free energy (almost)

Wood powered air compressor 15 to 20 feet high, have not added the valves or pistons or gears but i thought this idea up today and felt like sharing it, last month I posted an idea about using steam pressure to pump water vertically and with the right configuration a header tank might be able to be adapted to work this contraption, using kinetic energy with a spring on the main arm and the weight of water to operate the arm to drive pumps. I dislike seeing fires go to waste and theres only so much damper you can cook. its the first time ive attempted to upload a movie, hope it works otherwise this message is pointless.

Free Energy... NOT From Saltwater!

This one's for Kiteman. Right after an independent cancer cure researcher in Ohio discovers that he can make saltwater burn, we get a story from the UK about a water heater with an efficiency of 250%-300%.The device seems to break the fundamental physical law that energy cannot be created from nothing - but researchers believe it taps into a previously unrecognised source of energy, stored at a sub-atomic level within the hydrogen atoms in water. The system - developed by scientists at a firm called Ecowatts in a nondescript laboratory on an industrial estate at Lancing, West Sussex - involves passing an electrical current through a mixture of water, potassium carbonate (otherwise known as potash) and a secret liquid catalyst, based on chrome. full story

Dubious instructable: free energy???

Have a look here https://www.instructables.com/id/RotoVerter/?ALLSTEPS It doesn't scream "free energy" (thus contradicting the first law of thermodynamics) as loud as other weird projects of this kind. Yet I think this instructable either needs some serious TLC or removal. It reads like an advertisement in some parts.

I dont have alot more to say but I think this would be a great stimulant for a collective mind. Any ideas what you would do with it or where you would want to see it?

Perpetual motion & free energy is it possible? Answered

Hi Eric/Instructables, Basically I have been looking at perpetual motion and am led to believe that it is impossible due to the laws of thermodynamics meaning heat/energy has to be transferred somewhere, so I came up with a few designs which may challenge this theory.  Without wanting to reveal my designs and ideas too much I will explain what I am trying to accomplish and would love your opinion as to whether you think they are viable. I have 2 ideas, one is to use 'rare' magnets (which aren't rare at all so cost and obtaining them is not as hard as it sounds!) and have the magnets propelling round like a wind turbine design using the opposite poles effect to repel the magnets and get the turbine started.  Once the turbine is in motion I will harness the electricity created by the movement of the turbine/motor in a capacitor or kinetic store. This stored  electricity  can be used to keep the magnets magnetized by wrapping wire coils round the magnets and passing the stored current through the coil to keep the magnets repelling each other and spinning the turbine. Idea number 2 is a similar concept just dropping the use of magnets and using the method of so called free energy where you can get a small voltage from using a radio antenna, capacitors and germanium diodes (there are several example videos on the internet) again using a wind turbine effect to keep re-fueling the capacitors so the voltage drop when the load is applied is nulified. Perpetual motion is the dream and I think the transfer of heat/energy caused by friction can be harnessed and put back into the workings of the appliance/design, Many thanks for your time in reading this and hope for any replies positive or negative the dream will live on in my head and heart  :)  Mark Smith

Mini HydroPowered Generator..free power!?

Hello Instructables Community! I am planning to build a small HydroElectric plant in the stream behind my house. After years of all that potential power flowing by, I want to do something about it! I know the specifics of using turbines and such, but what I can not figure out is how to use this power! Should I simply wire it into my house somewhere (a special plug), or should I try to do something like store it in powerful rechargeable batteries? One of my relatives gets free Natural gas from a well on his property, and being the wizz he is, modified a generator to turn this gas into electricity and he even has excess electricity to sell back to the power company! That would be a luxury to have, but I know I'd need a lot of water for that amount of power, heh. I'm usually pretty creative, but I'm lacking right now! After searching for a couple hours on the web, I thought I'd see if you guys could help me out. Thanks Kody

I'm skeptical. In one of their ad videos, they show a "similar" generator built by someone, but no pictures of their own product. electricity generators

Alright, so I'm working on a project, which I won't disclose at this time, and I need as many different ways to generate electricity as possible.  Any and all ideas are welcome, nothing is too weird or unconventional.  The on requirements are it needs too be portable and smallish, in theory it should be easily carried on say, a hiking trip or something.  It also needs to be able, even with some circuitry, to charge a battery.  Ideally 2 AA batteries in series, but higher than 3v is OK as well.  So, I will compile all the ideas and, if they will work for my purposes, I will include it in my instructable I'm working on.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated and all ideas are welcome.  Fire away!

