The Future of Invisibility

It is reported that a team of researches at the University of California, Berkeley claim to be on the doorstep of invisibility. Using a special type of metamaterial they are bending electromagnetic waves and negatively refracting visible light. Their ultimate goal is to render entire objects invisible to the naked eye. After reading this, I conducted some invisibility experiments of my own. Based on my initial experiments with invisibility cloaking, I must concede that we are not quite there yet, but are getting close (see image). For more information, read the full news report

invisible comments

Several family members are now Instructable members so occasionally we like to check and see what each other has said about an Instructable. On every occasions when we go to the Instructable comment section we can not find each other's comments. To double check we swapped member names and passwords but as feared we could only see the comments for the member names we were logged under. Ironically we can see all (?) comments by other members. I logged this as a bug and sent several emails to info@instructables.com but nothing, no response and no reply. Has anyone else experienced this trouble or have any idea of the cause?

Invisible concrete cube

This concrete cube made by Daniel Franke and Markus Kison has the amazing ability to turn invisible. Thanks to eye-tracking and a video projector for each face of the cube, the cube has the view behind it projected onto its faces. The result is like looking through a glowing window instead of a cube. You can see the effect in the video. It's not entirely smooth yet, but a very cool idea. Further Advances in Invisibility

As those of you who have been fervently following my posts for over a year know, last summer I was working on making myself invisible. While my the results of my experiment were lackluster, it appear that a man in China has nearly perfected the technique. He says his quest towards invisibility started in 2005 as a protest of the Chinese government who had shut down his art studio. You can see some of the results of his research here.

Invisible Book Shelf

This is a variation on the Invisible Book Shelf that I did (but didn't document). It allows you to keep all your reading books while getting some use out of an old phone book. This book is a shelf, a "safe", and a mystery to those who haven't discovered the secret yet.The photos below will tell all (except the first.. I just wanted to show off one of my patches). Any questions, just ask.The total weight of the books on the "shelf" is: 19.8 lbs.

Invisible Unpublished Instructables

It looks like, if you happen to save more than 10 unpublished instructables/slideshows, the unpublished page does not show the helpful little "1-10 of XX {Next}" information and button (like it does in the published section). If I add "&offset;=10" to the URL though it does take me to the correct page(s).

Invisible shelf hangers?

I have a 6' x 1'x cubby hole in a wall that I'd like to add shelves to. I don't want to lose any of the room instead the hole with hangers of any kind, or have them be seen. Is there a way to hang the shelves so that the hangers won't be seen? I was thinking small pegs of some kind that the shelves would slide on top of. I assume that would need a router, though, which I don't have.

Invisible Comments, now with video.

I've just noticed - if you enclose a comment in , they don't show up on your "comments" page.  You just get an empty space with the name of the person who posted it. I guess the system thinks that the contents of are supposed to be code of some sort, but it's an odd effect anyway. As an aside - what is the best you can do with the image below? (The second version is a PNG file, just in case you'd prefer.) Lemonie's video...

Comment going down the memory hole....

As has been reported by other users, I occasionally end up posting "invisible" comments, either at the top level, or as replies to someone else.  These comments are visible to me when I view the forum topic, Question, or Instructable (and the comment count includes them in that view!).  However, the forum browsing page doesn't show them (neither as "last post" nor in the count), and they are not visible to any other users. My most recent example is in BIGHAIRYDUDE's bug report. I posted one comment at 4:18 pm (CAGESVXGGMMFD6M), and another at 5:08 pm (CTRYNTKGGMMFDBI). Those strings are the commentId values, which I can see on the page when I do "view source"! I constructed the URLs by hand. If I use those links in another session where I'm not logged in, they don't work. But if I log in there (on Safari, so there's no chance of cookie or cache confusion), then my comments appear! This behaviour is unpredictable. It seems to happen once or twice a week. When it does, the particular forum topic or whatever is affected permanently (i.e., any comment I try to post is invisible), but other topics are not affected at all. I know that's going to make it hard to isolate and fix, but I'm hoping that the IDs might be of some help...

I can't see my instructable

Last night I published this instructable, but I can not see it in ALL RECENT option. However, it has a comment. I don't understand... What worries me is that when you solve the problem, my instructable will appear "backward" or as posted several hours ago, and many people will not see it, for that reason.

Micro Invisible fence transmitter

I am looking to have a Micro transmitter for an invisible fence made. This will need to trigger the invisible fence shock collar when it gets within 2 feet. I have a dog with a shock collar that attacks a smaller, older dog in the house. I want a transmitter that will fit on the collar of the smaller dog, run off of batteries with a LED to show it is powered on. I have an extra receiver to test with, and i can send photos of the transmitter and what information i have. Willing to pay COD for delivery.

How to Make an Invisible Trail?

