Ghosts in the machine?

If anyone here has seen Irobot ( which you must have to be on instructables ) are familliar with the line "ghosts in the machine" which basically means there are always thigns/ functions we cannot explain. What do you think about this, how long until we make machines that truly "think for themselves, and can strategize to overthrow us. Recently in a podcast i listened to, the host talked about a robot that was created, and could "think" for itself. It has already though up and tested it's own theories. ( a bit scary ) Basically the point of metioning this, is to help people realize we have already taken the first step. Now the question is, how long until we outdo ourselves, end up in virtual worlds and the earth is one giant farm that the robots use to farm us for power?

Seeing Auras & Ghosts

I have posted this on other forums without much response. Since some of the best minds use this site, I should get a lively response. Friday, on a TV show called 20/20, they interview some kids that said they see auras and spirits. Do any of you know people who can do that? I have tried to see or photograph auras without success. It seems that these things may be visible either in the ultraviolet or far infrared and require someone with eyes that are more sensitive to these wavelengths. Young kids would be better at that. Infrared and ultraviolet light (UV) are in our environment, even though we can't see it. You would expect that different people would look different under UV, just as they do under visible light. Additionally, some things show fluorescence under UV. Perhaps auras are differing fluorescence by individuals as seen by those with extended visual response. It might be interesting to look at various people under just UV or just infrared (perhaps using night goggles) and note the observations. It would be interesting to have someone view auras through various filters to see how the auras change. Are auras affected by magnetic fields? Would smoke in the air have an effect? Does the aura look better with a dark background? Does getting drunk help? Ghosts are probably more difficult. It is to be expected that God doesn't want us asking them sensitive questions (like "Where's Heaven?"). ~Bob~

Ghost riders in the sky

I know that this probably isn't the perfect site to be asking for this, but I figure I'll give it a shot. I'd like to come up with a design for a picture I intend to create, which shows the Four Horsemen, except instead of horses, they're riding motorcycles. If anyone is familiar with The Outlaws' version of the song song "(Ghost) Riders in the Sky", I'd like it to fit in with that theme: hard-charging, kind of dark... you can tell from the atmosphere that they're Hell-riders. I'm trying to come up with a layout for it: how are the Horsemen arranged, what precisely do their bikes look like, where are they, and are they chasing the Devil's Herd of cattle? And should they even be the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, or just regular cowboys who were eternally damned, like the song goes? Both have different visual possibilities. So what I'm looking for is even the crudest drawings depicting one aspect of the picture that you think would be cool. Maybe you have the idea for the perfect shape and level of tattering to one Horseman's cowboy hat, and would like to suggest that. Maybe you think that if one of the guys was riding a Vincent, it'd be the most badass thing since open pipes. Chasing the cattle through a canyon, or idling at the top of a cliff looking down on the Devil's Herd? Any cool color palette you've seen? good reference photos? Stick figures are great. Here's what I have so far, although it can be changed no problem. Like I said, I'd like details of the coolest intake you can think of, the perfect instrument panels, the perfect trenchcoat for a rider. Any little detail, rendered in any level of quality. I'm considering showing them all riding along side each other, holding rifles, instead of the badly-perspectived parked scene shown here. Have the perfect design for the mountains? Toss it in! I plan on making these very huge, so don't worry about details being too small. You'll notice that I'd like to have one Indian, left-hand throttle bike, potentially a big twin, and potentially a Four, with fringed leater seat and saddlebags. I'd also like to have a stretch chopper with a king & queen seat, but I can't decide between a wide or a narrow tire. Notice how the Indian rider is holding his rifle in the second picture. I'd like to have him holding a gun, and at least one of the other guys having a pistol belt with two Colt Peacemakers. If anyone has a cool way of depicting that, please share. I am open to suggestion as to what the right rifle would be. You can also notice that in the second sketch, there is a Harley springer front end lurking in the background on the left, and I didn't draw the Indian rider's whole body, so that's actually Chopper Dude's rear wheel, not Indian Dude's head.

