incomplete work

My science teacher was telling us one day about how he came to hate incomplete work. he had surgery on his appendix one day (for unknown reasons) and when he woke up his appendix was finished but the doctor didnt close him up. he called the doctor in but he said "oh i just forgot." he fired that quack and got a new doctor to close him up. tell me what you think of this story and also think of incomplete work...

Incomplete old Knex L85

Here is my Knex L85. It works, but I don't feel like finishing it. Its a pretty cool gun. Non removable magazine, true trigger, no sight or stock attached yet. Its very comfortable to hold and play around with. I believe its also the first L85 on Instructables, even though its not finished.  Tell me what you think!

Stop with the incomplete knex contests...

Ok. So this is something that has been bugging me for AGGEESSS now. All of these Knex contests, hosted by people who clearly no nothing about knex. (Sorry for being a bit harsh) And also, with a massive lack of presentation, pictures, and/or prizes. I mean, in about the last week, I've seen at least 10 knex competitions and challenges. Well sure, maybe the odd knex competition or whatever, but not loads of comptetitions that are stupid. Sorry to the guy who did this, but I mean, someone made a ball machine contest, no presentation, picture or prize, with 3 random categories. I mean, theres nothing new, nothing challenging, so whats the point? Maybe you thought this whole topic was harsh and mean, but see the other side of it. STOP POSTING STUPID CONTESTS!

Can I create a new instructable on a progressing, but incomplete project?

I would like to create an instructable on a project I am just beginning and report on it as it progresses. Is that acceptable or is it preferred to create the instructable only on completed projects?

Instrucables that don't actually give instructions...

So I assumed that the purpose of this site was to provide guides and instructions for people to be able to do/make the things that the Instructables are about.  Am I wrong in this assumption?  If I go to an Instructable for "make your own SLR camera from scraps around your home", I expect to find instructions on how to make what the post is about, not a video of some guy saying "I'm not going to give you any instructions, tips, or hints, but I've posted a video of me making one myself without any explanation, and you can watch that." A video of someone making something with absolutely no explanation, tips, hints, help, or instructions isn't really an Instructable, is it? I'm asking because of this post: https://www.instructables.com/id/7FT-Gundam-Ultimate-Papercraft-1/ The author of the post has posted a few pictures and a few videos that don't show anything besides him talking about why he made the project, and time-lapse videos of him putting it together.  In the videos, it actually shows him using the computer generated, printable files necessary to put the project together, which he didn't bother posting in the Instructable.  The entire post seems more like a brag posting of "Look what I can do" instead of being an actual Instructable, because there were no files provided to make your own, no instructions provided on how to do it yourself, no tips or anything. I'm asking here because, when asked about it, the author of the post said (and I quote):           visualspicer (author) says:           Please forward your complaints to the staff of Instructables.com who personally invited me to post this project here in its current format. So my question is: Is the staff of this website inviting people to come post Instructables without actually giving instructions for how to make the things they're posting about?  If this is the case, is this site going to degrade into just a bunch of bragging photos and video of people saying "look at the cool stuff that I made, but don't bother trying to make it yourself, because I'm not giving you the instructions."?

Lame Slideshows

The increased visibility/accessibility of the "slideshow" option seems to have resulted in a large increase in the number of useless/non-instructive/incomplete/spam/whack-a-doodle postings. I'm tired of wading through heaps of crap just to find real, honest-to-goodness Instructables: step-by-step instructions for making/doing things. I have no beef with the slideshow format itself; it is quite appropriate for some projects, but the content has recently been predominantly junk. I regard it as littering up the site and polluting the "mission" of Instructables. I'm just grumbling here, as I have no real suggestion for a solution, except that perhaps the standard for approval of postings needs to be higher.

Moving Forum post to Answers- Flagging

Noticed that Forum posts can only be flagged {Inappropriate, Incomplete , Spam} but not "Wrong Category". Would be nice to have the "Wrong Category" option also.  There are forum posts that should be in the Answers section, not bumping discussions down in the Forums. Could this be possible as a future site update?

Feature request - copy step.