Free energy via adjusting buoyancy- why not?

Hypothetical setup- a floating object which can adjust its own buoyancy via ballast tanks full of air (if it's a submarine) or compressing/expanding a helium bag (if it's a blimp).  Naively, it feels like the amount of energy you could harness by letting it float and sink is a lot compared to the amount of energy required to adjust the buoyancy, but I'm starting from the axiom that free energy is impossible so I must have made an error somewhere. If we take the example of a submarine, is it that filling the ballast tanks with air effectively raises the sea level by a tiny fraction, and that water's potential energy is what makes the submarine float upwards? I guess in the case of a helium balloon, the act of inflating it pushes the atmosphere upwards and that is what provides it with lift.  This question was prompted by a Youtube video of a hybrid helium-balloon-airliner that used buoyancy to reach altitude and then glided back downwards, which made me think "that's quite a neat idea... hang on... where does the energy come from?".

The future of "mobile" energy...

Right now our current standard is still to use LI-Ion batteries when it comes to rechargable and power demanding devices. We all want more power for our phones, laptops or battery powered tools on the job.And we also want to be able to charge our batteries faster and faster.Back in the old days a D-Cell like lead acid battery in a flashlight was good for about 3 hours until it started to dim a bit. With up to 4 batteries inside they were not just heavy but also quite hazardous.Chargin was usually done over night and you just hoped they were not blowing up while charging.I spare you the other types that came after and that we still use as they all have their good and their bad sides. If we trust our marketing experts than quite soon we will only have electric cars on our roads and battery the size of a suitcase shall be able to run your car for hundreds of miles. The ideas of graphite based batteries or those using crystals and their forming reactions are all great and promising. Some will certainly make it to the consumer in a few years. The one thing that we are never told though is where all the energy to charge those batteries is supposed to come from.Replacing the combustion engine with electric motors is one thing but if no fossil fuel is used....Energy does not come out of thin air!Right now a lot of countries already struggle to provide a reliable power supply grid and distribution network. If you ever enjoyed a scorching hot day during a blackout caused by everyone using too much electricity you know what I mean...The population is growing as fast as the energy demand for our industries.Solar and wind are well and good but without proper storage solutions of not real use because no one can really predict how much they can produce. You know, weather and such things...If we trust our so called experts than all will come together really nice.By the time we have really powerful batteries we will have enough alternative energy supply chains up and running to keep them charged.I have a few issues with this entire concept, so let's see what other people have to about this:Imagine you have a nice and big cabin somewhere really remote and beautiful - but with no electricity for miles.Obvious solution for the modern hunter or nature lover is to invest into free energy.Free because that is how your solar, battery and inverter system would be advertised. You buy the stuff and after that all the electricity comes for free - the things pays for itself!Reality is a bit off though as you need to maintain and replace the costly batteries over time and such things. All this however totally changes for a residential home.Getting a huge solar system on your roof is no problem.Getting off the grid next to impossible. You see, once (or even before) you sign up for an electricity contract it is defined that your home is in a residential area. This brings certain limitations like the requirement to connect ot gas (if available), water, sewage and electricity.Only way to enjoy your "free" energy is by getting a good deal with your supplier. Some countries do it differently but around here it goes like this:Whatever you use still comes right off the grid. That is because your solar system really struggles to cope with load changes and providing surplus back to the grid. And since your meter is not capable ofworking properly with it either...To make it "fair" it is metered how much you use and how much you supply. Most companies here even do this on at least an hourly base - just to fair...For your bill the amounts are then adjusted. What you supplied is taken off.Sadly in most cases going negativ is not an option - if you provide more than what you use only your supplier is laughing. To make things worse what you supply is valued far lower than what you get from the grid.Often the difference is above 20%.Control....Around here quite a few people basically covered house, shed, carport and all with solar panels. This was while we had a great subsidy from the government to go solar...After now over three years most of these people still struggle to get anywhere near even for their investment.Without the grants the timeframe to break even was estimated to be around 12 years - which is about the time for when you need to replace the lot anyway and start over. Some do get nice savings on their bills though but families with kids not so much...If you have little to no chance to get your investment back before you have to replace it, then it is not really that much of a good deal after all.Imagine in town with hundreds of small houses everyone would be able to get the same money back for the electricity they provide...Pay 18 cents per kWh from the grid and get 18 cents perkWh for what you supply and once you provide more than you use you get money back. The providers won't allow this to happen as it means they not just loose some money but also they would lose control. How could they justify another price hike? How could they explain the blackouts? Why should tey pay you at all... ;)If a city with enough open and unused space would decide to go solar on a huge scale and while add also add a lot wind turbines....Someone would need the electricity provided and someone need to step in for those times where demand is above supply. Here the old triangle of power goes into full swing....You see a city or town would need also need a sub station to handle the electricity and to distribute it to the town houses, shops and so on.Funny thing is that only a "provider" can do such things.Doing it privat is usually only possible in really remote areas, like big mining outposts that just have no other option than using generators or