Foam Mascots

Hi, I'm researching ways to make a foam mascot. My main problem right now is trying to find places that sell large pieces of foam, like upholstery foam or some kind of polyfoam. I've been looking through a few cosplay resources but haven't really found any good ones that deal with foam. Does anybody have any experience with this?

Costume foam

I am make a cosplay costume and it's VERY large and it requires a foam I have been looking all over trying to find anything about it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NsQLq7EMkk At the 3 minute mark it shows this man making a Halo Elite costume leg, as you might have noticed the foam is ridged but flexible, also it's large. Where can I buy foam like that? I am assuming I can't buy it in such a massive size and that I would have to glue layers of it together, but if you know where I could buy it in a massive size that would be great too.  Final part what would be the best way to cut the foam it looks like that man is using a turkey carver any other ways? Thanks to all those that can help me!

Lost Foam?

Hi guys, I've been messing about with lost foam aluminium casting here in the UK. I've tried packing expanded polystyrene, and Jablite but they seem really difficult to get a good finish on the foam patterns. I want to be able to machine them, or use them in a basic foam lathe. I know that in the States they have a denser finer grained insulation material (blue and pink in colour). These both seem to be better for obtaining surface finish. I've tried to Google the stuff over here but it seems to be silly prices. Does anyone have any links to UK sites that sell a similar product? I was wondering if the harder stuff that you saw up and stick between the rafters for loft conversions would work as this seems a much denser fine grain foam to me. Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

No one ever thought to take in to account that more than one cross section could fit on one piece of foam....The section below was the most funny - my immediate reaction to putting it on was a Squid! And look at all that foam in/on the truck! Here's More Info

Flexible Urethane Foams

So I was looking for a way to make a new seat cushion for my car (driver's seat is starting to decompose). I was looking for a memory foam or some other flexible pour-able foam.I came across this: http://www.smooth-on.com/foams.aspI also contacted smooth-on for advice on what density foam I would need for a seat cushion and bolster (from inspection - the factory seat cushion was made from a pour-able foam cast in a mold). In any case -- just passing this info along. Not sure if anyone will need or use this - but I keep a list of suppliers just in case someone I know is looking to do something ;) If anyone else knows of another supplier -- let me know. I probably won't go this route ($100+ for 1 seat cushion is a bit steep) but it may be an option :P

working with closed cell foam

I am making a clown prop. I have a pair of dry wall stilts that I have attatched closed cell foam to and carved into the shape of bare feet. It was my entent to coat the foam with liquid latex for durability. The foam when shaped and sanded left undesirable open pores, I next filled the pores with flexable latex caulk and then started coating with the liquid latx. I am not happy with the results I am getting, the foam is still to bumpy and the added weight of the caulk may be a problem. I am contemplating starting over with another product. I know that foam board used in the housing industry would be easer to sand smooth, and is there a differant coating that would be easer to apply. Thanks Rick "Locco"

sheet foam shock absorber

Im making a trailer for a longboard (skateboard) with a speaker setup on it weighing around 20kg, the speaker im using for it is a fairly durable plastic mobile DJ style speaker but even so i'll be pulling it around over potentially rough tarmac/asphalt surfaces on a trailer made from skateboard parts so could a couple of small sections of foam sheet sandwiched between skateboard truck baseplates and the deck offer adequate shock absorption? i have squishy 1.5cm thick yoga mat foam or firmer 1cm thick sound proofing foam to choose from...

Where to get latex foam

This is sort of a follow up of my past question (https://www.instructables.com/answers/Good-foam-to-make-swords-out-of-nerf-sword-style/). I think I know what kind of foam I need: latex foam. Now I need to know where to get it, though. Anyone know? Home depot? Michaels? Amazon? Some specialty store online?

Foam Board/Cardboard Shoes

Hey, I was walking past my little sister watching PBS Kids and on one of the shows this girl was trying to make her own shoes. Out of cardboard. Lightbulb. The only reason that they didn't work is because they got waterlogged. I am thinking that with good enough sealing and strong enough glue, useable shoes made from cardboard are a possibility! The only problem is that I don't have foamboard or time to spare or a working camera at the moment. If anyone could carry this idea further than me, have at it!

FSR - Conductive foam readings

Hello! I am making a prototype of a force sensitive resistor, and i am using, to old 97%kobber coins, metal sheet and a tiny piece of conductive foam that i got from a tv-repair shop. The setup is not very good, but its a start, and i am planning the next move for better results... Now... I want some decent understanding of how the readings work, and why I get these results.. First test, are written with black, and and as you can see it, has the same amount of space between 0-1kg and 1-2kg, but 2-3 and 3-4 changes to a very small space? Why is that? Second question is, that i have used the x10, to read larger forces. 0-2,5kg and 2,5-5kg has same amount of space. Will the space decrease too, when getting further up the scale too?  - I know the conductive foam has its limits too, but just to be clear of my readings. Thanks in advance! I hope you can see the readings on the picture..!

is there any way to harden floral foam? Answered

I am making some molds and stuff from floral foam, and I wan't to know if there is a way to harden it and make it heavy.  Some of the things I'm making will have to take handling and painting without chipping, breaking, or crushing.  I use floral foam because it's easy to use, so I can make models in the first place.  I'm not looking for another medium, but how to change it once the model is made.  Also, I cannot use anything expensive or that must be bought online.  Preferrably something like paper-mache, but that will not stick out from small crevices in the model.

Make your own "Memory Foam"?

