Orchid Care Questions

So I have been given this orchid - in bloom... I really don't know how to care for it.... right now, it's been on my kitchen bar for about a week getting fluorescent light. My father grows a bunch of orchids at home, but he just sort of "plants" them somewhere an forgets about them - which has worked very well for him :p Any care recommendations? Is there anything particularly wrong with cutting the flower stem off (if no, where should I cut)? I do have a balcony, it faces North and the plant is in a plastic pot (maybe 1.5 quart size) with wood chip mulch. thanks :)

How to care for an injured axolotl?

I have an axolotl (Milton) in a community tank with some gold fish, and a Gourami. They all lived happily in my 75 gallon tank for several months. Today I get home after work to find my Gourami nipping at Milton's gills. It must have been happening all day because his gills are much less fluffy than they were before. I instantly removed him from the tank and put him in my 15 gallon tank upstairs with a few goldfish. He keeps going up for air and is currently perched lazily on some plants in the newly filled tank upstairs. Without most of his gills, is he going to suffocate? What special care will he need to insure he survives?  Please help! I am really worried about him.     PS: I would post pictures but he has moved while I was writing this and is now hiding in his cave.

Hey, just a note...in spite of "circurmstances" I just can't stay away for very long.....

In spite of everything happening in the past few weeks/days, I can't stay away for long....I just have to check in now and then to help when I can where I can; it is what makes me happiest. Rest doesn't seem to be much of an option of late, so if I can reduce stress at home, I may even be "work worthy" come Monday.  I need to be here.....

How do I build a robotic/internet controlled home care system? Answered

I have an elderly relative who is very independent, but needs some help with medications. It appears that her current trouble with them is only temporary, and seems to be limited to medications, although we're not sure. I have access to a good number of old computer monitors and a fair number of old computers, and I was wondering if it would be possible to arrange a setup where a recording, audio and visual, of a relative would remind her to take which meds when. It would also be great to be able to remotely program it, etc. through the internet, and maybe chat with her as well. She doesn't have a computer, and is not very tech-savvy, so it would have to be simple. Any help is much appreciated. thanks!!!

how to make a inner cycle tube at home Answered

I need to make a small inner tube for a project. I cannot get a custom one made at a smaller size. The length of the tubing should be just 110 mm. i have to use a valve that is made of rubber, plastic or stainless steel ( last option) . The tube goes into a magnet, so i have to be careful that the valve i use must not be iron or any attracting materials. Is there a possibility to make it at home.

Making traps for a persistant home intruder

Our 12 year old neighbor will not stay out of my house and car. We have to keep everything locked, and even though we do that, he comes in. We can't afford a home security system, so what can we do? The police don't care, really, because they're always driving him home from someplace he isn't supposed to be. He is like a ninja- he used to come in while we're sleeping, and he could take things from right next to our heads without us knowing. Now, he usually goes into our shed and steals things even when we're awake, and have company! When we locked the gate, the window on the shed got broken. One time he almost walked in the door while my mom was sitting on the couch watching tv. He started to beat on the door for about 15 minutes. Mom doesn't want anything to do with him, so she let him knock because something happens almost every time he comes inside. She said he started to come inside, and she pretended to be asleep. When he saw her, he pulled the door shut real quick. I pulled into the driveway at about this point, not knowing anything that just happened. I though he had just walked up to knock. He then got all wide eyed when he saw me and my sister. He asked "who's in there!?" Like he was afraid or something. We said "mom," and he asked my sister for a cigarette. I'm getting tired of not feeling safe in my own home, and now we have someone else's car here. I don't want her stuff stolen, so what are some traps I can set up so that if they don't hurt him, they will at least wake me up so I can do something?

