Copy and Improve

Just Like on thingiverse I think people should have options to make their own copies and improvements of Instructables. People should be able to flag instructables as copies or improvements in case the author didn't realize and when you are browsing instructables the copies should have their own tab like videos and slideshows so that they don't get in the way.

Idea to improve

I got a idea to improve ibles.... I always liked that you can ambed ibles by adding ?embed=flash at the end of the url, but what I don't like about the flash player is that you can't change the size (I also tried by modifying the HTML). It would be awesome if you guys could make that.

Oodammo improvement

I have a cool idea that parodies nerf and keeps you from losing oodammo at the same time! Put a strip of velcro on the front of the rounds (the red bit that faces forward), and when fired, they should stick to your victim's shirt depending on their material. You can easily tell if they have been hit or not with this, and it makes for easy recovery afterwards.

Improving search on Instructables

We're doing another round of improvements to the Instructables search engine. The previous round was here. Help us make it better! Are there search terms or queries that just don't seem to work? Can you provide links or specific examples? Here's an example (that's really been frustrating me):search for:how to play tennisvs.tennisCan you find others? Thanks!

Improving Instructables Search

So, I'd love to have google-style massively aggregated auto-complete in the instructables search. This is search is basically cool, and has already been done. What would be over-the-top awesome, would be if common search terms could correlate to topics. Like, I search for "rope" and get suggestions like "knots", and "climbing", for example. I think that would rock, and help people find related instructables that aren't necessarily tagged with my keywords.

How (not) to improve eyesight

We seem to be getting a rash of Instructables claiming to be able to improve eyesight through simple exercises. Please, people, can these stop? The methods were quackery in 1920, and have been thoroughly refuted numerous times since (for example in 1956 and 2004 ), yet, like holistics, pyramid power, magnetic bracelets and a host of other quackeries, they still do the rounds and fool people into falling for them. Please, people, do a little research before posting supposedly medical treatments.

How to improve Instructables.com !

Hi, I am web designer so I will be specific. These little things bug me but they must drive crazy those ordinary PC users. It seriously degrades the overall user experience on this web ! Here I will point to current problems and show you how to fix it. All following is about EDIT MODE. Constructive critisism, right ? :) UPLOAD IMAGES I know you are using jQuery UI 1.8.11 on this site. Now there is no indicator IF the file uploads at all and/or in case of bigger file/slower connection how long it needs yet ! You have it already in use, when "updating" small progress bar I saw used in images area. Use following it will do miracles: http://jqueryui.com/progressbar/#animated UPLOAD IMAGES AGAIN :) Put buttons SELECT FILES + UPLOAD FILES side by side ! Imagine adding 20 images the upload button goes down. Do not force user to think let alone to do things extra, hide buttons from him ! Thanks. And not to forget ADD there tiny link sor of button to DELETE ALL IMAGES before uploading. What if you choose by accident wrong folder and upload 20 images you do not want to. Sort of CHECK ALL + DELETE function so you can for instance uncheck those you want to leave there. Thanks. CLOSED WINDOW BY ACCIDENT = SAVE This happens. You edit for a while, close window only to realise content is not saved. Could you implement: * AUTO SAVE function after like 5 mins ? * if NOT saved ! = give him JavaScript pop up with "You have unsaved draft. Do you want to continue or save first ?" * IF SAVED = let user close window, no big deal * if saved = add to left small greyish message Saved ... or the button itself * NEW content = button says SAVE NOW * if saved = itself could go grey and have text SAVED = when content changes, turn it orange again ! * the same functionality that GMAIL uses, it is simple REORDER STEP Biggest pain here ! I can have like 20 steps, want to move 1/2 of them for instance. Let us reorder ALL STEPS simply ! Click on the reorder button and offer, let us reorder, offer us small OK button or some function to toggle the "moving" state back to stationary. ADD STEP + vs. INSERT STEP Enlighten me please if mistaken. Do you realise these 2 buttons EACH NEXT to each other do the EXACTLY same thing ? Delete one :) EDIT AREA FOR TEXT The window is too small. Lenghty steps are pain to write and review on such size. Enable resizing handle the same you already have in forums post edit mode ! ERROR WARNING MESSAGES Get rid of those ugly default JavaScript message windows please. Use this and style it to your web orange :) http://jqueryui.com/dialog/#modal-message http://jqueryui.com/dialog/#modal-confirmation Dear Instructables.com look at screenshots for better reference. Do not let me waste two hours of my time figuring out stuff and writing this post. Thanks :) Best regards -- Krsiak Daniel http://linkedin.com/in/krsiakdaniel

