New computer freezing problem

So I just built myself a new computer with the following specs gigabyte motherboard model: GA-MA770T-UD3P (rev. 1.0) phenom 2 tri core processor 4gb ddr3 mushkin ram radeon 4670 tp link wireless card 2 LCD's hooked up to the 4670 Windows 7 64-bit/ XP 64-bit (not at the same time) +tons of cooling so nothing is over heating I installed windows 7 and it kept freezing up every once in a while and I tried just about everything to fix it. Updating bios, cleaning the registry, making sure all the drivers are up to date, all sorts of things. So I thought it was Windows 7 giving me the problem. I uninstall windows 7 and installed windows xp. I loaded up everything got the drivers up to date and after a couple of hours it froze up. Then I rebooted and bam another freeze 3 minutes into being on the computer. And again the next time 15 minutes into being on the computer. Now Im not sure if the freezing is happening on windows 7 for the same reason as on Windows xp and it is driving me crazy not being able to use my new computer Any ideas on what I can do to fix the problem? Thanks for any help. Got some more details. 1) I noticed when I move a window around I my cp usage spikes from 1% to close to 30%. Not sure if this is normal but with tri core 2.8ghz doesnt seem like this is good. 2) When I have 3+ windows open and I drag them over each other it leaves a trail or shadow of its edge so it looks like I am dragging many windows. Sometimes this shadow is just white. 3) Also when I try to install a game the computer will always freeze before it finishes and most of the time right at the beginning. 4) When I press the button to force it to go off and then turn it back on it often just comes up with a black screen and I have to repeat. it always turns on the second time. How can I tell if it is my hardware? Just did a video stress test and benchmark. Everything was normal. Ran "cpu stability test 6.0". Watched it for 20 minutes then I left the computer and came back to see it frozen in screen saver. Speedfan temps- Temp 1- 26c temp2- 25c HD0- 26C core- 15c It is pretty cold in my room. I also found something that makes it freeze every single time I have done it so far. When trying to install world of warcraft as soon as I click agree in the install setup it freezes. 6 out of 6 times. My power supply is 500w "stable power"

i found a metal rod inside a duracel battery, whats it made of?

After looking through (literally) some batteries that i had held onto in the hope that theyd contain carbon rods for elecrolysis. i discoverd now what the signs are that a battery contains a carbon rod, and how to tell if its a wet cell. now, i opened up a d size duracel wet cell, that contained a metal rod that looks identical to a blunt nail, and i was wondering, what is this made of? because , i kno theres a reason iron rodsa arent used inside these batterries, being because theyd rust, yet this has no rust at all, so im wondering wjhat is it? also, ide thought ide emntion it was attached to the negative terminal. also, is the silvery metalic flaky dust stuff inside the paper roll inside said battery pure zinc? or is it zinc oxide, because ide very much like to try to use it to make zinc sulfide for glow in the dark plastic, so would it work?

62 Projects to Make with a Dead Computer

For the past two years I have been engaged in the wild world of print publication. I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen... something something... that I thought would never end. And finally today I received the first copy of the book in the mail. After much hard work and anticipation, I present to you all 62 Projects to Make with a Dead Computer. This is the greatest book about computer repurposing that I ever wrote! I recommend that everyone should go out and buy a dozen copies for everyone they ever met. **Update** We celebrated Randy's amazing achievement this afternoon with pizza, apple juice, home made cookies and ice cream.  Randy's mother was nice enough to coordinate a surprise visit from "Dame Edna" who sang us a song and brought Randy a sweet dancing robot and some nice balloons. A good lunch was had by all.  Congratulations Randy! Photos appear below. Video coming soon! -noahw

A weird ringing sound from my computer?

Ever since I built my gaming computer, my HP monitor which has speakers in it makes a ringing sound. What is weird about it is that when my CPU is occupied for a second or two (Like opening Google Chrome), it stops and when it is done processing that it starts back up. It also stops when I lay my mouse over certain things or put a drop down list. It's a very high pitch sound that everyone I ask says they don't hear anything. However, I can hear it like one of those old chunky TVs that make a high pitch sound on start up. It's very distinct to me and it's annoying. I know it is my speakers making the sound because whenever I unplug them they stop making the sound. Any possibility? Motherboard malfunction? My speakers on plugged into the green port on the back of my computer. Thanks!

