Inverter question? Answered

I have recently made a pond in my garden and to avoid spending lots of money in electricity, I decided that I would power it with a solar panel. My pump is 220v 34w, so I thought that a 40 or 50w solar panel should work. However, i can't find any 40-50w inverter, only about 150w. So, my question is, will a 150w inverter draw 150w from the solar panel if powering only the 34w pump? In other words, will a 40-50w solar panel be able to power a 34w pump via a 150w inverter or would I need a 150W solar panel for that?

The Inverted Map

This map reimagines the Earth with the idea that the oceans are the land masses and the continents are the oceans. It's interesting to see a world map where everything is connected and it would be possible to walk the entire circumference. It reminds us that what is "normal" comes from our own personal experiences.Whether the map is a Mercator map, a Peters map, or a map of something besides the Earth, that map can have a huge effect on how you perceive it. Just like statistics, maps can be deceiving so make sure you're questioning the sources and get the best information you can. link

inverter on a camera flash

Ive been studying the intertubes for a bit now and I cant seem to find an explanation on how a disposable camera flash works in detail. I mean I understand that it runs with two transformers, one at 300v output to charge the cap and the other to help discharge the payload through the xenon bulb run at 2000v output. but a transformer doesn't work with out a pulse or rapid continuous change in voltage. so how is it inverting to ac or am I missing something stupid

Square wave inverter?

I am building an inverter that will use a square wave pulse to drive MOSFET's at 50-60Hz. I have read and heard a lot of stuff that running square wave into a transformer is not a good idea, what I want to know how bad is it? Also will adding capacitors as seen in my image be able to smooth the square wave a bit to help the problem? If so what capacitance should I use? (About 200A input) (The 12V square wave is coming from paralleled MOSFET's)

Inverted color crosshair?

Hello robots. Is there any to get a small dot center of your screen that inverts all color behind it? Kind of like the Minecraft crosshair, except it is always shown in the foreground on top off all programs. My little bro plays like this on his t.v. but with small piece of tape in the exact center. It would be really useful while playing FPS games. I know I'm making things complicated, but I'd rather not have adhesive residue on my monitor.

Meaning that when 20v is considered off and 2v is considered on.

Inverter to Flaslight bulb?

I am building a basic night light ordeal, and I used a photoresistor to detect the change in light. Of course, the photoresistor will, by default, only have a high output when there is light, so I used an inverter (Not Gate). My inverter is made up of a transistor , a 1.5k resistor, a 10k resistor, and leads off to a LED. The photoresistor would go off to the Base of the transistor, so it can invert the output. Originally, I had this hooked up to a 4.5 volt input (the photoresistor has 4.5 volts going to it, and the transistor had 4.5 volts going into it), but I wanted to brighten it up, so I upped the voltage to 7.5 volts so I could add a 6.3V Incandescent Flashlight Bulb (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2102809). When I hook this up to a regular 6 volt battery pack, I easily turn the light on. When I connect it to the inverter, however, I don't get anything going on. I've upped the input voltages to 9 Volts, but still, no dice. Everything works fine until I change the LEDs to the bulb. So far, I've changed the resistor values in both directions (I've decreased them down to 10 Ohms, and increased them to a max of 1M Ohms). The only way I can possibly get this to work is by removing the Resistor going to the Collector, but then it is constantly on. The output of the photoresistor no longer matters. The output of the inverter is constantly high. Any ideas? All help is appreciated.

DC supply for inverter

Hello. I need to figure out the component values for a "simple" high current power supply... and whether the component costs would even be feasible. I plan on buying a 3Kw output 12 DC inverter for use in Spain. I have several US devices that I don't want to run off a step-down transformer as running them at 50Hz instead of 60Hz will cause heating and eventual failure (I experimented with my Technics power amp, it got very hot and started to smell, then the output went way down... it's now on the "one of these days I'll open this up and take a look" pile). So, what I need to design is a 220 to 12 volt/300 amp unregulated supply. Ideas, anyone?