VIDEO: Natural Home Dairy - milk from Goats

Hi Friends, I wasn't sure where to put this, so I'm trying here. I'm working with my friend Deborah on producing an instructional DVD teaching about goat care. She just gave a presentation this past weekend, that I filmed and put on YouTube. It's instructional, as in, "here's how you take care of goats and milk them", etc. but it wasn't really my info, so I didn't want to make a video instructables from it (as I don't have the knowledge to answer any questions you might have anyways!) So, I thought I would post her hour-long presentation video here for you to enjoy. If you are interested in raising goats for milking and would be interested in buying an instructional DVD teaching about it, what would you want in it? What questions do you want to know the answers to? Well, here's a video to get you started. You can also visit Deborah's blog at http://www.homegrownandhandmadethebook.com  Look for a "Goats 101" instructional DVD in the not-so-distant future!

Don't try this at home, EVER ! The trip to NYC

Ah, I have finally gotten a little time to put some of the details up about my Trip (definition of trip, to stumble, fall, or to almost fall....) to NYC. The bus ride to Manhattan was uneventful. We were dropped off behind the Winter Garden Theater at 50th St. and 7th Ave. For those familiar with the city, this is a little north of Rockefeller Center, and a little west of Radio Music Hall. My little adventure started with me being a little greedy with what I wanted to see on this short day trip. I started down 7th Ave. and decided to scoot over to Broadway. In walking down Broad way (heading south, now) one have to be careful as it crosses the other blocks on a diagonal and it is very easy to lose the road and end up on 7th (and further south; you start ending up on 6th Ave - the Ave. of the Americas). The blocks heading south were shorter then those in the East - West directions. Walking through the Theatre District, and finally reaching Times Square (which is on 7th Ave), I was taking my fair share of pictures (Later, after I get them all posted, I will have to get my Sis in Law to help me identify the buildings, etc.) . Moving from Times square, I get the Garment District. This was a fairly quick walk for me, I didn't see much I really was impressed by there. Madison Square Park, was a nice little area, and then came the weirdest building I have EVER seen (and I have seen a house the shape of a shoe), I came upon the Flatiron building (see pics). In the Flatiron District was Union Square park. A fairly small park. Now, the streets going East and West were numbered, and I had started at 50th St. I was now at 12th, where Broadway becomes University Pl. and it ends at Washing Square Park. This was a nice little park too, so I got a few pictures of it. By this time, not having had a breakfast, I thought it would be good to find something to eat. I moved west along 4th st. until I got to Broadway again. Once I got into Soho (South Houston), I started getting a little turned around (I had just walked nearly 50 blocks). When I got to Canal Street, it was so crowded, I only went about one block on the street and didn't find anything of interest, so I continued on south on Cortland. Somewhere in this area I found (somehow I got to Chamber's St) I found a little Indian restaurant called Jhankar. It was a pleasant atmosphere, and the food was good. I continued on Chambers to get to the east side. I saw the World Financial Center, and eventually found Ground Zero. I took a few pics of what I could see. I did wonder around Battery Park a bit too long, and finally asked someone how to get to the Staten Isl. ferry docking point. I was told it was another 20+ minute walk further south (I was already at the other ferry docking ports and had already walked for over 4-5 hours). He let me know of the Shuttle bus, which the city pays for, which would pick me up and drop me off right outside the area of the Staten Isl ferry. That was a really decent little ferry ride too. 1/2 hour over, 1/2 back. Now it was getting to be near 6 PM and I thought I had better have a little to eat before heading back to 50th st. After walking a few blocks, I realized I was NOT going to make it in time. I looked for a Subway terminal but found none (I had already walked as far as getting back up to the most southern tip of Chinatown. I walked (very briskly) up to Bleecker St. looking for a subway or a cab. I finally got a cab waved down (I am just NOT the type of person that waves down cabs), and we headed off. I called the Bus driver. He said it shouldn't be long, he should get me there in time; and said traffic is a bit heavy here on 4th street. He nearly blew a fuse (and he had just reason too).....but he calmed down and said he'd circle the block and hope I got there soon, and to give him a call when I did. Fortunately, when I finally got back to 50th and 7th, it was only 12 minutes late and he had just pulled up with the bus. Besides the quarter sized blister on the ball of my right foot, and the lunch/brunch I had I brought nothing home with me (well, I forgot about the sunburn on my head.....yeah yeah, I should have worn a cap). All in all, it was nice to see everything......and I will never again walk 70+ blocks just to see everything again. I will become familiar with the subways, as that is about the cheapest way to go (except the shuttle bus). And I am about as stiff as I can be....now for some pictures. UPDATE:More pics UPDATE #2 The few remaining pictures I have left have been uploaded with these to my Facebook album NYC Trip

