Go Go Gadget Forums!

I want to be Inspector Gadget for Halloween this year, replete with a bunch of cool Go Go Gadgets. I was wondering if any of you have some ideas or suggestions. What I'm really looking for are plans for exploding messages, extendable hands, and maybe even a hat umbrella or helicopter (non-functional, obviously).

Stop and Go

This is a pretty easy trick. I will tell you that it does not look cool, but it does come in handy. See, stop and go is a trick where the yo-yo literally stops, then starts sleeping again. This comes in handy if you are in a tournament and your yo-yo's sleep is about to die. First, get into a brain twister mount:Throw a strong sleeper. Point the index finger of your non-throw hand out and bring the yo-yo up. Now move your throw hand under the yo-yo and up again on the other side.*For more detailed instructions, go ahead and surf the web*The trick itselfOkay, now that you are in the brain twister mount, bring your throw hand up and under your non-throw hand so it forms a sort of cup. Now move your hands up a bit and the yo-yo will come up to your hand. Be prepared to catch it. This is the "stop" part of the trick "stop and go". Now for the "go" part. Bring your throw hand under the yoyo and twist it so your fingers point away from you. Now pull your throw hand down and leave your non-throw hand where it is. The yo-yo should start spinning again and you are ready for more tricks.

I'm Going...

... to the Maker Faire at Newcastle this afternoon, representing Instructables along with gmjhowe (who's done most of the work), Steveastrouk and others. There should be some sort of internet access, but with a lot of people using it, I can't promise to post anything over the weekend. Look for posts on Monday, or, even better, come along to the Centre for Life, find the Instructables stall, and say hello to us all.

Go Green!

Just kidding!  Thanks for having me in your group.  It´s been awhile since I have been back to AA but it will always be one of my homes.  Please take time to check out my instructable for Agave Wood Personal Theater.  Hopefully, later today it will be approved for the Wood Contest (still waiting). If any of you visited the UM botanical garden this past summer you may remember their agave americana was in bloom after 80 YEARS of growth and waiting.  Here´s a link http://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2014/07/u-m_botanical_gardens_80-year-_1.html . My project was made using the same variety of agave and with the flower stalk and thorns.  In addition, I used nopal cactus (prickly pear) and a homemade wax to finish it.  Thats´s it.  It is 100% natural and vegan.  I know these words can make some squimish but for real when was the last time you could say that about technology? Please visit my project and feel free to comment:  I would love to find collaborators to work with from your organization when I visit AA in the summer. GO GREEN!  GO BLUE!

Where to go.

I am 22 from SE Asia, I am working as a programmer. A self-taught guitar player, that loves building project on electronics and wood work. I have been contemplating of moving out from my country, maybe in the next 2-3 years, but I am not sure where and what skills should I keep on improving if I want to emigrate to another country. What skills that I have now or I don't have should I improve or learn to be able to financially support myself in another country. Thank you for any advice or insight you can give.

Thunderbirds are go!

Abu Dhabi has started to build what it says is the world's first zero-carbon, zero-waste car-free city.Masdar City will cost $22bn (£11.3bn), take eight years to build and be home to 50,000 people and 1,500 businesses. The city will be mostly powered by solar energy and residents will move in travel pods running on magnetic tracks. Finally, the world imagined by Gerry Anderson is starting to be built - whole cities built as one thing, people travelling on monorail pods, centralised desalination plants, massive hydrogen plants... the chances that they will need International Rescue seem greater with every corner you turn.Still, it could be A Good Thing - if it works, this could be a big stimulus to other nations to start working on carbon neutrality with a vengeance. Certainly the promotional video makes the whole thing sound very tempting ...BBC articleMasdar Initiative homepageDeveloper's promotional video

Going postal!

