Protein Folding - The Game!

Human VS Computers - an algorithmic competitionScience and technology have been mimicking nature for as long as human beings have been tinkering. Computer scientists have developed neural networks and genetic programming techniques to try to approximate the computational methods of nature. But here's something new:http://fold.itFold it is a game that takes advantage of unique human perspectives in problem solving and also the innate competitive drive to solve the insanely difficult problem of protein folding."Since proteins are part of so many diseases, they can also be part of the cure. Over the summer, we will add new functionality to the game to allow users to design brand new proteins that could help prevent or treat important diseases."-I think this is interesting, have you guy's tried this. I can't wait to see how we (as humans) pan out.BG

folding basket panniers

Anyway of making folding panniers for a bicycle like the one pictured? (Panniers are saddlebags for those of you who might not know) The material to make it out of would preferably be the metal-basket thingy, but if someone wants to try their hand at a wooden one or something else, that'd be cool to see :) I'm currently limited on resources and funds, but when I can I plan at trying my hand at the same project, so lets compare the results then! Folding coffee table?

Hi instructable community. I am currently graduating, and I own a 484sq. feet (45m^2) apartment. I have the basics and am quite grateful for what I have. however, I belive that a coffee table is almost a necessity. The problem is that if the table isn't wide enough, it won't be of much use, and if it's too wide, it will occupy too much space and will be in the way. That's (hopefully) where you brilliant minded people come in. I was thinking about a folding coffee table that will be thin, and when I have company over, I pull on it or something and it widens up so it can comfortably hold a few glasses and maybe a book or too. I have added a few images of the area that the table will go. The couch is 2m in length (6.56167979 feet) so you can get a generall image of the room. The couch is on a slight angle, so the small plant can fit behind it (it's on a chair so it can get sunlight),  so I can move the couch around a little for a bit more room. Please keep in mind that I do not have many tools, but I know how to work with raw materials, It will just take a little more time (instead of an electrical saw, I have a hand saw. Same job, takes longer). Also I don't have alot of spare money and I can't find "special" items (for example, ball bearings, and pivot and swirlly stuff are out of the picture). I know it sounds quite bizzare but I would like some help. It doesn't HAVE to be a foldable table, but I would prefer it to be, because the couch is also a bed, so if someone comes over for a couple days, I need to be able to "hide" the table to open up some space.  Worst case scenario, I'll make a small(ish) chest that will double as the table. Thank you for your time reading this message. I will be glad to hear from any of you!

How could I make a rigid USB keyboard fold in half?

Digital Conversion of Folding Camera?

Ever since i saw the 'ible on converting a land camera to take 35 mm film, I figured there had to be a way to take this even further. I'm even thinking the first baby step shouldn't be too hard- simply mounting a digital camera to the frame. Now, it would be a little more complex than this- taking the lcd screen off of the base, and putting it on the back of the camera, mounting the actual machinery of the camera where the original lens was, and perhaps even mounting buttons (or on some digital cameras, the wheels for 'scene selection' on the base of the land camera. The only problem I can find with this simple conversion is the fact that it seems most digital cameras use micro ribbons now, which would be (as far as I can tell) incredibly hard to splice and extend (which would be necessary to get the lcd screen, and other components mounted on the frame of the land camera). Does anyone have any ideas for this, or are is my goal too lofty? THanks.

When Design Goes Too Far

Here's an image that's been making the rounds today. It's a bed that breaks down into four pieces that can then be interlocked with the floating bookshelves to form some sort of padded wall/bookshelf. It's just a design concept and not meant to be produced (I hope), but even so it's quite a case of a design looking for a problem. A few shelves on the wall will have a lot more storage for books and you can then store a futon or an inflatable mattress underneath. And do you really want your mattress displayed on the wall?

Folding Bike Wheel Invented

Traveling with bikes can made easier with couplings and taking it apart, but the wheel has always been a solid item that has to be worked around. This might not be true in the future with this new folding wheel that is made up of six segments. This design by Duncan Fitzsimmons is being looked at by major manufacturers, or so he says, but no matter what it will take a while to come to market and likely cost more than all of my bikes combined. I can only hope that these eventually do some out and the economy of scale makes them only mildly ridiculous in price. link

Slimmest Repeating Folding Gun

Alright I've always wanted to make a folding gun that worked and looked decently. However, it would probably have been ignored if it didn't bring anything new to the table. I wanted to give this one a horizontal magazine but then there wouldn't have been enough room for other stuff like the handle. I said screw that and just went with a normal magazine. So far this is the slimmest design for a folding gun that repeats. A smaller one could be made but I'm starting off simple before playing the nanogun game. A nice bonus is that it doesn't have any blue rods sticking out so it is actually possible to fit it in your pocket if you're wearing big enough pants. It fires. Decently depending. Has a 4 round oodammo magazine. I don't really care for the handle but it works. The way the bands are set up, it doesn't require a lock though it doesn't automatically unfold either. Just flip out the stock and it'll stay out then you pull down the handle. Edit: Alright video up. This version fires oodammo.

Sturdy folding table? (life edited)

I recently found this thing called Life Edited. It's partly about making the most out of your space with multi purpose spaces and having most you furniture either being able to stack/fold away or being transformed. So for example by having your bed folding into the wall and dining table folding into the other wall, you could have a room that doubles as dining/bedroom. Anyway I started drawing up solutions for my home, it's all going well except for one problem. It is that my desk takes up a lot of space in the room. I have two requirements for my desk: 1. it has to be ergonomic 2. it has to be very sturdy, no what so ever wobble or play. I have a such desk, but I really can not figure out how to make it fold/stack/transformable without affecting the sturdiness. any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated!

