Hotel made from trash

The first hotel made from garbage has opened in Rome. Made by Save the Beach, the hotel used over 26,000 lbs of trash collected from European beaches. Designer H.A. Shult explains “It’s made of garbage because where ever you go on this planet there is garbage. We are living in a time of garbage on the planet which we have only rented.” OK, the hotel isn't entirely made of trash. The structure is prefab so that no one gets killed by a pile of trash falling on them. If you want to see it in person, go and check it out soon as it is not permanent. Why does a hotel shower seem to rinse off soap so much better than my home shower?

When I shower at a hotel, the soap always seems to rinse off very quickly. At home it takes a lot more rinsing. I'd say "softer water" except that our home water *is* quite soft.

57-Storey Death ray

Concave, polished, and 57 stories tall - the Vdara Hotel in Las Vagas could be the world's largest death ray... Reports are cropping up around the web that the smooth curved surface of the hotel focuses the Sun's rays into a patch around 10 feet across in the pool area, soon after noon. Fortunately, the glass disperses around 70% of the solar energy falling on it, otherwise lawyer Bill Pintas might not be here to tell the tale; After a brief dip in the hotel pool, Pintas was sunning on a recliner. He was on his stomach, relaxed, eyes closed. But suddenly, the lawyer became so uncomfortably hot that he leaped up to move. He tried to put on his flip-flop sandals but, inexplicably, they were too hot to touch. So he ran barefoot to the shade. "I was effectively being cooked," Pintas said. "I started running as fast as I could without looking like a lunatic." Then he smelled an odor, and realized it was coming from his head, where a bit of hair had been scorched. It was about 12:20 p.m., as best Pintas can recall. The hot-spot, which sweeps the entire pool area during the day, spikes at least 20 degrees above ambient temperatures, and has been seen to melt plastic bags and cups (made of plastics which melt at around 70°C (160F). Other guests, including newspaper reviewers, have also observed the burning beam. The hotel management doesn't call it a "death ray", they prefer the more friendly distinction "solar convergence phenomenon". Gordon Absher, a spokesman for MGM Mirage says the hotel is addressing the problem, and comments, "Because of the curved, concave shape of that hotel, they sometimes get isolated pockets of high temperatures." ---------------------------------- Never mind dispersing the light - get those windows polished up, and let's see how many lawyers a fifty seven storey burning glass can really deal with!

Has anyone any knowledge of whether the Richard T LaPiere Poll experiement has been updated since 1930?

In 1930,  Richard T. LaPiere deomonstrated that, at least in some areas of life, people did not always DO what they said they did,  nor did they always "believe" what they said they did.  He took some friends of his on a trip across the USA;  they were of Chinese decent, but spoke unbroken English.  They were turned away from only one establishment out of hundreds.  Detailed records were kept of everything that happened on the trip.  Once home, he "polled" these same hotels and found that, except for a VERY few (one to be exact and one abstained) all of them said they would NOT harbor someone of Chinese decent in their hotel. To make sure the trip itself had not influenced the owners,  he polled places he had not gone and got the same results.   No one would say they would accept them in their establishment.  Remember, this was 1930.   This throws out an interesting dynamic.  If people generally do not do what they claim they will do (for whatever reasons.....) then polls and questionaires are not really worth very much. Anyone know of any updated studies on this subject?

Furniture Mash-Up

A bunch of broken furniture and enough epoxy, and you've got Thomas Wold's Piecemeal.Commissioned to design a "green" coffee table for Good Hotel in San Francisco (the "first hotel with a conscience"), Wold scavenged used bits and pieces to create his piece. Scope the process on his blog. And while you're there, check out the computer station he designed for the same hotel. Details are in the current issue of Ready Made.

what should a hotel General Manager do with all the forgotten Cell phone chargers

I'm a General Manager at a hotel and have worked at a number of different hotels through the years. Every place I've ever worked there is always a huge bin of long lost cell phone chargers. We've looked at donating them to charities but haven't found anyone in need or a use for them. I've used some in the past for projects. Is there any other uses for these or a place that people could use them. As a service to our guests we always keep a few around for the guests that forgot theirs at home but we always have more then we would ever use for that purpose.

San Francisco Trip

Can anyone please write an Instructable on each and every aspect of Ultimate Monopoly?

Hey Frnds! I recently saw these modded board designs of monopoly (named Ultimate Monopoly by the author) at DeviantArt: http://jonizaak.deviantart.com/gallery/ and got inspired to print one on paper. I'm dying to play it with my frnds as it is the best ever. But im unable to decide on some aspects of the game. Like what to use for the cards and how to make the skyscrapers, houses, hotels, train depots and cab stands. I can buy them but other than the standard monopoly, no one is sold in our country. (I am Indian :P). So i was thinking if anyone can make an instructable on how to make these with the other basic things it will be very nice. It will sum up to a very good instructable as no such other is available on this site. Plz comment its link if you do so. Thnxx in advance.

