Smoker Grills

Looking over the DIY's for smoker grills. Why not use your Weber Charcoal Grill with the hot plate ? Slots at the bottom can provide access to hot plate thermostat. You would need to make a tool, rod with end fitting to engage the thermostat knob. cord can exit the grill through one of the bottom slots.

CPU grill?

I recently decided to make a mini-grill (similar to the gas/charcoal ones found around the site), but I want to be able to do it with electricity. My plan is to overheat a CPU with a heatsink attached and allow the actual heatsink to be the grill. The only trouble is that I can't figure out from the pinout which pins I have to supply power to. Could anyone give me an indication as to which pins they are? Also, any other advice would be appreciated. =) CPU Pinout: http://download.intel.com/design/Pentium4/datashts/29864312.pdf

Grill forge

I have read most of the homemade forge instructables posted here, but I don't think any of them would work for me, because in my fascist city, you are not allowed to burn ANYTHING except for cooking purposes (technically even fire pits are illegal). My idea was to get a cheap grill lid that I can put on my charcoal grill. I would then cut holes in it for air flow (a hairdryer, of course) and an opening. Would this be an effective forge? I need it for detempering, annealing and tempering blades. Also, what fuel would you recommend using (as in, a certain kind of charcoal/wood)? I am making throwing knives and I have every other thing I need. I'll probably make a slideshow when I'm done, as making knives is a pretty well 'ibled subject.

How to synchronize the brightness of a grille-mounted neon tube/LED bar to a car's tach/speedo?

I have a 1997 BMW 328i, and I've been thinking about installing either a neon tube or a bar of LED's in the grille of the car to use at night (most likely not street legal, I know). I want the brightness of the tube/bar to be controlled by one of two things: The speedometer or the tachometer. I.e., if the speedometer is at 0 MPH, the light is off, and if the speedo is at 75 MPH, the light is fully on. Same thing with the tach, light off at 0 RPM, light fully on at redline. Unfortunately, I haven't the slightest idea how to use the car's computer or the gauges themselves to set up a control module for the light. If any of you has a good amount of knowledge about automotive gauges, I would appreciate your help!

Warning Light for Gas Grill

I get a text yesterday "Hi Dad, Are you going to be home soon? I left the house and forgot to turn off the grill." The grill is in the back yard, a few feet from the kitchen window. The grill connects directly to the house gas supply, so it will never run out of gas. I have found the grill on days after someone finished cooking. So far, we haven't burned down the house! I am searching for a product that would put a large blinking light on the kitchen window. It blinks when the grill is hot. It would remind me and my family to turn the grill off. Anyone know of a product that I could buy to do this? Seems like a natural Arduino project, I'm just short of time now to make it. Thanks, in advance. -Frank

how can i remove epoxied/glued on metal mesh from plastic speaker grilles?

How can i remove the little disk of metal mesh from the center of my plastic speaker grilles without splitting or badly damaging the plastic? I have component speakers for my project as thats all i could source, but for lack of space i want to effectively convert them back to coaxial by removing the mesh disk and mounting the tweeters in the resulting hole. EDIT: finally got to a computer where i could add images. In the meantime i decided the best way to solve my dilemma was attacking it with a dremel (clearly the safest option... ¬¬), against all odds this has appeared to have worked though...

Is it possible to convert a natural gas grill over to a propane grill?

We have a Jenn air natural gas grill that we are unable to use because the house we are currently in does not have a gas line. I've seen a lot of kits to go FROM propane to Natural, but not the other way around, which is what I need. Its a nice grill, I'd hate to let it go!

I'm converting an old gas char-Broil outdoor grill, now used as a charcoal grill, to an electric smoker. See details.

For my initial design I'm using junk box parts (electronic hobbyist/pack rat).  The heating element is a 120vac, 500w burner previously used as an electric charcoal lighter.  The grill cavity is 15"H x 14"D x 25"W, with two rack heights leaving room for the burner, water pan, and possibly lava rocks/bricks.     The question is about temperature control.  I understand 500w may or may not be enough.  I'm considering a DIY full wave open loop SCR control, as I have many of the parts.  The purely resistive load is @2.4-2.5 amps and should be able to be temperature controlled using  demand oriented transfer or phase angle firing w/diacs.  I want maximum control cheaply and am having trouble selecting an appropriate design.  I have larger current SCR's in case I need a larger wattage elment. What can contributors suggest?

How to make a propane burner using black iron pipe. Answered

I have a grill that has 4 burned out cast burners and I would like to make some new one for it myself.  Problem is, the instructable for making the black iron pipe burner seems to no longer be on here. Thanks! Thanks for the link.  Not the same as the instructable I saw before, but good stuff.  The one I saw months ago had horizontal cuts that made it ideal for a bbq grill burner replacement.  Would still love to see that one again. How do you keep YOUR grill grates from rusting over and your food from sticking?

I have tried a dozen different methods to prevent rust. Just cleaning it after every use with some grill cleaner then wire brushing alone before using again seems to keep the rust to a minimum at best on my original top grate which i believe is stainless, my bottom grate is the replacement flat one from Menards and that one doesn't rust yet but the black coating is quickly disappearing. My food sticks terribly to both grates no matter how much Pam I spray on them. What do you do for your grill? What's that one thing you do different that makes your neighbor pissed when he is out buying a new grate? At this point I'm thinking a good high speed drill w/ wire brush and then rubbing it with lard or some kinda congealed fat.   OOooooooohhh. I just had an AWESOME idea, I'm gonna go rub it down with my used bacon grease then maybe a warm water rinse so there's not enough to burst into flames later.

How do you cook a steak on a cast-iron grill pan? Answered

I bought a cast-iron pan with the little elevated parts to make it more like a grill since I would have to go use a community grill and usually I am just cooking for myself. I have tried different recipes and have either found it's way too done, or just not cooked right (and still cold and red in some spots). I think I am getting closer, by searing it at the highest temp my oven can get for a few minutes on each side, but for a decent cut (around an inch) it seems that isn't actually cooked, and then I put it in the oven for what I heard was a short amount of time (I like medium-rare to medium steaks) and it was very well done... Any one have any recipes that works well for them? Also how do I not fill my house with smoke when I try to sear the steak?

How to keep FLIES away from your food!

I discovered this little "trick" (quite by accident) when I was grilling last week.  Flies do not like onions!  A few slices of raw, sliced red onion in the immediate vicinity of your food will keep disgusting flies from dining on your edibles. Onions are so effective, I'm tempted to make a pair of hoop earrings out of 'em!   Maybe onion perfume? oh, the possibilities! ;-D

I have a rusted outdoor firepit grill. Are there any rust removal products that are flame resistant?

We use it to cook hotdogs, smores and such. I am just worried that something may catch fire while using it later. Most products that I have been reading about say not to spray anywhere near the inside. My pit is a bowl type with about a six inch lip on top. The whole bowl and top are rusted and I paid a lot of money for it and would rather not have to buy a new one if I can restore this one. Any ideas?

Want to use a pet door as garage vent.

I am a renter and have a 2 car garage with a pet door in between. The garage stays pretty hot even with a fan running. I needed to vent some of this hot air. I thought I could take a box fan and design some sort of ducting to allow the hot air to be sucked out and cooler air in and also prevent the pets from escaping. I figured I could remove the plastic grill and attaching the duct to the screw holes left from the grill removal. Not so great with geometry but needed to slope the duct box doen to the rectangular shape of the pet door. Any thoughts?