Ghost Shoes recreated in the Netherlands

I got a message from a woman in the Netherlands named Vera that she had recreated my Ghost Shoes projects with a group of kids. This is so sweet! Seeing someone super far away redoing something I made is a great reward. It looks like they opted to make them with throwies instead of the full-on solar panels, but it's still great. Gotta love the pictures of kids with their shoes covered with plastic wrap and tape. Link

MPF102 replacment for a Ghost Detector? Answered

I was gonna build a simple one LED device that can detect a static charge (which in Theory ghosts give off a static charge making the LED to go dim) using this MPF102 FET Transistor, but Radioshack doesn't sell these anymore, is there another different FET that works as the MPF102 FET one? I was gonna try this one http://www.radioshack.com/nte2902-j-fet-n-channel-vhf-uhf-amp-25v/55052700.html#q=FET&start;=3 - but not sure if this would be a great replacement for detecting a static charge like in video saying I need this MPF102 one. stop 7-segment from ghosting?

I'm working on a simple arduino 7 segment driving circuit. (It also has a led bar-graph that displays binary numbers but that part is working fine.) When I get the display working I might make an instructible out of it. Here's the basic layout: -using this 8 segmet 4 digit common cathode display. -arduino controls what segments are on via 74HC164 8-bit Serial Shift Register -shift register controls an array of 8 PNP transistors with base and pull-up resistors -transistors connect to display anodes through resistor array -display cathodes (common for each digit) connected to array of 4 PNP transistors with base and pull-down resistors  -PNP transistors controlled by arduino. (I will post the schematic shortly.) In software, to display a four digit number, I shift the pattern for a given digit to the shift-register, which in turn turns on the PNPs for the corresponding segment anodes. I then turn on the NPN for that digit's cathode. I delay for a few milliseconds, then turn the NPN off, shift the next digit in, and turn the NPN for that digit on. Rinse and repeat. It works fine but the segments that should be off are at about 1/2 brightness, making all the digits look like eights. Even the DP looks like it's on and I'm not turning it on anywhere. Do I need pull-down resistors for the anodes or something? What's going on here?

Custom Wii Gun

I remeber back to the summer I was at an arcade playing Ghost Squad. Now that it is out on the wii, the fun was only half way there. I played with the wii zapper, and as much fun as it was, it just isn't cutting it. My favorite part was the force feedback gun that gave some recoil. I decided to go making my own, but I can't think of something to give enough punch. I plan to make a PVC gun outline and encase the wii remote. I would then rig a trigger on the PVC rifle to pull the fire button on the wii remote. From there, I could connect the wires so at a certain point on the PVC trigger pull, an electrical current would be completed activating the recoil. I started with thinking about takeing out the rumble motors in some old game controlers, but that would only go so far. I really wanted a staight back and forth movement. I started to think about taking a piston similar to an airsoft gun, were the motor cranks a gear that pulls the pistion back. This gear as some teeth shaved clean so that after so far of an extend, the teeth would inentially slip causing the built up spring to push the piston back into the starting position. Before it got too complicated and I started to build it, I wanted to make sure this was possible. Is it possible/practical? What type of feedback should I use, and were can I get it? -John

Makers At The Movies: Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

Last night i went to the movies and saw Mission Impossible: Ghost protocol, and it was impressive in the amount of cool tech that we are going to see down the line. Apple was displayed the most with the iPhone and iPad. Here are some that impressed me the most: SPOILER ALERT Contact Lenses with Facial Recognition: A large part of this movie relies on contact lenses that are worn that act as cameras, copiers and can do real time facial recognition. (connected of course to your iPhone) This tech already exists and the issue here is scale. I see Augmented Reality contact lenses being a regular thing in the next 5 years, and with cloud computing only getting better, real time analysis of large amounts of data is becoming more and more plausible. Can I Make It? Score: Nah, this is more in the realm of darpa, but i wouldn't mind an iPhone app that i can pull up when people say hi to me and i don't remember who they are. Reversible Dress Coat: There is a scene when going from a Military outfit to a regular tourist, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) with the flip of hist wrist makes the pressed jacket he's wearing into a windbreaker. This was impressive and seems not hard to recreate. Can I Make It? Score: I plan on it, with a dress jacket and a windbreaker, yes i'll post and instructable. Sticky Gloves: These are featured in a climb hundreds of stories up and have a mark of DIY-ness. These gloves are not the most safe, but are pretty friggin cool. I wouldn't mind having a pair. Can I Make It? Score: Maybe, but given they didn't explain the tech, i have no idea what the concept is. If it was magnetic, it would be a bit more realistic, but these stuck to glass. Have you seen a good "maker" movie lately? Did I Miss anything from Mission Impossible that you like? Comment below!

i'm looking for an idea to make and float ghost props on Halloween.

