Small capacity invertor to make one house full of light
Question by ron2790 | last reply
IS it better to buy a lower Watt version if we are not going to use full capacity to conserve battery? SLA 7amp, 600w 110v inverter with a 9w light load = operation time? is it better to charge a netbook with a cigarette adapter say 9v VS an inverter and Netbooks Brick?

Hi seen your ads on google very enlightening. Was wondering if you could advise me. I have 2 strip lights that i run off my 1000w invertor poweredby a 12v car battery that dies after a while. My kids bought me 2 x 20w solar panels12v. Can i just join the negs and positives together from the panels and connect straight to the battery neg and pos or is more involved. I also have another battery I can join too,Would i need diodes and a controller also? thanks in advance Dougie

My laptop battery is 10.8 volts. The charger I assume inverts ac to dc current to charge the battery. I also assume that if there are any ac voltage requirements in the laptop it must have an internal invertor from dc back to ac. The charger input is 110-240volts 1.7 amps. The output is 18.5 volts 3.5 amps. My question is why can't a 12 volt source like a jumper box be used to run the laptop, when the battery is low, through the port that the charger is plugged in when charging the battery. My thinking is that the battery being 10.8 volts dc is charged with up to 18.5 voltsdc then it would be safe to plug in a 12 volt battery source. Thanks for your time!

This project came about because someone cut the power line going to my house. The power company was slow to fix it, so I cobbled together a way to charge auto batteries for my invertor. The generator is the motor from a discarded electric scooter ( model MY1016 from JX Motor Co., rated 24v input and 2750 rpm). I removed the motor, it’s drive chain, and sprocket wheel and attached it to the frame of a discarded bike. The pictures show the details. By cranking furiously, I can charge a 12v battery with about 3/4 amp of current. There is a small epoxy rectifier to block the battery from driving the motor. This thing was made from parts on hand and cost me only the assembly time. I don’t have any sources or price lists.

I have been intrested in optical computer for a while but found them rather expensive to build so I tried to look for cheaper ways to build some key features like the gates. The basic idea is to use solar cells that power a led. For and OR-Port you use solarcells where it is enough that one of the side gets light to make the led burn. To make and AND-port, you can put a resitor in between so that it really needs the power form both channel sot make a led burn. For a NOT-port you put an invertor in, so that when it burns it gives no signal, and wheren it does not receive light it burns this because of a battery it caries. A NOT-port is almost like a led-throwie.I do hav emore but wanted to know if this would be a good place or not, or if someones intrested in hearing on how to build a full optical computer, still basic, but almost completly optical, or if it would be better to post this on the microprocessor group at the opencourseware of the MIT ?
