12 Hurricane Preparedness Projects

I read some of the 12 projects. I did one myself since I live in Puerto Rico, went through Hurricane Irma this past Wednesday (Sept 6th) ,have been though several hurricane sin the past (since 1964), and will go through a new one (Hurricane Jose) this weekend. In most occasions, we lost power and water for days. I lost only power for 30 hours after Hurricane Irma. My own project was a two part installation for when I lacked water (I have a generator set for power): 1. Install a 50 gallon cistern on my roof to store potable water for cleaning and bathing needs 2. Install a pressurized 20 gallon tank for showering The 50 gallon cistern was actually a large trash barrel with a removable cover ($40), which I added two 1/2 inch plastic faucet valves, one near the base as a gravity fed output, and one on the cover as a water inlet. After cleaning the barrel, and attaching the valves, I fixed the barrel (now a "cistern") on my roof (over a beam for weight distribution) with two wire guides. I attached a plain water hose from an external faucet to the top valve to fill the cistern. Then I attached a new hose to the bottom valve and ended that with a regular sprayer. I fitted this into the bathroom over the toilet tank and near the sink, so it can be used for face and hand washing, and for filling the toilet tank after each flush. The pressurized water tank is a unused water heater that can hold up to 120 PSI. I replaced the cold water inlet with a cap and a auto tire valve by drilling into the cap and pulling the tire vale through (same as for a wheel hub).. I installed a 1/2 inch faucet on the hot water outlet and a short (pressure resistant) water hose, and finished it with a water sprinkler. Then I installed a.new 1/2 inch valve on the drain.for the lower water inlet.  I attached the hose from the cistern to the lower valve, opened the valves on the cistern output and tank input, and removed the inner stem from the tire vale. When the tank was full, some water will spurt out from the open tire valve. Then I close both valves, remove the cistern hose, reinstall the tire valve stem, and use an electric air pump to apply pressure up to 50 PSI.  Now if I open the water sprinkler, i have a hand held shower!  After one use (about five minutes) the pressure can drop but if I have electrical power, I can reapply air pressure again. After several showers, I release the remaining air pressure at the tire valve, refill the tank from the cistern, and apply air pressure again. This has worked for years, and I keep everything ready for the next storm of when I have no water supply.

Contest info

Hello world of instructables. I was looking at the hurricane lasers contest, and noticed that you must be 14 to win. I was wondering if that means 14 at the time of posting, or 14 at the time you receive the prize, because i turn 14 shortly. If anyone knows the answer, please tell me! Thanks!

What crazy weather! (Might not see me for a while.)

So I might not be around for a while. Turns out Hurricane Ike still had enough steam to send massive wind damage through Kentucky and Indiana as well as multiple other places. My neighborhood is completely out - we have trees down on cars and into houses, and power lines down all over the place. Most of Louisville is without electricity and it's not sounding so good - they're saying 3 days to 2-3 weeks before everyone gets power back because we sent so many emergency personal to Texas to help them out. But now I have to go to class and then try to find a place that still has food, candles and batteries left. And a place to charge my phone. Even the power where I work is out and has been for two days. :P Wish me luck! It's a madhouse here right now. I can't imagine what an actual hurricane could do after this. There are lots of crazy pictures here:http://www.courier-journal.com/

We're all gonna die!!!

If you've seen the news you might have seen that the state of Florida is in the path of a tropical storm. However if you are in the state, seeing local coverage, you'll know that we're in the path of a Class 12 DeathStorm!!! In reality, the situation is even more dire than even the local news reports, I'm down to my last beer. One plus, it only took an imminent natural disaster to get our governor to visit the state, he's been too busy campaigning for mccain. I just want you to know, that is I don't make it out this time, the gold is buried under a big W!

Hurricane balls and tornado ball with air compressor

This is a video of me spinning up hurricane balls with an air compressor. I have gotten them faster (I estimate this run got up to about 10,000rpm) but it is still very cool. The second part of the video is some random thing I made when I was bored. It just spins a marble really fast inside the container. I know it's not very exciting :P haha please comment and rate! hm...the video won't embed so just go here.

