Efficiency contest

Disclaimer: I may be biased, since I have an entry in the running.I am very confused as to why the current leaders of the efficiency contest are in the contest at all, nevermind winning. One is not instructions for making anything. It just says "watch less TV". It may be good advice, but it is not a DIY project. One is a recipe for bread. It may be wonderful and delicious bread, but it has nothing to do with being green. One is about making a suit out of a sleeping bag. I suppose this would allow you to turn down the heat, but that is a bit of a stretch, (besides, so would a sweater - and the instructable doesn't say anything about this being the reasoning).I don't mean to disrespect these fine instructables, I am just saying they are totally irrelevant to this specific contest. But not only are they in the contest, they have been in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place since voting opened 2 days ago. Who is voting for these entries, and why?

Go Green!

Just kidding!  Thanks for having me in your group.  It´s been awhile since I have been back to AA but it will always be one of my homes.  Please take time to check out my instructable for Agave Wood Personal Theater.  Hopefully, later today it will be approved for the Wood Contest (still waiting). If any of you visited the UM botanical garden this past summer you may remember their agave americana was in bloom after 80 YEARS of growth and waiting.  Here´s a link http://www.mlive.com/news/ann-arbor/index.ssf/2014/07/u-m_botanical_gardens_80-year-_1.html . My project was made using the same variety of agave and with the flower stalk and thorns.  In addition, I used nopal cactus (prickly pear) and a homemade wax to finish it.  Thats´s it.  It is 100% natural and vegan.  I know these words can make some squimish but for real when was the last time you could say that about technology? Please visit my project and feel free to comment:  I would love to find collaborators to work with from your organization when I visit AA in the summer. GO GREEN!  GO BLUE!

Grech contest winners declaration

Hi everyone, I recently won 1st prize in the green tech contest, and about a week after the win I contacted instructables to see if I needed any forms to recieve my prize. They said no. After two weeks and still no prize, I examined the rules and found I needed to sign a winners decleration form. Instructables made an error, and now I can't get ahold of them to give me the form. Can anyone out there help? I don't know how much longer I have before I'm unable to recieve my prize. Thanks so much, Joe J.

Paracord contest

Are you into paracord?  Are you interested in survial?  Are you prepared for when the "Shumer Hits the Fan"?  Well I am a avid reader of a wonderfuly informative site that you may have heard of.  Survivalblog.com.  Today they have partnered up with another site Campingsurvival.com with a paracord contest that I thought to share with everyone here.  The rules are simple and easy. In this giveaway, the winner will receive 6 ROLLS of 1000' paracord for FREE! We are giving these rolls away in the colors of black, coyote brown, desert sand, foliage green, olive drab, and royal blue! The retail value for all of these paracord rolls is roughly $225, but could be yours to own FREE! "We're assuming if you're here, you already love paracord, right? That's why we want you to describe to us your favorite paracord project, or list us some of your favorite uses for paracord and how you execute them. OR, if you've never used paracord but can't wait to start, what do you plan to use it for and how? what will be your use of choice? Remember, this is all personal opinion and knowledge ... there is no right or wrong answer!" Now by posting this I've probably shot my chances to win down the tubes but I feel the more that know about the contest, and both websites, the better. Find your way there and you also get a 5% off purchase coupon if you buy anything from them.  What a deal!

For Instructables, 2009 is a Green Year

Part of Instructables' mission is to inspire our community to create and share great projects. We do this though contests, theme months, and challenges that are seasonally appropriate, part of a bigger cultural trend, or simply areas where we want to see more great Instructables. This year we've decided that our overarching theme will be "Green."Our Green category focuses on the environment, reuse and recycling, and saving energy or making it in new ways. However, there's more to it. Green projects cut across all of our categories, and DIY is deeply and inherently green. When you make something yourself you often save materials, time, or money, while simultaneously generating less waste and creating a relationship with your project. Because of that relationship, you are more likely to cherish the final product, upgrade it, repair it, or even pass it along to someone else who will also cherish it. All of these actions involve making more with less, and that is fundamentally green. From my perspective as a life-long DIYer, I feel that it's time our culture took an active interest in all things green. I want to make sure the things we do are meaningful. We may have passed peak oil, but we can all work to ensure we pass "peak waste." So, to help inspire you, we'll be running a number of Instructables project contests all with a green theme. Some will be large, and some will be small -- we've even arranged sponsorship to give away Voltaic solar laptop bags and an Epilog laser cutter! To help you plan and get your projects started early and finished on time, we'll be publishing the timing of several of the contests scheduled during the first half of the year. Obviously, I think the best time to do a project is when you're most passionate about it, but I recognize everyone can benefit from a little extra motivation. Things are, of course, subject to change, but if you have even the slightest inkling of a green project, start now; especially since the real prize will be inspiring everyone that sees your work make their own lives a little bit greener.

