Hi gadgeteers :) I know what I want and I know how I want it to work. I have seen on here and other sites circuits and projects that almost do what I want, but the they are too complex. Basically I want a keyless vehicle ignition using bluetooth. What it needs to do: When my mobile moves into range it will turn on (and stay on). When my mobile moves out of range it will turn off. It needs to run from vehicle power or recharge itself from it. It specifically does not require an app on the subject device. I normally keep my bluetooth turned off, so it would actually be when it is turned on or off.

That link is no longer valid so I'm wondering if you have any further details how I can get in touch with Nick McClink who was the owner and engineer behind their products. In particular, I'm interested in the 4 Channel DMX Transceiver ( https://www.instructables.com/id/4-Channel-DMX-transceiver/ ). If anyone has a photo of the back side of the PCB or a schematic of the design, I think I could recreate this project on my own. The Raspberry Pi code would of course also be very helpful. I have a P&P; group and we're playing Cthulhu. I thought about giving an artifact as a handout that does something strange. Like a small stone figure that becomes warm or moist after the unsuspecting player holds it for a while. Or an old phone which is clearly unusable, but when needed it rings. Maybe I will need a remote to do that. But I'm looking for really simple solutions. Any ideas?

Hello, out there, I would like to find how to build a ground penetrating gadget. I think there are a lot of 'us' would like to have something that can 'peek' underneath the surface of the ground, not necessary very deep. For example, such a gadget that can help fossil hunting tremandously. And it does NOT have to go all the way to Ground Penetrating Radar. As long as it can detect the differences between the matrix and interested object up to say 50 cm in depth, it will be good enough. And it doesn't matter what physical principle is used: GPR, ultrasound, electrical resistance or capacitance, ... (whatever). What I have in mind in such gadget would be tied to one of the shoes (so, it must be very light weight), using wifi to transmit the signal to iPad/iPhone so that the user can just walk and know the place to dig. Any help or comment will be greatly appreciated.

I was wondering if I could somehow design a simple gadget to detect pulses in your mind to turn a head mounted torch on and off. So far, I am thinkng of putting metal pads onto your head, which would be connected to an amplifier of some sort. Since I am trying to detect Beta waves, "varying frequencies that are often associated with active, busy, or anxious thinking and active concentration." The amplified siignals would then be fed into an op amp active bandpass filter, to filter out all except that specific frequency. The output would then go into a switch of some sort. Would this work? Or are there some problems with it.

I'm working on a Robin cosplay, and I need some kind of wrist-computer set up for my iPod touch. Hopefully something fairly simple, since I really don't have much experience with nor access to major equipment. Any ideas? EDIT: Also, I still need some of the Boy Wonder's various gadgets and such. They'd mostly be just for show, but having at least some kind of decorative functionality (i.e. lights, sounds, lenses, etc.) would be nice. All opinions and ideas are very much appreciated!

Okay i'm looking to make a gadget so that pressing a red button makes it say "No" and pressing a green button makes it say "Yes". How would I go about making such a thing??? I'm presuming i'll need momentary switches of some kind. Thanks for any help :) Note: this is for a guy who is autistic and won't speak. It will enable him to be able to have an opinion by just pressing the button

Hey all, So this year I am going as Inspector Gadget for Halloween and wanted to do my best to have a couple functioning gizmos. The piece I'm focusing on for now is the trademark helicopter that comes out of his hat. I just want the blades to move. Preferably it would be something with an on/off switch (I'm thinking a toggle with strings or something that lead down the handles). Unfortunately I have little small motor experience and I don't know where to start. I know this wouldn't be a very difficult thing for a seasoned person, so I was hoping to get a little direction. Thanks a bunch!

I'm not one to promote or advocate a lot of products but this is pretty cool. I even know of one person who got their iPhone back after it was stolen. It's not cheap but it seems to work, catch criminals and it's still cheaper than the replacement cost of getting new stuff. I haven't checked yet but I'm guessing it'd also get you a break on your insurance if you insure your gear. Might be enough to pay for the service. www.gadgettrak.com/

I have several square wooden cigar boxes laying around in my room just waiting to be put to good use. Recently I've gotten interested in DIY electronic gadgets and I was hoping to be able learn more about electronics while at the same time making use of these boxes. The picture below shows basically what the bow looks like. it's about 6 in. by 6 in. x 4 in. deep. Plenty of space for components. Any ideas for a fun (hopefully fairly inexpensive) project for me?

