Cutting Rope at a height

Hey guys, I need to cut down a banner on the second story on a side of a building. The banner is held by 4 string/ropes at each corner and I do not have access to a ladder. What would you suggest is the best way to do this? I thought of putting a scissors on the end of a long stick and devising a string pulley system to operate the scissors from the bottom. Like have the scissors open and position them with the rope between the shears. Then I would just pull on the string to snap them shut. What do you think? Any better ideas?? Thanks!

How to control the height of Quadcopter?

Hi, Is there a way to control the height of the quadcopter using the MPU 6050. I know that the sensors i.e. accelerometers and gyroscope measure the orientation of the copter and stabilizes them but how would u measure or like control the height of the copter? Is the controlling of height depends on the IMU unit of completely on the throtle provided to the motors?

3 inches of pain

Does anyone remember Gattaca? Well that movie explored the possibility of limb extensions in a fantastic manner. Apparently there's a vanity medical procedure to do this called Limb Lengthening. I'm not sure if anyone in the US does it, but for 100,000+ dollars you can add a few painful inches to your legs in Cairo. This procedure seems reasonable for midgets, or other deformities but for people 5'6" you'd think that this surgery is pure vanity. But that may not be true, a survey of CEO's of fortune 500 companies shows that they are on average ~6' tall. Another research study that followed thousands of people from birth to adulthood shows that an inch of height above the average of 5' 9" is approximately equal to a salary increase of $789 a year. What do you think? Is this vain, or a good way to get around prejudice against average/short people._BGvia:boingboing.net and http://men.style.com/details/features/landing?id=content_6838

I'm looking for a simple way to raise/lower an existing desk for seated/standing pc work.

This is the closest thing I've found yet: http://www.ergospec.com/products/retro_lift_systems/retrofit.html I have been tinkering with a crank/cable idea, maybe counter-weighted; nothing good yet.  It has to raise/lower about 18 inches smoothly and with good stability.  Manual cranking is preferred - electric motors or hydraulics seem too complex/expensive.  Thanks! Just uploaded a photo of the desk. One more note - if I were stating from scratch, I might look at one of these: http://www.geekdesk.com/.  But I like this desk, just want a bit more flexibility (maybe even slide a treadmill under one day if I can raise it even further)

Can I control the height of quadcopter using MPU 6050?

Is there a way that I can control the height of the quadcopeter using the MPU 6050? I know that the accelerometer and the gyroscope are used to measure the angular acceleration and the orientations respectively and stabilise the flight. But how would you measure the height of the quadcopter?

When Toast Flies

It is not often that I find something so useless so awesome. Freddie Yauner's toaster pops your toasted bread way up into the air with high-pressure carbon dioxide. He is going to try to break his own world record of the highest toaster pop, which currently stands merely at the height of his ceiling. An added bonus of this: if he pops it to the right height, he may be able to avoid the curse of the toast always falling butter-side down.Link

ideas for a dog carrier, adjustable height or telescoping

I want some ideas that you may have for a carrier. background: I want to bring my Dog on an airplane but he can't ride in cargo because there is a summer ban on dogs during hot months. I must fly before the end of the ban. The airline will allow a dog in the cabin in a soft carrier, if the dog and carrier are less than 10kg. My dog is 7kg so the carrier can be up to 3kg. It must be 27cm high 40cm wide and 55 cm long or smaller problems: the foot print is fine for my dogs they could lay down comfortably, but the height is small. I want to make a telescoping carrier so it can fit under the seat on the plane, but can open up for comfort in the airport and when moving. Any ideas are welcome and I'll post it as my first instructable once I make it thanks http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/airport/baggage/pets.html

Pendulum length to falling body height ratio? Answered

How long does a pendulum need to be for its time period to be equal to the time it takes for a falling body to drop from a distance equal to the pendulum's length? A general equation as well as a specific solution for Earth surface gravity would be appreciated. With this, I would be able to establish standard time and distance units even if trapped on an island without any instruments other than what I can make from available materials. I'm sure I'm the only one tired that happening so often. Of course, I'd still need a way to establish the gravitatoinal constant if stranded on another planet...

Help/suggestions/advice for loft bed at a height of 2.50 m !

Hello everybody, my name is Susanne. I recently moved into a very small but very high apartment in Barcelona. The ceilings in the entire apartment still have the original beams and are approx. 4.50-4.75 m. I am looking for suggestions/advice/help on how high to build. I have been doing a lot of research online already and have been unable to find any loft bed at a height of more than 2.00 m but would love to hear from anybody who has ever had a similar project or can think of a good way to work with height as oppose to space. In addition, I cannot seem to be able to find pictures let alone plans of platforms large enough for a king mattress and then some. I am really looking forward to any suggestions you might have!!!!All the best from beautiful Barcelona, Susanne

How can I make a (relatively) simple adjustable height desktop?

