Interview with IKEA on Sustainability

I knew about IKEA's cutting of costs with flat packing, but it's cool to hear them talk about dealing with several different issues of sustainability. ideas: - save on resources, save on environment - looking to use more renewable energy, even producing solar and wind energy themselves. Goal of 60% renewable by 2009 - thinking of biofuel transport - trying to get more local suppliershttp://www.grist.org/news/maindish/2007/02/27/ikea/index.html?source=biz

Author Spotlight Interviews: Nominate an author!

We recently began a new round of author spotlight interviews. For the first interview, we chose to reach out and chat with Nikus, who recently won the grand prize in this year's Epilog Contest. You can check out our interview here: Author Spotlight: NikusThese interviews are a great way to learn a little more about individual contributing authors here on Instructables, and see what makes them tick! Is there someone who is an active author that you'd be interested in learning more about? Now's your chance to nominate a fellow author. There are no set requirements to be eligible to be nominated. But generally, we're looking for authors who've shared a good handful of high-quality projects, which made a notable splash within the Instructables community. And yes, if you're feeling bold, you may certainly nominate yourself! : )

Hey Instructablers, I have an interview this coming tuesday for MIT, and my EC told me to bring a resume/activities list. Featured Author Interview: watchmeflyy

Hello! I recently had the joy of interviewing watchmeflyy. Connie Yu was interviewed quite awhile ago, but her interview went missing for a time when the featured author interviews stopped. Since we've changed up the format a little, I wanted to share some of her answers that didn't make it into the interview. If you have any more questions that you would like watchmeflyy to answer, here's the place to do it! Where are you from? Do you feel like your home affects how you work or what you create? I was born and raised in the west side San Francisco, a 10 minute jog from the Pacific Ocean, but my parents trace their roots back to Guangdong province in China. Growing up in a low-income family of immigrants, I couldn't just ask for model plane kits or other toys that my peers flaunted; I had to come up with my own toys and use what I had to entertain myself, my way. This developed my resourcefulness and creativity early on, so I'm glad not to have been born with a silver spoon in my mouth. As for what I create, that mainly just depends on my mood. The quote "Necessity is the mother of invention" usually applies, as I make whatever I refuse to buy. You do such lovely work with wire; what is about that medium that you love? I love how wire can be so flexible yet so sturdy at the same time. Unlike paper, wire creations are generally more durable and harder to crush. It also lacks the problem of having excess sticking out; excess wire can be cut off, whereas excess paper must be tucked in somehow (no cutting in origami...). These added benefits over paper give wire more versatility, as I feel less limited in the creations that I can make. Your pop culture oriented (geek) projects are such fun. What draws you create such projects? Those geeky projects help me enter the worlds that I explore through books and movies. While I don't participate in cosplay, I do enjoy bringing little parts of the stories to life, and it's so much more fun when you have your own tale of how you created. For example, if you check out my Simple Suspended Shelf project, you can see pictures of a ceramic Haku from Spirited Away that I made in ceramics class – a tale of perseverance that I recount in exhaustive detail when anyone asks about the awesome dragon in my room. I also like my geeky projects because I can attach a special meaning to them as a continual reminder to myself. My wire Masamune from "FFX: Auron's Masamune" serves as a continual reminder of Auron's strength and determination to inspire my own, and my Aperture tank top from Portal: Chell's Tank Top (which I wear to sleep next to the plush Companion Cube that my mom and I made, of course) reminds me that if Chell could survive trial after trial, so can I.

UPDATE on Radio Interview on Craftsman Experience

The Down and Dirty radio show hosted by Frank Fontana from HGTV has asked me talk for a short piece on their  Down and Dirty radio show hosted by Frank Fontana from HGTV.  If all goes accordingly, the interview  will happen around  12:40pm ET on Wed 8/10 and will be a 5 minute segment.  They stream live at blogtalkradio.com/diy and livestream.com/craftsmanexperience at 11am CT every Wednesday and Sunday,  in the event anyone wants to tune in to it.  These same folks interviewed Randofo (Randy) awhile back, so I am pretty excited about this. *sigh*  Figures this would occur in the middle of Verizon's STIKE !   They dropped my call, twice....I finally got back to them and apologized.....thankfully most of the "story" got told, so I am told.   I wonder if they record it for later listening ?   MINE is here,  around the 44 minute mark (if you care to hear me for a few minutes and then listen as my phone dies.....

Looking for Makers to do Research Interview

Hello! I'm doing research on people who make things (artists, hackers, crafters, etc.). I'm a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon and an intern this summer at Yahoo Research. I'm talking to people about one of their projects where they tried to make something new, something they hadn't tried before. The interview is about how the project got started, where they found helpful information, interesting things that happened, how they felt about it at the end, etc. The goal of this research is to understand the role of online resources in the process of making. Would you be interested in participating? The interview is about an hour or so. If you're in the bay area, we can meet in a convenient place for a casual conversation about your work and experiences. If you're not in the area or that's not convenient, we can chat on the phone or over IM. We have gift certificates to thank participants for their time. Contact me via instructables or email me at goodatmakingstuff@yahoo.com with any questions at all.

Adam Savage Mentions Instructables in an interview

Albeit briefly, Adam Savage (of Mythbusters fame) , when asked for project suggestions for a 4.5 year old suggested instructables. Not really huge news, but I found it interesting. (He mentions it at about 26 minutes and 9 seconds in to the video). Not really sure what category this would go under, so I'm putting it here.

How to improve my public speaking and interviewing skills? Answered

Much to my surprise I've been doing a fair number of media interviews lately. (TV, radio, podcast)  I'm not really happy with the way that I sound.  I either sound a bit scatterbrained or uncertain.  I meander, give run-on sentences, finish different sentences than I start, etc.  This happens even if I get the questions in advance. Usually the interviews are taped and the editors work hard to make me sound coherent, but even then my speech is full of pauses, "um"s and "ah"s.  I'd like to break myself of the habit.  So any hints, tips, ways to practice and/or relax more?

In an interview, the boss trying to negotiate with your expected salary, what will you do?

I find it quite hard in dealing the salary with boss whenever its come to  an interview session. I am facing this problem not because of I set my expected salary high. It is because I know my self well, I am kind of person that  not firm enough in my point sometime. (sincerely thought that) and I am kind of soft hearted person. and I am very easy to deal with everything. I am an illustrator cum graphic designer. My working experience (2 yrs). I set my expected salary wise, where i though i really deserve that price. -based of my qualification and working experience. But when come to interview, the boss usually likes to negotiate my expected salary. They will try to make it lower than my expected price. Even though I try to fight it back in the first stage, but eventually I give up. If I decided to work for that job, I may end up feeling unsatisfying to my monthly salary.  Upon of all this problem I have facing.... Anyone have any suggestion for me to stand strong on my point? or any solution for me? I need to know, so that next time when I come to interview I can have ready and make sure I satisfy my salary.  thx :]

Do elective courses matter in universities? Answered