On wednesday i saw

An RX7 just barely parked on the side of 410 with the flashers on, and a girl by it, she was pretty cute actually, and a ford explorer behind it, and knew, by instinct, the engine probably blew, due to not changing the oil, not putting oil into it, and just not taking care of it. Damn, another RX7 OFF the road, just what we need. I am just glad i can think of Aaron Cake's RX7 sleeping in its home, safe.

Suggestions on making a plastic-free push-up cosmetic container? Answered

I absolutely despise plastic and don't want it touching my body or anything that touches me any more than absolutely necessary. I've been working on some home-made body care products, and have made the deodorant posted on Instructables by scoochmaroo...but she re-uses an old plastic bottle, and that's just icky! So I'm open to suggestions...aluminum, glass bottles converted somehow, toilet paper tubes, ceramic, birch bark...whatever! I'd like it to sit at 1-2 oz, and have push-up-from-the-bottom capabilities. Or if you know where I can find what I want, I've been looking all over the net and haven't found a thing!

Use your god given brain

Here is an interesting brain game. God gives it to people twice absolutely free, but if they want to have it for the third time, they have to pay money. What is it? Please, if you want to solve yourself, be careful and do not look at the comments of this post, because someone could have already written the solution there. Good luck!I found that somewhere, and i thought ill add it here, ill see how fast people will figure out what is is ;)The answer is teeth, you have teeth, they fall of and regrow Don't read it or else it will spoil the fun ;)

Repotting flower plants

I tried repotting flowers from one pot to another but they die.  I am doing something wrong. How can I repot flower plants from one pot to another.  What soils and other items do I need and is there a certain size flower pot I have to repot them in or does it depend on how big I want the flower to grow.  I want to put these flower(s) plants on my patio.  Sometimes during the day my patio has a lot of sun and other times it does not.  What is the best flower plant(s) for this. What is the best way to take care of a repotted flower plant.

Stray Cats Strut

Sad to say, a homeowner in the neighborhood takes no care of her cats and, of course, we had a bumper crop of strays for a while until nature and cars took care of most of them.  Two or three full-grown cats from the original litters are now quite healthy and roam our neighborhood freely.  As I have two indoor/outdoor cats, the "Wilds" have decided to take our yard as their own and you all know how cats mark their territory.  Every corner of our house, planters, and bbq has been sprayed as the battle for territory continues.  They're quite bold; I ran into one in our garage!  I'd like an effective, safe, non-painful (and entertaining, if possible) way to discourage them from coming into our yard and/or what I can spray over their spray to  nullify their scent.  (Baking soda and water mix, etc.)  I'm not home during the day to "catch" them in the act, I need something long-acting.  Thanks!

Secret Message Revealed After Wet

Does anybody know of a way to have a paper with a secret message on it (pretend the message says, "It Rained"), and once the paper has been soaked with liquid (water, or maybe a mild acid or base), the secret message is revealed permanently? So like, if you had a little paper sign out in your yard with the secret message, and it rained, and the paper got wet, when you come home, you would see the dried out paper but with the message revealed. (note, i don't actually care about a "it rained" indicator, just an example)

Could cleaning with bleech on lead paint cause temporary stroke like symptoms and fetal distress? ? Answered

