I have a few questions regarding a scultpure I am making- To keep it simple, let's say the sculpture is simply a rectangle, ~4'x8'. What I would like to do is set up eight motion sensors (one in each corner and one in the middle of each side) that when triggered activate a corresponding tape player with a tape loop inside to play on a central speaker unit. So the goal is simplest terms is for people to walk around the installation triggering a musical note and with enough people organize a composition or a chord. Each motion sensor would have its own respective tape player, but I don't have the funds to supply eight seperate speakers. I also don't have much money to spend on PIRs, however, ebay has a bunch of PIR home security sensors for around $5. This project is most likely going to be crude, so I'm not overly worried about how sloppy it may turn out. What I imagine is to have the tape players always on, always running their loops, and a way for their respective sensors to allow the sound to play through the speaker. The gaps I need filled- 1) Is it sensible to use the PIR sensors I'm finding on ebay? (Aleph XP-40, Ademco 998) 2)short of buying eight speakers, is there a way to hook up all eight tape players to a central speaker unit? 3) If I am making this overly complicated, might you know of a better way to accomplish the task?

I'm installing a new soaker-style bathtub as part of a bathroom renovation. It is acrylic, and is designed to fit into a cutout. That is, there is a tiled space between the lip of the tub and the tiled walls around the tub. I bought the tub on sale as a demo model from a home store (Rona, kinda like Home Depot), and as such it came with no installation instructions. I couldn't find them online, and I wasn't able to get any help from the manufacturer, either. Perhaps I need to pester them more. Anyway, the issue is this. On many similar tub installs, I've seen them layer up mortar under the tub for support. However, my tub has two wooden rails (2x3s) permanently fiberglassed to the bottom. In addition, a very dense hardboard spans the entire bottom of the tub. It really seems as if the tub is designed to be set on the floor just like that, perhaps with wood blocks screwed in around the edges of the rails to keep the tub from shifting. I can do that if that's how it should be done. I just don't want to risk cracking the tub with hundreds of pounds of water and human - my wife would not be pleased, nor would I. Does anyone have experience with this sort of thing?

Would appreciate some advice on this project. I'm putting together a proposal for a series of outdoor sound installations in a nature park. a couple of the installations will be places where you can plug in headphones to listen to certain sounds captured live from a microphone in an interesting place- for example a hydrophone in a pond. The plan is that the mic will be hooked up to 3.5 jack sockets and listerners will be able to plug in their own headphones. Now obviously there needs to be some amplification because the mic signal level will be far too quiet to hear on headphones. I need a power amp that will be powered through a solar panel. My question is, shall I just use a headphone amp, like the Behringer ha400 or make my own power amp circuit? I need to be able to make everything sturdy and fit into a weather proof junction box to protect it from the elements. I have done some experiments with an LM386 power amp module but there was so much background noise and it didn't pick up the mic level at all (may have been a problem with the mic I was using,it was a crappy little lapel mic.- I did get a signal from a piezo disc but it was again really crackly and noisy.) If it is best to build a circuit with a power amp module, could people make suggestions of ones that will sound good and clean, and work with stereo headphones. Thanks a lot Ash

I had the idea to put a sub in my car. i bought everything (sub+amp). But first I tried to wired it in my car, my friend told me to look at my alternator to see if he could take the load. My amp and subs are 600W rms. So I,ve look at the specification of my car....my alternator is an 80 amp. Its the only thing about alternator I saw in a lot of diffent specs.\ So. 80 amp alternator 600W rms amp 600W rms sub Could my alternator could take the load???? thanks!

Ok so I see a few solar setups online. now I have been researching for a while on this and no one can give me the answers so here i go on here. So i want an UPGRADE-ABLE solar setup. right now I have 2 150ah 12v batteries. I have multiple 50 amp charge controllers. so when I buy the solar panels I can plug in and get batteries going no problem.... My issue is the mains voltage side of things. I want to have something like a fuse box, this will have my main breaker and then the independent safety switches. the issue is to do this I need to make sure all my power is on 1 line. so if I buy a few small inverters I will not be able to piggyback them as they tend to go bang. so what type of inverter can I get that will be able to go in parrallel to allow me to get more amps if needed? I am hoping there is one that is infinitely upgradeable just in case. TLDR what type of off-grid inverter allows parrallel connection to other inverters??

So I have recently purchased an 8 inch subwoofer from a garage sale, wich was already mounted in the box. It has 2 inputs, a red and a black. I currently have it hooked up in replacement of the stock passenger side rear speaker in my 1999 ford ranger XLT, and it works well, but is not very loud. My question is 2-fold. 1: how would I go about wireing the speaker so that it could be used in addition to both the stock rear speakers without decreasing sound quality or volume, and 2: How could I increase the volume of just the subwoofer without affecting the other speakers? I have heard that there are "bass amplifiers" that i could hook in line but have not seen where I could purchase/ build one. Schematics and links would be very helpfull! Thanks, Iloveairsoftstuff

I have a metal outdoor gazebo and am tired of the flimsy hanging screens supplied for it. How do I install permanent screening around it? Can I attach screening to the metal frame? How? I will continue to use the removeable canvas top. Installing doors is not an issue as I will leave "floating" mesh panels at each end for that.

