Ok, so hho has become the new fad in the mpg race, but is it really effective? Conservation of energy dictates that the energy required to separate water in to its base components is equal or greater to the energy released during its reconstitution. The key to making HHO a viable source of additional fuel would be utilizing the waste heat from the engine to provide the electricity needed. TEG's + exhaust manifold + water = ? Discuss!

One of my friends asked for my help for a project for his school expo. He wants to run a car on water and I have told him not to be too optimistic. when I googled it all I found was that it was not possible(as of now), but no other detail. I did stumble upon an old episode of myth busters in which they came to the conclusion that a car can run on hydrogen, but they were unable to provide enough hydrogen from their electrolysis setup, however, I noticed that the HHO generator created by king of random produces way more gas then theirs. so I wanted to know your opinion and knowledge on this matter and whether this can work or not.

Hello Everyone, I recently found out about Sodium Hydroxide as an electrolyte. I have read that it does not affect the electrodes like salt or baking soda and it does not create any weird gasses like chlorine. The main reason for using stainless steel electrodes is to prevent this corrosion, but since sodium hydroxide does not create this corrosion, can I just use the much cheaper iron or regular steel as the electrode plates? Thanks in advance

What is the simplest method for someone like me who has very little experience in electronics and a low budget, to achieve a high current output for a hho cell? This is for a hho cell and torch so the voltage must be low and the current must be high. Basically what Im looking for is a cheap and easy way to create 3v -5v together with 10-100 amps. Are there any specific household appliances that can put out this current? Not car batteries, car battery chargers or wall sockets. Also is this enough to kill you or just give you a bad shock?

I just made mine by aluminum (because I don't have any stainless steel). Then I realize I can't choose a conductor (normally, they used NaOH or KOH but I can't, because they react with aluminum). And when I use salt, a thick gooey grey layer appear. What I should use or how can I prevent this layer forming?

I'm keen on starting a serious discussion group of folks who share my enthusiasm for HHO alternative fuel generators. Thus far there's only been one Instructable (Serge) and loads of YouTube videos, but most other sites either want to sell you plans or sell you a retail device. I'd like to start a club of sorts with folks who want to 'roll their own' but perhaps lack some of the electronics or other material fabrication techniques. We could help each other design & build stuff (like an hho generator for you car) and then post the how-to's here on Instructables. Anybody interested?

I am not sure how or where to hook the generator into a car, and I have also heard that it is important to use a pulse generator into the unit to control power flow does anyone know where I can find more detailed concerning the installation into an engine, as well as information on how to build, or buy a pulse generator?

Okay; two questions regarding electrolysis. What should i use as an electrolyte? When I used salt, I got Hydrogen and Chlorine, and I want Hydrogen and Oxygen. Next, What should I use for my anode and cathode? I've heard of carbon rods and titanium rods, but i don't know where to get them from.?

Greets, Can someone please make an "Idiots illustrated step-by-step guide to making/ and safely using a HHO blowtorch." I am into metal sculpting, and I'd rather use HHO, than some explosive gas (methane/butane) in my house. Proven tech, or not. Regardless of how "inefficient" it may be - I'd like to be able to see it for myself - as I'm sure others would be too. Many thanks.

A while back I had made a HHO generator or electrolysis device. I had run it a little bit and then left it for about two months in a bucket because it had a small leak. Salt crystallized on the outside some and when I opened it, there was a large glob of some milky white jelly like substance, any ideas?

I've seen and built HHO generators before, and have been able to build a rig that produced a flame big enough for welding... before it fell apart. But I'm having trouble with the funds and time to get thinking and do some real engineering. To put it simply i've hit a brick wall with this idea and i thought Instuctables.com might be a good place to discuss my problems and get other people thinking too. my plan was to create a wet cell hydroxy generator with hard drive platter, why hard drive platters? because they are plated in platinum.... the best substance known to man for electrolysis. I just want sombody to share my ideas with that wont say somthing like " uhhh what's a hard drive?". Please help, I'd love to get info and opinions from sombody other than google once in a while.