I rent my home. When I moved here with three children, I was told there was no lead paint. Seven years later, I became pregnant. While cleaning, I used bleech to clean walls and floors and shelves and windows. I also scraped and repainted some areas. One night, I went to the store with my eldest daughter and had slight pain and numbness on one side of my body. I also couldnt speak properly or complete a responsive answer with correct words. My sentences were inappropriate. It lasted about 24 hours and got better. I felt extremely fatigued but blamed pregnancy. A few days later, I was sick, enormously fatigued and had sharp abdominal pain unlike labor. I went to the hospital and my baby's heart rate was failing. He was dieing. He was taken by emergency c-section, two months early and recovered in the newborn intensive care for three weeks. I recently found out that the home i rent does indeed contain lead paint and probably a good deal of it. The home owner found out about a state program that would come in and do all kinds of renovations for free if he signed up. Then he discovered that he would have to pay the back taxes on the home and cover the cost of the inspectors and opted not to have the lead removed. I am still living here with my children.

I have put my knex up for sale on Ebay because I no longer use it. It is very good condition as I have sorted it over the period of about 4 days. There is enough knex there to build I_Am_Canadian's Heavy Cannon V1 as I have done so before. Just to make sure! 30A to charge battery?

Hey! I have an old home alarm system which is broken beyond repair. I just wanted to make sure if it is OK to charge the 12v battery at 2.1 or2.4 Ah with an ATX PSU at 30A? Will the battry just take 2A from it? If not I have the transformer that came with the Alarm, would that be safe to charge with? It's 12v BTW. Thanks. Never can be too careful. Also, I'm using it on a scanner light tube, this will be fine, yes? I have the starter, it is not a problem. It's weird though, when it is lit, you can pull out the ground on the light tube, not the starter and ut still stays lit. Weird. Thanks in advance!

Ethernet Wiring Order

Hi, I have a cat6 ethernet cable with 8 non-twisted wires all apparently being of different solid colors. Is it OK to attach both ends to the connectors in any order as long as both ends have the same color order? Since the colors are non-standard I can't go by any convention such as T-568A or T-568B. I am using this in my home and since it will be a one-off I don't care about convention standards as long as the configuration I use will work. By the way, do I need to be concerned about the fact that they are non-twisted wires? What's the difference anyway? I would appreciate your answer. Thanks.

Electronics for five year olds?!

Hi everyone, I joined the forum and became a member because I'm getting rather starved for ideas... A community centre (or center as you spell it south of the boarder) asked me to design/ come up with some drop in classes for children and their care givers. Some kids could be as young as five, and they want the class to have an electronics, hackery, tech based focus. I've done this with 12-17 year old, but this 5 year old thing is throwing me for a loop. I'm thinking about joule thieves and home made robots, but does anyone else know of a project that's gone over really well with young kids they can share at all? I'm not sure if this is in the right category, apologies if it isn't.

I brought home a new puppy Sat and my 2 year old dog is not happy about her.