Site improvement suggestion (we need meta-categories too, btw)

I have a feature request/suggestion for instructables.com.My suggestion would be to provide a menu bar option (where "Explore", "Groups", "Forums", and "Contribute" are currently) for a user of the site to suggest and request a type of instructable, and provide information about what they'd like to see.I feel that this will provide a number of benefits, and virtually no drawbacks. I will attempt to list a sampling of both if I can... I'm going to begin a couple of terminology conventions to make my idea easier to write out. From here on out, I'm going to refer to REQUESTORS as people that have an idea for an instructable that they either would like someone to pick up and do from beginning to end, or possibly a little assistance on an instructable that they've began and have a stumbling block that they need help with. I'm going to refer to WRITERS as people who write up an instructable, simple as that.-- This will allow people one central location to ask this terrific community for help with an idea that they've got in mind.-- It would serve in a way similar to the "want it" option on ebay does... Only to create a marketplace of ideas. Currently on Instructables, there seems to be, at least in a small way, a reputation system where the quality and quantity of your instructables may be a source of pride and mutual respect for the users. Some WRITER may be looking for ideas to write up, whether from beginning to end, or help solve someone else's stumbling block. They go out to the requests page (or even do a search for it) and see if anything strikes his or her interest.-- If you think about it, a lot of the biggest and best user contributed sites are successful based on the workflow organization, and how efficient they are (wikipedia comes to mind). This idea would further increase the efficiency of instructables.com, allowing for larger rates of growth. I'm not going to place value judgments on growth for growth's sake, but that's for the people that provide this great site to consider and decide for themselves.-- It would help clean out the forum a bit.-- I guess it could also help tip the balance in the "marketplace of ideas" that I mentioned before. Right now in instructables, it's not always easy to tell what a user has to bring to the table in a discussion unless they've got a few instructables out there to judge. If you have a request system, you could look at what kinds of things they ask, and get to know them a little better that way.--in my opinion, one of the biggest neat benefits would be the additional opportunity for isolated users to connect with others who are interested in the same types of things as they may be (or you, or me). This would enhance the learning environment, the sense of community, and benefit everyone.Negatives:--additional complexity--frivolous requests (like that never happens now, right?)--time and expense for implementation--site aesthetics, maybe?I'm certain that my idea could use some tinkering, but that's kinda the spirit of this site, isn't it? I already have some ideas about this along the fringes, but I'd rather wait and see if this gets any kind of response.

New button!

We need a new button on instructables pages...a printer friendly button! Like you see on other sites, you would click it and it would give you a nice, cleaned up, ads and image free, printer friendly version of the 'ible. What do you think?EDIT:aHA! I found it! But Canida is right, it dosen't turn out perfect. And, IMO, it needs to be way more prominent. It was like where's Waldo or something!:D

A Read Later button

Hey! I just want to suggest that the instructables team adds a "read later" (or something similar like "want to do") button that bookmarks an instructable you're interested so you can check it out later because sometimes you want to build a project and don't have the materials on hand,so with a read later button you can come back to the instructable later without a lot of searching for the exact one you were planning on doing. Not sure if this is in the right place so please redirect if it isn't. Thanks!