Is it possible to patch a glass globe such as one used for a hurricane lantern? Answered

I have a hurricane lamp and the glass recently cracked. I have no ability to replace it and I'd like to patch it so that the crack doesn't spread any further. The globe is small, so it's really easy for the flame to come close to the glass. Is it possible to to fix it? None of the glass has fallen off, it's just cracked quite splendidly.

How to convert a charcoal turkey smoker to natural gas with an external heat element?

I have a charcal Brinkman turkey smoker and a 63-6300 heavey duty utility stove bulit by Hurricane Products. The Brinkman fit perfectly on to the Hurrican with the Brinkman bottom on or off. When the Brinkman bottom is off the next part is the part the holds the charcoal. with the Hurricane heat outside everything. Question is will that work by just heat the part where the charcoal would be place and burning or do I need to enclose the heat unit also. I don't want to detach the heat unit and install it in the bottom part of the Brinkman because I use it for many things.

Does anyone know anything about Shotgun house design?

Hi, How ya'll doing?    I'm planning on building a metal workshop soon. I plan on building a 60' x 40' shop with a Mother-in-law apartment on one end. That space will be 20' x 40'. I've been searching for small houseplans online and haven't found very many. I did see an article on small house design for some homes that were built in New Orleans after the hurricane. It was called a Shotgun house. This would work very well. However, I can't find any floor plans. Does anyone have any ideals where I could find floor plans of the Shotgun house (for cheap)? As the king would have said: Well uuh,  thank ya, thank ya very much.

Homemade un-breakable glass???

Ok, so there's a hurricane coming, and my friend said he's taping his windows. so i'm like: wtf is taping your windows? and he says covering your windows in tape makes them more durable to shattering, if you use masking tape. Masking tape? he said it was some trick that was very well known... he called me an idiot... i got all confused why he expected me to know... i argued why i should know, then he hung up, and got all pissed at me for some wierd reason...so i just need to know: what's the deal with this trick i've never heard of?

What would you take with you in case of catastrophe ...

Hi =o)Kiteman's story made me wonder that :If, in the middle of the night, you had to leave your home very quickly (in a matter of minutes) because of a coming great catastrophe (hurricane, flood, fire, alien invasion ...), and given that everything you'll left will be definitively lost, what would you take with you ?Personally, I think I'd try to take :- my cat (despite that's probably not the most rational decision as I don't have a box to carry her safely)- a bag with my most important administrative and official papers- my USB keys with all my work- my cellular phone- a flashlight- and maybe a bottle of water ...And if remains enough time, I'd probably try to gather as much things as possible into my backpack/rucksack ...What would be your list ?edit : of course, it's obvious to me that none of us would abandon someone he/she loves ! ;o)

Please help me identify this item!!!

A few of these items were found by 3 different volunteers during a beach cleanup in New Jersey, after Hurricane Sandy rolled through, destroying huge sand dunes and leaving debris everywhere.  They are clear yellowish glass tubes or ampules (ampoules) filled with a white powder.  I searched all over the internet for a match to these with no luck, but I did find an article on a large storm that hit NJ in 1962, in which a woman reported,    “We had sea grass everywhere, and there were glass ampules everywhere that contained a white powder. Our father told my sister and me not to touch them.”  Also found on the cleanup were old glass bottles all over the place from the 1920's-1950's so I'd imagine these could possibly be just as old.  Maybe they came from the sea, maybe unearthed from being under the sand for sometime? Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks for looking!

for the women of instructibles (men if you have a significant other see if they could help too!) knives vs scissors!

Earlier today i made a post asking who carries knives on them and as i suspected its pretty much only guys that will walk around with a knife in their pocket (some exceptions apply of course) but as a designer and a guy that likes it when people are prepared for anything i feel this statistic is a little sad. Why not have some sort of tool with you that you can use to open things or make stuff with? As i have been talking to a few of my female friends the idea of having folding scissors came up. Now i am curious would this be way more acceptable to have a pair of folding scissors than a folding knife? I want to hear what you folks think so chime in with your opinions and also if you could use this poll that would be amazing! As always i hope you have a great day, and be safe with all this hurricane business!

Mounting a blade sign to a tent pole—best methods?