Hello, I have a wonderful neutered male, 2 year old Cavalier king charles named Bentley. Bentley Loves people, kids, other dogs, cats, everything and every one. Perhapes he has been a bit spoiled. He has been well socialized often taking dog park trips, took a socialization class as a pup.. we work on issues with a trainer as they come up.. he had been humping from time to time at the dog park so we were working through that. I love Bentley so much have wanted to add a second cavalier king charles for some time. We went meeting dogs and Bentley got on fine with them all on their territory and on neutral territory. We finally choose to go with an 8 week old female black and tan cavalier from the same breeder we got Bentley from but different parents (the dogs are actually co owned) They did fine on neutral territory but as soon as we got in the house Bentley was mad.. I have never seen him like that, Barking, snarling, at her. I separated them and have been trying to work things out with them gradually. It has only been a couple of days of course.  He also tries to push her under him and hump her, but she wiggles out as a small 4 lb puppy will, and he gets annoyed about that too. I can tell him "SIT" and it seems to redirect him. I am so in love with my new girl who I have named Velvet, already, so I need to make things work out. Bentley seems fine with her when they go out and potty, or are just calm together, sometimes something will set him off though, like if she gets too comfy on my lap he will start growl barking at her and acting like he might nip her but doesn't actually do it. though she does have slobber on her after. If she moves to my husbands lap he goes over to him and does the same reaction. then I have to separate them. Toys.. forget it, he will not let her have her toys or his. If they are just walking around together they seem fine.. but he does not like her getting playful or too snuggely with us.. he also gets mad if he notices her mouthing. (teething pups of course require that training) it is hard not to have him notice as we are correcting her.  I am trying to keep things equal, equal attention, when they are together (she is crated  a lot for house training anyways) They potty together and both get a treat, teaching her sit if he is there and sits they both get a treat. Both get petted at the same time together, and when Velvet went to the vet today I took Bentley along. These were all tips from the trainer I go to. I just have never seen this sweet doggie boy of mine so bent out of shape at another living thing. I just want re assurance that others have been through this, and had it all work out in the end, and give me tips as to what worked for them! I keep reading mixed advice on what to do in this situation so I am not sure what to do. I am leashing them for interactions right now of course for safety reasons and I am of course only allowing closely supervised play. Velvet also has a safe play area that I gated off with an xpen, where her crate is. They are eating in the same room, But Bentley does not care much about food anyways, never had a food aggression problem there.

Spanish or French | Intro to Metalworking or Intro to Engineering and Tech.?

Ok, so it's that time of the year - picking 9th grade courses. I'm signing up for all gifted (higher than honors) academic classes, but am stuck on my electives. To get into universities and colleges in Georgia, I have to take 2 sequential years of either French or Spanish. My mom says Spanish is easier, like I'm sure most people would. I don't really care about speaking fluently in either language; I just need to go to college. What would you say would be the easiest to get through? So, I guess all of y'all know that I aspire to go into the mechanical engineering field. High school is a good place to start out, but I've come upon another bump in the road: Should I go with the metalworking classes, or the engineering (and technology) ones?I've always wanted to be able to weld, and I'm sure that's a major skill when it comes to engineering. Classes that my future school offers include Intro to Metalworking, Arc Welding, GMAW and GTAW (which I won't take), Intro to Milling (which includes using a lathe and a CNC machine), and a sheet metal class. The engineering class covers things like CAD, CAM, CNC, robotics, audio and visual productions, and other technology things.I think the metalworking would be best for me - I'm more of a hands-on person; i.e., I like tangent things, not doing "theoretical" things on a computer, though I know all of the CAD stuff would be very useful.I'd like to take all of it if I could, but that's only possible by going to summer school (which costs $180 per class).Any help would be appreciated!

Computerless typing

Hey,    Would anybody know how i could make a keyboard that would work without a computer? My idea would by a keyboard that you could type in, and the signals would be sent to some circuitry (would an arduino work?) and stored until you could send the files of everything typed up into a notepad file. It would also have to be battery powered, and preferably not bigger then 2-3 times the size of a normal keyboard. I am making the idea so that i could type stuff when at places other then home (and i dont feel like taking my laptop (mostly for stuff like on the subway, or when waiting... Anyone know how to make a freestanding sound-emitting device to stop a neighborhood barking dog?

My wife and I just purchased a home and we found out one of the neighbors have a couple dogs that bark all day and into the night. I suffer from migraines and these things are driving me crazy! We have talked to the owners very politely and they don't seem to care. I would love to make a freestanding sound-emitting device that I can direct in the directions of the neighbors fence. Can anyone point me to a instructable  or something that explains how to make one. I know I can buy one for like $75 but I would love to learn how to make one and maybe be able to have more control over how it's used. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Going Crazy!