Design a Green Gadget and Win Some Cash

Want to make the world a little greener and be rewarded for it? The folks at core77 are running a contest called the Greener Gadgets Design Competition. They're asking people to submit ideas that reduce environmental impact of consumer electrical devices.Three of the areas they want designers to consider are:1. Energy2. Materials / Lifecycle / Recycling3. Social & educational developmentThe contest sounds like a good one with the first prize winner taking home $2,500 and two runners up winning $1,000 each. Each entry needs three images and a 500 word description. The set of images must tell the story of the design at three scales:- one image showing context- one image showing object- one image showing details, exploded view, etc.You have to get the design in by January 27th 11:59pm EST. Try it! link

This machine burns energy year round. Is there or is there not another way to compost without a plug?

Number of Instructables in Contests

Ah, so I have Cybersitter on this computer (it's a family computer) and for some weird reason it won't let me see all of the "Be a Scientist!" contest rules nor all of the "Go Green!" rules. I'm sure that's the problem. Anyway, could some please tell me how many (and if you could, which ones) Instructables are in each contest, so I know what I'm up against. Thanks so much!

Why do some contests allow comments, while others appear not to? Answered

Perhaps it is just a glitch, but the Celestron Space Challenge and Green Living and Technology Challenge appear not to have space for comments on the contest page.  This is especially odd because I know for a fact that the Celestron Space challenge page used to have a comment section, because I left a comment there. Is this a case of my computer not displaying properly, or a small glitch with the website, or have some contest sponsors requested not to have comment sections in their challenges?  Thanks in advance.

New DIY Instructables contest: Going Green

Well, over the past week I was thinking about the environment... and now I'm watching that "6 degrees can changed the world" on NATGEO and it's scary...So I was thinking, why not a new contest? The GO GREEN!! Contest. The challenge would be to make DIY stuff that has to do with using less energy and making the planet better. An example of an entry wcould be a solar oven . What do you think? P.s. Have a waffle ;)

Green Electronics contest closing date/time clarification

Hello! I'd just appreciate some clarification on the entry submission closing date/time for the Green Electronics contest (hopefully I'm not missing something obvious). On the contests main page, it says "Closes Midnight May 31, 2014" but in the fine print in the contest (under "View Entries" and "Official Rules") it says "Contest closes for entries at 11:59pm PT, May 30, 2014." Shouldn't this be May 31 instead? For other contests, the close date is the same date as listed on the contests main page -- for example, the Made By Bees contest says it "Closes midnight June 30, 2014," and if you view the fine print in the contest it says "Contest closes for entries at 11:59pm PT, June 30, 2014." So, it looks like there may be a mistake for the listed closing date/time for the Green Electronics contest, but I could be just misunderstanding something, and I just want to make sure I know the exact closing date (since I may be cutting it close due to traveling). Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Top Green Transportation Instructables

Saving the planet and saving money, all while getting to where you need to go? The secret: green transportation. These Instructables show you how to travel to your next destination in a more environmentally-friendly way. Solar Powered Tricycle This solar-powered trike, a Judges' Prize winner of the Park Tool Bike Month Contest and a Second Prize Winner of the Discover Green Science Fair Contest, can go short distances without emitting any pollutants and never needs to be plugged in.   Electric Motorcycle If you want to convert an existing motorcycle into an electrically-powered one, you can try this 96-volt version--or you could opt for a different 72-volt model. Electric Scooter Upgrade Superpower a small electric scooter into a fast, furious traveling machine with this detailed power upgrade. Green Helmet Green transportation doesn't have to be limited to your vehicle: this LED, all-weather helmet runs on solar power. Bike Generator Biking is already a great way to travel, but it can be even more green if your bike lights are powered by your wheels as you move. Biodiesel Processor Instead of traditional fuel, biodiesel reuses waste oil and turns it into diesel. This biodiesel processor will help you successfully make your own biodiesel. And, of course, you can always create a new way (and Instructable) to travel without hurting the environment.

