What is this red sleeve called in the attached picture of an impeller blade?

Obviously the center red sleeve is for adjustment over minor difference in the shaft diameter.  Can you please tell me the technical term used for the red piece? Thanks.

Do the impeller blades of a centrifugal pump have to be bent?

Hi instrucables...I have been working on a project in which I also need to make a centrifugal pump..I have been wondering that is it important to bend the impeller blades in a particular direction at an angle as they are in normal fans?......I mean the pump does work because of centrifugal force which pushes the water outward so the bending of the blades shouldn't be important right?......I have a bit of confusion in this so please do help me...thanks...

Is ethylene glycol(aka antifreeze) electrically conductive? Answered

I'm unsure if the industry standard engine coolant can have electronics (specifically dc motors) completely submerged in it without any ill effects like shorting going on. By the way, its for an impeller coolant pump.

Coanda effect VTOL or "hovercraft" - making a working model

I am currently working on the design of an impeller driven lifting device utilising the Coanda effect. My 3D printer is of course a great help here but only useful to test the vacuum cleaner assembly that I salvaged for the motor and impeller part. So far it is just I am interesting to see myself instead of reading it on the net but I was wondering if any RC model makers out here would be interested too? I have no clue about the available brushless motors and controllers or how much extra weight for electronics, batteries and so on but could provide the 3D files and design tips if anyone would dare to create a working RC model. Unlike all the designs on Youtube no propeller is used for the lift! Those designs might still use the Coanda effect, or better adjust it's airflow, for the steering but the actual lift comes from a prop. An impeller as used in vacuum cleaner does not provide lift and is more the "real deal". The last real world project that I know of was the Avrocar that was tested during the cold war but never made it into production. Just though it might be an interesting project to build your own "flying saucer" :)

what size pump is best for a hydroponic garden mist system? Answered

I am trying to make a misting system for a hydroponic garden but the pump i have is hopelessly inadequate (impeller type,185gph for 10 small mist nozzles). will a bigger gph output provide the pressure or am i gonna have to drop $300 plus for one of the specialized mister pumps.?

As i need formulas for designing centrifugal compressor which work by motor capacity of 100 watts..1500 rpm...don know what materials to choose...don know impeller and eye diameter...we need to  design to compress the refrigerant which have pressure ratio of 1.3bar..i tried to design the compressor by various methods but failed...help me out..

The refrigerant needs a pressure differance of 1.3bar..single stage...we don hav any ideas about the material to used..the motor we use to run compressor is 100 watts..the speed can b more than 1500 rpm..we had a initial calculation far diameter of the impeller blade..but struck up with the no. of blades..we are terribly confused..so suggest us the procedures to proceed with our requireement..

What is the easiest to build form of human powered propulsion for a cardboard boat(must be made of cardboard)?

Me and a group of people are working on a cardboard boat and the propulsion has to be made mostly of cardboard.  We want to use something better than paddles.  I have been looking around to try and find something that can be adapted out of cardboard and have only found a couple of methods of propulsion. 1. paddle wheel 2. normal propeller 3. impeller 4. hydrofoil wing Anything else that might work that is not in this list would be awesome.  Remember, this is human powered so the RPMs will be low.

Take apart vacuum, see powerful motor, wat do?

So I took apart my old vacuum today and took out the motor with the impeller and everything. I put it into a housing and made a little jet car by strapping it to a skate board, which worked pretty well. I got bored the second I figured out it couldn't push me though. XD Now, I'm just wondering what to do with it. I was thinking maybe a hovercraft, but I don't have a second motor to use for propulsion. (plus, I don't think it would be as fun as one without cords to have to drag around.) So my question is... what should I do with it now? As of now, it doesn't really have a use other than looking and sounding awesome.