General New Homepage Improvements

Hey Everyone, It has recently come to my attention though the forums that many of my fellow Instructabrarians, or as caitlinsdad will have it 'Iblers, are not at all happy with the current homepage layout of the website. Now, I'll admit, I'm quite biased towards this. As a new member of the Instructables Staff, I actually got to beta test the new site a week ago and as a long time user of the site, and I quite honestly didn't see anything glaringly wrong with it. Sure it wasn't the original homepage, but I felt the white background and interchanging instructables gave it a much more "Apple-esque" feel. But, after browsing through the forums this morning, I can tell I'm slightly in the minority on this. So, I was really hoping we could start an General All Purpose Site Improvements page with constructive criticism of what you think could be improved. JamesRPatrick has already suggested what kind of things could be improved with the site, and I would really love to hear more. Rather than complain about what you don't like, please tell me what you would like to see improved with the new homepage or features you think could make it better. Look, I'm a fan of the site just like everyone else is and I've been a fan much longer than I've been working here. So if there's something on the homepage you want changed, please tell me because I want to know. As new member of the Instructables team and admin, I can't make any promises that anything can or will be changed on our homepage but I can promise you I will at least bring all of your comments to our next staff meeting. -SHIFT! Improving Signal of FM Transmitter

I recently bought the C. Crane FM transmitter. I have not had much luck with it even after turning up the pot as described on the internet. However, I am not giving up yet. Below are some possible things that I have thought of to improve the sound quality of the radio at a distance from the transmitter. 1. run wire from the antenna of the FM transmitter to the ductwork in my house. I already tried this. I had better luck attaching the wire to the exterior of the ductwork in my basement rather than the interior of the ductwork. 2. create some sort of repeater(s) to get around walls. This device would have to be a receiver/transmitter. 3. create my own FM transmitter with the best parts that I can find. 4. Use a homeplug system. Your suggestions are much appreciated. I don't know a darn thing about electronics so if you have any recommendations for good books that would be nice.

Instructables Website Improvement Idea

We post many instructables utilizing recycled content and in fact we first started using instructables for ideas using found materials.  This sort of works with the search function and/or using a google search. But it also seems like this could be an area of improvement.  Often times recycled design comes from finding a resource first (lumber, plastic, glass bottles) and then thinking creatively about how to re-purpose it into something useful or beautiful. For example, lets say you find a big batch of glass jars and you want to find projects that utilize glass jars.  You can do a search within instructables for 'glass jars' and find some projects.  But depending on how people titled their project or what key words they used you probably will not find all of the relevant projects.  This is especially frustrating when you are working with more obscure materials. Personally we end up running across projects serendipitously that work great, but should be easier to find. edit-moved to feedback upon suggestion

How to Start Home Improvement

Long time reader, first time poster! We bought a 1979 twinhome last summer. Since then, we haven't made many improvements or personal touches to it. Before this, I've always lived in a 1BR apartment or in simply in a bedroom. It's been easy to handle organization, styling, and feeling happy in my space. But now I've got an old-ish home with 3 bedrooms (plus all the junk that my husband brought once we married). I feel overwhelmed. I tend to be OCD about my space but I've been paralyzed for the last 1.5 years because I don't even know where to start. Another hindrance is no knowledge regarding most home-related things. I'm only just learning about certain tools and how to use them. I have many ideas for how I want certain rooms to look, but they're not complete. I don't know how to put together a room. Right now, our bedroom is the gross brown color the realtor painted it and the crappy brown carpet that came with it. We threw in our bed and some filing cabinets as night stands. I would like to add something for more storage space, personality, color, style. Maybe make a headboard. Maybe add a rug under the bed to make the room pop. Anyone have suggestions on how to tackle such a huge project (the makeover of my entire house) without becoming overwhelmed and paralyzed? My current thoughts are to create a strategic plan wherein I tackle one room (and only one room) at a time, making steps of the things I'd like to do (small and achievable). Thoughts?