So folks I think I'm gonna give the water-into-OxyHydrogen-into-fuel booster gag a try. There's a couple of shady ibles on the subject, so I wanted a little more professional input. I'd like to go about this all scientific like so my questions kinda boil down to:Measure / calculate the amount of air used by my car in one second (in volume)What's the best catalyst to useMeasure the amount of hydrogen and oxygen produced in one second (in volume)Accurately measure fuel efficiencyI met a chap who did it to his car, I'll try to wrangle some out of him. Bit of an interesting blighter, 50-60ish black chap with dreadlocks from Gloucester.I'll be giving it a try in a less then optimal test vehicle however. Carburated '94 Buick Century, V6. I'm sure the idea would "theoretically" work better in a smaller engine. If this system works at all (upwards of 10% increase in efficiency), I'll make an improved version and iblify it. The car will be used on primarily the same route, a good mix of highway and 40 ish speeds, and I'll leave the air conditioner off full time so's not to get false readings.Any input plz? I'll post some pics of my brave victim car later.

Reproduced verbatim from The Fortean Times issue 249, republishing from FT35JUNE 1979On the 15th a demonstration of a "revolutionary" energy device took place at an undisclosed location in the UK. Iowerth Thomas, 58 a Welsh inventor, hoped to interest both government energy officials and an Arab consortium. Mr Thomas had been experimenting since 1936 with ways to make petrol engines burn more efficiently. His "bolt-on" device promised between 25 and 40 per cent efficiency using "the electrolysis of tap water", plus a cleaner exhaust. The government scientists' response - that it was impossible - spurred Mr Thomas to demonstrate it for them. He reported to the motoring correspondent of the Daily Telegraph that his stationary engine ran for 112 seconds with his device and for 77 seconds on the same amount of petrol without it. The usual objection to electrolytic systems is that the energy needed to run them is greater than that produced. With some sarcasm, New Scientist sniffed that the device needed to be much smaller than the room-size contraption Jones used. What really stoked their scorn was Thomas's reply when asked how it worked: "It's beyond me," he said. That was the last we heard of him and his promising device. How has this technology improved in the last 30 years?L

I have an electrode made of 304 SS that when hooked to a 12V automotive battery draws about 80A. That is WAY too much amps, and I want to boost the output voltage to 36 or more, and reduce the amps as low as possible. I plan to drive the flyback with a square wave generator. What do I need to know to wind my own coil: what core, size of wire for primary and secondary and how many turns of each? Thanks in advance. I've already found that an ignition coil will not work, unless you know of some way to adapt one so that it will.

I have been looking at electrolysis a lot, and recently made one, but because I used copper wire it corroded straight away. I have been looking at alternatives and titanium sticks out to me. Currently cheap, $10 for 16 feet, and the conductivity is fairly good along with the corrosion resistance (high). However, I haven't been able to find very much of anything stating that titanium works or doesn't. Does anybody have any input, thanks!

Hi! I would like to make, buy, or find, a low voltage high amperage transformer to power an electrolosis cell. I like playing with the hydrogen-oxygen gas produced. From what I have read, I only need about 1.8 volts for electrolosis, so I'd like a circuit or transformer that could take the power from preferable a 9 volt battery and convert it to 1.8v at as high an amperage as I can get. Thanks : )

I saw an article today on how HHO generators are just a scam. There are of course many scams associated with it, but I have yet to test the whole thing myself so I have yet to form a solid opinion on the whole thing. One of the biggest arguments is that based on the laws of thermodynamics, the same energy is required to split the water as is released when they recombine. This is true, but couldn't there be other benefits to the whole thing which are being ignored. If that statement was true wouldn't eco-boost engines be a scam. The turbocharger can't just create energy can it. The exhaust which spins up the turbo causes back pressure on the engine right. Then there are friction and slip as well. It seems very lossy right, but it works. It isn't a scam. The same goes for a supercharger, the same energy of the added compressed air is taken from the engines drive train. Now I understand that the compressed air causes a better burn similar to mixing KNO3 with sugar vs just burning it in plain air. But what if you mix gunpowder and sugar, why is that any different. I feel like this analogy accurately displays what is going on in both cases, and I feel like there could be an argument for the benefits of HHO. Again I have no experience in the subject yet, but it all seems reasonable. The HHO isn't being used as a fuel, it is being used as a booster which pulls more energy, more efficiently from the petrol.