solar/wind.And in most areas a town or city is no longer allowed to be a provider of electricty - at least not in the drirect form.Buying in bulk is no problem, having your own supply system however is not in the books.Right now most, if not all the big wind and solar farms are owned and operated by energy providers. There is billionaires everyhwere who could build a solar and wind farm the size of Texas if they really wanted but they won't do it either...Starts with the land, goes over the usage rights and won't end with activists claiming how bad it all is.Means it won't happen and if it does then the energy providers get together and claim they guy might have money but does not have the right to provide energy unless he actuall starts a corresponding company and plays by their unwritten rules. Can we still dream about it though? The dream is kept alive like the fire of hope that is only a tiny amber. If you sign up for electricity you are asked if you would like to pay bit extra so your electricity comes from alternative sources. Why is that bad, after all it is green? The initial investment might be huge for a wind farm but after that it is more or less just providing mone out of thin air.You can look the cost up for the new windfarm build near you.Same for the electricity prices in that area. And also the expected output of the entire farm.Do the math and calculate how quickly they break even....Once they do it only profit but you still pay the extra to go green.A bit like the new road that came with a toll....After 5 years the motorists paid it off but 10 years later they are still being charged while the road is disintegrating...Now add electric cars and our constantly rising consumption to the mix...We can't provide the electricity ourselfs as we don't get fully paid for it, we can go off grid either. The atom as the source of electricity is being phased out slowly as well. Finally as some might say, considering the thausands of years we have to deal with the produced waste and what aftereffects the storage might bring. Our providers will keep their grip on us for as long as they can.No government will stop them as in return they wouldn't have electricity.A cold war if you like.We never cared how much fuel our cars use until the OPEC decide to limit supplies and drive the prices up.And you can see the riches especially in Saudi Arabia. For most of the big OPEC players it really does not matter anymore whether or not they have oil or not. They make the same or even more money by other means and more modern means now. After this initial shellshock we woke up and decided that for the shopping trip of the wife a small car with just 4 cylinders will do.Overcrowded cities and roads also pushed us more into thinking small.Again it took force to go further, this time by governments slowy "going green".Emmissions, greenhouse gasses, polution, particles and corbon monoxide...Sounded all godd in the ads but it meant we could no longer afford our old car or even got banned from entering the town center with it.But a lot people still can't afford a modern car that meets the standards.Once they finally got the money and car the laws change again and they need yet again a newer car. This created a huge export and recyling market and profits for other people though. And what differenc did it all make in reality? While we were forced to improve and lose money countries like the US refused for years to even consider reducing the pollution.Countries like China and Russia even increased their pollution to impossible levels. We all remember how Bejing was literally shut down for the Olympics so the athletes have a chance to survive the games...We know how the pollution or global warming problem is misused to make money. The governments get huge payouts in the form of taxes from those cars that can't meet the specs. The dealer smiles with the increased sales of cars. And again the government smiles too as they get taxes from this as well.We know it happened before and is still happening with everything realted to fossil fuels, global warming and pollution, so why would electricity be any different?Reactors and coal fired power plants are phased out with basically nothing to replace them.Solar and wind will provide and till then we keep what we really need to keep....There is no plan for what comes after coal and the atom. There is no alternative.Batteries need electricity. And providers will always be the middleman controlling both the price and the availability. So how does this actually work you might wonder...No matter who invents or produces a new device to provide electricity - there is a very limited market for them.A farmer can't buy a full size wind generator and place it on his land...But an electricity provider can buy thausands of them....And if you go bigger than ask yourself who would need a 10 or 100MW fusion generator?Providing electricity is only a viable option if you go big and if you can sell the excess with a profit margin.Leaves only our electricity providers as customers. If you don't have to care about the buying price because it will be put down one way or the other onto your customers than it is like a credit.Only difference is that once it is paid off you start to get money back!Imagine that for your bank account ;)And if you know what you sell can have a very generous profit margin because your buyer does not care then the solar or wind farm will be quite costly to build..."We know we are not cheap, but who else can deliver you what you need?"And like our big supermarkets there will be an agreement on what the wind generator can cost.Ressources....Be it wind, be it solar or just the modern electric motor in your car - they all require stuff that is very limited on our planet.Take Neodyminum.Without it we have no wind generator or fancy motors as we wouldn't have powerful enough magnets.Vital elements and mineral required are only available in a few spots on our erth in quantities justifying mining them.I won't make this much longer than it already is, so please look up what is really needed to keep our future solow and wind projects alive. Then go and check where we can find thes things in good quantities.Once you did you might realise why the world tolerates the abuse of human rights, freedom or just self expression in other countries ;)If only China would stop today to export and sell their rare earths and prcious minerals basically our entire production worldwide would suffer quickly.Entire industries break down quickly and prices for certain things would literally explode. The US already started to re-open long abandoned mining projects as suddenly even the most costly operations become viable again.Think about this next time you fancy a world free of cars and truck using combustion engines ;)