When I was working in tech support many moons ago, the office had these great adjustable desks. If you wanted to stand up while working you could raise the keyboard and monitor up to a standing height and if you got tired of standing, they would lower down. There was a motor that did the raising and lowering on those desks. I'd like to make something similar in the simplest way possible. Bonus points if the solution can be placed on top of an existing desk and still work.

Question: Best materials to build a meter height elevator (3 floors)

I have a challenge, and that is, to build a 3 floor elevator. The main frame was built using 2mm carbon steel sheet and rivets, and painted blue. The frame, 950mm height, 250mm width. I thought of using doors (two halfs, opening to opposite sides). What I'm lacking is: • the motors to open the doors (already have one for the cabin, which is more sheet); how strong they need to be• the doors; more sheet? They will be on the main frame. And, should the doors slide on a U like tube to prevent them from woobling? or use gear racks weld to the lower part of the door? And, how would I join the doors with the motors, pulleys and belts?. I'm having stupid amounts of difficulty to view how I am to make the doors work. This will run on grafcet, already done too. Just really only need to assemble the doors and its motors.

Variable height desk: replace hand-crank with some kind of electrical motor

Hi, First time poster here, sorry if I'm misplacing this. I have near zero knowledge of engines, though I understand physics, at least from my civil engineering college years. I bought a variable height desk from IKEA (Skarsta model), which has a 12cm radius hand crank (see photos) that ends in a hexagon shape, h=6mm (so diameter around 6,93mm). This hand crank works fairly easily, needing little effort to crank the table up, with ~45kg of weight on it (it's supposed to go up to 50kg). So basically I was thinking if there was a easy, cheap and safe way of automating this with some sort of electric motor (I even looked up those Lego Technic motors!). Any suggestions? Thanks

How might I make a loft bed where the bed height is adjustable?

I want to make a loft type bed for my daughter, with a desk / dressing table underneath. However, she is still quite young, so I dont want the loft bed too high at night. I want to be able to move the bed platform up and down to a high 'out of the way' position for use in the day and a low position for sleeping (sort of  'just above the desk top position') But I obvioulsy need to be able to move the bed up and down on a daily basis, so I need something to achieve this. I am looking at what mechanisms people might think suitable - tracks with linear actuator or gas struts perhaps? with obviously some sort of locking device. Any ideas guys?

How can I extend the height of my 4' chain link fence somewhat attractively? Answered

I have a 3 month old Pharaoh Hound who can (when she's an adult) jump up to 6' high. We live in a wooded area with lots of little animals like squirrels and rabbits. I'm afraid she'll catch sight of something and hop over the fence and take off into the woods. I don't really want to do an electric fence unless it's a last resort. She doesn't stay out for long periods, mostly just to go to the bathroom and when we're hanging out. Bushes are also not an option because A) I don't have the money to buy ones that are tall enough and fill the entire length (about 120') and B) There's gravel around the fence and not good for planting. What do you think?

Why are there few or no clouds in the stratosphere? Answered

The stratosphere (STRAT  uh sfihr) lies above the troposphere. It extends from about 11km to 50km above the earth. In the lower part of the stratosphere, the temperature does not change with height. But, in the upper part , temperature increases with height.  At 50km, the temperature is about 7o/c.          Air in the stratosphere is dry and thin, and there are very few or no clouds.

Dog crate/protection/divider for boot of estate car - lower height to be covered by parcel shelf cover?

Hi there I'm looking to come up with a solution for the boot of my car so any suggestions you can come up with are welcome!  http://www.rica.org.uk/sites/default/files/cars/Boot/5035.jpg  I have a Labrador and would like to have a divider/container for him in this boot, so effectively one side of it would be 'his'.  I would like to have the parcel shelf/cover able to be down as per the photo so that anything in the other section can be hidden from prying eyes.  The crate we have at home is too tall (26") and to get a crate with the right height (20") the crate would be much smaller in length and width and wouldn't be suitable for the dog especially when travelling long distances. We had a pen for the garden when he was a pup but it's too tall also. the dividers you can buy require a backseat grill effectively to be purchased alongside it so it attaches properly - adding cost and also losing my parcel shelf/cover capability. Any suggestions folks? Thanks in advance!

Video camera pedestal

I want to know how these camera pedestals work, see example here: http://www.vinten.com/product/quartz-one-pedestal Has anyone tried to build something similar? What I would like to achieve, is simply a tripod system where the camera can stay level at the height I choose, and it should be easy to change the height without loking the center column. Is this a very hard thing to do?

how do i make a column with concrete?

Molds, iron/wire gauge, how deep I must sink them in the dirt (semi-soft soil) and how it is supposed to be the foundation. Also the "specifications" for the concrete like which and how much sand and gravel to use with the cement note: they must have out side the ground 3 to 3,5 meters in height, that is about 10 to 12 feet in height