Small improvements to think about

Hi there, Having just published my longest 'ible so far I generated enough thoughts to write some feedback which may or may not be reasonable. Embedding content: I see that .stl files appear nicely with ability to preview and interact with them in 3D, that's great. It's also fully possible to embed Youtube videos and they work just fine. What I'm missing however is ability to embed a circuit from 123D circuits - one of the reasons I used the tool for my last 'ible was because I thought it would sure be possible to embed something made with an Autodesk service. Nope. Adding the iframe makes the view appear while I'm writing the step, yet disappears in preview/publish. Another service I tried to embed was gfycat - they pretty much solve the issue of huge gifs and therefore long load times by some html5 sorcery (I'm not familiar with that). This could save space/traffic of your servers and decrease page load times. It would also be awesome if uploading an .ino, .txt or any other raw text file would automatically generate a scroll box with the code there maybe even already having the formatting and all. Similarly like .stl generates 3D preview. This would save instructables from another possible wall of text, especially on mobile, because now, when I manually add a scroll box with code in it it still appears like regular text on mobile. As an extra - it would make the work of authors easier as well. Instructable layout: First of all - I understand and support the idea of having a standardized format of instructables, if this undermines that - forget and forgive me. What I propose is a way to add pictures mid-step to avoid walls of text, since somehow making a new step doesn't always feel appropriate or maybe it's just a personal issue I need to get over? Just say if it is so. At least having a way to remove the "Step #:" when making a new step allowing to have pictures mid-step would help. Before you mention it - I know that it is possible to add pictures mid-step using html, but that compromises visibility on mobile, so I try to avoid that. Statistics: After hitting over 50k views in just a few days with my bottle upcycling 'ible I wanted to at least try and replicate that with my other ones. However, when I click the statistics button I have these empty lines next to the visitor count, often the lines with the biggest numbers. While I can guess where most of the views came from it's still massive guesswork and I'm probably wrong in the end anyway. i.e. in that particular case I got over 30k views on my imgur album, my blog post got featured under DIY tag in tumblr and then got some upvotes on reddit as well. I know that your SEO is pretty good from the amount of 'ibles I get as first google results, but fixing statistics has a potential to drive even more traffic for you. I probably forgot something else along the way, but that's it for now. I hope someone bothers to read this and says what she or he thinks. Cheers, Raitis Disclaimer: This is meant as feedback and some ideas for improvement as seen from my point of view, not complaints, not even real critique. Read, think and move forward.

Improvements/Questions on Launcher Design?

Using the picture as a base. What do you think about this design for a smoke/whatever else launcher. The barrel will be made of pvp and have a hinge connecting the two pieces. On the non-detachable side will be a hook, and the detachable side will have a "hook grabber". The hook is some sort of bendable material that will lock around the grabber. The gun part of the pvc will have a slit cut into, like the one in the picture. A spring will be glued down in the butt end, and the opposite end of the spring will have some small object attached to it. This object will also have a very small hook coming off of it. To load the gun you will detach the hook and push in the smoke grenade as far as possible. When you can no longer, you you attach a wire that is coming off of the little black box detailed in the picture to a mechanism that is attached to the trigger. You then close the front part to allow for better travel. When the trigger is pulled, it will detach from the blackbox on the spring, causing the spring to release all of its tension. The smoke grenade will, obviously, be propelled through. So, my questions. Would this seem like it would work viably? How much distance would you say it could get? The smoke grenades would weigh around 11oz . Is there any major flaws? I believe that some sort of spring guide will be needed. Are these possible to construct yourself? I haven't done any projects with springs before, most of my projectiles have been launched via combustion, so this is new for me. Should there be an additions? Also, the way in which the smoke grenade is going to ignite is a striker on the side of it, along with the inner edges of the end of the barrel having a striker on it. When they scrape up at the speed they will be at, they would ignite, and a fuse would catch the flame and ignite the smoke grenade. I have done this on other smaller designs. It doesn't have near a 100% success rate, but it still works the majority of the time. Any suggestions for changing this?

