Even when I stay away from Instructables alltogether, some people find it compulsive to insult my wife in my Instructables. I'm seriously considering removing all of my instuctables.

You know how something just occurs to you?In various places around the internet, I find people who choose to have a "difference in opinion" with me.I like to think I am quite well-educated, and with a decent vocabulary, so it is usually the other party that descends to out-right name-calling first. That doesn't bother me. In fact, sometimes it entertains me, as some of the insults can be quite surreal. My current favourite is from a poster on the BBC. He turned out to be, er, rather right wing, and eventually ended up declaring that I probably want to go and live in the Marxist Hell that is Sweden.I had to check - Sweden is actually a slightly right-of-centre, healthy, wealthy monarchy, with no particularly horrific crime rate.It turned out that the poster had found out that Sweden is about 85% non-religious or atheist (and climbing), and also has a fairly healthy immigrant population. The poster put this together with the ranting of a Norwegian blogger based in Belgium (?), and decided that Sweden is doomed until it rids itself of all the Muslim immigrant criminals. The poster was a complete loon, but I loved the insult.Anyhoo, to the rambling point; what insults have you been on the receiving end of that have been unintentionally entertaining?

I don't have an adapter for it but I want to wire an adapter to the power cord of the camera. The ratings for the camera are 12VDC and 80 mA max. What adapter would I need? How would I wire the power cord to a batery pack? The camera's power cord has a red wire, a white wire, and copper wire around the insulted ones.

...all the original and temporary ideas for this rental!Other than the somewhat insecure people who felt the need to use this forum to insult me, all others were fantastic with their ideas (which, as I believed, is the purpose of this site!)? I'm going to get some hanging plants that I can take with me when I eventually leave...and I'll look at a used furniture store for some ideas for original screens and such. Thanks y'all!

Here are the only rules of this group. 1. Forums are not moderated, post whatever you feel like. 2. instructables are: must be somthing that shoots out of, and or, shoots somthing out of a barrel, (i have made a few exceptions here and there, just have a good reason (pm me) 3. invite others! 4. have fun and be kind!:(i will not tolerate any insults, if you have a problem then kindly and curtiously discuss it with the objector) 5. Thats it! post intructables!

My friend and I were debating : If somebody sitting in the back of a plane cockpit going faster than the speed of sound ( the whole plane that is, imagine it was the SR71 ) insults the pilot at the front will the pilot hear it and turn around to punch the guy sitting in the back? This one might be more understandable: Can someone sitting in the front of a super sonic plane hear the guy in the back, without the help of microphone and all that crap. My friend thinks it is impossible becose the plane is going faster than the speed of sound and the sound from the guy at the back will not go fast enough for it to catch up. I think that is total nonsense Anybody knows the answer ????

First off... This isnt made to insult teachers, I just needed a title to beckon people to my question. The problem I have is that the teacher at my school have a new spiffy, Anti-Slacking Device, called LAN Schools. The teacher can monitor all computers in the classroom. It also has the ability to cut off internet access to a computer. So I can no longer play my beloved flash games. Long story short. Is there any way I can play flash games on my computer through a flash drive without using internet explorer or firefox?

I am looking for ideas here from all you "experts" (where an expert is described as - Ex (a has been) spurt 9 a drip under pressure)) Nothing like insulting the unpaid help! before they start :-) happy New year everyone. OK A friend has a model of a fair ground ride, this is a steam yacht, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp76RTbqqLk he wants to animate this and would like the motion to be realistic at the scale size. He had tried a number of mechanical solutions, cranks etc but they all give a jerky motion and the real thing is very smooth. Any suggestions. I am inclined to think this is a micro processor solution with either a suitable servo motor or similar driven to mimic the inertia of the real thing. ideas folks?

As a faithful Linux user, I know that I am obligated to disparage and insult Apple every time I receive the opportunity to do so. What I want to know is why this is so. I understand the fact that their computers are built really tight and that they (like Microsoft) cater to a market of users that I'm supposed to feel superior to because I can take my computer apart and put it back together. I generally get a bad, anti-modding vibe from their devices as well. However, I really have no idea why Apple is so disliked amongst the open-source community. If anyone could explain what all of this is about (specifically Apple's use of Unix), I would much appreciate it.

Is there a reason Instructables is deleting comments and replies without a note or considering to grow a backbon so we get answers? You recent site upgrade has offended and disappointed long standing users, now you add insult to it by deleting their comments.I call this censorship and it should not happen. In the deleted posting was nothing offensive, nothing wrong - the only thing in there highlighted the utter disappointment of the user. What comes next next? Deleting accounts of users who prefer to have an opinion that differs from the official Instructables.com viewpoint? What are you so scared of?If you do major changes you have to consider that not everyone likes them.As it looks now you have a hand full of users liking the kids look and features while the rest of the community is disappointed to say it nice.Deleting their comments in this regard won't fix the problem, it only adds to it.