How would 'Rich' people live in The Green City?

I've been asked, "How would Rich people live in my Green City?". Since The Green City is a forum for pure Freedom in every sense of the word (in a good way). Rich people could simply pay for what they want, or need in the Green City. But, it's also a place of serenity. Peace, not full of frustration or anger or hate. It's a good, safe, serene place to live. When I first began discussing The Green Cities possibilities, I started from the ground up. People that already have a lot of money, could simply build what they want in The Green City, but I'm sure as time went on, they would see the 'Good' of what the City is trying to accomplish and they would do whatever they could to help it. If you are Rich you could help shield the Green City from adversity by the power of your money, thus preserving the serenity of the City and the serenity of your home. Not to mention if you have family or friends in the City you would also be helping them out. This is NOT a city where a person can go and become a 'Bum' and live off of others. Everyone MUST contribute something or it is ALL for nothing. Freedom is NOT synonymous with lazy. But, good works can be done in a variety of ways. One does NOT have to work out in the field to do good with those around them. That's all the Green City is about, freedom and doing good to those around you. Simple. Go to: www.thegreencity1.com

Version control in open source or free hardware projects. Standard methodology?

I have a pallet garden project that has morphed from 1 type of pallet garden into 3 types and with several methods of irrigation and water cycling.  Is there a standard method of versioning it?   I have it on youtube on a playlist.  Someone suggested  using Semantic Versioning http://semver.org/  on the videos in my playlist to help me and others keep track.   I do video's a lot because talking to the camera helps define problems for me and sometimes other people do suggest solutions.   http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL00C41C26C91A76BB&feature;=view_all  The project continues to grow. I expect someone to come up with a Stirling or fluidyne method of using solar heat to compress the air in the next couple of months and if they don't I will do it myself.  (It is only 1 psi and 5 watts).   60 litres per hour works 3 pallet gardens together pretty easily.  I have 6 working at the same time right now.  2 vertical. 1 flat and 3 leaning pallet gardens.  I can double that as soon as I build some more.  Brian

"New " old material for experimentation.

This video is about Nitinol memory metal engines that are basically Stirling heat engines and work on a very low temperature difference. I first say this material while watching a video on the founder of 'The Venus Project'. He had small spring that he would stretch out of shape and the heat it - it would come back to its original form and shape. I thought it was neat but didn't see the potential of the material. Also wondering a couple other things car parts related while I am at it, how much force does it take to spin an alternator when its "on". i know that when the car is not on it free spins but once it is and does not have belt hooked to it it is hard if not impossible to turn by hand. thanks for the help.

Free Energy - Am I insane or is it time to wake up?