Could you add the ability to copy a step from one instructable to another? For instance, I do a lot of work with the ATtiny chips. Each instructable has the same instructions telling how to load the chip definitions into the Arduino IDE and program the chip. Without this the instructable would be incomplete, and it is a lot of work to copy it every time. Thank you JRV31

Publishing unbuilt designs

I've got a project that I've been designing in SketchUp (a camper platform for attaching a full size tent to a small pickup truck) that I will definitely post on Instructables when, and if, I build it. The thing is, I've never built something like this before and I would really like to have opinions on the design before I start cutting wood. What is general consensus on publishing unbuilt designs? It's not really a collaboration, although that might be a good model for what I'm doing, it's just an incomplete project that I would like to solicit comments on before construction.

Plagiarism fix - add another option to the flagging feature

An instructable was recently featured wherein many of the viewers of this instructable recognized the images from a different Author, and no credit to the name of the original author. I tried to flag it for admin, but there are only "Wrong Category", "Inappropriate", "Incomplete", or "Spam" as options to flag with. Although I don't want to add more work to your plate, I think if the community can flag a directly plagiarized ibble, that would be best. Here are the posts:  Original by KaptainSkarlet:  https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-gorgeous-Dragons-Egg/ Copycat:  https://www.instructables.com/id/Really-Cool-Dragon-Eggs-for-Easter/ I think keeping the Instructables community free to copy is fine, but not direct ripping of the same images another author used. And not without crediting the author. Thanks!

Flag request: "other"

I'm sure this has been suggested elsewhere, but nothing came of it, either way, and it has come up again in a conversation with another member by PM. Currently, Instructables can be flagged for three reasons - "inappropriate", "incomplete" or "spam". Whilst they cover most eventualities, I would like to propose a fourth flag option: "other". Of course, "other" is rather vague, so its use would require details - clicking it would open a comment or message box to allow a brief description of the reason for the flag, whether it is the original source of a project that has been ripped off from elsewhere, or a concern regarding the safety or legality of a posting. I don't know coding, so I don't know if such a system is possible with this site. If it isn't, then can I suggest that a fourth flag option be added called "Legal issues", or some other catch-all phrase that covers issues of intellectual ownership and site liability.

Where can I find instructions for the K'nex Stepper Lift from Knex set 32049? Answered

I know this has been asked before, but the link to the instructions for the K'nex Stepper Lift in Shadowman39's guide doesn't work on my computer. I really need a more complete picture of how it works. I remember that I built it once from an obscure instructable, but I can't remember which one it was (besides, that instructable was incomplete, anyway). If someone knows where to find the instructions aside from knexinnovation.net, PLEASE let me know (or mail the file to my instructables inbox...or something!) P.S.: If the instructions are not available, I'll just have to do my best at recreating it from the few pictures I have seen...and then maybe make a proper instructable to document it!

Bike conversion ideas for a semi-noob

Having just rescued my nice GT from my parents' place, my old junker bike is now surplus to requirements. (I like to have a "spare" bike, but now I have three bikes it's literally a fifth wheel. And sixth.)I've wanted to build an electric bike or a recumbent for a long time, but despite fiddling with bikes for a while I'm still just a competent novice. A competent novice with very limited tools, in fact. Therefore I'm looking for a project like this uber-simple electric-assist (incomplete) or the no-weld recumbent. If anyone knows of any other projects like these, I'd like to see them.Pictures of the bike to follow- it's a fairly generic short-frame mountain bike, probably intended for dirt jumping as it's got a short geometry, thick downtube and a low seat/short seat tube. The front fork is a "suspension" fork with about 1" of travel and too much preload to be any use on roads, everything else is standard.

Standards for being featured dropped?

This is anecdotal, since obviously I don't review every single featured Instructable. I just happened to notice two recently that have some nice photos but otherwise seem kind of "incomplete". Absolutely no offense meant to the authors, I'm sure they put a lot of effort into these projects, but the documentation seems lacking and not up to the standards of "someone should be able to reproduce the work": https://www.instructables.com/id/Colorful-LED-Christmas-tree-automaticlly-flashing/ https://www.instructables.com/id/Functional-Nintendo-Controller-Coffee-Table/ The latter especially has nice photos of what is obviously a really nice build, but totally lacks a materials list, wiring diagram, cut instructions for the wood - all information that's essential to actually do the build. There are a couple (nice) comments pointing this out. Just wanted to point this out - not sure if there's someone new on the community team who might be featuring things just because they have nice photos, without checking the text, or if there's been a change in the standards for featuring that I'm unaware of.