Making a centrifuge(?) to pump water? Answered

Am I right in thinking a system draws water through a closed, sealed fan (of sorts) which is rotated on a rod powered by a motor that then pushes the water through an outlet? Ive never heard of an impeller or known anymore than the name of a centrifuge so have no idea, although obviously have basic theoretics devised from reading other instructables. What I am looking to create a DIY pump for 5 litre bottles of water. First prototype, I plan to just have a dispenser where you hold a lever (as in a finger length one, as on water coolers) but then I plan to build it up with cooling and mabye building a unit where I can hook up multiple bottles for an extended, no hassle supply. Obvioulsy I intend it all to be motor powered, although If you have knowledge on a manual pump as a backup system, that would be interesting to learn about.

What should the wires connect to if i took an RC Jet ski servo motor out of it ?

I recently took apart a RC Jet Ski. Within the Jet ski there was a servo for the rudder, a impeller to take out water that had been splashed in side and a motor with loads of wire leading to it, to drive a propeller (Jet ski's don't have propellers but this one does. I Need to know what wire leading up to the RC servo motor do (green and brown). If I were to take the wires and use them on something else whhat shall I controll them with? My first thoughts were that sending an electrical current though the postive, would make it turn one way, and by the RC control, electrical currents could be past though postive and negative to make it turn left and right. I know what all of the other wires do. Thanks Oscar

Advice on A centrifugal pump.

Hello, I recently was given a pet from a friend and after doing some research on what the little guy needs I came to the understanding that the current enclosure he is in is inadequate for his needs. Therefore, I wanted to save up some cash to get him the right size tank set up that I know he deserves. In the meantime though, I have plenty of things laying around the house that I feel could render him a more comfortable habitat till that investment goes through. After more research on the matter, I came to find that for most household aquariums, the bulk of the work falls on your filtration system. That being said, I wanted to go for a Wet / Dry Sump Filter setup as it would be  the most easiest system to setup at home with the various resources laying about. Unfortunately while gravity will be doing the work of siphoning the water from the tank down to the Wet / Dry Filter Media, it will not be moving it back up to the tank. For that I concluded there was no escaping the need of a pump in some shape or form to move that cleaner water back into the tank. From what I read the pump will pretty much determine how big I can make his tank.  So this brings me to my current dilemma. Presented with various motors around the house, I went for the biggest I could find (* excluding the water pumps in our cars mind you). That so happen to be a 1.25 HP Wet & Dry Shop vac that was collecting dust in the garage. I confirmed the motor is working and already came with the impeller attached to it. I was hoping to see if you fine folks could share some wisdom on how I can: 1.) Make it Waterproof. 2.) Adhere the right type of casing around the Impeller and Motor so as to benefit from the  Bernoulli's principle and get the most water moving through my system.  3.) I intend to have this setup not 15~20 feet from where I sleep, this motor is LOUD. I was reading online about creating a sound damping box for it and was wondering what suggestions you guys might have for that? I keep fearing there won't be enough ventilation and it will over heat. ....anything else you would like to throw in. TL;DR :

How do I design an eductor-jet or venturi system to rapidly remove the sand from a pool filter?

A friend of mine regularly changes pool filter sand for his clients and asked me to build a more effective way of doing this. So far I think an eductor would work best check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eductor-jet_pump Requirements: 1. be able to remove a large quantity of sand suspended in water - approximately 50kg (110 lbs) 2. use a pump to supply the motive force - 3/4 hp pump is readily available 3. the pump MAY NOT VACUUM OUT THE SAND DIRECTLY! that would ruin the pump's impellers instantly. It is essential that the pump only provides a motive force in the form of a fast-running jet of water which will create a venturi effect that sucks the sand/water slurry out of the filter. 4. the "vacuum hose" must be between 700mm and 1m long (27 - 40 inches) and about 1inch diameter. 5. The eductor/venturi must be strong enough to suck a sand/water mixture all the way up that pipe against gravity. Check the attached diagram and tell me if my venturi design looks reasonable, also what diameters should I have at points 1 - 6? I also attached a sketchup model of what I'm planning to build Facilities at my disposal: Welder, drill press, cutoff saw, dremel, various grinders, jig saw. I DON'T HAVE A LATHE OR MILLING MACHINE BUT IF IT IS ESSENTIAL I COULD ORGANISE ACCESS TO ONE OK, that's about it. Your commentary is appreciated!