There was a parrot in our tree! (updated)

I was on the computer and my dad came inside and told me there was a parrot in our tree! So I grabbed my camera and ran outside. It's a really beautiful bird. We got it to go onto someone's arm and then got it into our garage. Then it landed on my arm so my dad tried to come catch it with a box and it almost got stuck in my hair. Eventually we got it in the box and brought it over to my neighbors house (she was helping us catch it) because my mom would have a cow if she came home and saw that I had a parrot. They're going to call the police department and stuff so they most likely won't be able to keep it :(Update The neighbors had the parrot for quite a while and they had put an and in the newspaper and everything and then they gave it to one of their friends to take care of and then later the person who owned the bird came back from vacation and contacted them about it. I'm not sure what happened after that.

New Online Marketplace for Disabled Crafters

There is a new online marketplace which contracts with disabled individuals to sell their high quality, homemade crafts on his/her behalf.  Please stop by http://www.craftedelegance.org I am disabled due to a chronic illness and have been unable to find an employer to hire me to work from home, so I created this online marketplace to sell my glycerin soap and opened it up to other disabled crafters as well.  I take care of the business aspect of selling your crafts and your only worry is to make your crafts and ship them directly to the customer when you are notified someone has bought your product.  Be sure to stop by our forum and read our blog as well.  Our forum has two levels to it...one for the general public and one for the crafters.  It is a way for us to support each other in our everyday struggles with our individual chronic illnesses or physical impairments.

Building a sensor chronograph to measure speed of batted ball

I need a sensor chronograph designed to measure the speed of a batted baseball. It would consist of a frame assembly mounted on a pole in front of home plate in a batting cage. The goal would be for the device to be stationary, able to measure the speed of a batted ball on demand and then displaying it on an LCD positioned 30-60 feet away. It should be automatic and unattended, working without anyone doing anything to activate it other than hitting an oncoming pitch. We are interested in measuring only the batted ball, not the pitched ball from the pitcher or the swing speed of the bat. The measuring area would need to be about 2-6 feet high (depending on how far in front of home plate it is positioned) to accommodate a batted ball that is hit high or low. It should be able to measure the speed of any ball hit fair, from the first base line to the third base line.  The speed of the batted ball would range anywhere from 40 to 130 mph. Since the device would be used on a repetitive, long term basis care would need to be taken during the design to provide for protection from any batted balls that might find their way into the device itself (a piece of screen, chain link or plexiglass installed in front of it?) If you know where I might obtain a working apparatus or might locate someone willing to build one I would appreciate your response to the email address below. Jerry Heath jerry@webcitycybercafe.com

Getting sponsorship?

Hello everyone, I am currently by the end of my studies and I am also working as part-time.  Now I applied to be a volunteer for the Olympics and Paralympics for 2016 in RIO and have been selected for both which I am really excited for, but the only problem is that to be able to go over there It is very costly as I live on the other side of the world and I don't have enough funds and time is very limited to acquire those as well.   So what I need is to find a way so that I can get sponsored for my air tickets and take care of my accommodation.  Here are the things that I have been thinking and trying to do as well. First I looked for a job and I got it but the problem is that the pay isn't enough so that I can get the required amount to cover all my expenses.  I cannot get another job as I need to complete my studies before June so time isn't in my favour again.  However I think that I can work freelance online for short jobs such as 1 day to 1 month and If I can get as many as possible It should help.  SInce those won't be enough I need to look for sponsors but I do not know where to look for and how to do it and I was also thinking of getting a job in the US or even south america so as to be able to stay and work there for a while after the event so that I can take care of myself and explore at the same time before returning to my home country.   Any help. I really appreciate it.

Kiteman recommends... birding websites.

Just thought I'd share some websites I use as part of my hobby.  They are mainly UK-specific, but could be of interest to overseas birders: Birdguides It costs to get the detailed content, but they have a free sightings list and weekly newsletter.  Plenty of links to other sites as well. RSPB "The" birding website.  Plenty of identification help, including recordings of calls and videos of birds in motion.  Not very interactive, though. BTO More specialist website, home of the UK bird surveys.  Site seems broken at the moment - homepage is blank, as are several others.  Link given is to BBS, you can explore from there. iSpot New to me, aimed at a mix of amateurs and pros - forums and advice, but the biggie is uploading photos of your sightings with a facility for members to agree with your identification or discuss it.  Also has sections to cover all other aspects of wildlife, even fungi and lichens.  I've just joined - care to guess my user name? Collins Birds. Update: SITE IS NOW LIVE!  Go see. Hope these are of interest - maybe you'd like to share sites that are as useful in your area or country?

the mobile version of the instructable website drives me crazy....