Well, The other night I set out to make two trays of treats for my work collegues on Christmas Eve... I then had a GREAT idea to turn them into I'bles The peppermint Snowmen went great without any major unfixable hiccups... My candy Cane Fudge however *sigh* *face palm* I deceided to make my Christmas treats into I'bles and Entries into the Christmas Gifts contest...So as I 'baked' I snapped away on my camera. Everything was going well until I was knocked by my dogs whilst adding the food colouring, so that it looked like a rainbow had vomited into my mix... then to add insult to injury, I dropped the cooling mixture on the way to the refridgerator.... Luckily I cought my camera... but the fudge was... well.. beyond repair. What I wan't to know, is if you have ever had a disasterous I'ble attempt, and have you posted it? -Biggsy Cheerio

I am very disappointed. I just spent 20 minutes typing up a perfectly good rant about how I was going to quit Instructables because my hastily put together towel-and-paracord project didn't make the contest finals. It was a very good rant, complete with accusations of favoritism and contest rigging, slams at the other projects that did make the finals, thinly veiled insults at the judges and Instructables staff, and other fun stuff. All tongue-in-cheek, of course. It was intended as a preemptive strike directed toward those who will inevitably whine about the contest results in earnest, in the hopes that a little satirical hyperbole would illustrate the ridiculousness of such whining. It bothers me to see intelligent, rational people turn into five-year-olds when they don't get their way, and I was hoping to forestall some of that with a bit of humor. All for naught, unfortunately. When I went to post it, it went into the Great Bit Bucket in the Sky. I can only assume that Robot Was Not Amused. Now I shall go and compose a rant about how I'm quitting Instructables because my posts are being unfairly censored. ;-p

Hi everyone. Long time visitor of Instructables, made a few items I've seen and my most recent project was adding a star power pedal to my guitar hero controller. I bought a audio extension cable with a male and female jack, 1/8th size. I cut the cable about six inches from the female end. I stripped about an inch, inside was a bundle of copper wire wrapped around a clear insulted wire. I twisted the exposed copper wire and tinned it, I stripped the clear housing and twisted it, tinning them as well. I tinned the exposed wire to the GND, and the clear to Select. Positioned the jack and everything went well. I took the male cable, connected it to momentary switch and connected the male cable to the female jack. Turned on the system and controller. Got star power and hit the switch with no response. I'm very confident in my soldering and know I did it correctly, so I was wondering: 1) Are these kind of cables capable of doing what I intend? 2) Maybe the GND or the Select button are shorted out on the board of the controller? Thanks for any help everyone!

[warning: contains some rant-like content]I am so angry that I can't see straight. My apartment building has a Community Garden, which is good. Our rules and guidelines which are especially emphatic about keeping the gardens all natural and organic, and chemical and pesticide-free. To this end, there is an "Approved Garden Products" list specifying the chemicals and fertilizers that may be used in the gardens. The list includes "Walt's" brand organic fertilizer, "Cedar Grove" compost, and six product made by Miracle-Gro.I had two 4' x 5' plots in the Community Gardens last year, which I heavily amended with the compost from my worm bins. I submitted a request to have an organic fertilizer mix that I have on hand added to the approved list, but the only response I received was another employee telling me: "I emailed Jane (not her real name) about it, and she emailed back to tell to you that Walt's is the best one to use." I should have followed up on this, but was too angry and aghast to speak to Jane about it immediately, and later never did get around to grasping that particular nettle. This year I'm doing just one 4' x 5' plot. I dug in some compost on Sunday, and on Tuesday I received the following letter (all names have been changed for internet purposes):Dear Ms. Gorfram,I wanted to follow up with you regarding an email I received about "homemade" compost that you may be using in your garden. The garden agreement has specific items that can be used in the garden, unless you are using a combination of those ingredients, your "homemade" compost hasn't been approved yet. If you would like to submit the ingredients of your compost for review we can take a look at it and try to get it on the list as well. In the mean time please use only the Cedar Grove compost or any other product on the approved list.We appreciate you help in this matter.Sincerely,Jane Doe,Property Manager(Spelling and punctuation very much hers, very much verbatim)She insulted my compost. She accused me of violating the gardening agreement. She is demanding that I list every last darned thing that I ever put into my compost and submit it to her for approval. She appears to be confusing my compost with the fertilizer that I asked to have added to the approved list. She either does not necessarily believe that I do make my own compost, or she is misusing quotation marks to indicate emphasis. ...She insulted my compost! Not wanting to alienate the manager of my apartment building by telling her that she is a slavering ignoramus who does not know the difference between compost and fertilizer, I responded with the following:In re: your letter of June 9, 2009Dear Ms. Doe,Perhaps there is some misunderstanding about my use of soil amendments in my Community Garden plot. The compost that I use in my garden plot contains no chemicals or pesticides. It is made entirely from vegetable waste from my kitchen and garden, to which I add water and locally native earthworms. It is my understanding that this sort of bulk organic matter does not need to be reviewed for the Approved Garden Products list. In answer to a related question asked at the July 15, 2008, Community Gardener's Meeting, John Galt (n.b. Jane Doe's boss) said, "As long as it doesn't contain pesticides or chemicals, you don't need to tell us about it."The email your letter refers to may have been in regard to my August, 2008 request to have "Dr. Earth Organic 7" fertilizer added to the Approved Gardening Products list. For your convenience, I have attached a new copy of the information about "Dr. Earth Organic 7" and its ingredients that I submitted with my request. I look forward to receiving approval of "Dr. Earth Organic 7" for use in the Community Gardens, or a statement of your reasons for denying this request, soon.Thank you,Evelyn Q. GorframAm I nuts? Should I be this mad? Should I tell her to take her 20 square feet of soil and suggest where she might put them? Should I demand that we duel at dawn unless she publicly retracts her dread insults to my compost?