Hi there! I'm doing deco for a large event where there will be a line of vendors in pole tents—the kind you typically see at festivals and fairs, with a white top and stuff. I want to see if it's doable to have blade signs hanging for each vendor, mounted to one of the frame poles of the tent. The signs' construction is variable depending on the mounting methodology, I'm thinking the more lightweight the better. One method I was thinking about would be using zip ties to snugly attach a 90 degree bracket to the tent frame pole and hang the sign from the perpendicular arm, but I don't know if zip ties would be sturdy enough. These don't have to withstand a hurricane but do need to be sturdy enough to withstand the occasional nudge or shake by workers/drunk people. I should also emphasize that the tents will be rented, so no permanent alterations can be done (i.e. no soldering brackets to tent frames...) Thoughts/suggestions/possible drawbacks? THANK YOU

Greasemonkey Script: Quick Contest Voting!

For those who are having trouble voting for contests because of the sheer number of entries, I've written this little guy to aid you in your sacred duty. First, you'll need to:Install ScriptThen, head on over to a [/contest/bookcontest/?show=ENTRIES&sort;=RATING page like this], and you'll see 40 entries with a separator half-way down. This shows the script is working. It will *not* work on any page other than page 1. To use it, start rating! After you've rated the first 20 and hit the "barrier", press the button and start rating the bottom set. By the time that you've finished those, the top set will have finished loading. (Don't forget to press the button again!) Overall, this will save hours* waiting for the page to load. So, what are you waiting for? Install ScriptNote: This script is pretty much in an "alpha" stage. Sorry if it leaks or causes terrible hurricanes to come and devour your toes mm... tasty. Also, I'm just throwing this forum post up to make the script public, I'll revise it with a bit more instruction once I'm not so tired. ;-)

Deadly Poisons Are Being Pumped Into Our Homes!

After a conversation with ll.13, I have come to the shocking realization that many people don't know about the deadly poison that is pumped into our water supply. It's called DiHydrogen Monoxide, and it is very dangerous. Look at some of the dangers associated with DHMO.Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.DHMO is a major component of acid rain.Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.Contributes to soil erosion.Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect. The scariest part is that most people don't even know what it is! One poor sap actually ingested it, AND instructed others to do so in his instructable here. You can find out more about this deadly compound at DHMO.org.Be aware and stay alive!

What Littlechef should really be worrying about.

Each year, Dihydrogen Monoxide is a known causative component in many thousands of deaths and is a major contributor to millions upon millions of dollars in damage to property and the environment. Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.DHMO is a major component of acid rain.Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.Contributes to soil erosion.Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect. Those are from an American study. I personally have seen quite a horrible crash after liquid DHMO was sprayed across a road, and DHMO was found in the analysis of the first stones removed from #2 son's kidneys.Proper statistics are hard to dig up, but I have found that DHMO was a direct cause of death in 3842 cases in the USA in 2002. 8.5% of them were children under the age of one.Numbers are harder to find in the UK, but around 500 deaths occur every year following contact with DHMO.(A drop of 4% in DHMO deaths in 2001 was attributed to fewer people visiting rural areas thanks to the foot-and-mouth outbreak, indicating a prevalence of DHMO contamination in England's green spaces.)Rather than scaremongering, you should be warning your friends about a very real hazard in their everyday lives.