I love the instructables website and almost everything works just as it should be... but the mobile version of the site (at least the one for android, i don't know how the iphone version is) is not cool to navigate at all, there seem to be things missing at every end and since the last changes i don't even know how to open the non-mobile-version with my smart phone (a button at the bottom of the page that says "full site" could give you the impression that it would take you to the normal version of the website, but it doesn't....) anymore - before some changes were made at least that was possible. i also have the instructables app, which is totally fine, it is a bit basic but since it is just an app i can live with that. so one could argue that i could just wait a bit until i'm at home with my laptop to enjoy instructables and don't care about the mobile version, but every once in a while i really want to access the site from my smartphone and it keeps on being annoying. so maybe if there would be a way to make the mobile website version better or the normal version easy accesible with a mobile phone it would make my very happy!

Is there any way to mod an Air Blasters Tommy 20 to keep it from jamming? Answered

Okay, I recently bought a Tommy 20 (what was I thinking?) to decorate/mod and make a "needle rifle" out of it with green LED darts (haven't made any designs for those yet) and so I took it home and tested it out. The results almost made me cry. But I figured that I could find a way to fix my problems. I opened it up (my dad doesn't know, shhhh!!!! It's my gun anyway), and I wrapped rubber bands around the drive wheels. It helped a little, but I'm still having problems. The darts aren't being pushed out of the holder far enough, and the ones that don't catch end up getting stuck and causing a huge jam up. Is there anything I can do to the mechanism that pushes these wretched darts forward push farther? Is there a cut I can make in the plastic that lets the darts not jam up? Should I keep the rubber bands on, or even-glue them on? What should I do (I just want it to shoot and not jam-I could care less about accuracy).

*UPDATE: AAARRRGGGG ! Looks Like my BOOT got a hole in it.......

Soooo, I guess I am buying a new HD.   So far all attempts to boot the machine to Windows has left me with ChkDsk looping on an error it can not fix.  If I could just get Ubuntu to boot to ROOT so I can transfer all my admin files, I wouldn't care so much abouit losing the HD.   So far, I've spent a full 12 hours working on it......I even did a full "restore" from the repair disk.....nothing changed, but nothing failed during the restore....so something is not quite right. This also means I will be on line in a MUCH more limited fashion than before. Replaced the HD.....had a LOT of problems until  I realized the machine still saw the old drive and kept trying to run CHKDSK on it.    New HD 320gb installed an up.....tomorrow, we deal with installing the firewall, and maybe, if I have some time,  a few other things  (like a word processor, etc).    What a day its been though !  I STILL can't get ON LINE at home....not from windows anyways.....still no firewall.....sigh...this is gettin ridiculous...

How would someone create a closet-sized, archival space (temperature controlled etc) in their house for less than $100?

The Detroit Sound Conservancy (@detroitsound and https://www.facebook.com/detroitsoundconservancy) is dedicated to preserving Detroit sounds and telling Detroit stories. To that end we are interested in enhancing and expanding Detroit's archival infrastructure when it comes to sound-related media. While we pursue the creation of our own archival space, we want to encourage our fellow Detroit music lovers in Detroit and around the world to take care of their own archives as well as raise-awareness about the need for archival practices when it comes to music history. So... what recommendations can we make to our allies and friends who might have personal archives and / or materials worth archiving? We are imagining ephemera (flyers, posters), various printed media (articles, newspapers, magazines), sound recordings (vinyl, cassette, eight track, reel-to-reel), musical instruments, and digital files, amongst many other things. What do the Instructables recommend? For $100 we may not be able to create a museum-worthy vault in our home. But surely for $100 we can create a space that would hold up to many everyday threats to our musical treasures. What say you? Thanks @detroitsound