I've seen a couple instructables on ghosts in here, but not one that fit the bill. This year I tried a helium filled balloon with white material on it. The idea was to use an LED inside the white balloon, drape the material over the balloon and let it float in my front yard. Secure it with fishing string. But the lightest material I found was still too heavy for the balloon. The material wasn't cheesecloth, but as close to it as i could find. Any ideas or recommendations?

How can I power this 3watt LED bulb / parts from it?

Hello, I have some color changing LED light bulbs. They are 3 watts. I have one that popped in the socket so I took it apart. I have a flying ghost decoration I would like to light up. Even if it's just rigging the single led itself into the ghost, or as much as creating a battery pack that will run a full bulb itself. Can anyone help me or point me to some useful reading. I don't have much electronics experience past my high school electronics class, and that was 10 years ago.  How can I run power to the disassembled bulb to see if it works at all still (doubtful)? If that doesn't work I would like to take out the single led and see if it still powers at all.  Ghost innards attached if someone could be as brilliant to say something like solder an led to here n here.  Thanks for for reading and thanks for any help!

Need a Circuit Schematic to detect Static Charge with an Ammeter

I been trying to find a Circuit Sim app to play around with and create a real circuit that can detect Static charge, which in theory Paranormal Investigators say ghosts can give off a static DC charge to the meter. The only thing I can do is....build this little Circuit like this http://www.eskimo.com/~billb/emotor/chargdet.html - just with a LED to dim indicating a Charge, but I wanna go for a more complex version of this by adding in an ammeter to Detect the Charge as (Milliamps) MA about 0-20 for sure, but I don't know how to make do to that. So I been wanting to build something both cool and try to detect Ghosts with this thing, and just have fun with Circuitry.

need help writing Arduino sketch for Nano to Adafruit FX mini soundboard communications?