Can someone Explain to Me how Wifi Antenna Extenders work? Answered

Could someone help explain to me How wifi antenna extenders work? Vortex cooling / heating tubes

I am currently gathering information about vortex tubes for my repulsine project. There are plenty to choose from on a commercial base but I struggle to find any technical drawings with proper dimensions. Several home made varities can be found as well but wither with poor performance or incomplete drawings. So I was thinking that someone here either uses a commercial product at home or work and might be able to take some basic measurements for me? I am most interested in the relation between inner tube diameter and lenght for the hot and cold ends as well as the size for the vortex chamber itself. If there is an orifice used on the cold end the hole diameter would be required as well. My aim is, based on a properly working original, to create a device that might be less efficient but can be used without a compressor. Would like to see, correct transfer of dimensions given, a vortex tube like system was used in the repulsine. Some old documents state that there was a "seperator" which removed "heavy air particles" and created a temperature differencial between top cone of the repulsine and the wave disks.

This Instructable should be fully reviewed and possibly removed, as should the author

I am surprised that this is a featured instructable your team should review the instructable and consider removing it https://www.instructables.com/id/Gold-recovery/?&sort;=ACTIVE&limit;=40&offset;=40#DISCUSS First, it involves the use of chemicals that can be very dangerous to the persons and the environment. The author provides no instruction on how to protect either Second, at some point in the comment section a reader points out that the process is incomplete. He does so in a very matter of fact way.  The author accuses the reader of attacking him and publishes the reader's name, the name's of his parents, the readers phone number and his address. Wait What!?!  Seriously, IMHO this should get the author banished from Instructables. Thirds, Further down in the comments someone from "Africa" (not a Nigerian prince) makes a post stating that he represents a group selling gold bars in bulk for cash and provides information on how to contact him to make a purchase. At this point I stopped reading.  I have been a subscriber of Instructables for some time now.  I love the information, creativity and passion to build that it inspires.  However, the fact that this particular Instructable has been FEATURED worries me that the community managers are not properly reviewing the articles that they are using to promote this community.

What are some ideas to build AN ULTIMATE RAT CAGE built from my 8'' x 10'' screened in porch?

Inappropriate Incomplete Spam I do not have much time to spend with my rats anymore and as such I would like to build them a much bigger area for play and exercise in. Here are some factors I need to contend with: 1. I live in florida and it gets HOT, how can I build a cooling down area? 2. What substrate for the bedding should I use? It has to be cheap and I am planning on shoveling and hosing down the area for cleaning. 3. What little features can I provide to entertain them (aka: "enrichment") 4. I would like a little grass area for them, would this destroy the concrete floor? 5. This can be really cool, what would YOU do with all that space? Keep in mind the name of the game is to make cleaning as easy as possible while creating a rattie wonderland. And to answer your question that must be brewing, I only have 6 rats. Possibly when I am down to three rats I will take them back inside and use the outside as a play area or fostering rescued rats. Oh, and I also have a 4''x4'' storage area that could also be utilized(it's attached to the porch), maybe I'll put them there when it's time to sleep.

Knex dock

Greetings people. I'm T-Nod. I just joined this group, even though I have been active on Instructables for many years now. You might or might not have noticed me, for even though I've been here for so long I have only posted 17 instructables (almost all of them Knex related), with most of them being 'average' to say the least, and most of them were slideshows with incomplete instructions. One of the few things of my that did recieve a lot of positive criticism though, was my Knex dock, designed for my DS. It wasn't all that special, but it sure was one of the best Knex docks out there. And I did win the third place in the Knex contest with it, along with a nice patch. And today I saw it has reached 4.95 stars, which is an amazing rating! Looking at how good the dock was, I decided to design another dock. But not for a DS this time. I was thinking of a dock for a book. I like reading a lot, and I figured out it would be easier to read if I had a dock with it. No need to put your finger on the pages, easier holding, reading handsfree. Plus, Knex docks have in my opinion a very high coolness-factor. :-D But before I start, I want to know; is it worth trying? Is there anyone who is interested in this? Would anyone want to build it? Are there many book readers and knexers on Instructables? tl;dr, I'm making a knex dock. Interesting, yes or no?