Need your input on the acceptability of posting a medical device ible

I am a new member but an old reader.  If websites were worlds Instructables would be my home planet. I have plans for ibles that center around stuff I make for my small farm and old house; my kid calls it The Things My Mother Finds In Other's People's Trash.  No problem there.  My editor (I do a little no-big-deal writing) told me I should make an ible about ostomy care as it's something I deal with daily since I underwent a total colectomy and nephrectomy from cancer.  By the way, if anybody happens to post an ible for a replacement kidney...  I wanted to post some ibles about different ways to cut the wafers, the part the pouch attaches to, to accomodate different body types, how to make the process so simple you can take care of it in a few seconds with a bit of privacy, how to easily and thoroughly empty the pouch, which for ileostomy patients is a 12 or more times a day;  modify underwear instead of buying special $55 a pair "ostomy wear" and most important, how to CLEAN AND REUSE those pouches that come twenty to a box (that's a MONTHS supply), cost over $100 after insurance, and are supposed to be worn DIRTY and then thrown away in the vast sea of plastic, a biohazard and a weight on the earth. I realized that although my ideas are kind of no-brainer simple, the subject might attract really brilliant people who could offer better ideas and designs.  Before I went forward with my postings though I wanted to check with you all and ensure that the subject matter would not be so gross or offensive to the community that it caused a problem.  I'm so conflicted about it myself except when I get mad about it that I didn't feel I could trust my judgement. I really appreciate you taking the time to read my long ramble here and any advice you would like to render. Thank you so much!

knex pistol contest

Well, there are literally thousands of sidearms out there, all made from knex. All have fallen to two categories: have not built yet and built. I'm seriously tired of knex guns that have a lack of function and too much good looks. and so, I would like to declare a contest. there are three main areas for scoring criteria: 1) function 2) size 3) broken pieces I am asking this great community to pull together and create something awesome. all entries should: > have a satisfying feel when the firing pin first slides home and the shot leaves the barrel. > feel/ look like a traditional side arm > have an innovative feature: IE, removable clips > not use broken pieces > be efficient. I don't want to be pulling the firing ram back with 20 pounds of force. scince people will continually argue over their gun's position, I will judge. I will also not submit anything. If you think you built a knex gun that meets these suggestions (and maybe smashes them), feel free to: < make an instructable with good/ amazing clarity of instructions < make the instructable sound like you care < post the instructable as a link in reply. thank you, and good luck. I'm sort of like the Simon Cowell of knex judging. hard to please. contest has opened now. contest will close on march 31, 12:00 AM.

Safety or lack thereof

Hi, Does Instructibles have a duty of care with regard to the safety on the ibles that are presented on the site? In the past, people would put "please don't try this at home, please be instructed on soldering/HV/lasers/...." now I am seeing some 'ibles that are carelessly dangerous. Some examples are: - connecting a microwave magnetron to a high gain waveguide antenna output - circuits and places to purchase lasers that are not eye-safe, even likely to blind and burn (1W diode lasers) - HV circuits that have no protection / current limiting, creepage and clearance considerations etc. Maybe I am a grumpy old man, but it does worry me! I would hate to see kids blinded just because they read an ible without understanding the dangers, build something up and become blinded.  Would you like it if that was your kid and they saw it on ibles? For the budding inventors out there, to get the product to market they will have to consider safety in the designs.  Why not start now as part of the product concept? Not trying to be a scaremonger, just trying to understand where people are coming from and provide some suggestions on how to improve things: - provide check boxes or an icon that people can tick (eg skull and crossbones for chemicals, laser safety icon etc.) - provide standard warnings - refuse to publish or ask for rework of 'ibles that are recklessly dangerous - sponsorship for a 'safety first' ible competition? - ..... Is this something that 'ibles would be interested in? Regards Steve