Hello everyone.  I am new here, and fairly new to arduino. Im an electrician/ communications tech by trade, but have only been working with code as a hobby for a few weeks (have wanted to learn this for a long time).  I am working on a project that would require an Motion sensor input to play an audio track at random, whilst illuminating a corresponding PWM LED. said LED should fade in sync with the audio file. ITs a robot of sorts that will detect movement and speak a random audio track.  Some nice (0-5) and some not so nice (6-12).  it will have a a diffused glow when on, blue when speaking nice, and red when speaking not so nice.  hence the audio input to act as an anologRead and output to the PWM's I know, a lot to take on for a noob.  but go big or go home.  I have put together what I thought was a good start sketch, but it doesnt even illuminate an LED, communicate with the soundboard, or serial link on the monitor. I think I am on the right track in regards to the parts and overall Idea.  And im pretty sure my sketch needs a lot of work, but i am trying. so here are the parts I had intended to use. (if im going down the wrong path, or you see another way, feel free to say so.  I expect some criticism, I can handle it) Arduino elegoo Nano V3.0, CH340/ATmega328p Adafruit Audio FX Mini soundboard w/o amp Adafruit Mono 2.5W Class D amplifier (PAM8302) Sodial mini IR motion sensor module, 3-pin LED's are undecided for finished product, but i was thinking RGB 6302's (5-7) speaker is an 8 ohm 2W power will be supplied by a small 3.7v lipo (thats the plan) My wiring idea should be easily discernible from the sketch, but i can draw my idea, and add it if need be. I did install the soundboard _library. but thats the only one (didnt think i needed others) Any and ALL help is greatly appreciated. the sketch...
/*   Menu driven control of a sound board over UART.   Connect UG to ground to have the sound board boot into UART mode */ #include #include #define SFX_TX 9      // Defines pin D9 as TX to FX Mini #define SFX_RX 10     // Defines pin 10 as RX to FX Mini #define PLAYING 11    // Connect to the ACT pin on the FX Mini #define SFX_RST 13   // Connect to the RST pin on the FX Mini SoftwareSerial ss = SoftwareSerial(SFX_TX, SFX_RX);  // Passes Software Serial to FX Mini SoftwareSerial mySerial(SFX_RX, SFX_TX); Adafruit_Soundboard sfx = Adafruit_Soundboard(&ss;, NULL, SFX_RST); // can also try hardware serial with // Adafruit_Soundboard sfx = Adafruit_Soundboard(&Serial1;, NULL, SFX_RST); int incomingAudio;            // Audio input assigned from FX Mini Right audio output int RedLED = 5;         // the PWM pin the Red LED is attached to int BlueLED = 3;        // the PWM pin the Blue LED is attached to int LED = 4;            // the output the normal state LED is attached to int Button = 12;        // pushbutton test play track pin int Track = random(0,13);     int inputPin = 2;       // choose the input pin (for PIR sensor) int pirState = LOW;           // we start, assuming no motion detected int val = 0;                  // variable for reading the pin status void setup() {   Serial.begin(115200);         // softwareserial at 115200 baud   Serial.println("Adafruit Sound Board!");   ss.begin(115200);      pinMode(LED, OUTPUT);           // assigning LED as an output   pinMode(RedLED, OUTPUT);        // assigning RedLED as an output   pinMode(BlueLED, OUTPUT);       // assigning BlueLED as an output   pinMode(incomingAudio, INPUT);  // assigning incomingAudion as an input   pinMode(Button, INPUT);         // assigning Button as an input   pinMode(inputPin, INPUT);       // declare sensor as input   if (!sfx.reset()) {     Serial.println("Not found");     while (1);   }   Serial.println("SFX board found"); } void loop(){   digitalWrite(LED, HIGH);        // assigning LED to start with +5V   incomingAudio = analogRead(A0);               //read voltage at A0   incomingAudio = (incomingAudio+1)/4 - 1;      //scale from 10 bit (0-1023) to 8 bit (0-255)   if (incomingAudio<0){                         //deal with negative numbers     incomingAudio = 0;   }   PORTD = incomingAudio;   Serial.println(PORTD);   val = digitalRead(inputPin);                 // read input value    if (val == HIGH) {                          // check if the input is HIGH       sfx.playTrack(Track);       Serial.println(Track);       if (pirState == LOW) {                   // we have just turned on       Serial.println("Motion detected!");      // We only want to print on the output change, not state       pirState = HIGH;       }     }    else {       if (pirState == HIGH){                   // we have just turned of       Serial.println("Motion ended!");         // We only want to print on the output change, not state       pirState = LOW;     }   }     if (Button=HIGH){                             // pin D12 to button, ground thru 10K res, and +5v       sfx.playTrack(Track);       Serial.println(Track);       }   if (incomingAudio>=128 &&Track;>=0 &&Track;<=6){      digitalWrite(RedLED, incomingAudio-128);      digitalWrite(LED, LOW);      }   else if (incomingAudio>=128 &&Track;>=7 &&Track;<=12){      digitalWrite(BlueLED, incomingAudio-128);      digitalWrite(LED, LOW);      }   else{      digitalWrite(LED, HIGH);      digitalWrite(RedLED, LOW);      digitalWrite(BlueLED, LOW);      delay(15000);   } }
The Thought Bunker #2

Hello! I am hosting a Forum Topic train. This one involves some thinking. But it's not math! It's the fun thinking. The kind you can talk and laugh about. So, what do you say? This week's Thought Bunker: If ghosts go through walls, why don’t they fall through the floor? I think it's because they can choose to. Kinda like how we can choose to follow the rules or not............. Well, what do you think? Tell us! This weeks best thought:   Nov 17, 2009. 12:57 PMKiteman says: Not that they exist, but my favourite hypothesis was that it was force of habit - they walk through walls that weren't there when they died, at the level the floor was at when they died. There are several stories in the UK of ghost Roman patrols walking down roads knee-deep in tarmac, stepping on the original road-surface.