Help me make a bookcase door to a secret room

Inappropriate Incomplete Spam Scooby-Doo movies became famous for it, spy movies have been known to have them, Batman had one, and yet... I used to live in Kansas, before I moved to Arizona, and while I was there I visited a place called Science City. It is basically an indoor amusement park with funky gizmos like a hologram of a fist sized diamond behind a painting, and a rocking chair that doubles as a power generator. But the thing that interested me most was a wall that revolved at the center, becoming a door that would lead to another room. I asked some of the employees about it, but it must be a trade secret since they all said they couldn't, or wouldn't tell me. One of them even denied the existence of such a wall! Ever since then, I have seen various recreations like this in spy and mystery movies. I think that this would be the coolest thing ever. You see, when you turn the wall around, one side is a fake bookcase, the other is a blank wall. It turns 180 degrees, then you have to turn it the other way. I want one of those in a cabin that my family is building up in the mountains. Since it would have to be custom built, I would need a very good idea of where to start. Anything in the way of advice, answers, or even speculations anyone could give me would be absolutely great. Sincerely Yours, Zelback1

Jayefuu as Instructables' Artist in Residence

Thursday saw the end of two of the most fun filled months of my life. Since the beginning of February I've been an artist in residence at Instructables' office in San Francisco. First impressions? The office was unlike any I'd ever visited or heard of. An open plan 2nd floor office above a deli and a night club on 2nd street, Instructables' headquarters is home to a team of 25 young and enthusiastic staff. It's not like your average software company either, no desk is the same and each is covered in or surrounded by a mix of complete and incomplete projects, or is in itself a project. Those above mentioned staff are all friendly. The office has the same tight knit community feeling that I have felt part of as a non-staff member using the site. As an artist in residence I was given no direction other than to be creative and pursue and finish projects that interested me. The environment was hugely beneficial as a maker. At home I feel that I have to explain why I want to make something. “But you can buy that!” I am often told. At Instructables I was surrounded by people who understand that making is a passion, that it's important and ideas quickly develop and grow as enthusiastic friends chime in with over the top but all too often adopted suggestions to improve projects in progress or create new projects. There doesn't need to be a reason to create something to amuse, educate or just show off. While in residence I worked on a bubble machine, a giant chess set to play in Eric and Christy's kitchen, an improved laser cut jenga pistol, a cupcake decorating stencil, several educational instructables as well as writing Perl to simplify several tedious admin tasks performed by the editors. My most used tool was the laser cutter. If I had to choose a favourite new skill that I learned, I'd be hard pressed to choose between the skills I developed with a DSLR and lighting, and how to drive a forklift. The best piece of insider information I picked up.... I know who the next artist in residence will be! Given a chance, I'll definitely be back. I love the staff, I love the city and the nearby climbing is exceptional! James

How can I Scavenge/Salvage a crystal+audio transformer from an old radio (or anything!) for an AM transmitter project? Answered

Hi! My name's Bashu, I'm 18. My electronics skills are pretty feeble but I think I'm trying to get a better idea about how they work.. by making projects! old homeschooler reflex. So my brother has an old 1982 lovable Toyota Tercel named Humphrey. Humphrey was passed on to my brother the way God or Toyota made him.. with an AM radio. This is pretty rad if we want to hear Chinese/Spanish/Italian radio jockeys (they have really nice vocal rhythms), except usually we don't for some reason. So I wanted to make an AM transmitter. I found a project on here. https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-simple-AM-transmitter/ Looks pretty simple. Requires an approx 1 mhz crystal and an 8-1000 ohm audio transformer, which I was prepared to buy, except then I heard about salvaging them from cheep radios! VERY EXCITED WAS I! I love reusing old things that were once very incredible (taking songs out of the air? Magic) and would otherwise go to the dump. Alors, I bought an old clock-radio from a thrift-store, opened it up and looked inside, and realised I had no freakin' idea what the crystal or audio transformer would look like. I then decided to enlist the help of the only community I thought would know. You! My question is, if I wanted to find a 1 Mhz Crystal and a 8 into 1000 ohm audio transformer, without buying them, where would I be likely to be able to salvage them, and what will they look like? Pictures of the radio I bought and opened up are attached, in case they are on there and easily spottable. I don't mind digging. Thank you very much for any advice you have! I am also thinking it would be really cool to have an instructable dedicated to salvaging components from various equipment. I found a wiki on it, but it's somewhat incomplete and has no photos whatsoever.

