show with another flight at the mouth of AeroShell Square. More air show flights may take place later in the week as well.Today this jetpack was demonstrated at EAA AirVenture. It seems like the closest thing yet to one that is actually marketable: it has flown a demonstration flight in public, and a CNN reporter was able to handle it after minimal training. Rather than a finicky rocket that burns hydrogen peroxide, it uses a gasoline V-4. I recently acquired a curio cabinet, it's tall and very wide at the bottom, it has a double door in the front that has a mesh like wire screen, then panels of glass in front that can be taken out. It would be good to hold a budgie or some finches...but I don't know what kind of wood it is, and it is stained wood, so I'm not sure how good of a cage it would be, safety wise. also, with it having three completely closed sides, top and bottom, I worry about air circulation. It would be a good sized cage, and aesthetically pleasing for me, but I do not want to in any way put my birds in danger. So, I want others opinions. Thanks in advance :)