Instructables android (ios) app - improvement ideas

I'm making this topic in order to make people come forward with their ideas for improving the instructables android and ios app. So if you have any ideas for improving the app functionality, overall space requirements, app features or anything else please come forward. As a start I would like to name a few features: - I would really like a "clear cache" button and an option to cache to a SD card; - I have no idea if this is done, immediate project updates between the app and online profile of the user that is logged in; - immediate comment updates when someone comments on a project and all relevant project updates (e.g. when a project is featured), also definable by the user; - a popup that comes up when you press back button on the main screen stating "press again to exit". That is all from me now. I'll be back with more ideas (I think). Join and let's make the app much more user friendly and customizable.

An structable that imitates and improves Wacom's Inkling

Hello all! Just surfing the web for some drawingtablets, that is where I found (duh! d'oh)Wacom Inkling http://www.wacom.eu/index2.asp?lang=en&pid;=9226&gm;=3 It looks cool, but: * I wonder if Wacom is "more compatible" with products they sell, in other words, buy Inkling buy other Wacom related products to make it compatible with each other. *Pen, pressure sensitive, but can you swap the inkleader with any you like? Especially(correct?) (I'm Dutch ;) ) the pen. When the ink has dried up, you don't want to buy another Wacom pen which takes ages to ship. It doesn't seem that hard to recreate something similar without my assumptive drawbacks. But is there a whizzkid that would like to make and instructable like this? Please? :) Regards Thomas

A Small Improvement On TheRacker's Kne'x Gun

TheRacker and I were talking in KIChat and he said he wasn't happy with his Knex gun. The pin couldn't hold a lot of bands because he couldn't use one of KK's pins. This was because of a KK pin wasn't long enough to hit the bullet from the mag. We were thinking of ideas that could be done to fix it. We both had the idea of moving the mag back a little compacting the gun and making it compatible for a KK pin. This is the result. I didn't find it needed to build the rest of the gun, I only built the part that mattered.

Post what features, functions or changes you would like to see when using Instructables.com