Some might have noticed that I started a few, lets say, unconventional topics here.I added one just as a response to some very nasty feedback I got in other places. If you wonder what I am talking about check my topics about all things related to magnetism, "free energy" and such nonsense. The feedback I got was directed personal enough and verbal enough that I decided to increase my speed of seeding bread crumbs that might allow other people to "see" things slightly differently.Being called insane and mental case is the only things I use here as most of the rest would qualify as insults of the worst kind. The goal that was claimed I totally missed is to make people open up.Science or knowledge is as fluent as life itself. It eveloves with us, around us and through us.But we learned to use technology mostly to replace humans and to make our life easier. With that laziness also a reduced "desire" for knowledge and understand evolved. It is now far easier to "Google it" and forget it right after than to acutally learn and really understand something.A prime example is the disappearing artform of creating Japanese swords. No industrial process can produce a steel as pure and with such properties as used to be "offered" to the master swordsmith. Both are highly specialsed and rely on each other to create the perfect sword that outlasts generations.Once tradition gives way to modern life even this art will become a lost artform. We lost so much already, be it species, health, enviroment or just a "clean planet".Instead of accepting nature back into our scientific thinking and understanding we will continue to fail and get even more reluctant to learn new things. The blockbusters of science are no longer finding new laws of phsics or trying to understand things. We try to go further and further and use more and more dangerous ways to "create" the energy we continue to use more and more with no regrets.Well, other than complaining about the bills for it, which we wouldn't have otherwise...Why do we need more forms of colliding atoms to create energy? No because we need so much, only because we want more and more and at "centralised" locations.Distribution, control, money...Allowing us to use solar panels to reduce our electricity bill is nice, but try to overdo it and make good money by creating you own solar panel park and you get into trouble already. You can't see it anywhere other then back to your provider. And you only get whatever he thinks is a fair price for it, usually far less than what you pay to get it.Once you reach zero some even won't pay you money at all.And since there is always winter and night times it is only good that there will be always a need for electricity from the grid.Just try to get rid of your elecricity, water and gas connection in a township or city in case you found other sources you get for free.....Even if you build new most won't even allow you to without these "required" connections. If you need waste waster you also need tap water you pay for.And since a waste water treatment is no longer hyginic enough (despite proving the opposite) you can't get out.Gas you might be able to avoid but if there is electricity in the stree than it is already a building requirement to provie to the builder...What if all this nonsense and fakery actually has a true background somewhere?Humans are not meant to fly but we developed planes anyways. What once was a dream for a select few is now the prefered travel mode ofr most going on a far away holiday. But it is only so popular because there is a big demand. And where is demand profit can be made.Like a farmer:If you have ton of corn like twenty farmers around you then your local price will be low.Sell them a bit further away and you might get a lot more.In return our demand is closly related to the demands of those that provide the source of your demands. We all need energy and we evolve into a society that will need more of with every new generation.I try to give you hint in the form of a comparison:If you have a nice man cave and love to tinker than you might have a framed hand drill on the wall to remind you of how it all started for your grandfather.Or in most case you just liked it and got it for 2 bucks from a garage sale LOLEither, imagine all electricity would be gone and lost forever.Suddenly this crappy drill becomes a status symbol because only you can do things other people really struggle with - you drill holes with ease...Imagine the rpice you could ask to sell it..."Free energy" is the same but sadly in reverse. If a company sees a profit than it will be utilised some way.And if