(it seems to be slightly brighter than the 9 LED tactical flashlight i had) but I'm not sure. i have no light meter. the LED itself is (as advertised) is CREE (i don't believe that either but again, I'm not sure).   i would like to make portable HID flashlight. my plans are to: BUY: 6V LANTERN HID KIT (BULBS) HID BALLAST 12V BATTERY (I"m not sure where i could find a suitable 12-15V 35W [or more] battery that will fit nice and snug in the lantern with room for the ballast. the battery should last almost a week with some moderate use.) i think a drill battery would work. i will take the original light out and replace it with the HID. then, i will need to find a place for the slim ballast [but where???] . then,i need to find a battery (i think a 12V drill battery should work [will a 14.4V drill battery with the case off fit in the modified 6V lantern flashlight? if so, where can i buy a affordable and well suited 12V-16V battery?] if there isn't any small, powerful (and preferably cheap), battery in existence? [4 by 4 by 2 array of AA rechargeable batteries seems promising and so does 6^2 by 2 array seem promising. 6 by 6 by 2 AAA] will the ballast and lamp work with less power (6W-34W)? is there a simple and small ballast circuit schematic i can follow? i never found one. so i assume no. :-( also is the 5000K neutral white, warm or cool? (i think it is the closest to neutral white with a VARY slight blueish tint) i think i got a grasb on this and i want 6000K (i want something led white but still bright and useful enough to easly see what i'm doing on campouts)

Typo-Squatting (Misspelled Domain Name scams)

Here's a Very interesting article about of of the most common internet problem: Typo-SquattingTypo-squatting is the practice of creating domain names that are often misspelled names for bigger brands. For example: Runescape is a popular free MMORGP (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game). There are sites which names are misspelled versions of Runescape. A few I encountered while playing:RuenscapeRunscapeRiunscapeThese misspelled sites are mainly used for either- online scams- pay by click ads - which feature popular search terms for the original site. The misspelled site gets payed every time someone clicks on one of those.- Spyware and AdwarePopular targets for this practice is google, apple, microsoft,For example, I will demonstrate the case of the iphone:from McAfee:By the end of 2007, at least 8,000 URLs using the word iphone will be registered, according to a well known domain expert. The most valuable iphone.com is owned by Apple itself, but when Steve Jobs announced the product early in 2007, Apple didn't own the iphone domain yet. One expert estimates that Apple paid at least $1 million to buy that piece of valuable Web real estate. Among the 8,000 registered URLs incorporating iphone are community fan sites, rumor and hack sites and, of course, scam sites. Freeappleiphonesnow dot com claims to offer free iPhones and variants that don't even exist (like the iPhone "shuffle" and "nano".) The URL is nothing more than a redirect to royalsweeps dot com . When we tested the site, we received debt consolidation offers, get rich quick solicitations, "free" cell phone prizes and other questionable e-mail. Many of the iphone-related domains are misspellings, or typos. Iohone dot com, for example, was registered on January 9, 2007, the day Apple officially announced the iPhone. In August 2007, the site consisted of pay-per-click ads for iPhone-related Web sites. Microsoft says that on an average day more than 2,000 domain names are registered that contain Microsoft trademark terms.According to the US Government Accounting Office, at least 8.65% of all domain names are registered with false or incomplete Whois information, a practice that makes domain squatting easier. More recently, in September 2007, the managers of the .eu top level domain suspended 10,000 domains registered by a Chinese woman who was accused of being a cyber-squatter. The first two Images are from the domains Freeappleiphonesnow and Iohone The other images are from microsoft dot cm and another website that results in 482 spammy emails a week. The last image is from McAfee

