I want to make or buy a small, single board computer similar to gumstix, capable of running tinyxp. if this is possible, can i make it run a single .exe program at boot, when a command is entered?

Hi - I've got a business idea that requires hardware and I can't build the thing myself. I'll write the software for it, but I need assistance building the circuitry. The circuitry involved would include a temp sensor, R/F communications module, photodiode, memory (possibly micro SD), controller, and a timer in a very small form factor (about the size of a cigar tube). I want to build a laptop inside my old gameboy SP. I have considered the beagleboard, gumstix, flashcarts, and even the ITX mini. So far, I think the beagleboard wins, because it's self contained and just the right dimensions. Is there any other sort of board I should consider before I blow $100 on a beagle board? It has to fit withing 3"x 3" and preferably run linux or windows. Thanks for your ideas! -WiLL

I'm working on a project that requires the playing of short videos based on some physical conditions. The microcontroller and more general electronic end of stuff I'm fine with. What I haven't yet figured out is the mechanics of the video player mechanism. I want to use digital video stored on removable media (preferably CF or similar memory card storage). The videos will have no sound, be black & white, and probably low resolution (640x480 being the max size). I had originally planned to use an embedded linux system (gumstix verdex or some such thing) hooked to a TFT display. With some software running on the computer, it shouldn't be hard to control with serial communication. However, I'm not sure how well (if at all) mplayer would run on the Verdex. Also, if there's a cheaper solution I'd rather take that. I guess this post is to see what my options are. I know there are mp3 decoders on a chip (like the STA013) that produce output that you feed more or less directly into a DAC. Is there such a thing as a hardware mpeg video decoder (or divx, or quicktime, or avi, or whatever?) If something like that existed, I could connect the CF reader straight through my uC to the hardware decoder and pipe it out directly. Either to LCD or CRT (depending on which signal is easier). So, does this exist? Is it feasible? Thanks,

It's time I turn yet again to the forums for advice, this time on recommended robot brains! [Serious] I have a project for a class requiring design, construction and programming of something. More than half of my fellow students are doing clocks of some sort, be they binary or nixie tube. A friend of mine is doing a holonomic robot, and my plan was to do a walking robot, based on ideas like the WowWee robosaurus, using a simple tail and head to balance and few motors to run it in comparison to any conventional biped. As far as servos, I was hoping to use something like the HerculeX or other serially connected servo, so I can just daisy chain the few I would need and simplify the wiring, as well as get experience with serially addressing things. Planned sensors are 2-4 IR rangefinders, 2-4 wire whiskers and one tilt switch to turn it off if it tips over. Sensors I'd love to add would be something like a super basic camera for simple machine vision if I ever learn to code that well, but I doubt that will be the case; and the LIDAR thing from the Neato XV-11 which is again unlikely. Things I was looking at for super basic use included: Arduino, HC11 MC (backplane type), BASIC Stamp, PIC. For a little more complexity I was seriously considering things like the Freescale Tower ARM, Gumstix or other. I'd love to have the serial servos, sensor assemblies and the camera and have integration with Robot operating system through an onboard computer, but I have no idea what to use to setup ROS or what would be best, or if my plan of parts to use is even good enough. In other words, what ideas should I throw out as impossible or what would I need for say, ROS use? Ideally i want to do a semi autonomous robot, so that i don't have to manually direct it everywhere, but I'd still be keeping an eye on it when it's running so it doesn't break something. If I understand ROS correctly I can use an external computer to control it, but I can also let it be autonomous? Coding math and logic in the machine language for a Z80 computer doesn't really prepare for robot building, although the class is basically a teach programming basics and throw you into the deep end.
