Fresnel lens with collimating lens set-up

Hi. Boatingman here. When I joined Instrucables several years ago, there was a post showing a fresnel lens salvaged from an old TV, then set up with the mirror from the same TV, and then set up with a set of collimating lenses. Now, of course, this didn't make an actual laser, but it did extend the useful range of the focal point and, thanks to the mounting system shown, could actually be aimed. I can't locate this "Instructable", so if anyone out there does have it (or if you have done something similar), could you please let me know. Thank you.    Ed

I am trying to find a Fresnel lens for making a cheap DIY projector, and I checked the websites for a few stores nearby and haven't had any luck. Does anyone know of any stores like Lowes or Home Depot that carry fresnel lenses?

Steam Engines? Answered

I am wanting to make a small solar steam engine and am wondering what pressures they run off of usualy? Can you power a pneumatic drill or grinder with steam and use it as a steam turbine? How do people make small boilers to power the steam engines? I was thinking a peice of copper, iron, or galvanized pipe. I would heat it with a fresnel lens from a rear projection tv. Can the spot from a fresnel lens me further focused with a normal glass magnification glass?

making a very powerful sun beam

Hi there,  I  have a question and perhaps you could be of help to me, So my question is ,  is it possible to use cheap Mylar blankets(parabolic form) to concentrate the sun light, so as it would be able to cut through metal. My idea is to use 3 Mylar sheets each  1m square  which will reflect the light towards another  one which will work as a collector and then further concentrate the light to about half a millimeter.  Doing the math (0.5mm²/3m²) is more than 16 million (ok there  will be a lot of loss , lets say 50 percent). The question is, is this worth trying cause i don't want to waste time and money on this. So if someone knows why this wont work , it would be very helpful. thanks in advance

What fun project can I do with around 300 Liconix high powered laser lenses Collimator ,optic lenses, Optic Filter..etc

Old Neighbor of mine was a Senior Laser Technician for Liconix about 10-15 years ago probably still works there. Anyhow he always would always be working on lasers Argon, Helium, Krypton, and his classic cars and overtime his family became sort of family to me. I would watch in awe as he worked trying to learn as much as possible. So I would help him work on his cars or Fix a PC for him here and there or take care of his son. I was only 13 at the time, but he was nice enough to give me a couple lasers for helping that his work was going to discard, some helium, Argon. I had to give the Argon back though because he sold his house and was moving to a better neighborhood. Plus it kept blowing the fuses in my parents'house from the power load. PGE was getting angry cause for some reason the street light sensors in my neighborhood were somehow getting burned out all the time *shrug* I don't know how and had to keep repairing them. Before he left he gave me some extra tubes for when my others eventually died. Most helium and tons of lenses of various sizes which are all tucked away in a box. In my dad's Garage of Death yeah he's a pack rat. But I found a couple of the lenses when I came to visit that I had sitting around the house and thought to myself time to dig the box out, so I'm slowly digging my way to it. Just don't know what fun project to do with all of it other than making a Laser Beam of doom or putting them on Sharks with fricken laser beams attached to their heads I also have a Fresnel lens from a 45 inch rear projection TV. Any Idea what fun project I should make with all of it ? I bet it would make one hell of a laser pointer for my Celestron GPS-GOTO C11 Telescope haha.Thanks for any idea's.

What size lens should I get for my projector?

I found the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdJ1gZDb6gM And I want to make a $100 1280x800 projector. In the comment section in that video he says he used a 120mm fresnel lens for the back (Focusing the 100W LED to the 5.6" LCD) and a 220mm fresnel lens for the front (Focusing the LCD to the wall). I want to make sure that I get the right lens.  Here is the site I am probably going to buy from: http://www.bhlens.com/fresnel_lens.aspx I might even post an article that links to their site so I can get the lens for free. Lastly, I'd like to say that I want it to as small as possible (Hence the reason for getting a not-so-common 5.6" LCD instead of a common 7"). I want to drive a 5Kw Steam Turbin from fresnel lens I have Patent pending but need to know how the magic works Answered

Does anyone know .. how much water the ST would take for 5 Kw out put? how big the Fresnel lens needs to be if using heat covector. I know water does not absorbe suns radiation quickly so using a heat convector of some type... curent design ST weighs over 1 ton ...this is small ST  as possible for 5 Kw out put.

what can I do with a big sheet of fresnel magnifier plexiglass?