Next step to the robotic house-maid...

OK, so it's a fairly simple task for homo artifex, but a robot is now capable of folding towels. It takes two minutes of sped-up video to fold the five towels (100 minutes in real time!!), but this is a huge breakthrough in robotics, because towels are not rigid, predictable objects. The towels are different sizes, different colours, and start off screwed up. You may be bored, but I'm impressed. Berkley Website article Still image from dot.Maggie

How To Make an Oregami Swan

Step 1: Take a square shaped piece of paper and fold it in half so that their is one diagonal from one corner to its opposing corner and then open it flat. Step 2: Without turning the paper over fold the lower edges of the paper to the center so that it makes a kite shape. Step 3: Turn the paper over then fold the lower edges again except this time fold the edges over so that each one fits along the crease of the other. Step 4: fold back the edges that were folded in step 3 so that they crease down the center of the narrow kite shape. Step 5: Fold the Bottom up so that it comes just below the top of the paper. Step 6: With the part that was just folded up take a small section and fold it down for the head. Step 7: Fold the paper in half length wise. Step 8: Lastly pull the head and neck of the swan up and there you have it...TADA!!

Advanced, complicated folding-type hinges?

I'm working on converting a panel van into a perfect, optimal full-time living space. It needs a permanent bed which I want to make use of the otherwise wasted cab area (since I won't be driving and sleeping at the same time). When driving, I want it flat against the ceiling and to sleep I want it to fold down between the dash and the back of the seats - a cutout for the top if the steering wheel is fine. This involves moving it through a very specific path through space with a mechanism along the same lines as the folding rotation of a sofa bed. I would like to know what joints are available so that I can figure out the correct combination for the required movement but I can't even find the names of them. "Complex hinges" doesn't seem to bring up anything useful. Any suggestions? Thanks,Mike.

Ambitious Paper, Fabric Folding Project PLS HELP ME?

Our teacher asked us to do an origami product, to show off how geometry is strongly related into that. I decided to make a small project, which is a landscape demonstrator. I tried to be a little bit off the box, but I guess that I failed to bring that into reality. the design as shown in the attached image, should be like a semi-circular plane (70*150cm) which contains the landscape picture, that should fold and fit in a small portable box ( 30*10*10cm). The folding action should be controlled by a small electric motor which is already inside the box. I really don't know how to make this come to reality, and I don't know which pattern I'm going to use.

How to re use a penknife/folding pliers?

From the bottom of my toolbox I have dug out a pen knife I bought some time ago. Its a silverline micro multi tool. I never used it because although the pliers work very well the folding knives, bottle openers etc. aren't held in place by a spring or locking mechanism. Also the rotation is far too easy, and the rotation stop sometimes slips, rendering the knives, bottle openers and everything else effectively useless (i.e. very dangerous to use). As a result I will remove the assorted knives, bottle openers and other widgets, leaving an interesting space to be filled by something else. That something else cannot really be another set of metal widgets (like knives, bottle openers, etc) because they would have the same basic problems, so my question is what would you use the two spaces for? Approximate dimensions; 9x8x55 mm internal dimensions, (one in each handle) box shaped enclosure open on one side. Openings are on opposing sides of the folding handles (see the google images link to see what I mean). Two holes near the ends of the handles which currently hold the widget axle. One idea to get the ball rolling, a mini multimeter in one side, with probes in the other. I'm looking for something practical or useful, something that could be still considered a tool of some kind, but feel free to throw in any idea's you have anyhow.

Sharp Tactical Folding Pocket Knife from Budgetgadgets

Sharp Tactical Folding Pocket Knife Everybody needs knifes, wether it is for a project here, cutting your apple, or just for fun. Budgetgadgets is a fairly new company that takes operates in the free delivery market. The item that I will be reviewing today is a knife, folding release, of reasonable size. When closed it measures approx. 5 inches, when opened it is about 8. The knife is completely made out of stainless metal, and the actual blade is coated in a black substance, for a sleek look. There is a very narrow slice of uncoated metal, which is the actual edge of the blade. The coating has the same colour as the handle. The blade has a proper thickness, and is rigid. Now for the actual review. I will judge the blade on several fronts: Construction quality, appearance, ease of handling and cutting abilities. Construction quality As soon as you get a hold of this knife it feels very sturdy, and has a nice complete finished look. The coating on the blade is nice and even without imperfections. Opening the knife is very smooth, and the locking system works very well. All is operated by one hand easily. Only downside is that is isnt locked when closed. This doesnt bother me though; as I keep it in the pouch that it came with when not in use. There is no wiggle room between the blade and the handle. Appearance Its a matter of taste, but as far as Im concerned it looks great. The knife is entirely made out of good materials, which make it look valuable. The unpainted metal parts are partially brushed, and the black handle had a nice textured surface which looks sturdy. Ease of use As I said before, the knife is easily operated with one hand. Considering the handle of the blade is slightly larger than usual, this knife is operated by larger hands than average ones easily. Its also able to transfer more force to the blade by having a larger handle. Cutting abilities This is what its al about in the end, how well does it cut. A test with a piece of paper works flawless, the knife just glides right through without ripping the paper, and leaves a very clean cut. Plastic is cut with ease to, all on factory sharpness. Cutting fruits is somewhat harder, considering the increasing thickness of the blade, meat on the other hand is very easy to cut. Overall score A knife that offers outstanding value for a small price. For only 7,64$ including shipping this knife comes to your home. Grade: 9,5/10
