Plastics in the Automotive Industry

This isn't an in-depth tech article or anything but it's interesting to realize just how much the auto industry runs on plastic: http://www.paxonplastic.com/the-automotive-industry-welcomes-a-plastic-future/ I even read that a 3d printed car might be hitting the market as early as the end of this year. Not sure if that's just a rumor but it doesn't seem far off.

Internship Search

Hello, I am in search of companies that offer internships to high school graduates going into college as a way to gain experience. The problem is that companies I want to intern for all want (Idaho Power, Union Pacific Railroad) college experience and previous college education in that field. I am primarily interested in the industry side of things, because I want to see how things work and experience them myself. The industry is considered “dangerous” so therefore I have not been able to find any companies willing to offer internships to high school graduates. I really don’t care about pay, because I am only interested in education as of right now and this would be very valuable. I would prefer local companies, but I would be willing to go out of state. What I really want to know is: How can I convince companies to let me shadow an employee or be an unofficial intern? Do you need documentation from companies that you interned with them when writing college resumes? What sort of companies would be interesting (Idaho Power, Union Pacific, Norco, etc.)? Anything else you may be able to suggest. Thanks!

Transition to a Post-Industrial World

Our friends at the CIRCUS Foundation would like your help, in the form of a few paragraphs speculating on our post-industrial future. You're obviously the perfect people to weigh in on this topic - Instructables is full of green, reusable, energy-saving, upcycling projects, so you're definitely in the headspace - so what do you think the future will look like? Share your ideas in 500 words or less. From the original post: Bridges to the Post Industrial PlanetOur future well-being requires that in twenty years' time we should be living in a manner that differs markedly from the way we've lived in the past century and a half. It seems likely we'll consume less energy, use physical resources more sparingly, moderate the waste we generate, make fewer long journeys, rely more on local produce, repair things we'd currently replace, share objects we might currently own. Other implications are less obvious but potentially significant. Will be the role of corporations change? How will our societies be governed? What civil liberties can we expect? The better we're able to imagine a post industrial world, the better we can identify the barriers to getting there and prepare bridges to get over them. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS We're inviting people to write a few paragraphs, no more than 500 words, outlining the greatest difficulty you think we face in making the transition to a post industrial world. This might be a technological issue, a cultural barrier, an economic factor or something else. If you have ideas about how the barrier could be overcome go ahead and outline them too.Send your submission to open@CIRCUS-foundation.org along with a couple of lines about who you are. The results will be compiled in a book that will be published free on the web and form the basis of a seminar to be held in London later in 2008.

Bubbling LED Hanging Industrial lights???

There is a project I have been vigilantly searching for on instructables and google. I remember seeing it on here a couple of years ago and now cannot find it anywhere.. The project consisted of Industrial cage jar lights, LEDs, Vegetable oil, and a fish tank pump and some other supplies.. The LED lights would be submerged in the jars with vegetable oil and   the fish tank pump supplies air into the industrial lights and the oil bubbles..  I would love to find this project. I have been itching to find it for the past year or so. If anyone knows where to find this project, Please pm me.. I would appreciate it immensely.. Or if anyone knows where to find the Industrial cage lights i would appreciate any help in this matter.. Thanks..

Explore the Age of Industry: Mechanicrawl 2008

The Long Now Foundation is sponsoring an event called the Mechanicrawl which takes place this weekend. In case you were wondering, the Mechanicrawl is a walking tour which explores some of the different mechanical marvels along San Francisco's North Shore (including my personal favorite, The Musee Mecanique.I know most San Francisco natives avoid the North Shore like a tourist-filled plague, but this is a great chance to see all of those things that you might not otherwise ever bother (or get) to see. And should you happen to be amongst the plague of tourists that swarm to the city this time of year, this would be a great opportunity to take a very unique (and free) walking tour.

Controlling the Speed on a 240VAC Industrial Fan: Suggestions please

I have acquired an old "Airspeed" Industrial air circulator or fan, which stands on a pedestal. It still works, but at only one, fairly fast speed and in one fixed position. As a project, I am stripping it down and restoring it, while altering the overall look to something more in tune with a Steampunk aesthetic. As part of this I am adding a brass worm-drive which will enable me to alter the angle of the fan plus motor assembly on the pole to which it's attached. I would also like to be able to adjust the speed, either continuously, or using set points ( slow, medium, fast etc.). The motor appears to be single phase and connects directly to mains 240V AC supply. There are no electronics at all in the current construction - I would guess that the unit dates to the 1950s or 60s? Can any one suggest a safe and reasonably simple way to set up a speed control system? All suggestions welcome, however banal - the more simply outlined the better. If you know of an electromechanical means of doing this, so much the better. Regards and thanks

fire sleeve?

Fire sleeve is a common term for a Silicone coated fiberglass sleeve, generally used in industrial or aerospace applications. Fiberglass acts as an insulator or barrier for constant temperatures up to 540ºC. Silicone is generally able to withstand temperatures up to about 260C degrees continuous. Silicone, however, has the added benefit of being able to withstand and repel much higher temperatures for short durations, including liquid molten metals. Fire sleeve is used as a protective sleeve on industrial hoses, hydraulic hoses, cables, wires, etc. Fire sleeve generally refers to two variations: An aerospace version is made with a braided fiberglass substrate and is commonly used in the aerospace industry. Its construction enables qualified hose assemblies to meet the SAE standards which have been established relative to the protection which this product provides. An industrial version, constructed of a knitted fiberglass substrate is also available. Because it is less expensive it is more commonly used in hot industrial applications where this type of protection is needed. The industrial version will not meet the SAE standards. Fiberglass sleeve—without the Silicone rubber coating—has a higher continuous temperature rating, up to 1000ºF or 540ºC and is available as a knitted or braided sleeve for protection of hoses and cables where molten splash protection or weld splatter protection is not required. Fire sleeve is used for industry, aerospace, automotive, mining.