My neighbor through out his old rear-projection television, and I salvaged the pane of  plexiglass with ridges in concentric circles used to magnify? or focus? the image.  I am sure I could figure out how to solar heat something with it.. but I thought you all would like to know that I am open to suggestions.

Solar Energy

Hi, i would like to ask for opinion, i am building a solar system where my system start from using a fresnel lense to collect the sun and use it to heat up a boiler, the boiler transfer steam into my tesla turbine and the turbine will turn my generator to produce electricity. Do anyone have any idea of building an own boiler instead of using a pressure cooker that i had seen this idea in somewhere, And, is there any places can provide cheaper fresnel lense as the sun focusing tool?? i will need a cheaper price lense cause of shortage in my budget of my final year project...

How to build a ray box to use for a set of refractions/reflections? Answered

I would like to make a 'solid' ray box (not out of cardboard!), preferably with more than one slot, and shine the rays from it to a set of mirrors, prisms, and all different kinds of reflective/refractive materials. The light would bounce off quite a few medias so I imagine it needs to be quite strong, but again, how strong? I know I need a fresnel lense in order to make the rays coming out of my ray box parallel but what is the rule, what distance does the lense need to be from the source of light, and does it depend on the size and strength of the light? Thank you very much!

optical sensors from projection TV

I have a *lot* of junk from old TVs -  projection lenses, a fresnel lens and pcbs. so far I've only used caps and resistors in small projects. recently I came across a set of 4 optical sensors anchored to the inside of a projection TV, I believe they are used for auto alignment of the RGB images on the mirror. What is a good project to use these in? could I use them to possibly build some sort of solar tracker ? perhaps using an arduino ? any ideas appreciated.

Ideas for searching

So, i have a big 'ol projection tv just waiting to be used for some sort of chaos, and of course turned to my online home of all things makeable. then it hit me.. woulde there be any way to create a search feature based on the requred materials, like turning a parts list into a set of searchable tags. ie: i have a big tv, so i type in projection tv, and all related instructables pop up that list a projection tv. or one step better, use all or some of the parts, like the fresnell lenses, capacitors, focusing lenses, big 'ol speaker magnets, etc. just an idea that hit me. i don't know how this could e done on already created posts, but you could edit the how they are created by allowing parts lists to be actively searched.. well.. gotta go, enjoy?

strange fluid inside a rear projection tv i was pulling apart? Answered

So i was disassembling a toshiba rear projection for the fresnel lense, and figured i'd pull the rest of it apart and see what parts i could salvage, i got to the gun assembly (i think its called that) and was pulling one of the guns to bits to salvage the lens mount and discovered there was some sort of liquid between the gun and the lenses, it smelt strongly like alcohol and burnt when i held a flame to it long enough, i got some on my hands and my hands started getting a burning sensation so i washed it off and stored it in an icecream container can anyone tell me what the liquid is? why is it inside the tv/projection guns?

Heat powered cooler?

It's rather warm around here. And by "rather warm," I mean it's 105 in the shade, and it's 89 in the house with the swamp at full blast. Does anyone have an idea for powering a cooler with pure heat? Perhaps similar to those lightbulb-looking devices that have an inner bit that spins around when placed in direct sunlight, except that is running a little generator that is then running a computer fan, like the ice box air conditioner spotted on this site. The main thing is I'd like the device to actually be powered by heat. Just for the heck of it. Even if it's just heat mechanically powering something to power a fan that I could have just plugged into the wall. So no solar cells making electricity. I can make parabolic reflectors easily if needed, so don't be afraid to use them. What's the best way you can think of to cool off using heat? "Best" can include inefficient but really awesome, like a fresnel lens pointed at a boiler that is providing steam to run a gigantic fan. I'll go get my goggles, ray gun, and keys to the airship.

S-Video to RF creates 5" B&W Monitor?

Does anyone know how I could use the RF MODEM which I removed from an old VCR to convert S-Video out (PC) to RF in on an old black and white 5" portable TV?I'd like to use a 5" tube as a small monitor which will hook-up to my PC without lacing it through VCRs cables adapters etc. And if I find my A4 Fresnel lens I want that worked-in too.The pins on the MODEM are labeled (left to right) as follows:(1-7) BB+ AUD SDA MB+ SCL VID VT+(8-13) (none) (none) AS SCL SDA B+ (14-16) TU (none) (none) (17-20) A/O S/O AFT V/ORF in at the top, RF out at the bottom(I also have a large colour TV with UHF SCART & composite inputs, but I think there's a fault with the HT supply to the tube. Can I use this CRT as a monitor? Answered