Hi Folks. I have a bit of a dilemma I hope one of you good people can help me with. Nostalgic Girl asked me to get her old electric bike back on the road for her & all is going well apart from one small problem. Someone had a go at it a couple of years ago & managed to unplug most of the wiring in the headlamp where all the clever stuff is controlled like the horn lights & most importantly the speed. Normally this wouldn't be a problem as in a sensible world if you have six things to plug in you would use six plugs & sockets to wire it up, unfortunately on this there are six plugs but they have only used two different plug & socket sets one two pin type & one three pin type. Just to add insult to injury there are two three pin with Red, Green, Black and one with Red, Green, Yellow & the Two pin ones have two Black, Red one for the horn & another for the front light & another Blue, Brown which I believe is for the brake light. I would try a bit of trial & error work but I am just a little bit worried that the error bit may end up in my having to buy a new board. Can anyone tell me where I can get a wiring diagram from? Or know which plug goes where on the board? Thanks in advance for your help you clever people. Kev.

So yeah, a couple of weeks ago I invited my upperclassmen 'The_Teacher_Dead_LOL' to chat with me, DJ, littlehef37 and n8 on the I'bles chatroom. It was pretty fun, so I asked him to join I'bles just for the heck of it, and he did. His acc is 'The Teacher Is Dead HaHa', and his main point of interests are cooking and photography, so if he might get his lazy butt up his couch and start working hard, you might be able to expect a few cooking and photography I'bles from him. He's a really nice guy, and he doesn't like K'nex (he (jokingly) insulted DJ in the chatroom for playing with 'toy guns' (ROFL) ), so you K'nexers better not be spamming him :-P He's around one and a half year older than me BTW, I'll be 14 on September and he just turned 15 on February. He will be (I think) online around the same time as me, 'cuz all the kids in my school are basically online around the time I'm on, so, yeah.... Oh, and another thing, he's not so good at speaking English. He's a D student in English, but he's open to a lot of constructive criticisms on his English. He does use capital letters, commas, full stops etc. properly though, and he doesn't spell badly because he actually wants to, so that's a plus, I guess... Well, I guess that's it. Moga2 lo bisa sukses di nih website cuy, best of luck dari gw lah! :-P

Alright sorry I know DGM already made a thread for me but I'm going to make my own so that I may update it with the most recent additions. We're are still very much alive and not closing down after all.http://knexables.uuuq.com/forum/index.phpAlright so I made a site called K'nexables (uncreative I know I just wanted a quick name) because I didn't like everyone clinging to 'ibles. I know that the insults have gone down but we'll never be highly respected in the community. And it would still be nice to have a place of our own. However, KI isn't a favorite for some of you. I can't blame you but I know there are those of you who like it so I'm not targeting you. I'm not trying to compete with KI I'm simply giving those who don't like it the option to join me. You may be wondering- What does TheDunkis's site have that would make me want to use that instead? Well here are some current features and some soon to come.-Chat with different categories based on the forum. If you're a member of the forum you're a member of the chat.-Wide selection of categories including non K'nex topics.-Good amount of BBcodes to make posting easier.-VIP forum. Equivalent of the Secret forum on KI but there are many more ways to get into it.-Constant Contest. We may have more than one running at a time (although all ending at different times so that you may participate in all of them even if low on pieces). Sorry our prizes aren't physical but you can still earn a variety of forum prizes.-Friendly atmosphere. We'll attempt to be a little more friendly than KI. Not saying that KI isn't but they can be intimidating to new members. I'll have some firm but strict rules with a fair and just punishment system.-Not that most of you even care but me and couple others are planning on prioritizing KA as our main posting site. All of my future projects will be posted here and you'll have to join in order to see them. I'll post them here too though just not for like a month after posted on KA.Alright I think that's all of them so far. Here's a list of the things I'm planning on adding.-Ranks with K'nex pieces for images-Karma or forum rep-Possibly a cash mod for an online forum economy (trust me it'll be used in a variety of ways)-Possibly a portal mod. A sort of front page that has many useful tools.-Anything you want! We'll pretty much add anything that seems helpful and easy if you suggest it. We'll pretty always add a new category if you suggest it as long as it makes sense.Any questions?

When you forget your homework, it's nice to add some humor to the situation and make the teacher laugh (hopefully). Here are some excuses I came up with: "It fell into the Twilight Zone!" "My Chicken was in my room while I was doing it, and his diaper fell off. I figured you didn't want it in the classroom, so I saved everyone the drama and chucked it in the chicken coup for them to enjoy. Your welcome, by the way." "Well, just as I was finishing, I heard a 'er-er-reh-ah', and my paper turned into o paper figure. Then there was a 'er-er-er-ee', and it transformed into a paper airplane and flew out the window! The last thing I saw was a Decepticon insignia on the back. I'd watch out. It's a new era of Decepticons!" "My cat ate it, horked it up, and told me to clean it up. I've got it in a plastic baggy, if you still want it." "Four penguins came into my room, took it, and told me they needed it for a top secret mission. The leader told me 'You didn't see anything!'. I assure you, it's being put to good use." "I was doing this outside, when this little green block-thing came up, looked at me, screamed, then blew up. It's all ash now, so it's useless, so, I drew a picture of a creeper instead!" "Homework doesn't exist in my dimension." "Megatron stole it! I'm telling you, I wasn't going to NOT give it to him! He had a blaster in my face and everything! I spent the rest of the night trying to figure out what happened, so I absolutely had NO time left for re-doing it." "I lost it in a mine. If you want to find it, the world name is 'Procrastination'." "The neighborhood dog chased me, took the homework in his jaws, and told me 'This ain't over!' I cannot tell you why he said that, because that is my bussiness." "I ate it. It was bland until I added barbeque sauce." "Harry Potter turned it into a toad! I yelled at him to turn it back, but he turned it into $1 million, and I am NOT giving it to you now!" "The TV hypnotized me into thinking it was a rabid squirrel, so I ended up smacking it into oblivion." "Function error; please define 'homework', or reboot." Please check out TheOneAndOnlyMissingNo.'s instructable on fake Windows XP error messages: https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Make-a-Windows-XP-Error-Message/ Its a lot of fun to make, and printing them and giving them to your teacher would be funny as well. NOTE: Realizing now that it might insult the teacher (Thanks, Kiteman), if you DO use one of these, just come clean at the end, smile, and Say "Yes, I forgot to do it. It won't happen again."