Building a good computer, able to play games?

So, I want to build a computer, and this would be my first computer. I don't know how to tell how parts are compatible with other parts, and which parts are good. I just want a computer that can surf the web, and support gaming with little to no lag, or freezing. To keep cost down, I don't exactly need to be able to play newer games that can over heat a six month old gaming computer in seconds. I want to keep this project under $400, or at $450 at most. Some games I would like to run is Halo 1 and 2, counter strike, and perhaps WoW. Any, and all help will be appreciated, Thank you.

What is this?

Sorry, I didn't know whether to post in bugs or feedback, so I went with bugs. So I have two computers, and one of them is a netbook. The netbook has a problem where sometimes the internet will just sit there and load for hours, but then when you refresh the page, it goes real fast. So today I posted a super long answer to a question, and clicked on post, and it didn't post. This is a problem with the compute, not with instructables. So I was all like "NOOOO!!!!" because my 3 paragraph answer just got deleted, and I went all crazy clicking back and forth from the top "Answer this" button to the bottom "Answer this" button. After awhile I gave up. Then I saw this thing at the bottom of one of the comment boxes that said "hey, this is my error!". Picture below. So, what is this?

I just don't feel happy and i feel empty inside one of my friends said it was not believing in myself but i don't think that's the case. It's not a confidence problem. (3 years in Tae Kwon Do fixed that). It seems like a personality problem. I don't feel like myself... i don't do much but keep to myself. I play online games with a headset and i can talk just how i want to unless i am at school. I just feel numb inside. It is really hard to explain and i feel like i look like the kid that just sits and goes through the motions and doesn't have any fun. It feels like i have the personality of a rock. Im not the best looking, not the funniest, but i am nice to everybody. ( for the most part). I am just not getting noticed as much as i want. when somebody talks to me i just kind of respond in as few words as possible and it doesn't feel natural to talk for a long time. Can anybody tell me what this problem is and how to fix it. How do I measure pressure inside computer case

. I've setup a home file server and would like to be able to maintain positive pressure in the case to keep dirt out (two dogs in the house). I've cut some filters to fit the fans blowing into the case (front, rear, and side) and installed a "PCI slot" exhaust fan (it and the PSU are the only exhausts). All these are connected to a four-channel controller.. Using the handy-dandy strip-of-paper-in-front-of-a-case-opening method, case pressure is real close to being equal to ambient with all intake fans on high and the exhaust fan on low (700W PSU has two fans that seem to work very well). Even under full-load, BIOS/SpeedFan says the 1.8 GHz Celeron temp stays below 140 degF under full load and idles in the mid-to-high 90s. HDD temps (2x400GB RAID 1 + spare and 40GB boot) stay below 105, except when formatting when they might rise to 110. . I have some clear tubing, so I could rig up a manometer, but don't feel comfortable hooking up a water hose to my computer. Any ideas on a cheap-and-easy way to measure DeltaP (I'm guessing 0-5 inWC would work) without liquids? Could a automotive Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor (I think they have a range close to 0-30 inWC) be adapted?. Someone point me in the right direction and I'll post an Instructable when I figure it out.

Could an O2 sensor from an automobile be used inside the combustion chamber of a potato gun?

So I was shooting my potato gun after talking about car repair today, when I got the idea. Could an O2 sensor from an automobile be used inside the combustion chamber of a potato gun to achieve optimal fuel/air ratio? Finding the chemistry of the aerosol fuel would be difficult, and I wouldn't know where to start with the computer stuff, but could it be done? If so, has anyone done it? I searched instructables and no one has even mentioned it. I found on a mazda forum that a wideband O2 sensor may detect the air/fuel ration when using propane, but what about aerosol? Propane in a plastic gun is just begging for injury. I use Right Guard sport deodorant (Without antiperspirant) as the fuel, I think it works the best. The primary ingredient is Denatured Alcohol.