Hi all, I've been wanting to build a simple hydroxy generator for using it as a torch. I've seen about 500 gazillion tutorials and alot of them talk abour having 3-5 neutral plates between each positive and negative plate. What is the point of this? Isn't it better to have all plates connected as electrodes? Also, what's the difference between having 5 neutral plates between positive and negative plate, and just having the positive and negative plates installed farther apart (same distance as if you had the neutrals between them)? Thanks!

For something I am in the process of designing, I need a valve that can be connected to a high pressure source and will allow the gas from the high pressure side to to flow into a sealed container on the other side until a pre-set pressure is reached. It should then shut off. The system used to do this should also be able to handle a very high pressure spike (possibly even the type of compressed pressure wave generated during a super-sonic combustion / detonation) on the sealed container side. If you can provide a diagram or the name of a type of valve or even just a description of how this could be done it would be appreciated. No computer controlled stuff please. ##################### The answer I have discovered is to use a regular diaphragm-type pressure regulator. ######################

Is it possible to take a 12V lead acid battery, remove the acid from all 6 cells and replace with water and connect to a 12V power source, and get H2 and O2 gasses bubbling out the top? The reasoning behind this question is that the 12 volt lead acid batteries are made of 6 cells, each producing about 2 volts, connected in series. If instead of producing 12V we could (by removing the acid and replacing with salt water) feed it 12V, wouldn't we have 6 hydrolysis cells running at 2V each? 6 cells of 2V hydrolysis cells is nothing new, but has anyone of you ever tried to convert a lead acid battery before? Is the lead going to be any good as electrodes? Will the lead oxidize too fast? Will the there be any chemical reaction that would change the produced gasses? Should I be worried about lead poisoning for even typing these words? Should I be asking anything else I haven't thought about? Thanks!

Ok so i have this edea to make a small two stroke engine out of paper and run it off of hydrogen witch i will make with a large battery and water like a fuel cell. But anyways ive allready built the piston and teh crankshaft and the encasing well most of it but i wanted to get some opinions on it can anyone help me? i should put on here that its not just a single sheet of paper thick um each component is 10 sheets of paper glued and compressed over 24 hours but also im thinking that if i lined the cylinder with tin foil it would stop the paper from burning and also the explosion will be very very micro sized probably 2x times smaller than a fire cracker and the compression will not be much of a problem because it works more off of the just the force of the pop. Ok so um the paper is yes just ordinary printer paper you can get at walmart for $2.50 but i cut out the shape i am making about 10 to 12 times sometimes 15 even and glue them all then stick it under a couple boxes of clay i have that are about oh well idk but allot of wheight and when its done each peace is about 1/6 of and inch thick so basicly about the thickness of chipboard.

So I am trying this process of converting my big old van (92 - full size windowless version) into a green machine... Unfortunatly i know little about cars... I am already installing the HHO system myself to make it Part Hydrogen, now I want to add some electricity into the mix as well. I already have a HUGE back space that I don't even use. if it was deisle I would just use the back space for a vegi -converter... but I am thinking of using that space for some batterys (although I know those can get expensive) I was also thinking since I will have the batterys there... I would also make a little turbine on the roof, so i am creating a perpetual energy ( I know how to do this one)... My question is: How hard would be to ADD electric power to my van without losing my current gas/hho mix power. Is it possible? Its not really about "gas prices" or anything, I just feel like everytime i fill up my tank I am: 1) Buying a terrorist a gun 2) killing 30 trees Because I am really bad about being coherent here is my questions to you: - What would be the best option to add to my van after my HHO to make my van MORE green? - If its electric, can i add that with my current (to-be) HHO/Gas? - What could i use all that empty space for? Thanks guys :)

The output is easy to test when just checking with a submerged bottle with the generator running on its own without being hooked to a vacuum source. The generator will put out substantially more volume under vacuum than when not. How do you check for output volume when under vacuum? Pylgram