EDIT: This has turned out to be a really long post. Please see the top comment if you don't want to read everything, or if you aren't a scanner (seriously...). I did my best to stop my longforumtopicisitis disease... I don't really know how to write this "topic". I know I'm not the only one that's a bit upset about it. I'll do my best to keep it short, but if you might get pretty confused if you don't read (almost) everything. I would really like to hear your 100% HONEST opinion. I am looking for criticism. Don't worry if your response sounds harsh. Thank you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Instructables member OAE has posted several forum topics about contest winners in the past months. I understand the fact that he is annoyed some Instructables that win in contests aren't original, aren't documented very well, and lack pictures. It does bug me a bit when these types of Instructables win, but I guess that there's normally a reason for that, since most contests don't lack entries... He also mentioned the fact that he was pretty annoyed about the fact that he doesn't win. I DO NOT want to insult him in any way, but even though his Instructables are fairly well documented, I wouldn't expect for one of his Instructables to be a finalist. Brooklyntonia wrote that "A paper airplane on a cutting mat doesn't scream click and vote.", and I agree. However, I seem to have the same (I think) problem with my Instructables, and I think that it has just gotten a bit too much. I've won in 3 contest with 86 I'bles (think of that as 50, if you know what I mean...), which is why I feel a bit weird for "complaining". It's not that I publish Instructables just for winning in contests. Far from that. SOOOOOOOO MANY times in the past year, I have posted an Instructable that I was absolutely positive that would win in a contest, but it wasn't even a runner up! I have SO MANY! It would take me an hour to post half of them, but here are some: Articulating 70W Spectrum-Balanced LED Panel for the Lamps & Lighting Contest How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise for the Wood Contest The Flat-Pack Bandsaw for the Flat-Pack Contest (less than the others, though...) How to Build a Wooden Drill-Press Vise for the Hand-tools Only Contest 9 Unusual Tool Storage Methods for Your Workshop for the Living without Closets Contest Make Your Own Plywood Mallet! for the Plywood Contest World's Most Over-Engineered 14-in-1 Soldering Station! for the Leftovers Contest Please correct me if I'm wrong: These Instructable are featured, well documented, meet the contests requirements, contain well lit high quality photos, are original (90%, of course...). I "politely encourage" people to vote only in an Instructable that I think will win... I would understand not winning at all once or twice, but not even being a runner up even once? WHAT am I doing SO HORRIBLY WRONG? What discourages me even more is that even though I want to build something that I really need, I will wait for months until a contest opens, start making, spend a ton of time on the Instructable, and then I realise that I waited for so long, and my I'ble hasn't even won! Benne, however, even though we both publish somehow similar content, has mastered this somehow! If I make something, I have to type up the Instructable immediately, because my short term memory is pretty bad. I wrote about this a bit here. If I calm the excitement down, I might be able not to publish it right away, but that will just discourage me, since I will feel that I haven't accomplished anything (aka positive feedback, etc...). Then after waiting several months, I will publish the I'ble and still not win? Imagine your boss, at work, saying "Okay (your name), you've spent 10 hours working, but I'm going to pay you only next year. Oh, nevermind, we're having budget cuts. I'm not going to pay you at all" Wait, WHAT? WHY? I'm making this sound as if it's a bet, which is okay since you don't get "paid" from Instructables, but never getting anything at all is annoying. Also, publishing Instructables is not extremely addicting (A REAL one... ;) I think I am following the contest guidelines, but not winning again, and again... Why? Is there something that I don't know? Thank you for reading!