I am trying to make a hidden trail that can only be followed with a black light. This will essentially be done by following a series of "bread crumbs" that are only visible in the UV spectrum. I've had some success with a highlighter; the bark soaks up the ink, making it invisible to the naked eye. It's lasted a few rainy days, but I am not certain it will last for (at least) several months. I was wondering if there is another way to do this, one that is a little more weatherproof.

Invisible Fence Indoor IFA 12 transmitter...does anyone know how to repair?

I had an Invisible Fence installed in my yard. I have two small dogs that are inside most of the time. I purchased two Invisible Fence "Pet Keepers" which are 5" square transmitters that are used as a fence for inside the house. These little devices are $150 each. I have had mine for awhile but one wasn't working until the dog was right next to it. I took it into the Invisible Fence store and they told me there was only a once year warranty. I purchased another very painfully. I'm really tired of the racket they have going...selling batteries for $15 each, charging around a hundred bucks everytime the line outside is damaged and needs repair. I brought home the old one...(IFA 12 transmitter). IF told me that the antenna may have gone bad or something but they don't repair..why would they when they can sell you another for $150? Can anyone tell me how this transmitter could possibly be repaired? If so, I'll use it elsewhere in my home!?

How to release the wires where they are attached to the Invisible Fence control box?

The invisble fence wires are connected to the Invisble Fence control box through a flimsy-feeling connector that is part of the control box. That plastic connector has two openings foir the wires to be inserted with a plastic tab over each opening. I have tried pushing the tabs up, then down to relase thiose wires but have not been able to release the wires. I have played with thise tabs enough that I am concerned that I might break them. What is the secret to releasing the wires from those connectors?

How you make an invisible mouse?

Wired has an article on Pranav Mistry's invisible mouse. It costs $20 to build and looks fairly simple. It consists of an infrared camera and an infrared laser with a line cap. I assume this line cap makes the laser fan out into a thin wedge of light that skims just above your desk's surface. The camera sees your fingers as hot spots and software tracks the movement of these hot spots. Here is the original article: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/07/computer-mouse-invisible/ It should be easy to make. Who want's to try it out and upload their code for us? I would if I could program.

InVision LD 3D Printer Help

A 3D printer has been donated to my classroom for a few months, but we were not given any documentation on the printers use. I have looked online, but it is an older 3D printer and information is lacking. I thought I would see if anyone here had experience and could point me in the right direction. I have been to manufacturer's website but have had little luck since it is a legacy system. I have looked online but I cannot find a manual. If I could find a manual that would help greatly. It is an InVision LD 3D Printer, S/N 05JA1921 Thanks!

Chmistry buffs: IR invisible ink?

Hey all science-type people, I've seen invisible ink pens and things for sale that contain ink that show up in infrared, instead of ultraviolet light.  That's really appealing to me for a number of project ideas because digital cameras pick up IR exteremely well (especially with their filter removed). The problem is I think I'm going to want a lot of it, and those dumb little pens are crazily expensive. So any of you chemistry buffs out there have a secret formula I could make?  I'd prefer something invisible in regular light, but hey, whatever you've got. :) Thanks in advance for your help, -Kurt

How to make florescent ink?

I have Googled and searched Wiki on how to make fluorescent (ultraviolet) inks. I want to know how to make them. I dont want th lemon juice , corn starch, milk or other types of invisible inks. I want to make the stuff the glows under uv light. I searched using uv, ultraviolet, fluorescent inks but couldnt find anything other than the lemon juice and other types of "invisible" writing. Please help if you know where to find or if you know how to make fluorescent (ultraviolet) inks. You can email me at whitethatchpotentloins@yahoo.com I mean the inks that u can buy for handstampers and that are put in invisible ink markers. I want to make the stuff myself and not have to buy it off the internet.... So while yes there are alot of things that glow under UV, I want it in liquid form.

Where can I get full UV LEDs? Answered

I need some full ultraviolet LEDs for a project. I've found some, but they don't output light completely in th UV range. These lights also put out visible violet light; I need them to give me invisible UV light. The wavelength that they put out needs to be around 300nm-350nm. Thanks.

Indoor invisible pet fence idea - need help

I need to keep a cat out of a room that has a 12 foot wide opening. I was wondering if a strand of wire or a coil of wire could be installed under the carpet across the 12 foot opening such that when the cat, wearing a collar fitted with a magnet came close, a current change would be created in the wire or coil and an alarm could be generated that would scare the cat away? Would this work and if so, would someone like to help me make it happen? Thanks

How to convert a standard video monitor to a pulse-cross monitor?

For video diagnostics, a wave-form monitor and a pulse-cross monitor are highly useful tools. Is there a simple way to convert a standard video monitor into a pulse-cross (sometimes called a cross-pulse) monitor? I.e., feed the signal into a box and the box feeds into a standard video monitor and you can see the normally invisible image corners and invisible vertical interval of the video. I think this can be a simple electronics diagram. Thanks for any help!