I had this idea for a spy gadget, but I cannot find out anything about some of the functions I want it to have. I wanted to take an arduino uno and first off give it an Infrared LED and program it so that it can drown out all infrared signals by continuously blasting IR when a button is pressed. A universal jammer if you will. Second off I want it to be able to use an infrared sensor to detect infrared light when the function is active, and display the intensity of such IR on a LED board. Third of all I want it to be able to activate a burning laser LED to help start fires when camping, a sort of laser swiss army knife if you will. Fourth I want to be able to stick turn on a small LED for light. I was looking to see how each thing could be activated by a different button. I have a Keyes KT0003 arduino kit with no instructions on how to actually use the thing. Aside from the laser LED which I know doesn't come with the kit, are the infrared based functions feasible? All I want with the infrared is to be able to detect it and then just drown it out completely with the LED, I don't want to block any specific function. I just want to block IR in general. I also wanted to make an infrared universal transmitter out of it, but all of the things I saw relied on the arduino as a receiver. I wanted to be able to use the arduino as a sort of sonic screwdriver, able to activate any IR based device and control it, by pushing buttons attached to the arduino. Like I said though, everything was using the thing as a receiver, I want to turn it into a handheld transmitter able to control anything with a IR receiver. I just made my first instructable!!!, which is a clever little play on the quintessential "ipod"/gadget sock case...I have an idea to make the same type of case for something possibly as large as a laptop... Unfortunately, I do not have a sock that wide, nor am i willing to knit my own sock that large.. Any ideas on what sort of available alternative I could use? Core77's Greener Gadgets Design Competition wrapped up last Friday and the first prize went to a couple of friends of ours, Limor Fried from Adafruit Industries and Phillip Torrone from MAKE magazine! Their winning entry was the Tweet-a-Watt, A twittering power meter. Their prize was $3,000 which they donated to Engineers without Borders. Congratulations!To make the whole event even cooler, one of the three judges was Instructables co-founder Saul Griffith.It was a roller-coaster ride of a panel discussion at the Live Greener Gadgets Design Competition Judging at the close of Friday's Greener Gadgets Conference in New York City. After a 10-minute overview of some of the notable entries by moderator Allan Chochinov from Core77, the judges--Jeff Kapec of Tanaka Kapec Design Group, Jill Fehrenbacher of Inhabitat, and Saul Griffith of Makani Power--toured the audience through 13 of their favorite projects before deliberating to get things down to the Top 3 (In pre-judging sessions, they were unable to decide on a set of TOP 10). It was a difficult journey, with the audience ultimately chiming in with shout outs, criticisms, defenses, philosophical meanderings, and all the good stuff you would expect from a wonderful, engaged audience. Back in the days when appliances had real dials and switches on them, you could set the program and then put it on a timer switch so that it would run on off-peak electric. Now that they're all software controlled with soft switches you can't do that unless you either pay a premium for one with a timer or if they have memory to resume the program from a power cut. What I'm looking for is a simple little thing with a timer on it that you stick over the top of the soft power button, and it will press it (unless you can trigger a soft switch like a capacitive switch by sticking a voltage in front of it?) when the timer runs down. Is there a little gadget to do this? or does anyone have plans to build something? I know I could hack a timer into it fairly easily but that would mean voiding the warranty. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I figured I would cross post some of my personal favorites. Not all of these are great design, good ideas, or even work - some are just purty. Brenn10 already posted the 2nd prize winner, the Gravia gravity lamp, which has since been retracted by the designer due to it's physical impossibility :-).In order, we get:1) Grand prize winner: The EnerJar - an Instructables or Make project if I ever saw one! Now also has its own website with instructions on how to make your own: http://www.enerjar.net/.2) Arc - a very minimalistic wood surface armband/watch. Kinda like J_Hodgie's Solid Wood Digital Clock 'ible.3) Plug-in Watch - such a simple idea that if it isn't on sale yet in Hong Kong, I'm sure it will be by next week...4) Aperture - a shower head that tells you how much water you're using (powered by the flow of water, naturally)5) Powered by Play! - motion powered and operated Wee/iPhone for 5 year olds. The freebie blood glucose monitors that the big pharma co's give away? I think they can afford to give them away because they rake in so much money by selling the refill strips, which work only with the unit they are designed for. I haven't come across any Instructables using these.I have 3 or 4, lol. I've seen small sound boxes created to play sounds or voices, but have never seen small battery (cell or AAA) powered devices that'll connect to the video inputs to play short videos in a loop. This would be a good product for businesses that want to play a certain video over and over on a TV/monitor display without the need to hook up a dvd player or other power hogging device.

I want to make a gadget which sends a few kb of data via infrared and also receives data via infrared with a timestamp. However, I am stuck as I have only used arduinos before and I have to design a circuitboard which I have never done before, with PIC microcontrollers (must be cheap ones). I need help a) choosing a microcontroller and b) assembling all the components into a circuitboard (ir transmitter, receiver, microusb port to transfer data to pc, battery). Gadget will eventually be portable so make everything light. Thanks Khalid

I've just watched the first episode of Sky TV's new show, Gadget Geeks. It's a mixture of review show, trying out real gadgets in semi-real situations, and Maker show (in this episode, they built a portable bullet-time camera rig, turned an electric tricycle into a monster truck, and made a toothbrush into a sander. This last might sound familiar, and I think there'll be a few more Instructables seen on the show, but I think there's good reason. It was only a passing moment, which I had to pause to take this photo (with my iPod - my proper camera has flat batteries). On the lid of Charles Yarnold's laptop, for all to see, is an Instructables sticker! Are you Charles Yarnold? Do you know him? Did you give or send him the sticker? Did you meet this man at the Newcastle Maker Faire? The community needs to know!

I just recently joined as a Pro member, but I've received a lot out of Instructables over the years. The last "prank" instructable that I participated in were those cell phone zappers. I don't know what kind of experience or success rate other members had with this, but I just wanted to die laughing at times when in stores, doctors offices, etc..., and someone would either call or receive a call, and 'ye olde zapper' went into action, and I'd estimate a good 90+% of the time, the call was terminated very shortly because of a dropped [or loss of] signal. My unit was rigged up in a book, so it was really drew no attention.