The recent upgrades to this website caused some confusion as well frustration for those who though long requested features would be included. It seems that neither our code monkeys, nor those suggestiong changes and improvements are aware of the many requests and suggestions we made over the years. So let's help them out by posting what we think is bad, needs improvement or simply what we need to properly make use of this great website.Maybe within the next 3 to 10 years some might get implemented ;)I go first, shall I?1. DesignThe recent changes seemed to be solely target on people with little skills and using tablets / mobile phones. As common practise in standard forums all over the web the user should have the option to change a different layout based on the device he uses.Preferably with an automatic detection that can be overruled in the settings on the YOU pages.Someone on a small tablet will certainly welcome huge fonts and massive buttons.Maybe even the many "hidden" functions that only appear when scrolling or doing other weird things. But if you are like me and use a proper PC on a 4K screen this layout is not really usable at all.Nothing fits, nothing can be made to fit - all is fixed and pre-defined.If you really try to improve the user experience than don't block those out who started all this and still use a PC for most of their online needs!Adding different layouts is not really a hard thing unless you insist on custom made software to run all this here - than it takes efford to show you care about basic desing features!2. Forums and questionsUp until recently we had different sections for our forum topics.By far not enough but at least for most things there was a right place. Now it all one big mix of everything and still no proper sorting is possible.Topics/Questions that are a few days old wander down the list to be never seen again unless you love to scroll or follow only your Email notifications.Worst of all we now can't even see who made the last reply. The sorting inside is much better but still we lack custom sorting options or at least highlighting post/replies made after the last check of the topic. Not userfriendly at all, just much more complicated to find what you need - unless of course it was only done to get more topics and questions without caring what happens to them.3. EmbeddingAdding Links to other website is mostly fine but when it comes to pictures or videos I feel reverted back into the 90's.Everything must be done the way the developers here think is best. You want to explain something in detail with a lot of pics within your text to make it easy to follow and understand?Good luck as it will only work if you are fluent in basic HTML.A different font to really highlight something or even colored text? No way....Prefer to host your images offsite at a proper hoster?Again hope you know your HTML and that your hoster offers direct image links that are permanent...Time has moved on and user might not like to be treated as child and being constraint in the worst possible way.If someone want an image within the text then let him do so by drag and drop, better even to allow the text to flow around the image - really nice to explain an image with text on the side instead of at the top or bottom ;)The library is quite nice - if you like obscured filenames and no chance of sorting images by Instructables/topics/questions.Just the easiest way for the programming: by date with autogenerated filenames - back to the future ROFL4. EditingMade a spelling mistake in a reply or topic/question? Bad luck...Need to add some vital info to something you just posted? Why would you want to do that?Want to simply paste something you wrote up in Notepadd++ or some other editor? Great, if you like it all messed up...Even expecting to have editing options while writing is downgraded to less than what you Email client would allow for a funny bday greeting....Again: We are no longer in the 90's!You want users to be active and enjoy this website than give than what they started asking for many years ago!5. SortingAs mentioned before we need proper sorting options for replies, questions, topics...What is the point of having an active topic that runs down to page 4 or 5 of the list?Where is the most basic info in this list? Like who did last action, when did it happen? Why is it still impossible to quickly see the last replies/postings?With sometimes over 30 postings and even more replies it is next to impossible to find the stuff. If sorting options are above paygrade then at least iclude highlighting everything done after the last visit of this topic/question.And while at it, please give us back the forum sections and add some more ;)6. FeedbackAs said too many times: The developers/code monkeys need to find a way to communicated with each other and the users here! Can't even count how many times I heard things like: "We are working on it", "I will forward this to the developers", "We might include this in a future upgrade"....Seriously: What is the point of having (had) a bugs and feedback section if everyone now claims this all totally new and that nothing was ignored?Again to me it looks like "Let's do some majoy changes as my kid struggles to use this website on the tablet, while at it let's also hide some features and functions without announcing any changes we make!"It is confusing to say the least and I fail to understand why this website should be only optimised for people who can barely use a mobile device. Some of the users here might actually want to be able to have modern features that do beyong big buttons and oversized text.7. Featuring and contestsWhen I started here a featured Instructable was something that was standing out from the rest.Only in a few cases external links or certain providers of parts where present. Now even totally incomplete and impossible to follow Ibles find a way to get featured.Same for stuff that was done (better) at least 20 times before. Some spelling mistakes might be fine but if I struggle to understand what the user was writing I wonder how whoever featured it figured it all out.It often seems all that counts is a catchy header and some nice pics on the first two or three steps is enough :(But lately far too many "Instructables" are popping that not only get featured almost instantly but also only exist to advertise for a product or service - usually even indicated by the "username" behind it and the "homepage" linking to shop...Desperate much for money and not even honest enough to clearly indicate the advertisements or to push them into an advertising section?Similar story for contests :(Every now and then I get an invitaton to help judging a contest.Considering I only get to see the runners for the finals I often wonder how they got there. Some entries that (at least in my opinion) really stand out are not even in the list, instead I get some crappy ones with little efford for the workmanship or presentation - just a catching title and some nice pics. And when going for counters I see another problem:Some of the entries get featured and of course attract much more attention this way.I think it would be only fair to leave all contest entries untouched until a contest is over.It is hard enough to understand how the selection of winners made it into my ballot but copies, bad stuff and so on should not make it.And the fair go with featuring would mean the hits for an entry are not faked by being featured - feature it when the contest is over1 ;)And no, I don't try to insult or offend anyone here, just being honest and direct.Angry? Sure.Disappointed? Of course. Why? Because it could have been all soooo much better if someone would have cared to listen....
Topic by Downunder35m | last reply