it happens that energy is your main income and keeps you rich and in control than you don't mind paying two or three fortunes to someone so he can forget and is happy give you his machine.Or would you really say no to life of no limits and with nothing to worry for your future generations of kids and grandkids?A few tried anyway to make a furtune themself by keeping a circle of trusted persons and finding enough willing investors to get their project going.Even if you can find some flaws there are still doubts about what someone would go through the lenght of providing online updates, sales numbers, testimonials and so on for years.Funny enough actually finding someone who is sceptic and make him check and report about it does not work either. No big university orders one or asks to really check it and provide a real world testimonial. No government or legal agency steps in to stop the "fraud" either. What is real, what is fake, what is disguise - you can figure it out if you want to.Ok, I could, but why bother if litereally everyone one already did and showed nothing works when it comes to the great unknown?Exactly for that reason alone it is worth it!People might make money now from ads or through clickbait but the topic is older than the internet already. And the proof even older than electricity...So many people would not try unless someone convinced them to try it ;)Might be just a bad joke but gets the point:If you ask 20 people if you can swim through the river to get to the other side then you might get confusing answers.1. No problem it is safe.Fully true but the guy might be from far up the river where it has no crocodiles in it...2. You could try it but a boat is safer as there might be corcodiles here.Still leaves you the option to swim as you can't be sure about the reptiles...You could go on and create a near endless list with bridges up ahead and so on.What it comes to is that depending on HOW you ask and WHO you ask the answers can be as different as day and night. In terms of science and making someone understand it take the most basic approach possible.Remember that time in school when your math teacher confronted you the existence of negative numbers? The confusion with the zero and how to add, subtract or multiply...Your teacher might have been great or you a quick learner but imagine the worst possible way to teach you an understanding of negative numbers! You know that 5 - 8 equals -3.You learned that this is true and why it is so.Imagine your teacher would have explained this extra simple like back with the apples when learning to add numbers."If there are 5 people in a room and 8 people leave the room, then 3 people must go back in so that room is empty!"Makes total sense if you expand the number game from above to 5 - 8 + 3 = 0 !!No sense at all however if you do it with people ;)People are not numbers, pressures or volumes, they are "real" to us.We associate certain things automatically, other we learn to associate and interpret through learning.Learning however is no longer actually doing all that would be involved in less technological world. We like magic tricks because we fail to understand how it is done or sometimes even how it is possible.Today it is for entertainment only.A true magician would never use his skills to scam people. But spend enough and research and you can do the same trick you saw on stage. Some not as good or not all though - thats life...Ask a good magician how how long it took him to get his new trick ready for the stage and quite often you get to hear it was years in the making.Think about that fact when you judge what is possible by dedication ;)

NGOs I can approach for sponsorship, regarding my solar project?

As I mentioned in the post for the Sunflower, I'm going to b spending the next year or two traveling around teaching people and communities how to generate and integrate solar energy into their local needs, pretty much for free. I've got a bit of money saved to pay for this if necessary, but was ideally hoping to get some kind of grant or sponsorship just to cover my cost of living, which would probabaly come to about £5000 / US$8000 over two years. I have a very low cost of living. Does anyone know of any NGOs / charities / etc I could approach for this? I'm not really needing or offering anything other than the cash to cover my expenses. I can name drop and put a logo on my website and all that, they wouldn't need to really do much of anything other than sling me the cash, safe in the knowledge that they were instrumental in bringing free solar energy to anyone who wants it. Cheers, Daniel.