The recent upgrades to this website caused some confusion as well frustration for those who though long requested features would be included. It seems that neither our code monkeys, nor those suggestiong changes and improvements are aware of the many requests and suggestions we made over the years. So let's help them out by posting what we think is bad, needs improvement or simply what we need to properly make use of this great website.Maybe within the next 3 to 10 years some might get implemented ;)I go first, shall I?1. DesignThe recent changes seemed to be solely target on people with little skills and using tablets / mobile phones. As common practise in standard forums all over the web the user should have the option to change a different layout based on the device he uses.Preferably with an automatic detection that can be overruled in the settings on the YOU pages.Someone on a small tablet will certainly welcome huge fonts and massive buttons.Maybe even the many "hidden" functions that only appear when scrolling or doing other weird things. But if you are like me and use a proper PC on a 4K screen this layout is not really usable at all.Nothing fits, nothing can be made to fit - all is fixed and pre-defined.If you really try to improve the user experience than don't block those out who started all this and still use a PC for most of their online needs!Adding different layouts is not really a hard thing unless you insist on custom made software to run all this here - than it takes efford to show you care about basic desing features!2. Forums and questionsUp until recently we had different sections for our forum topics.By far not enough but at least for most things there was a right place. Now it all one big mix of everything and still no proper sorting is possible.Topics/Questions that are a few days old wander down the list to be never seen again unless you love to scroll or follow only your Email notifications.Worst of all we now can't even see who made the last reply. The sorting inside is much better but still we lack custom sorting options or at least highlighting post/replies made after the last check of the topic. Not userfriendly at all, just much more complicated to find what you need - unless of course it was only done to get more topics and questions without caring what happens to them.3. EmbeddingAdding Links to other website is mostly fine but when it comes to pictures or videos I feel reverted back into the 90's.Everything must be done the way the developers here think is best. You want to explain something in detail with a lot of pics within your text to make it easy to follow and understand?Good luck as it will only work if you are fluent in basic HTML.A different font to really highlight something or even colored text? No way....Prefer to host your images offsite at a proper hoster?Again hope you know your HTML and that your hoster offers direct image links that are permanent...Time has moved on and user might not like to be treated as child and being constraint in the worst possible way.If someone want an image within the text then let him do so by drag and drop, better even to allow the text to flow around the image - really nice to explain an image with text on the side instead of at the top or bottom ;)The library is quite nice - if you like obscured filenames and no chance of sorting images by Instructables/topics/questions.Just the easiest way for the programming: by date with autogenerated filenames - back to the future ROFL4. EditingMade a spelling mistake in a reply or topic/question? Bad luck...Need to add some vital info to something you just posted? Why would you want to do that?Want to simply paste something you wrote up in Notepadd++ or some other editor? Great, if you like it all messed up...Even expecting to have editing options while writing is downgraded to less than what you Email client would allow for a funny bday greeting....Again: We are no longer in the 90's!You want users to be active and enjoy this website than give than what they started asking for many years ago!5. SortingAs mentioned before we need proper sorting options for replies, questions, topics...What is the point of having an active topic that runs down to page 4 or 5 of the list?Where is the most basic info in this list? Like who did last action, when did it happen? Why is it still impossible to quickly see the last replies/postings?With sometimes over 30 postings and even more replies it is next to impossible to find the stuff. If sorting options are above paygrade then at least iclude highlighting everything done after the last visit of this topic/question.And while at it, please give us back the forum sections and add some more ;)6. FeedbackAs said too many times: The developers/code monkeys need to find a way to communicated with each other and the users here! Can't even count how many times I heard things like: "We are working on it", "I will forward this to the developers", "We might include this in a future upgrade"....Seriously: What is the point of having (had) a bugs and feedback section if everyone now claims this all totally new and that nothing was ignored?Again to me it looks like "Let's do some majoy changes as my kid struggles to use this website on the tablet, while at it let's also hide some features and functions without announcing any changes we make!"It is confusing to say the least and I fail to understand why this website should be only optimised for people who can barely use a mobile device. Some of the users here might actually want to be able to have modern features that do beyong big buttons and oversized text.7. Featuring and contestsWhen I started here a featured Instructable was something that was standing out from the rest.Only in a few cases external links or certain providers of parts where present. Now even totally incomplete and impossible to follow Ibles find a way to get featured.Same for stuff that was done (better) at least 20 times before. Some spelling mistakes might be fine but if I struggle to understand what the user was writing I wonder how whoever featured it figured it all out.It often seems all that counts is a catchy header and some nice pics on the first two or three steps is enough :(But lately far too many "Instructables" are popping that not only get featured almost instantly but also only exist to advertise for a product or service - usually even indicated by the "username" behind it and the "homepage" linking to shop...Desperate much for money and not even honest enough to clearly indicate the advertisements or to push them into an advertising section?Similar story for contests :(Every now and then I get an invitaton to help judging a contest.Considering I only get to see the runners for the finals I often wonder how they got there. Some entries that (at least in my opinion) really stand out are not even in the list, instead I get some crappy ones with little efford for the workmanship or presentation - just a catching title and some nice pics. And when going for counters I see another problem:Some of the entries get featured and of course attract much more attention this way.I think it would be only fair to leave all contest entries untouched until a contest is over.It is hard enough to understand how the selection of winners made it into my ballot but copies, bad stuff and so on should not make it.And the fair go with featuring would mean the hits for an entry are not faked by being featured - feature it when the contest is over1 ;)And no, I don't try to insult or offend anyone here, just being honest and direct.Angry? Sure.Disappointed? Of course. Why? Because it could have been all soooo much better if someone would have cared to listen....

Improvement-impaired dude needs book reccomendations!

My boyfriend would like a book on home improvement for his birthday. Here's the thing: I normally handle all of that stuff and have a couple of yard sale books that I love. He refuses to look at them. He wants his own book. God love him, the dude can't even change a switchplate. Any book recommendations that are suitable for beginners yet, um, manly? Thx!