Some might have noticed that I started a few, lets say, unconventional topics here.I added one just as a response to some very nasty feedback I got in other places. If you wonder what I am talking about check my topics about all things related to magnetism, "free energy" and such nonsense. The feedback I got was directed personal enough and verbal enough that I decided to increase my speed of seeding bread crumbs that might allow other people to "see" things slightly differently.Being called insane and mental case is the only things I use here as most of the rest would qualify as insults of the worst kind. The goal that was claimed I totally missed is to make people open up.Science or knowledge is as fluent as life itself. It eveloves with us, around us and through us.But we learned to use technology mostly to replace humans and to make our life easier. With that laziness also a reduced "desire" for knowledge and understand evolved. It is now far easier to "Google it" and forget it right after than to acutally learn and really understand something.A prime example is the disappearing artform of creating Japanese swords. No industrial process can produce a steel as pure and with such properties as used to be "offered" to the master swordsmith. Both are highly specialsed and rely on each other to create the perfect sword that outlasts generations.Once tradition gives way to modern life even this art will become a lost artform. We lost so much already, be it species, health, enviroment or just a "clean planet".Instead of accepting nature back into our scientific thinking and understanding we will continue to fail and get even more reluctant to learn new things. The blockbusters of science are no longer finding new laws of phsics or trying to understand things. We try to go further and further and use more and more dangerous ways to "create" the energy we continue to use more and more with no regrets.Well, other than complaining about the bills for it, which we wouldn't have otherwise...Why do we need more forms of colliding atoms to create energy? No because we need so much, only because we want more and more and at "centralised" locations.Distribution, control, money...Allowing us to use solar panels to reduce our electricity bill is nice, but try to overdo it and make good money by creating you own solar panel park and you get into trouble already. You can't see it anywhere other then back to your provider. And you only get whatever he thinks is a fair price for it, usually far less than what you pay to get it.Once you reach zero some even won't pay you money at all.And since there is always winter and night times it is only good that there will be always a need for electricity from the grid.Just try to get rid of your elecricity, water and gas connection in a township or city in case you found other sources you get for free.....Even if you build new most won't even allow you to without these "required" connections. If you need waste waster you also need tap water you pay for.And since a waste water treatment is no longer hyginic enough (despite proving the opposite) you can't get out.Gas you might be able to avoid but if there is electricity in the stree than it is already a building requirement to provie to the builder...What if all this nonsense and fakery actually has a true background somewhere?Humans are not meant to fly but we developed planes anyways. What once was a dream for a select few is now the prefered travel mode ofr most going on a far away holiday. But it is only so popular because there is a big demand. And where is demand profit can be made.Like a farmer:If you have ton of corn like twenty farmers around you then your local price will be low.Sell them a bit further away and you might get a lot more.In return our demand is closly related to the demands of those that provide the source of your demands. We all need energy and we evolve into a society that will need more of with every new generation.I try to give you hint in the form of a comparison:If you have a nice man cave and love to tinker than you might have a framed hand drill on the wall to remind you of how it all started for your grandfather.Or in most case you just liked it and got it for 2 bucks from a garage sale LOLEither, imagine all electricity would be gone and lost forever.Suddenly this crappy drill becomes a status symbol because only you can do things other people really struggle with - you drill holes with ease...Imagine the rpice you could ask to sell it..."Free energy" is the same but sadly in reverse. If a company sees a profit than it will be utilised some way.And if it happens that energy is your main income and keeps you rich and in control than you don't mind paying two or three fortunes to someone so he can forget and is happy give you his machine.Or would you really say no to life of no limits and with nothing to worry for your future generations of kids and grandkids?A few tried anyway to make a furtune themself by keeping a circle of trusted persons and finding enough willing investors to get their project going.Even if you can find some flaws there are still doubts about what someone would go through the lenght of providing online updates, sales numbers, testimonials and so on for years.Funny enough actually finding someone who is sceptic and make him check and report about it does not work either. No big university orders one or asks to really check it and provide a real world testimonial. No government or legal agency steps in to stop the "fraud" either. What is real, what is fake, what is disguise - you can figure it out if you want to.Ok, I could, but why bother if litereally everyone one already did and showed nothing works when it comes to the great unknown?Exactly for that reason alone it is worth it!People might make money now from ads or through clickbait but the topic is older than the internet already. And the proof even older than electricity...So many people would not try unless someone convinced them to try it ;)Might be just a bad joke but gets the point:If you ask 20 people if you can swim through the river to get to the other side then you might get confusing answers.1. No problem it is safe.Fully true but the guy might be from far up the river where it has no crocodiles in it...2. You could try it but a boat is safer as there might be corcodiles here.Still leaves you the option to swim as you can't be sure about the reptiles...You could go on and create a near endless list with bridges up ahead and so on.What it comes to is that depending on HOW you ask and WHO you ask the answers can be as different as day and night. In terms of science and making someone understand it take the most basic approach possible.Remember that time in school when your math teacher confronted you the existence of negative numbers? The confusion with the zero and how to add, subtract or multiply...Your teacher might have been great or you a quick learner but imagine the worst possible way to teach you an understanding of negative numbers! You know that 5 - 8 equals -3.You learned that this is true and why it is so.Imagine your teacher would have explained this extra simple like back with the apples when learning to add numbers."If there are 5 people in a room and 8 people leave the room, then 3 people must go back in so that room is empty!"Makes total sense if you expand the number game from above to 5 - 8 + 3 = 0 !!No sense at all however if you do it with people ;)People are not numbers, pressures or volumes, they are "real" to us.We associate certain things automatically, other we learn to associate and interpret through learning.Learning however is no longer actually doing all that would be involved in less technological world. We like magic tricks because we fail to understand how it is done or sometimes even how it is possible.Today it is for entertainment only.A true magician would never use his skills to scam people. But spend enough and research and you can do the same trick you saw on stage. Some not as good or not all though - thats life...Ask a good magician how how long it took him to get his new trick ready for the stage and quite often you get to hear it was years in the making.Think about that fact when you judge what is possible by dedication ;)