Why has nobody found a way to power a vehicle using magnetic energy? Answered

It seems like such a simple solution, yet nobody has attempted it yet. Why? The force put off by magnets is basically free energy, right?

here's a quality concept for you

Feel free to go out and experiment making this concept... https://sites.google.com/site/kitepowerresearch/ It's a scalable, stackable, light in the air, controllable automated AWE Airborne Wind Energy Beasty. And the idea is proving popular. By spinning a bunch of kites from disks on tethers and a tracking rail generator ... you get power The generation side is on the ground. cool eh The drawing is a bit out of date now as the concept has developed... eh a few mins ago... but it's still a good indicator

airplane without fuel from petroleum

This is airplane without fuel from petroleum . It is operated by new material, optical technology, complex energy. major energy are using solar energy and motors are 7 type. not only the mekanism is extremly different but also it is free -gravity. It is doing investigation and required more experiment.

Is there a fertilizer you could make with the help of solar energy?

I'm thinking of further uses for solar energy, in addition to electricty, water purification, and cooking. Are there any chemical processes for making fertilizers which are fairly simple but require heat and or light? I know producing fertilizer is very energy intensive and usually relies on fossil fuels, so if we could move that over to microgenerated free solar energy, it could be pretty valuable.

FREE DOWNLOAD 1915 ELECTRICITY FOR THE FARM

This is not a scan of the original book, but the original book converted to text with OCR, and strictly proof read with QC controls. Thus the charts, formulas can be copied and pasted into something else.  www.gutenberg.org/etext/27257   ELECTRICITY FOR THE FARM LIGHT, HEAT AND POWER BY INEXPENSIVE METHODS FROM THE WATER WHEEL OR FARM ENGINE BY FREDERICK IRVING ANDERSON AUTHOR OF "THE FARMER OF TO-MORROW," ETC., ETC. New York THE MACMILLAN COMPANY 1915   PREFACE This book is designed primarily to give the farmer a practical working knowledge of electricity for use a slight, heat, and power on the farm. The electric generator, the dynamo, is explained in detail; and there are chapters on electric transmission and house-wiring, by which the farm mechanic is enabled to install his own plant without the aid and expense of an expert.    With modern appliances, within the means of the average farmer, the generation of electricity, with its unique   conveniences,   becomes   automatic,   provided   some   dependable   source   of   power   is   to   be had—such as a water wheel, gasoline (or other form of internal combustion) engine, or the ordinary windmill. The water wheel is the ideal prime mover for the dynamo in isolated plants. Since water-power is running to waste on tens of   thousands of our   farms throughout   the country,   several chapters are devoted to this phase of the subject: these include descriptions and working diagrams of weirs and other simple devices for measuring the flow of streams; there are tables and formulas by which any one, with a knowledge of simple arithmetic, may determine the power to be had from falling water under given conditions; and in addition, there are diagrams showing in general the method of construction of dams, bulkheads,   races, flumes, etc.,   from materials usually to be found on a farm. The tiny unconsidered brook that waters the farm pasture frequently possesses power enough to supply the farmstead with clean,   cool,   safe   light   in place of   the dangerous,   inconvenient oil   lamp;   a   small   stream capable of developing from twenty-five to fifty horsepower will supply a farmer (at practically no expense beyond the original cost of installation) not only with light, but with power for even the heavier farm operations, as threshing; and in addition will do the washing, ironing, and cooking, and at the same time keep the house warm in the coldest weather. Less than one horsepower of energy will light the farmstead; less than five horsepower of energy will provide light and small power, and take the drudgery out of the kitchen.   For those not fortunate enough to possess water-power which can be developed, there are chapters on the use of the farm gasoline engine and windmill,   in connection with the modern storage battery, as sources of electric current.   www.gutenberg.org/etext/27257