3 Phase inverter explanation?

I am trying to make sense of how to create a simple 3 phase inverter, but the design I have found requires the use of a PIC micro controller for pulsed width modulation to control the 3 half inverters in the image below. I do not have experience with this specific type of micro controller and am unable to find a simple explanation of how to set it up to do this, except how to connect it to the basic circuit at the transistor bases. Would anyone be able to explain to me how to wire/program/control frequency with the pic micro controller or an alternative method that would yield 3 phase power (0-120-240) because the manual and this page have be very very hard to understand to a beginner. I do not need any sort of feedback from the motor because the load will be constant and relatively small, and will most likely run it either at a constant or if easily doable linearly increasing frequency. Can someone PLEASE give me a good simple set of instructions on how to either replace this micro controller with something simpler or wire/program it to do this? Thanks!

Building a switch to invert current

I got a small electrical engine the other day, and I have to hook it up to two switches so that one switch starts the engine clockwise and the other counter-clockwise. My initial thought was to simply hook it up to two separate batteries each with a switch and one with the current reverted (like illustrated). But I'm wondering if there's a better way to go about this. For instance I have no idea if accidently activating both switches simultaneously will blow up the engine :s

12v to 120v sine inverter boosting

I have a 20 year old van. The a/c leaked and it is much cheaper to buy a 120v window unit ($140 with a 3-year walk-in exchange warranty) than to pay a shop to rebuilt the vehicle a/c. I chose a 5k BTU window unit that uses 4.1 amps running, and have a 1k watt sine wave inverter. Alone, the inverter will not start the a/c unit, but will power the fan. I confirmed a trick to start motors with an inverter. I connected an 8" bench grinder to the inverter and started it. It took a few restarts to get it up to speed. Then I started the a/c and it ran without problems. The bench grinder motor was able to supply the reactive power the a/c compressor needed to start. Both continued to run without straining the van's alternator. BUT, I don't want to travel with a running bench grinder going, that's not safe. Is there another way to supply the reactive boost that is safe to travel with? Once I get a simple stable way to run the a/c I'll work on a mount to vent the hot side. The van has sliding windows.

SSTC using microwave oven inverter?

I recently obtained a microwave oven inverter and I've been doing a lot of research trying to figure out how to power it. The microwave I found came with schematics and a decoder for the button membrane so I am able to operate the main control board and the MICOM board outside of the unit (with slight modifications) but I have yet to test the inverter in fear of blowing it up. Currently my question is can I build a 555 PWM to cheat the CPU or bypass it completely? if not then I suppose I could use the microwaves original circuitry to do so but I'd like to build a nice solid state tesla coil with it if possible.  Instructables is being retarded and wont let me add notes to my pictures  image one - Main control board to the left, MICOM control board in the middle, Iverter on the right image two - Slight modifications to power the board outside of the microwave image three - Used decoding chart to operate main circuit without button assembly image four and five - Showing the output of the MICOM board going to the CPU on the inverter and settings of Oscope (channel A)

Noob Q about inverter for an ornithopter

I was looking in the back of my Jameco catalog the other day and they listed a product called "Muscle wire". It's apparently a nickel-titanium alloy that shrinks as it heats up. It occurred to me that I could flap ornithopter wings with it (a really small ornithopter). I was trying to figure out how I could switch voltage from one pair of wires (the flap UP wires) to the other pair of wires (the flap DOWN wires) without a microchip. I came up with something I'm sure wouldn't work involving a couple transistors, a diode and a cap. Today on wikipedia I figured out that what I was doing was something close to an inverter. So here's the question: Anyone know of a simple switching circuit that runs on a/c power and does not have square-wave switching characteristics?I'll keep researching this myself, but sometimes 'tis quicker to ask the big-brained and kind hearted (you know who you are).

How does this CCFL inverter work? Answered

Hello, I have this CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light) inverter from a scanner. it powers the scanner light. That's the schematic, but I can't see all the components very good, I'm sure about everything that's noted in the schematic, but I don't know the value of that capacitor between both collectors. It's that brown one from the picture. So the question is: How does this circuit work? I'm still trying to figure out how the transistors switch, it's really weird, because when I try recreating this on my breadbord it doesn't work. And why is the first coil shorted out? What I do know about this is that it has an output voltage (very low current, serveral micro amps) of 2 to 3kV. It also works at a very high frequency, about 30kHz I think, and it has a ferrite core transformer. The primary windings are very thick, and there are about 10 turns. the secondary has Many windings, a few thousand. The primary current is limited by the frequency (Xl = 2*Pi*f*L) so high frequency means high resistance of the coil, and that means a low current. now  how does the switching process work? and what's the use of the brown capacitor?
