Wiping a hard drive

I recently got into taking apart old computers that no longer work (and by no longer work I mean really screwed up and not worth keeping) and see what I can salvage.  I found this 80 gigabyte hard drive from a Windows Desktop computer, and i was wondering how i could wipe it without having to put it back in the computer, because it's all in pieces at the moment. If they uploaded correctly, i have pictures of the hard drive and all of it's info. Also, could some tell me the official name of it please? Thanks. :D

Hard drive to usb?

I am a long time follower, and, if I am not mistaken, first time poster.  Please bear with me... I have looked about the site quite a bit, but I have found no solution to my question.  Heck, I don't know if it is even possible!  I have a few hard drives from older computers that have went the way of many older electronics do... :( ...and I want to do something with them, besides leaving them about to collect dust.  Is it at all possible to connect them to a usb port WITHOUT a hard drive enclosure?  I was kinda thinking about connecting a usb cable to the ide port, but will it work, and to which pins do I apply wires/solder? If this is possible and someone knows how to do it, please, PLEASE get back to me!  Thanks so much!

Hard drive motors?

I need to get a harddrive motor up and running, it has four pins for power, does anyone know exactly what these pins or which is which, the motor is from a harddrive from an old xbox, i worked hard get this wretch out all the way down to the motor, honestly microsoft should build bomb shelters, and the casing of the hard drive is pretty tough, on of the boards on it needed some friendly persuasion from a hacksaw and a hammer after I removed the apparent retaining screws, all 7 million of them, by the way I may do an instructable on how to open an old Xbox with nothing more than a swiss army knife, and it doesn't get damaged at all. To figure out the pins is all I need, left to right arrangement would do I have figured out which way up the bottom is but the crazy hieroglyphis in microscopic size reveal little about the connections,

Reformatting a hard drive? Answered

Hi there. I know most of you reading this are thinking of the simple process that is reformatting a hard drive, and are prepared to offer me an obvious and somewhat novice explanation as "right click > format...". Please don't, this is not the case. I recently acquired an external hard drive previously used as a Direct TV Dvr. The hardware and everything is fine, and my computer recognizes it as a USB Mass Storage Device. However, the disk itself is in a format my Windows-based computer cannot recognize, read, or understand, and - as a result - does not acknowledge it exists. I need to figure out how to reformat this to NTFS / FAT32 to use on a windows machine. Also note, as a result of the lack of recognition of the disk, I can only guess its drive letter. CMD does not recognize it at all - I have tried mounting disks E - Z with no result. If needed, I have access to a Macintosh, but that is preferably the last resort as it resides about an hour away from where I am currently.

Distinguish glass hard disk platters from aluminum without marring the reflective surface? Answered

I have hundreds of hard disk platters from disassembled hard drives.  Some are made of glass, some are made of aluminum.  The glass ones, when flexed, shatter into thousands of razor shards which screech across the room. I would like to avoid that in the future.  I only want to use the aluminum ones, but I don't want to mar the reflective surface. I've thought of weighing them, but the platters some from many manufacturers and eras and so the weights won't be consistent.  Magnets don't attract glass or aluminum. Does glass float? (I'm guessing no.)  Is the reflective surface transparent? (I'm guessing no again, but maybe a strong light would work?) There has to be a way....

Just 24 more hours..

And this week is over.. I'm about to whine about life, so back out now if you like. What a hell of a week, I started going to UCF monday. Now, admittedly, I'm happy about that, even though it's terribly stressful. But that's not the problem, really. No, would you believe that monday I bit into a brownie at work and cracked a molar on a nut? So my first day of school was accompanied by horrible pain. Followed by a dental crown on tuesday. Yeah that's not that bad, so I'll add in that my wife's truck needed a new differential on thursday (somewhat more expensive than a calculus book). And today? The washing machine broke. Spent three hours tearing it down, it's a goner. Leaking pump, with horrible grinding noise, broken balance strut, and no power to the motor. Only six years old too. And worst of all i didn't win the explicative deleted bike. That's an almost $2500 outlay this week for broken things.. Oh yeah one more really irritating thing, I finished up my A.A. and received my diploma this week, in a big flat envelope stamped all over "Do not bend", which the mailman folded in half and stuffed in the mailbox. I'll probably read this in the morning and decide I'm a self absorbed SOB and delete it. ;-)

Emotional Whipsaw Just a personal Blog type post.