I have an OEM DVD RSE (Rear Seat Entertainment) console. It is for a 2006 Chevy Malibu Maxx LTZ. The console I have in my car is without the DVD component. I see 4 holes to bolt it into the center. As I will have to remove the one in my car and replace it with the new GM part, will I have to take the seats out? Anything special I should do first?

Hello, I want to set up surveillance camera system in my house. The house is already prewired with 2 cables (1 CAT5 & 1 Coax RG6) at each end (1 end at camera place and the other end at main box). I also have a Power Suply box with out put of 12.3V DC and 5Amps. I want to use Coax RG6 for Video transmission and CAT5 for Power transmission. The distance to run cable from a surveillance camera to a main box is about 40feet - 50feet long. I'm trying to use a CAT5 cable for 12V DC to run for my surveillance camera (12V DC 500mA), I use 2 pairs for positive (4 wires) & other 2 pairs (4 wires) for negative. I wonder if I do this way, will it have any hazard at all? Please advise! Any advice/help is appreciate! Best regards, DP

I have a new hard drive for my laptop and need to install win 7 on it, as was previously installed on the old one. Being an OEM machine, it did not come with an installation disk so I either have to try and extract it from the old hard drive, or get a pirated copy. Is it possible to simply mirror the drive onto the new one, or will it require a DVD installation? I have the facilities to copy the drive while it is still in the laptop. Can the activation key from the genuine pre-installed windows be used with a pirated copy to make it work without any of the "windows genuine notifications"

I've been looking at these awesome bubble columns that are so wretchedly expensive and dying to get one for my office. Note, I am sure they are worth every penny, but I have few pennies. For the link-phobic, a bubble column is a clear tube several feet tall with an aerator making bubbles and multi-coloured lights from beneath the column. Some columns are interactive and others have plastic fishies or balls that sail around inside. There is also a space-saving "bubble wall" that only runs 1L of water. Anyone even have a clue as to where to start? No pics, sorry, I didn't want to pull them off the website.

Looking for people who are interested in helping out on the electrical engineering side and/or set design of a installation game. Various people in the industry (theme parks and video games) should stop by during the exhibition and credit will be provided. On the electrical side it would be helping out with networking of Arduino boards to run each "gag" and be linked into a show control. On the set design side - help with the set design of the piece, lighting, and construction. The installation will take 3 players and have them "break into" a vault with various high tech security (lasers, pressure sensors, computers needing to be hacked, etc). Other examples of this type of work would be "The Tomb" and "Operation Spy" by 5wits, La Fuga by Negone (in Spain), interactive haunted houses, and theme park attractions. Message me if you have any questions. Thanks!

Hey everyone.... The Savvy Tech... (Mike) here, I am a professional assembly technician and have been for about 30 years. Don't know what I am talking about... you have seen the stuff on displayed at the store that looks great but when the asking about taking one home, people find out it comes in a box and requires assembly. Sometimes the assembly is easy... many times, not! If you like building things we should talk. I am the founder of the United Assemblers Network and recruiter for UX Assembly. Check out this recruiting video on the UAN website. Thanks, MikeM

I'm sure this is going to be spammed with people asking what's "debian" or "linux". Mostly because of some of the other answers I've seen to questions like this... Anyway, I was installing Debian Etch onto another comp of mine. Though when it got to installing the base system files ti gave me an error window saying, "Debootstrap Error: Release file signed by unknown key (key id 9AA38DCD55BE302B)" I tried google to see what came up but ended up with only 7 results that weren't what I was looking for...Is there a way to get around this key? Maybe going into the console and deleting the archive.gpg file? Thanks, RX

Hello there, I have an access hatch already cut into my ceiling. I am now wondering whether to get a ladder and install it myself or to hire somebody. The access panel is over the steps to the basement. Here are the parameters involved: hatch: 28in x 30 in height to 1 st stair down: 8ft2in Yes, the hatch is small but there are ladders that fit it. Here's one, for example: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Werner-7-ft-9-ft-18-in-x-24-in-Compact-Aluminum-Attic-Ladder-with-250-lb-Maximum-Load-Capacity-AA1510B/203009104 So my question is, should I install it myself or is this not the sort of project one person can do comfortably, and it is best to just hire a couple carpenters to do that? Thanks. Boris.

So I'm trying to make a music box. I bought a 15 note hand crank mechanism I want to install into an 8 inch nautilus shell. I also want to etch the outside of the shell like in the photo. I've never worked with shells like this before and I obviously don't want to shatter it. What tools would I need to do this? What should I be careful of? Anyone with experience working with shells advice would be appreciated. :)