We had a parcel delivered today (somebody has been buying shoes again).  When I opened the door to the courier, he handed me the gadget to sign for the parcel, glanced up, and said Oh! Instructables! I was, of course, wearing my robot t-shirt. He was busy, so our chat was necessarily brief, but he admitted to being a member, but using the site as more of a spectator sport than a resource.  In his words; "My god, what have they built now??" It is quite peculiar to find the places where I find fans of the site, and where I don't.  I have been a supply teacher for the last couple of years, and I reckon I've met a couple of thousand high school kids in that time.  I typically wear a Robot pin badge, and occasionally it gets recognised by kids.  They've typically been using the site as a resource for their own hobbies, mainly in three areas - making knives, building K'NEX guns or cosplay costumes. In that same time, I've met dozens of teachers of the kinds I would expect to be big fans of Instructables - DT ("shop") and Science teachers, but only one Science teacher (if he's reading this, hello Cliff!) had heard of the site (he used it to build a set of video game cabinets), and none of the DT teachers had (a situation I quickly fixed). That's it really, just making a couple of observations, unless you'd like to mention the oddest time you encountered an instructabler or instructables reference? Oh, and I forgot to ask the courier what his user name is, so, if you delivered a pair of shoes to a chap in a navy Robot t-shirt, please let me know.

Laser or LED go go dancing Cage

Hi There, Im tryin to build a laser go go dancing cage for a big theatre production. Iv done basic wiring of LED's but never worked with lasers before. After  lot of scanning the net it seems it might be easiest to just buy a bulk load of laser pointers off aliexpress (or somewhere else?) and try to wire them into a circuit so i can turn them all on at the same time. I want the effect of the bars of light as seen in the pics below. I have been asking around with electricians and they don't seem to either want or know how to help me.... I would LOVE any help or direction anyone can give me!!! if anyone can help answer any of the following questions id GREATLY appreciate it! 1. from what iv read it seems 5mW might be best for this purpose as more powerful lasers may burn the skin (i definitely don't want to be responsible for burning the building down!) Does anyone have any thoughts on what mW i should be using for this? 2. Ideally i would like the laser cage to be able to be seen without the use of a fog machine (i will use this for effect in certain parts of the show- but would like it to still be visible when its not there) Is this possible, or would i need a stronger laser that would be too dangerous? 3. i don't really know anything about calculating the voltage or what power battery i would need once i had say 50 lasers together in a circuit. Does anyone have any links for working this out? I'm not sure if it is specific or different for lasers? 4. I read that i would need a driver, is that true? any links for that would be great! 5. are there insanely high powered LED's that could have a strong focussed beam that would be better/easier to use and i should forget about lasers all together? 6. do you have a totally different idea of how i should go about this that would be a lot easier?? Thanks!!! Andea Darling ****it won't seem to upload the reference pics so heres a couple of links to give you the idea -  http://www.qratio.com/2013/10/gotta-dance-just-find-your-rythym.html http://www.telovation.com/articles/ipod-laser-dance-cage.html

Making a go-kart

Hi, I am going to make a go-kart in my holidays. I am going to do it using the body and wheels from an old three-wheller buggy. I'm planning to have a search around scrapyards for a smallish engine. Whats the best way to get the power to the wheels? Is there a gearbox on all engines? I think I will use some disc brakes off an old bicycle or motor bike if I can find one. thanks glynlowen

go kart kits

I'm going to build a go-kart kit and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to buy.I found this go cart. I would like to build it myself but for that price (400 dollars) I rather buy that than spend 800+ dollars on something not as good as that.Bottom lineI found a nice go cart for 400 U.S. dollars. I would like to build a kit but not spend more than 400 dollars and that at least performs as well as the one in the above link. The kit has to total less than 450 dollars and have everything I need. Thanks Jrb

Going to school in the UK

This is something that i really want to do but I have quite a few questions. 1.It is really pricey are there any scholarships that americans can apply for? 2.How hard would it be to obtain residency after graduating? 3. How long does your visa last? 4.I want to go for engineering (mechanical, chemical, electrical) not sure witch one yet. What are good schools for these? 5. What test would i have to take here we take the ACT or SAT and where could I take it? 6. I could still buy and consume beer even tough I am american once I go over there? The biggest issues are paying for it and getting accepted. The reasons i want to go is because i love the UK. They have good food and there public transportation is GREAT. Americas sucks. Stuff is just better there.
