Glass Desk

So I'm in the middle of this rebuild of this stand up desk that I am finally getting around to. Now I tore off the old laminate, it was cracked so on, and so on. Now I was going to just put new laminate on it however, I sanded down the wood directly below and while I was rearranging my shop I  placed some glass I had laying around on top of it. Looking at it I realized I wanted to put glass on it instead of laminate.... (Thought process incase anyone is interested.... No one? Okay moving on.) Two questions.  One What type of glass should I use for the desk. I know tempered glass is safer, however I also know it will break much easier. Plus, the glass wont be floating with nothing below it so its not like if it does break glass will go everywhere if I use normal glass. And I don't want to use plexiglass because I don't want to have to deal with scratches.   Two Can I go to Home Depot and get glass cut to my dimensions needed for the desk?

Glass alternative

I have a large map (55" x 40") that I am building a frame for, yet there's no way I can afford a piece of glass this large and am looking for cheap alternatives. I am aware of plexiglass, but am wondering if there is anything else out there. My last ditch resort is to laminate it, but do not like that idea to much for aesthetic reasons. Thanks

Movie Glasses

I had an idea the other night, but no idea of how to go about it. I Want to take two small screens probably about one to two inches big, then mount them on sunglasses and somehow input movie from an HDMI or an HDMI micro. like This: http://www.chinavasion.com/cool-gadgets/60-inch-virtual-video-screen-glasses-for-iphone-ipad-ipod/ but for anything that can output HDMI. i thought about this when i was on the plane and was tired of the people behind me asking to tilt the monitor -.- i have a Thrill 4G that uses a Micro HDMI to HDMI so im sure it would work with my phone and many others if we did it(although users without that HDMI port would need the adapter that makes Mirco USB to HDMI aswell) so basicly.. Drilling holes in glass

Hi all, I'd really like to work with glass objects. But I need to drill holes in glass. I have no idea on how to do this, and if any special tools or techniques are required. If anyone know anything about working with glass and drilling perfect holes (without breaking the glass), can you please instruct me on how to do this. Thank you

Thick Conductive Glass

I have a desk with a glass surface and have this inspiration to mount the tablets that I use as additional monitors under the glass. I need to replace it with something that will allow the touch inputs through it. Ill settle for any solid transparent material but I need it too have a decent thickness that I can maintain roughly the same strength of the glass material as part of the pretense is I would like to be able to still set things on top of the desk and use it as a workspace.

Japanese Glass Float

My dad is going to give me a glass float (which will be called a glass ball from now on) but I need to make something to hold it so that it doesn't get broken. I'm not quite sure how big it is exactly, but it's definitely bigger than a volleyball. Anyway I have absolutely no idea what to make for it. I want something that will look good but not cost too much. So... Any ideas?

Projecting onto glass

Alright here's my question, I know I've seen it done a couple places, the first image I could find as an example was just this :http://www.en.dnp.dk/data/4418/3791/4418.jpg# (just see below)What kind of glass do I need to do something like this? I'd like to build a table of sorts out of glass with a projector built into the frame under it to project upwards onto the glass, then eventually perhaps adding an IR sensor and work towards building a touchscreen/MS-Surface-like table. Any thoughts? Obviously its not normal glass or the projector would just pass through it

Video projection on glass?

Hi I was doing some resources on how to achieve a rear projection on transparent surfaces like glass, but without of much success (there are projects on this site, but all are using a black projection material). I would like to do it on a shop window using a projector. I have found out that I need some special foil to get this working, but most of them are black and not transparen and there are a lots of brands. I am wondering if there would be a DIY solution, maybe a frosted white sticker cut to the size would work, to still keep a level of transparency on of the window. Suggestions are welcomed! Thanks!

Glass Question - How could I make a spout for a pitcher?

Okay, I am making some glasses from some old 750ml bottles (vodka if you must know). I happen to have a matching 1.5L bottle, which would be too big for a drinking glass. I was thinking of turning it into a pitcher (no handle - it's small enough to wrap my hand around). However, I have no idea how to make a spout. Is there an easy way to do this? I'm guessing heat would be involved. Would this be too difficult or dangerous to attempt? I haven't really worked with glass beyond using a glass cutter here or there. Thanks.

Exploding Glass Tears-- forgot the name, but it's called "(some Austrian city) tears." ? Answered

You get a super-strong tear-shaped glass object that's incredibly strong-- stood up to repeated hammer blows on the bulb end. But when the "tail" is snapped, it bursts into powder. There's a wikipedia entry, but I need the name to find it again. I'd like to try it, but I need better info to avoid long trial/error sessions with hot glass.

What is the ultimate glass glue?

I've been looking for the ultimate glass glue. I have tried many that claim to be, but in reality they are pretty much Testors model glue in a different package. All I have come across dry a bit rubbery and while it may be desirable in some projects, with a little flexing, the glue peals away. I have seen glass glued to glass that was clear, rigid and unyielding. So I know that it does exist. Suggestions.....

I have painted several glass blocks for a craft show.  When I put the lights inside and turn the block back over, all the lights fall right to the bottom of the block and the top of the block is not lit.  I see yours are lit and most of the ones I see are lit up top.  I tried glue dots which only stuck to my nails instead of the glass block.  Any suggestions?

Take 28,000 panes of glass...

Takes 28,000 panes of glass, cover them in explosives, and ignite. The result is rather grand, and already a relic of the past before it's even finished... I don't have a clue what most of the voice-over on this ten-minute version is saying, but if you listen you can hear "western" words cropping up in the middle of Arabic sentences.

I am in works of putting together a glass dome with a wood base and a model inside. I am looking for ideas of ways to have the glass dome lock itself onto the base and having the option to unlock.  So I do not want to permanently bond it I'm trying to think of some clever way of being able to have it lock whether you twist or some other way but I'm stuck .  The photo below is similar to the shape of the dome I have acquired as far as shape I will just be using a knob instead of a rope on top and then below that is the bottom base I have which is more like a plate  and not as deep as that first image

Heat absorbing glass question Answered

I'm taking apart a Kodak 4200 projector. The lamp assembly includes a piece of "heat absorbing glass".  The manual says not to touch it unless wearing gloves, to keep it covered when out of the projector, and that it may shatter.  Being clueless, this sounds spooky.   Is it dangerous, or will I just wreck it for projection if I get fingerprints on it?  Most glass shatters, but is this going to spontaneously burst into shards?  It's not going back into the projector.   Is it useful for anything, or should I wrap it in foil and toss it in the garbage?