Where can I get recycled industrial textile material?

I've been looking for this: http://www.markrobson.fr/page5/files/metisse1.jpg kind of industrial recycled felt(?) type material everywhere and I can't seem to find any source that isn't exclusively sold wholesale with insanely huge minimum bulk orders like 1,000 meters minimum or something. I really really like the look of the material and wanted to use it for home decor things like for furniture or even use as a rug and possibly clothes or something and I also of course like the fact that it's made of recycled materials. Which brings up another question does anyone happen to know if this stuff is safe for those kinds of applications or is it similar to fiberglass insulation which is actually pretty harmful to touch? I really want to use it for clothes or home decor if it isn't harmful but definitely don't have the money or even use for anything over 10 meters of this material and even that's a stretch I really am looking more like up to five meters or so at the moment.

I am in need of a rechargable battery operated industrial sewing machine motor. I would like to be able to switch from the battery to AC power when needed. Use battery when in the field and AC back at the shop. Typical sewing machine motor is: 2 poles, 130 cycles 50/60, 1.0 amps, 90 watts. It would be great if the battery would last 1.25-1.50 hours per charge and be removable to install a fresh battery and be charging the spent one. Thanks.

FAA Ruling ends FPV and will destroy RC Model Aircraft industry is USA

Hello, This is a serious matter. Please read and act. Deadline is July 25. Please see this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYs815t4knQ Then please go to this website and read  the document "Interpretation of the Special Rule for Model Aircraft". http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketDetail;D=FAA-2014-0396 To summarize, the FAA has deemed that a sweeping, blanket regulation is necessary to take care of an issue created by a few dumb individuals making bad decisions. Because a very, very small few people who never touched a RC model aircraft before buy a DJI Phantom and decide to fly it over crowded city streets crashing into buildings and and almost hurting people, the larger hobby community is now paying the penalty of those dumb people. Why it matters to me: I just got into the hobby and I am not flying FPV yet. Actually I cannot fly FPV until I get my FCC Ham License. I am following the rules. I do NOT fly over people, cars, streets, buildings. I do not fly over private property other than my own. I DO fly within line of site of my aircraft, under 400 ft, in open fields or isolated locations. I do keep my aircraft in good working order. I am an AMA member, have insurance in case of RC accidents, have my AMA number inscribed on my model. So I do everything within regulations. Most RC modelers and AMA members do. But we all pay the price because some bonehead goes to amazon and buys a ready built aircraft and on the first flight takes it to a crowded school playground and crashes it on someone's car. I want to grow into this hobby and advance to FPV. I do it legally, responsibly, and safely. I use this hobby to freely express myself in a safe, harmless way. this hobby is enjoyable, challenging and has forced me to be innovative. I actually invented something that I want to share in instructables one day. Why it should matter to you: The government is slowly eroding away our rights. This regulation criminalizes a hobby that has been enjoyed by generations. Done responsibly, the hobby is safe, enjoyable, promotes innovation and gives people a way to express themselves. It is also an industry that many people rely on to make a living. The FAA as a government agency, is overstepping their authority and threatening our freedom to conduct ourselves are citizens in a safe manner. under this ruling, a RC model operator does something innovative (it does not have to be FPV related) shares it on instructables, and wins a prize from one of the many GREAT contest in intructables... Guess what, that instructables member is NOW a CRIMINAL. You are not allowed to get any compensation for RC Model hobby. under this ruling, you cannot fly FPV in an isolated forest capturing wonderful video and posting that video on the internet as an expression of your creativity. That my friends is Freedom of Expression being undermined. That video is now incriminating evidence that you broke the law. Even though that video harms no one. Under this ruling, an individual who invents a new RC airplane, mass produces it and sells it to others is a criminal because RC models is only for amateur hobby. Any monetary gain is criminal. So it is criminal for someone to innovate and try to make a living from that innovation. Do not let the government overstep their authority over us citizens. I ask that you respectfully tell the FAA to consider reversing their ruling. Ask them to go not take the easy route of making a over-generalized, sweeping, blanket regulation that impacts everyone in the hobby, past, present and future. instead, have them create regulation that target the the unsafe operators who make poor choices. thank you.

The Bravery of Being Out of Range: A Technological Revolution

The 18th century gave us the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Purpose-built factories for the new industries such as iron and textiles. New and improved methods of transportation, communication and production. It changed the way people lived / worked and it created / inspired a lot of what we still see and use today. This revolution had its negatives too. Jobs were lost to the industrial machines that did it better and faster, the poor and the working classes often had to endure grim living and working conditions. The black gold mined from underground, fuelled our thirst for advancement. Now in the 21st century, we are in the midst of the Technological Revolution. Ubers, drone deliveries, driverless cars and trucks, AI, Google, Facebook, Amazon Alexa, unmanned military vehicles, war by remote control and the bravery of being out of range. The drones, AI, robots and automation may not only take away our jobs, but potentially the need to leave the house or to have any real-world face to face interactions. They could re-define our lives, for better or for worse. Are you fearful? Wary? Or do you embrace the changes going on all around us?

What material can be used as a binder that would slowly dissolve in sea water?

There is an on-going problem in the fishing industry concerning bait in the crab fishery. Bait is becoming almost as expensive as crab. At the same time, there are by products in the seafood industry that are just being wasted that would fulfill the required needs if it could be combined with a sea water soluble material that could be adjusted to dissolve within set periods of time such as 3, 5 or 7 days. Anyone have any ideas? No soap or any material that would disturb the natural balance of the environment would work.