Gift ideas for travelers? Answered

I'm searching for some gift ideas for my parents.  They like to travel; to the caribbean and Germany mostly.  I figure it would be a good idea to get them something travel-related.  Stuff like portable scales (for weighing luggage), security door stops, mini first aid kits, water purifiers.  They stick to hotels when traveling so no camping or survival gear is really necessary. So, any clever ideas?

Input on building a TARDIS Console bar would be appreciated

My boyfriend and I want to have a Who-themed room party at a sci-fi/linux convention in our area.  We've bounced around the idea of having a TARDIS console bar set up in a corner of the room, so I'd really appreciate ideas for the console that could easily be set up and broken down, as this is  going in a room we only have for a weekend. Ideas for random gadgets and doo-hickeys, places to have alcohol and the like would be greatly appreciated as well.  So far we know we want to have a quarter or half keg in the center of the console, located behind us. Leaning towards 10th's design, but might be willing to go for the 11th's more steam punk look. Also, decorating tips for the room as a whole would be good.  So for we want to make roundels out of foam and stick them to the wall with tack to imitate the 10ths 'desktop theme' and to print a door sized TARDIS door to tack to the door to the hotel room. The idea behind the party is that the hotel room and the TARDIS have merged, ala Time Crash.

"Miracle Liquid" - Electrolyzed Water

Http://articles.latimes.com/2009/feb/23/business/fi-magicwater23I think someone with more time than me should see how to do this most efficiently and see if it work! The article:Sounds like the old "Saturday Night Live" gag for Shimmer, the faux floor polish plugged by Gilda Radner. But the elixir is real. It has been approved by U.S regulators. And it's starting to replace the toxic chemicals Americans use at home and on the job.The stuff is a simple mixture of table salt and tap water whose ions have been scrambled with an electric current. Researchers have dubbed it electrolyzed water -- hardly as catchy as Mr. Clean. But at the Sheraton Delfina in Santa Monica, some hotel workers are calling it el liquido milagroso -- the miracle liquid. That's as good a name as any for a substance that scientists say is powerful enough to kill anthrax spores without harming people or the environment.Used as a sanitizer for decades in Russia and Japan, it's slowly winning acceptance in the United States. A New York poultry processor uses it to kill salmonella on chicken carcasses. Minnesota grocery clerks spray sticky conveyors in the checkout lanes. Michigan jailers mop with electrolyzed water to keep potentially lethal cleaners out of the hands of inmates. In Santa Monica, the once-skeptical Sheraton housekeeping staff has ditched skin-chapping bleach and pungent ammonia for spray bottles filled with electrolyzed water to clean toilets and sinks."I didn't believe in it at first because it didn't have foam or any scent," said housekeeper Flor Corona. "But I can tell you it works. My rooms are clean."Management likes it too. The mixture costs less than a penny a gallon. It cuts down on employee injuries from chemicals. It reduces shipping costs and waste because hotel staffers prepare the elixir on site. And it's helping the Sheraton Delfina tout its environmental credentials to guests. The hotel's kitchen staff recently began disinfecting produce with electrolyzed water. They say the lettuce lasts longer. They're hoping to replace detergent in the dishwasher. Management figures the payback time for the $10,000 electrolysis machine will be less than a year."It's green. It saves money. And it's the right thing to do," said Glenn Epstein, executive assistant at the Sheraton Delfina. "It's almost like fantasy."

Prank Ideas?

I want to prank a girl who I hate because she's been spreading rumours about me. I'm not really very upset about that but I still think it needs to be justified so I'm looking for some harmless and inconspicuous pranks that won't get me into trouble. My class is going on a school trip for a week and I want to take that opportunity to get back at her.  We're visiting a big city and will be touring around during the day stay in hotel rooms at night. I don't want a HUGE prank because that could get everyone into trouble and ruin the trip altogether. The perfect prank would be something that isn't obvious, so it can be blamed on just dumb luck, but something humiliating or at least bothersome.

Instructables Internship - Day 3

Day 3! Whoo!(The hotel's internet wasn't working, so I had to wait until now to post)Today was another bright cough day at Instructables HQ. I continued working on some small little projects of my own, as well as poking the database and forcing it to spit out the exact information that I wanted. (later, I wrote a script to do all the poking for me)The new rating system will be much better, taking more into account than just a click, which will lead to more accurate ratings, which means you'll all get even more awesome instructables! Horray!!!!!Its amazing being here, though. Everyone's so great and helpful, its really hard to put into words... I feel lucky to be here! And don't worry, you'll get a blog post for today, too!

Rewiring my house to reduce electricity consumption

I am getting ready to rewire my house and want to do so in such a manner that a motion detector or timer shuts down most of the outlets in a room so that the phantom use of electricity or the abuse of same by teens is reduced (I am being realistic here). The Electrician thinks I am short a few bricks of a load so to speak. Lights he understands, plug load nada. I've seen something similar done in Europe when traveling where your hotel room powered down when you weren't in it and powered up with your key card in the slot when you were in it. I want to shut off all the power in the room when it is empty during periods of sleep except for one outlet which would power the clock/lamp and of course fire alarms. Help me out here.