This post serves no purpose but to allow me to verbalize my last week, read at your own peril. Man what a strange 10 days it's been. Ten days ago I was going into final with a statistical fail in both my classes. If you're not familiar with grading practices in grad school, a C is a fail. If your GPA drops below 3.0 you lose your eligibility for financial aid, if you get more than two C's you're out of the program. Finals didn't feel like they went well. You can imagine how I felt waiting for grades, here I was, no job, looking like I was going to flunk out. Well, grades came out Thursday, I got B's, not brilliant, but it keeps me in school. That felt pretty good. Friday, I took my wife and her coworker lunch, something I do once a month just for fun.  At least this time I could deflect questions about the eternal job hunt with talk about grades. Got home from lunch and the phone rings......... " Mr.Animal, after a review of the applicants, we consider you the best candidate for the position of..... at....... and you like to extend an offer of employment." Woot! I'm on top of the world, nothing could bring me down.... Except... Except, My wife's dog looks funny, she's all hunched up and whimpering.  I've had enough animals to know that means a back injury.  It's 5, I call the vet, we discuss the maximum I can dope her up and make an appointment for the morning. Except, it's pretty clear by 8pm that she's in so much pain, that she can't even sit or lay down. Have you ever spent 12 hours trying to support the weight of a 60 lb dog? It's a novel experience, by 4 am I was near delirious. After an eternity, morning came. Doc diagnoses a slipped disk. Shoots her full of morphine and gives us a prescription for valium.  She can actually lay down when we get home.  36 hour she's much improved, but has a long way to go. TL;DR Passed classes got job dog sick

Thermite Destruction of Hard Drive

There are many ways to get rid of the data on a hard drive, but igniting thermite on top of it is probably the most extreme and ridiculously secure. Here, the thermite is set in a clay pot over a computer case and ignited from below to demonstrate a method where you'd want to destroy everything... right away! You know, because you're a super-spy and stuff and the other guys could break in at any time while you're surfing the web. Thermite hard drive destructionvia Gizmodo

Hard drive price confusion

Looking to create a small form factor PC to fit on the back of a monitor and while searching for a hard drive on Newegg noticed that the lowest price 2.5" internal desktop hard drive was $120 and not even 150GB ( http://tiny.cc/01012 ) while a 2.5" USB powered portable hard drive that is 1TB is $90 ( http://tiny.cc/01024 ), these numbers just are not adding up, couldn't I just disassemble the portable hard drive. Not sure if I am missing something important, Help is greatly appreciated!

Reusing an old hard drive

I was recently disecting an old laptop (HP, roughly 6-8 years old) trying to find a use for the parts, as i have had very many replacements since I had stopped using that one. I removed a 10GB IBM hard drive. From the picture, you can see that it has a total of 44 pins. I am not sure if each pin goes to the same destination as the one opposite to it. i was wondering if there was any way that I could convert this into an external drive that I could attach via USB or something similar. If you have any ideas, let me know. Id love to find a use for this instead of just throwing it away.

Hard drive won't mount?

So, I've had a toshiba 2.5" SATA 250 GB internal HD for a while now. I got it from an old toshiba laptop. I finally got an enclosure for it, and I plugged it in. windows made the sound it makes when you plug something in, and in device manager the usb port said a usb mass storage device was plugged in, but it didn't show up in my computer, nor did it show up in disk management. I searched the net for hours trying to find the problem, reading about how you might need to assign it a letter in disk management, and other more "grim" outlooks on how it might be dead. I listened to it closely, and heard it making very VERY soft ticking noises at a regular rate. I immediately thought the worst, and came to the conclusion that it was dead. The next day, I decided to take it into school with me, as my teacher was pretty smart when it came to computers, and maybe she could provide the tiniest shred of hope. She asked me to plug it into one of the school's desktops. I plugged it in and...it began running like normal. It showed up  on my computer, and showed the correct disk size, as well as a document I'd put on there long ago. I couldn't believe it!  When I got home, I plugged it into my computer, but surprisingly encountered the same problem. I decided to do a bit of experimenting, and I started plugging it into various computers we had around the house, and lined up all the facts I had: It didn't work on my laptop. (runs windows 7 home premium) It DID work on my mom's laptop. (also runs windows 7 home premium) It didn't work on my old desktop. (runs windows xp home edition, but I don't trust it. It's been acting very weird lately) It DID work on my school's desktop. (runs windows 7 enterprise) It DID work on my sister's laptop. (runs windows 7 home premium) I was stumped, to say the least. Can any of you tell me WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON?!?!?! The strongest lead I have is that it might not be working correctly on my computer because the usb ports can't provide enough power to mount it. But if my laptop can't mount it, why should my mom's or my sisters be able to? Please provide any other theories you may think are plausible too!