Macbook Pro and Following Heartbreak

I have a problem and the people on Instructables are so smart I am hoping someone can advise me.   A year ago I used my Macbook Pro in my kitchen and happened to leave it on the kitchen table over night. I never did this before.  We had a huge storm that night and my roof leaked.  I had it repaired following Hurricane Ike and it had been fine but then something happened (I got it fixed - kind of like locking the gate after the cows get out)  and that one night was the only time I ever left my computer there or had a roof leak that was pretty bad and covered my entire table with water. When I saw my table and computer I thought I would fall out!  I picked up the computer and water ran out of it!  I didn't know then to take the battery out and let it dry out completely and I don't know if it would have worked anyway.  I whined for a day or two and then bought a new Macbook Pro.  Now I can get it to power up and it seems like it is working but there is no display. First I wonder is there a way to get that computer to work again.....Second - Is there a way to recover my videos and pictures even if that computer never works again so I can have the pictures of my best friend who recently passed away and have the pictures and videos of the wildlife I love to photograph? I am a principal so I take a lot of pictures and videos at school and make videos for students and staff.  Previously I was the assistant principal and my best friend was my principal and I have a lot of video and pictures of all the fun stuff we used to do just on off time or at school.  My best friend and principal ended up with a brain tumor and passed away a few months ago. She was young and vibrant and larger than life. The staff I inherited from her would love to see some of our videos and pictures from the days when she was healthy and our principal.  It really bothers me that I can't get my videos and pictures for both reasons, the loss of the videos that would remind me and my staff of fun times with my friend at school and because of the animal videos I feel I have lost that I would love to be able to see and use again.I spend my free time making videos and doing animal photography. I have 10 game cameras set up on my property in East Texas and I love to watch the animals.  All of my previous pictures, video, etc....is on that hard drive. I removed it and I can save to it but I can not open up the picture and videos on it. The new Macbook has updated software and I have not been able to open up iPhoto, IMovie, or IDVD and get my my pictures and videos from it.    I really wish I could get those images and videos back.   I now have that hard drive in a hard case to be used as an external hard drive.   If you read all of this, Thank you! If you have any helpful ideas I would love to hear them.  If you have any interest in the type of videos I make feel free to visit my Youtube channel at FoxysMyGirl@youtube.com  Foxy was my first great dane and I was crazy in love with that dog hence the username!   Thank you! Amy

Switch To Battery Power When Mains Power Is Lost ?

Go-to-War Gear--such catchy hypothetical stuff writes well, but it can turn real all too fast. I have acquaintances in Houston who had less than an hour to leave their homes before the floodwaters overtook them. They had just enough time to throw their important papers into the dishwasher (a handy dry spot for important stuff in a flood), grab their kids, and head for high ground. The recent CaliforniaThe Hunting Shack offers both .45 Colt and .45 Schofield loads (left). Ramshorn gripped STI Texican and Texas Longhorn Arms No. 5 were used for testing both the .45 Colt and the shorter .45 Schofield ammunition. wildfires typically covered 100 meters in 3 seconds. Do you really have what you need to grab and go? Even in America, you can go from full stop to life-threatening crisis in moments.A Proper Foundation: You can measure a man by his boots. I burned through several sets during my time in uniform. My favorite pair of combat boots is more comfortable than house slippers. Combat-proven features make them rugged. Speed laces keep them fast.I wear boots every time I fly. The speed laces let me get into and out of them easily for the obligatory TSA assessment. Keeping the best insoles for standing all day maintained and the drainage vents clear ensure they're comfortable.Air travel is not as much fun as it was once, but an airplane cabin is comfortable enough. Now imagine that same space upside down, dark, and populated with jagged metal, screaming hysterical passengers, fire, and worse. Never remove your footwear in an airplane.Whether the threat is a wildfire, hurricane, tornado, or civil unrest, you will always need proper footwear. Keep your favorite pair of broken-in boots right next to your bugout bag. Think it through and have something similar for each member of your family. Anything built on a faulty foundation can ultimately fail. If you have to move in a hurry that foundation is a good pair of boots.A Proper Bag: A Bugout Bag is pretty stupid without a decent bag. I have a nice utility pack I picked up at our local Walmart for next to nothing. It is lightweight and serviceable enough. However, mygo-to-warbag is a Brazos concealed carry pack from Flying Circle Gear. It's the best I've ever seen. For starters, everything about the Brazos bag is just a little bit heavier than everybody else's. The stitching is more rugged, the material is more substantial, and the zippers are of the big beefy sort. Additionally, the bag is exceptionally well imagined. There are two spacious center compartments large enough to manage a laptop. A small top pocket packs your wallet and incidentals and includes a hidden ID card holder. There is an integral hydration pouch along with four zippered pouches on the sides and a larger version on the front. The outside of the bag is festooned with MOLLE webbing. Thread a pair of ammo pouches in place for your shades or spare reading glasses. They can even carry ammo in a pinch. I can and have lived out of mine for extended periods while travelling, camping, or hiking. The handiest feature on my Brazos bag is the hidden "pass-through" pocket on the back. This discreet compartment is zipper-accessible from either side and is the perfect size to manage a decent gun. Open both sides and you can slide the pack over the handle of a rolling suitcase. Drop in a soft body armor panel and wear the pack backwards and you have an improvised tactical vest.