The Instructables Green Design Contest is starting on Earth Day!

In celebration of Earth Day and all things eco-friendly, we’re holding a Green Design Contest in partnership with TreeHugger!  Think “green” and submit an eco-friendly Instructable that uses sustainable materials or are energy efficient by design. For example, use recycled materials such as reclaimed lumber instead of new virgin growthwood. Or, choose to use renewable, responsibly sourced materials with minimal-to-no toxicity such as plant-based PLA plastic instead of oil-based ABS plastics.  If you’re designing something with electronics, consider how much power the circuit consumes, or even how much electricity is needed when it's not in use and in stand-by mode.  Also think through the end-of-life considerations of the product, such as making sure it’s easy to repair, and the individual parts can be reused or eventually recycled down the line. Come up with any project with these factors in mind, and you could win over $1,000 in prizes including a Voltaic Systems OffGrid Solar Backpack, ReadySet Renewable Energy Kit with Solar Panel and LED light, Nokero Solar Light Bulbs and a $500 REI gift certificate. As a special Judges’ Prize, we’re awarding anyone who uses one of Autodesk’s personal design and creativity applications, such as the Autodesk® 123D® 3D modeling apps or the Autodesk®SketchBook® easy-to-use drawing tools. The winner of this prize will also receive over $1,000 in prizes including a Voltaic Systems OffGrid Solar Backpack, ReadySet Renewable Energy Kit with Solar Panel and LED Light, Nokero Solar Light Bulbs and a $500 REI gift certificate. Your project may also become a learning resource to teach kids about sustainable design! For more information on green product design strategies, check out the videos and tutorials on the Sustainability Workshop that cover whole systems and lifecycle thinking, improving a product’s lifetime, lightweighting, and more. Contest is open 4/22 - 6/17.

Eco-freindly contest should only contain eco-freindly instructables

I noticed that in the new discover green science fair for a better planet contest, that there are unrelated instructables being posted. I've found that for a lot of contests unrelated instructables are posted so that more people will see the instructable. I know that everyone wants lots of people to find their instructable, including me, but posting unrelated instructables in contests that have nothing to do with what the instructable being posted is can be mis-leading and annoying. I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but if you do please post on this forum topic.

Free idea for the glowing contest

Here is a free idea for the glowing contest. I don't have the time or inclination to make it, so y'all can fight over who does it if you want.Basically, the idea is just a yellow or pale green led or series of leds that glow in the same pattern as female fireflies, in the theory that this will attract males to your garden or whatever. I know that you are supposed to get rid of extraneous light sources to attract fireflies, but this sounds like it could work to me. Feel free to do it, so long as you give me credit for the original idea in the first line of the ible.Doesn't anybody like it...even a little bit...?

Why can't I enter in the Photography contest?

I'm trying to enter in the "Camera and Photo Skills" contest, but it won't let me. I previously entered in the Green living contest, and currently, it's showing/telling me that that is the Instructable eligible for the contest that I can submit. I don't understand... am I not able to enter more than one contest? Thank you in advance.

Epilog Challenge: coming soon!

Psst - want to win a laser cutter?UPDATE: The Epilog Challenge has begun! Click here for details. We know you do, so we've teamed up with the fantastic people at Epilog Laser to bring you the Epilog Challenge: to make an awesome project with a green twist! The most incredible project will win an Epilog laser, and runners-up will get the next-best thing: use of a laser cutter, from our friends at Ponoko! Laser cutters are absolutely incredible tools - the sky (or your imagination) is the limit to what you can make. Now a peek at some details from the contest page:What's a green twist? In honor of environmentally-friendly design and our Green Theme for 2009, we want to see at least some clearly-described green component in the design, no matter how small. Simply explain some way your design is energy-efficient, reuses materials, or is helpful to the environment in some way. It doesn't have to be the primary theme for your project - we just want to encourage green thinking at all stages of a project, no matter how small. Whether you've picked LEDs over incandescent lights, made maximally efficient use of scarce resources, or dumpster-dived for materials, we want to hear about the little steps that contribute to permanent changes in behavior. So, inspired yet? Start thinking and building now, since the contest launches next week!