Getting Started 1.1 What is Instructables? In a sentence: Instructables is a web-based documentation platform where passionate people share what they do and how they do it, and learn from and collaborate with others. A bit more in depth: It was created by Eric Wilhelm, a mechanical engineer, and launched in August 2005. Instructables is dedicated to step-by-step collaboration among members to build a variety of projects. Users post instructions to their projects, usually accompanied by visual aids, and then interact through comment sections below each Instructable step as well in topic forumsWhile a member of the Media Lab at MIT, Wilhelm co-founded Squid Labs, an engineering and technology company specializing in design and consulting. Instructables started as an internal Squid Labs project, which Wilhelm has since spun out as an independent company and acts as CEO.The original content focused mostly on such projects as building electronic or mechanical devices to solve common problems around the home. The scope of the project has expanded to include a larger array of categories, including arts and crafts, food, home, life, offbeat (first known as "not liable") and recently knex, transportation and tech. The site allows uploading of photos, diagrams, video and animation to help explain complex terminology and mechanisms in clear and understandable termsRead more about the history...Also, Read our About to see who works here1.2 How does the Site make money? Is it profitable? The site is mainly supported by ads, which you see in the sidebars and sometimes at the top of the page. Here is the full explanationIs Instructables profitable? - Almost. According to ewilhelm , the site generates enough money, that it usually covers its running costs, but not quite enough yet to be constantly profitable. 1.3 What is the Instructables Robot? The Instructables Robot is Instructable's mascot. His main function is to greet new members and alert members when they receive comments or messages. The robot is friendly and welcoming. You can easily find him around Instructables. You can tell the robot to alert you if you receive a comment in your personal settings. Likewise, you can tell him to stop doing so anytime at your personal settings.Nobody knows how exactly the robot came to Instructables.....time may tell......1.4 How can I get started here? You probably want to upload an image to your profile. You can do that here , as well as change some of your other account settings, like making View all Steps in one page your default. After that, check out How to make a great Instructable , The Guided Tour of Instructables, and the Help Group if you have any questions.1.5 Who can Help me get started here? ANYONE! all users are helpful. If you are confused, or have a question, don't be afraid to ask in the forum of a member of the community. Our members are happy to help newcomers get comfortable. You are more likely to get lots of help through an open thread, but you can ask questions privately (say, for a project in development) through the "Private Message" system.Have a look at other FAQs in the FAQ Section1.6 What does DIY mean?DIY means Do-It-Yourself. It means that instead of buying expensive stuff, make it yourself and save some money. The main idea of Instructables is to make things and share them with others. You will be surprised about how much money you could save if you do things yourself, and we are here to help you.1.7 What can I write an Instructable about?Bearing in mind our family nature, anything at all. If you're passionate about it, and want to tell others how you do it, then write an Instructable. If you're looking for inspiration, check out the Burning Questions to get you started. When you're a bit more familiarized try entering our Contests1.8 What's the difference between an Instructable and a slideshow? In an Instructable, you show detailed step-by step details on how to make or do something. A slideshow is used when you do not have enough documentation or material for a full Instructable. In a slideshow, you can show off projects or things that you have made. If you want to show something, but its not enough to fill an instructable, you can show pictures of it in a slideshow and write a short summary of the project.1.9 What is a video on Instructables? If you do not want to write a full instructable, but you want to present something that can't be fit into a slideshow, you can embed a video as an individual section.1.10 How can I unpublish my Instructable? It's a slightly-roundabout route, but if you click the edit function, then the publish, and unpublish options appears lower down the screen.2. The Community2.1 How can I make text effects like bold, italic , small text and upper small text?Read this helpful Section by Instructables member NachoMahma2.2 Why doesn't my Instructable show up on the search page when I type the name? Instructables are reviewed by the Robot and his human minions before being added to the public pages. Be patient, it may not have gone through the filter yet. Is your instructable lacking images? Sometimes instructables without images fail to go through the filter. On weekends and Holidays, where there is an influx of people posting projects, it may take longer than normal for it to show up in the Most Recents. If there is a problem with your work, someone on staff will PM you.Your instructable may have been caught by the spam filter. If it has, contact anyone in the Instructable team, and they will check it out for you. Just Be Patient.2.3 What kind of material is considered offensive? What kind of material should be avoided?Pornography - Any and all pornographic material is considered offensive. Posting images or links that include pornography is strictly prohibited. This is a family friendly site, children often browse this site.Language - If you wouldn't show it or say it to your headteacher at school, don't show or say it here.Insults and flaming - We have a "be nice" policy here. Please be positive and constructive with your comments or risk being banned from our site.Spam - Spamming, misleading links and site advertising on the forums, orangeboards, instructables, and Private Messaging are strictly prohibited. However, offers and advertising are allowed in the For Sale Section2.4 Why am I asked to give a number when I send a Private message to someone? This is called a Captcha. A captcha is when you are asked a number or word that appears as an image or sound. The purpose of this is to stop automated spam robots from spamming our Community.2.5 Can I ask for homework help on the forums?Of course! Our community is more than happy to help any way possible! Be sure to post in in the right category, because you wont get much science help in our craft section!2.6 How can I improve the community? You can help our community in many different ways:Be positive and constructive in your comments. We are a friendly and welcoming community, feel free to comment and incorporate yourself into forum topics and discussions. Our members are happy to help and guide newcomers in any way they can.Report offensive material. If you spot material that might be considered offensive or SPAM, click the "flag" button next to the comment or instructable. The Staff will review and take action if necessary.2.7 I've spotted an offensive ad! What can I do?If you spot an ad that qualifies as offensive, right click (not left click!) on it and choose properties. In Firefox, you can right-click and select "Copy Link Location". Copy the URL and report it to a staff member so they can take immediate action. If possible, it is also good to take snapshots of the page (On your keyboard, press Prt Scrn and paste it on MS paint or another image editing program) then present it to a staff member.2.8 Can I post Instructables in other languages?Of Course! We would be extremely happy to add instructables with languages other than english. If you need help with some