Windows XP Registry Repair

If your Windows XP has landed to a position where it has become nearly impossible to efficiently do any work, or it frequently crashes up or the system has obtained a habit of being hanged up in the middle of crucial activities. All these are symptoms that the registry has caused serious errors and the system requires registry repair. Occurring of registry errors is quite common in those operating systems which programs through Windows technology because as the system is being used, many programs are being installed and uninstalled, various hardware applications are added and removed, data files are created and deleted and various other such functions. A registry can be defined as the central point on any PC and is responsible to store the entire data which constitutes the core elements of the operating unit plus each and every other setting that is required during the course of using it. The time at which the data saved within the registry becomes corrupt, errors starts piling up in the back of the system which eventually surfaces with the passage of time. This can also be the main cause behind the slow startup of the Windows, random occurrences of Windows shutdown or several program errors that occur randomly and frequently. A Windows XP registry repair becomes necessary as the system ages because the quantity of programs and applications operated on it increases too. This increase in programming capabilities will create errors within the registry because of the accidents or mistakes made during the programming process. An example of this is that when the user is installing a new application and accidently the system turns off due to power failure or accidently unplugging of it. Since the downloading was still under process and was stopped abruptly, there are chances that some installation files are stored and incomplete configuration settings is now present in the registry because no way was provided to it to roll back to the application. These files, since are of no use for the system occupies not only space on the registry but can also create errors within it. In the course of performing a Windows XP registry repair, there are several options for doing this. The first way can be do it yourself by the use of primitive tools provided free of cost. The second option can be to buy registry cleaner software through which the registry will be cleaned automatically or the third way can be to render the services of a PC specialist and let him do the work for you. All the three options have some pros and cons in it. Performing a registry clean by yourself can be quite complicated as it is a very large area and fixing errors at your own might take a lot of time. Purchasing a registry cleaner on the other hand, is a good option if it has the features of analyzing and fixing the whole registry rather than certain area only. Rendering services of a specialist is also a good option but, it might be quite expensive touching to the limits of buying a new system in that price. Combing Arduino Sketches

Hello, I have a question. I need to combine my code for my Arduino Webserver with the code for my Parallax card reader. When I combine them only the RFID card part works? Can someone help me debunk this. I orginally wanted it to be when someone swiped a valid RFID card, that it would launch the webserver? I don't think that's possible though. Here's my code: #define RFID_ENABLE 2   //to RFID ENABLE #define CODE_LEN 10      //Max length of RFID tag #define VALIDATE_TAG 1  //should we validate tag? #define VALIDATE_LENGTH  200 //maximum reads b/w tag read and validate #define ITERATION_LENGTH 200 //time, in ms, given to the user to move hand away #define START_BYTE 0x0A #define STOP_BYTE 0x0D #include #include char ssid[] = "*******";      //  your network SSID (name) char pass[] = "*********";   // your network password char tag[CODE_LEN];  int readLed = 4; int invalidCardled = 5; int validCardled = 6; int ipCam = 7; int doorLock = 8; int alarm    = 9; int status = WL_IDLE_STATUS; WiFiServer server(1025); void setup() {   Serial.begin(2400);    Serial.println("Please Swipe Your Card.");   pinMode(RFID_ENABLE,OUTPUT);    pinMode(readLed, OUTPUT);   pinMode(validCardled , OUTPUT);   pinMode(invalidCardled, OUTPUT);   pinMode(ipCam, OUTPUT);   pinMode(doorLock, OUTPUT);   pinMode(alarm, OUTPUT);       if (WiFi.status() == WL_NO_SHIELD) {// check for the presence of the shield:     Serial.println("WiFi shield not present");     while(true);        // don't continue    // attempt to connect to Wifi network:   while ( status != WL_CONNECTED) {     Serial.print("Attempting to connect to Network named: ");     Serial.println(ssid);                   // print the network name (SSID);     // Connect to WPA/WPA2 network.