Is it possible to adapt a domestic Aircon unit to feed five dog kennels,

I have been asked to supply cool air to five kennels, adobe built, in a row.  I am proposing to Build a funnel box around the inside unit to feed air through pipping (drainage/plumbing) to the individual units. The engineer/salesman has told me it is immpossible to do this and a much larger/expensive system will be required.  Would any one care to comment on this ? I was planning to fit a small fan at the far end of the tubing to aid in the flow of air and take back pressure off the unit.  As with most of the instructables I have seen here, I know this is not the "correct" way of doing the job, more of a hack but at the moment I have more time than money

Some questions about A/V stuff (home theater)

Hi all! Hope I got the right place for this.  I figured that there's someone in this community who can help me. My A/V receiver is about to give up the ghost.  A number of channels no longer work, and the sound is pretty fuzzy.  I know I need to replace it. I've always been terrible with A/V stuff.  I'm not sure what direction to go as far as replacing it goes.  Here's my issue:  The room I have the receiver in is small, so I don't need a lot of oomph.  I also don't have a way to run wires to rear speakers without people tripping over them.  I've gone without rear sound for a long time now.  I've never seen a set of wireless speakers that are reliable, so that seems like a poor option. I can't really do a "home theater in a box" setup, because they don't have enough inputs to add all of my stuff.  The things that currently run through the receiver are my computer (which runs our TV through a tuner card), a wii, an xbox 360, and a dvd player.  None of them are HDMI.  I use RCA cables for everything. The other thing that looked interesting is a sound bar, as they can apparently replicate surround sound without the rear speakers, but they seem to have the same problem that the "theater in a box" packages have. I don't know anything about receivers.  For example, I don't know if it makes sense to use a 5.1 receiver if I'm only running R, L, and Center speakers from it. Anyway... I'm not looking for brands or models necessarily, but rather, setup suggestions.  What kinds of things should I be looking into?  I can't be the only person with this kind of problem. Any advice that some of you A/V gurus can offer would be greatly appreciated!  The cheaper the better, here... as I don't use it all that much.  :) Thanks!

Wireless button to talk to computer

Hello, I'm running some sessions with a multi-abled theatre group of kids and we want to create a piece of interactive dance. Each kids will carry a couple of buttons and when they press them they send a signal wirelessly to a computer nearby which is running the dance program connected to a projector so the kids can see what they are doing. So pressing their button could change the colour of the kids projection from red to blue.  I think I need to use a microcontroller inside a button but am not sure which one - cheap and small - bluetooth or wifi? How do I get the button press program onto the microcontroller? Finally how does the computer hear the signal? The dance program is written in Processing.  Is there a project that is similar? I've searched for lots of things but can't find exactly what I need. Thanks The kids will enjoy this Tim

Dell computer question?- not turning on

I have a Dell dimension 2400 that while using it turned off and never powered back on. It was raining that day and I was on the computer and I heard what it sounded like a spark and I kinda saw it too behind where the computer case is(light was off so I saw like a small spark on the wall). I have the computer on a protected surge power strip. This happend before a month before and it was fixed with a new power supply. It didn't turn on also the next morning and it was raining also in the night. I'm thinking a voltage spike cause it .So this time I put in a new power supply and it wont turn on. The power supplys both work(new and older one). So what could it be that is causing it not to turn on? Anyone ever had this problem before? There is a green LED inside that turns on when pluged in but thats it. The power buttons LEDs don't turn on when pushed to power on.

Request: An Internal UPS or battery for a PC

My town has been experiencing power dips and short outages. i bought a cheap ups but it doesn't really do the job (the PC still cuts out) but i noticed that my laptop carries on just fine (obviously because it has an internal battery) so that got me wondering. Inside the pc it's just 12v and 5v isn't it? surely you could set up a battery inside the case that works just like the one in a laptop. anyone fancy giving it a go?