I saw this hack on the MAKE blog yesterday, and it reminded me of a project I wanted to try a few years ago: a computer monitor like the one in the  movie Brazil (pictured below). This device appears to be a small CRT screen behind a large Fresnel lens. The lens is easy enough to find in the form of a reading-magnifier, but it was the screen that puzzled me. I couldn't figure out what I could use that I could hook up to a computer. I thought about hacking digital picture frames, but they wouldn't have the cool curved look of an exposed CRT. When the post on MAKE came out, I thought that maybe the screen he used from a Coleman Lantern/TV (which are pretty easy to find on eBay) would work, but I'm not sure. So my questions are these: 1.Could I use this as a computer monitor using similar methods as in the blog post or a different way? 2.Would it be a problem that the TV is black and white? 3.If it's possible, is it likely that an electronics amateur like me could do it? I have experience in circuit bending and blinking LEDs with Arduinos, but little else. This is the deciding factor for me if it is truly possible, I don't want to take on something well out of my skill range. I realize that even if I did succeed, it wouldn't be very useful, but I'm still interested. Is it possible? Thanks, Noah

Making a solar compass

I realized a while ago that if you put something on a rotating  mount inclined to your latitude and adjust up or down for the inclination of the sun (up or down from its equinox path) for that day of the year, you have a compass. For instance, today the sun is just over 23 degrees off its equatorial path. So you have a stick pointing straight out from the mount at a right angle and you just angle it down by 23 and a half degrees. So you tighten it in place at that angle.   Next you combine rotating the entire thing on the ground (keeping your latitude angle correct) and you rotate the mount itself until the stick points straight at the sun.  At this point, no matter where you are on earth, your mount is inclined in line with north/south.  I have 2 little test compasses to try this but it was fully cloudy all day  so I cannot try it out. One uses a Fresnel lens and the other uses a magnifying glass to line up the sun. Just wondering if anyone else has done something like this?  Solar compasses did exist and I had a look today.  They do not look like my thing at all.  They look really complicated! I will post a year of inclination data shortly. Thanks Brian

Solar-powered laser (supposedly)

 I was in this other forum about the Mythbusters' "Archimedes' Death Ray" thing. Our discussion went off topic, so I made another topic! According to Google, a laser is a device that produces monochromatic, coherent beam of light. We have established the coherent part of it by focusing the Sun's energy on point which has a mirror so theoretically, that focused part of the beam should reflect off the mirror. Our design(s) is/are based on multiple parabolas (or Fresnel lenses) to collect and focus light. The light is in turn reflected off mirrors to be combined on a mirror (or lens) which will be used to aim the light to the target. Unfortunately, I forgot the "monochromatic" part of the laser, but that's not a problem. All we have to do is put filters on our parabolas. That should be a cool enough part to filter the light without melting the filter(s) itself / themselves. What would be an idiotic thing to do is put the filter right in front of the last mirror, because it would melt it (unless off course, that filter was a pane of glass).   Any suggestions/comments/design ideas please put them up here. If your idea is just downright stupid (sorry, I don't know what else to use (other than idiotic, or crazy, actually crazy's better than stupid (back to topic))). If it is stupid, I will not use offensive words against you (unless you were swearing on my face); you will, instead, be facing the following words: "Sorry, your (insert suggestion/comment/idea) is not feasible. Please try again". I know it's a bit funny; part of it is for your entertainment, part of it is for your knowing. Again, please post any suggestion, comment, or ideas. High Power LED Collimating optics for projector project.? Answered

Greetings; My projector currently has a high pressure fancy schmancy bulb and when it goes (after another few thousand hours hopefully) I want to replace it with a high power (~100 watt) LED.  That's the easy part.  I can interface with the projector and convince it there is a real bulb firing up - but I need the optics.  Basically, it's a DLP projector so all the light has to be focussed on just under a 2x2cm square hole to hit the colour wheel.  The LED in question is already over that size on the diode die alone.  There are parabolic reflectors available (I think my best option) but they still have a positive beam spread - I need a shrinking beam.  It doesn't have to be perfectly collimated, but I bet that helps.  The original lamp definitely has a converging beam but its hard to measure as you can't operate the lamp with the cover open (safely). SO I'm thinking diode >> reflector (like flashlight) >> convex or fresnel lens. I can't get better measurements at the moment for I'm not near the machine and its finnicky to take off the ceiling.  Penny for your engineering thoughts?