Can we make our own "memory foam"? I'd like to buy "memory foam" in a spray can - but I don't think that product is available. I was hoping to find something like "tempurpedic" in a spray can.    I'd like to replicate the really soft top layer as seen in those mattresses. The "great stuff" foam spray cans come to mind.  However, the end result of those is not a flexible soft foam. Would like to fabricate my own custom foam inserts with the material.  Any ideas about making or sourcing materials? Thanks!

Removing paint from eva foam?

This is aimed mainly at cosplayers and prop makers intimately familiar with working with eva foam. my project is not however for cosplay or prop making, I am just borrowing the same methods you use to make my project. The question is, Is there an effective way to remove paint from eva foam? Specifically, I used eva foam floor mats and plaid fx paints. I finished painting and I realized I had done an awful job (first time working with eva foam). I am on a limited budget and cannot afford to do the whole project from scratch. so I was hoping to find an effective way to remove the paint without damaging the foam underneath, that way I can redo the paint job after extensive practice on scrap pieces. I had thought sanding would work, but when I tried on a scrap piece it tore and roughed up the eva surface underneath. Any help would be so greatly appreciated!

How do you make foam?

I'm trying to figure out how to make a surfboard without sanding down a foam blank, because blanks are expensive and I'd much rather pour something into a mold shaped like a surfboard. I don't want to have to buy the kits to pour foam because they're also pretty expensive for the scale that I'm talking about. I guess what I'm really asking is how do you make the two liquids that are in the kits to pour your own foam?

Easy spray/liquid *open cell* foam?

Hi all - new here  :)  I was trying to think of where I could ask this and I immediately thought of instructables.  Does anyone have any ideas where I could find a spray or liquid *open cell* foam?  It's easy to find cans of spray closed-cell foam these days, but I've never seen one for open cell foam.  I've done a lot of searching, and the only open foam cell solutions I find tend to be giant expensive things for insulating houses in bulk, nothing for small scale applications.  I'm looking to fill a bundle of relatively fine tubes (diameter TBD), which I want to act as a sponge on the inside, resisting allowing the liquid inside to drain out while still allowing for gas migration.  Hence closed cell is not an option.  Polyurethane is probably fine, although other materials may well be fine as well. Any ideas?

Aluminum Foam: A new age material for people

So i thought i'd start a thread on Metal foams. For those of you that don't know what it is i offer the following links: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_foam http://www.metalfoam.net/ Looking through the forums, I figured this could be something pertinent to a DIYer's interest, since metal foams, specifically Aluminum foam, is strong, light, and relatively cheap. The fact that it marries with advanced composite materials science is kind of an added secondary bonus. I'm personally interested in this sort of stuff because i want to make an ultralight aircraft and this stuff could be used to accomplish that... but that's sort of something that's tangental to most that'd find info on Foamed Aluminum interesting.

cant get my foam cutter to work.

Ok im building a foam cutter, kind of following the instructions from https://www.instructables.com/id/EK8Q92824BEP286S6S/aaand it doesent work. i have a 10v 5 w transformer attached to a metal frame that holds the wires. and the transformer is attached to this stainless steal wire. i was thinking that maybe because i have it attached to a metal frame it sucks all the current but technically shouldent it try to "find" the thinnest place to short circuit and heat up? When I touch the wires to the frame it sparks up, so there is a current going through. And also if I just hold a piece of wire on my hands and connect it to the transformer, it doesn’t heat up either.sorry no pics, i might have some in a couple of days.helps! or suggestions as to what the reason might be for it not working. i am trying to build model for school, alas i think the foam cutter itself is more of a project then what im building

PH BALANCED NO-RINSE FOAMING SOAP ANYONE??

HI. My mom is bed ridden and we have to give her baths in bed. We have tried several different foaming no-rinse soaps and have found on that works the best: Medline Remedy 4-in-1 Body Cleanser. It is good in so many ways, pH Balanced, Non-allergenic, leaves her skin soft, smells great...nice sort of mango-vanilla smell. Problem is, it's $10 + per bottle, depending on where we get it. Here is the product description: Remedy 4-in-1 Body Cleanser cleanses, moisturizes, provides mild protection against transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and nourishes skin in one step. Helps reduce odor. Optimizes shelf space and nursing time. Ready-to-use, no-rinse foam stays in place to prevent product spills, waste and patient discomfort. One bottle contains over 340 pumps of foam.Harsh soaps and surfactants strip skin of moisture and contribute to TEWL. Remedy 4-in-1 Cleansers have a phospholipid base that binds both water and nutrients to gently clean and condition the skin. Remedy cleansers contain ingredients derived from natural and organic oils that mimic the body's natural lipids. Remedy cleansers can also be used during showers in place of soaps. The phospholipids will gently cleanse the skin without stripping it from its natural oils.Olivamine is a blend of antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins and methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). These ingredients are all known to play a vital role in basic cellular construction and protection. Olivamine contains antioxidants like hydroxytyrosol, the most potent antioxidant known today (derived from olives). It also contains amino acids like L-proline, L-cysteine and glycine - three of the main building blocks of collagen. These components are also treated with photoacoustic resonance to help minimize the tendency for inflammation, and to ensure they can be rapidly accepted by the skin.No-rinse foam for head-to-toe cleansing and conditioning. Indicated for hair, body, perineal and peristomal areas.Remedy is a trademark of Medline Industries, Inc. UPC is: 0 80196 30616 2 CAN ANYONE COME UP WITH A LESS EXPENSIVE, HOME-MADE OPTION TO THIS?