words or terms, feel free to ask around on our community! Proper grammar and spelling are compulsory in any language. We have a lot of users who are fluent in many languages including Spanish, German and French.3. Other Instructables Features3.1 How do contests work? There is no complete answer to that question, as different contests have different rules. Usually, a contest follows these steps:1) A staff member usually announces that a new contest is coming, and what the theme will be, so members will start getting ideas2) The Contest is announced in the front page3) A staff member will post an instructable on how to enter the contest, and will show full details about it.4) The Contest is then opened for entries.5) After a specific time, the entry deadline closes and the winners are chosen either by the staff of by community votes (Depends on the contests specific rules) and are announced. There are two kinds of contests:- Regular contests are the ones that last a month. These contests also set the month's specific theme. These contests are usually sponsored by a company that is related to the theme. For this reason, prizes almost always come from the companies themselves. Regular contest feature more expensive prizes.- Speed contests are those that only last a predefined time. They are called speed contests, because users have to submit their entries before a close deadline. Since they last such a short time, there are usually more than one speed contest can be held in one same month. In some rare occasions, there can be more than one active Speed Contest at a time. Speed contests usually have more and less expensive prizes than regular contests.3.2 Are contests decided by the staff or the community? It depends on the Contest's specific rules. When an Instructable is chosen by the community, the winners may have multiple categories, such as best rated, most viewed, most votes and others. When the staff decides the winners, they usually take the community's reaction to it as a factor in choosing the winners.3.3 What is Burning Questions?Burning Questions is a regular event in Instructables, where the staff (usually Noahw since he manages it) posts a list of Wanted Instructables that haven't been made.Users submit their entries and the best instructable that answers a question on the list wins a prize. Since there are so many prizes (One for each question), Burning Question Prizes are less expensive, so there can be more prizes.(Originally, the prize was an Instructables Shirt, but as the community grew, more instructables were requested, and the prizes were getting more expensive, so now, the prize is usually a Prize Pack consisting of various Instructables Merchandise)When a winner is chosen, the staff will send him/her a Private Message telling them how to claim their prize. The staff publishes a new round every now and then (currently, we should be expecting Round 5.)Rules:Although the rules are posted in the same posts that the questions are announced, these rules are important, and if not followed, an entry wont qualify: - The Instructable must have pictures in every step. These pictures must be related to the instructable. - The Instructable must be of good quality. It must have proper grammar and steps must be clearly understandable and detailed - The title must be the same as the question, or else it wont be accepted. If the question is how to fold a shirt, the Instructable's title must be exactly that.3.4 Why is Burning Questions Held?Burning Questions has 2 purposes:Getting people to create Instructables wanted amongst the communityImproving the site's "googleabilty". Since many questions start with How to...., it helps the site appear more prominently amongst search engines like Google.3.5 If Burning Questions is chosen by the staff, then why does it have a voting option for the Instructables?Burning Questions winners are chosen by the staff. The voting option is available because Burning Questions has been implemented into the new Contest Section, because of various reasons.Although it is the staff who choose the winners, the community's response to the instructables is also a factor in the decision. 3.6 If I submit 2 answers to Burning Questions, and they both win, do I get 2 Prize Packs? No, if you answer 2 questions in one Burning Questions Contest, the staff will send you a surprise extra gift along with your Prize Pack.3.7 What regions are eligible to participate in contests? Some contest are open to any country, while sadly others are not available for some countries. Take your time and carefully read the rules and details of contests so you can save time or make arrangements.3.8 How can my Instructable get more views? The main thing you can do to get more views is to make something interesting and likable. If you want more views, try posting a forum topic so people can learn about it. Instructables with good and clear steps might even be featured on the Front page- the most trafficked part of Instructables.com3.9 How are Instructables featured? Members who have shown to be very helpful inside our community are handpicked by the Instructables staff and are given the ability to feature an instructable is they consider it meets the criteria for Featuring. As Instructables are featured they appear on the homepage, the most trafficked part of the site. 3.10 What does an Instructable need to be featured? It needs to be good - clear, easily-read Instructions, plenty of useful photos, in focus and probably using your camera's Macro Function (Click here for additional info on using the macro setting) , and additional notes on the images to explain extra points. You should use full and proper language - capitalize sentences, check your spellings and don't use sms-speak. (cuz-because). English isn't compulsory, but correct grammar and spelling are.If it is original idea, a novel approach or an enjoyable read, with carefully-arranged images, then it is more likely to be featured.3.11 How can I be selected to be able to feature? If you produce consistently-good Instructables, and especially if you take an active, useful part in the community, you may be approached by Eric ( ewilhelm ) to join the team. There is no set number of members of the team, but new members are not often invited.4. This section is still fairly new, so some changes might still happen.5. Current events and Glitches5.1 I just rated an Instructable, but it says that it hasn't been rated yet!The current rating system is fairly new. Before, the rating system was simply the option to give it a plus, or a minus. Our new Rating System is based on the one described hereThe new rating system, consists of the ability to give it a rating from a scale of 0.0 to 5.0. This system is represented by a line of stars. You may also give ratings like 3.5 and 2.5.This new system is not yet complete, and there are a few bugs to work out. Currently when you rate something, it is queued to be processed during Instructables' overnight Bayesian rating algorithm-run and does not update immediately.Until it is complete, you might notice somethings, like for example, that most Instructables will have a rating lower than 4.5.2 I just saw a comment that says it was posted -xx minutes ago! What should I do?This is a small glitch we are currently experiencing. The staff is aware of this, so please, do not report this as a bug or make a forum topic about it. It is nothing serious and out staff are working to fix it. Instructables runs on a couple of servers. Sometimes, the serves receive different information, and when they each compare their information, they might get confused and say that the post was made at a time that is not possible. The following people have contributed to this FAQ:* Kiteman* NachoMahma* Brennn10ewilhelmThanks for your help!I hope this Section has helped answer any questions you might have.Have a question that should appear here? Private message me and I will answer as soon as I can.
