Iron Man

Hello. No one seems to have done anything in this group at all since inception. That honestly sucks, as I was hoping that someone would have put in some time and at least come out with some sketches, or put their thoughts down on paper. Well I am not one to complain without doing something about the problem. First up is the issue of powered movement. That is the core of Iron Man's super strength. You have 3 real options here. Hydraulic, Stepper Motor, or Servo Motor. I have filtered out hydraulic simply because it is not as easy to work with as the other electrical motors. I found a comparison chart, and a link to it is posted below. http://www.legacycncwoodworking.com/stepper-vs-servo-motors/ Based on the information it contained, I would say that a stepper motor is the most efficient way to go. It takes more power to run, and generates more heat, but neither of those problems is difficult to deal with. Heat syncs, and a propane/natural gas generator will solve both of those problems readily. The next problem is the exoskeleton, the armored body of Iron Man. I have looked into materials, and the difficulty in casting them, or machining them. ZA, or Zinc Aluminum alloys seem to be the way to go. They are relatively easy to make, requiring only about 900F to melt them, they cast extremely well, and they make extremely fine detailed castings. When they set up, they have hardness equivalent to that of Cast Iron. They also lend themselves readily to sand casting, mold casting, and to graphite casting. Alright, I have put my 2 cents in. Lets hear from the rest of you.

Iron Man's Repulsors

How would you build iron mans repulsors? I have some already...     You could use a transducer for particle displacement, you might be able to send an ion beam through a "tunnel" of a heavier particle, since it can't travel fast in air. I need ideas! Thanks, Laserbeamtoast.

How to make an Mark 6 reactor for mounting on a guitar?

I am trying to make my guitar look like the armor of Iron Man. I have seen lots of versions, but the Arc Reactors I have seen are all too thick to mount under the strings on a guitar. I just want to make the triangle that lights up in the center. What materials can I use to make the frame the exact size and height that I need? And what can I use for the top cover? I never made anything like this before. So any help would be appreciated. I included a pic of the guitar. I would like the reactor to cover where the middle pickup used to be. Thanks!

Iron Man 2 Kinetic Sculpture?

For those who have seen Iron Man 2: In that one scene where Tony is in an office with Pepper on the desk there's that sculpture on her desk. I did some research (A.K.A googling it) and found that it's called the Swinging Stick Sculpture. Do you think its possible to construct one out of wood? It would be so awesome :P

Fan made Iron Man suit is pretty freakin' great

Anthony Le is such a fan of Iron Man that he built his own War Machine outfit. Based on concept sketches from before Iron Man 2 hit theaters, Le's suit has a motorized faceplate that flips up and down and a spinning Gatling gun on his shoulder. It's an amazing build and took Le a month to make at a cost of $4,000. Great job! Le, a fitness consultant, studied some concept sketches of the suit posted on the Internet. He used thin, high-impact urethane for the armor, cutting it into plates and joining them with some 1,500 rivets and washers. He sculpted a clay helmet mold and then used a liquid resin mix to create the final product. But that was just cosmetic work. He also added a small servo motor that opens the faceplate, as in the movie, and built a gun out of pipes and a motor. LEDs in the eyes and chest-plate further add to the illusion. You Built What?! A Real Iron Man Suit

DIY Iron Man Costume Replica

Advanced Iron forum member TMP just completed his custom Iron Man costume just in time for the film's theatrical premiere. Incredible work! Just look at all those details!!!TMP says he spent $1500-2000 on the material compound alone, never-mind months of trial and error. Via Cool Stuff in SlashfilmIt looks a bit bulky, but it makes sense, a real metal costume would look much rougher than it does in the film (The movie's costume was made of rubber, so it could be more dynamic)It doesn't look as extreme as the film, but it certainly looks more real. Now, if only it could fly......Maybe we can expect more next year? There's quite a buzz for DIY Iron-Man costumes this year.

Swiss man soars above Alps with jet-powered wing

-BEX, Switzerland Yves Rossy, a Swiss pilot, strapped on a jet-powered wing and leaped from a plane Wednesday for the first public demonstration of the homemade device, turning figure eights and soaring high above the Alps.Article on Yahoo! Other Article in the Daily MailSo far Rossy and his sponsors, including the Swiss watch company Hublot, have poured more than $285,000 and countless hours of labor into building the device. He would not estimate how much his device would cost should it ever be brought to market. But, he believes similar jet-powered wings will one day be more widely available to experienced parachutists ready for the ultimate flying experience. That is, if they don't mind missing out on the breathtaking panorama above the Swiss Alps."I am so concentrated, I don't really enjoy the view," Rossy said. It's finally been done publicly. Man's eternal quest for flight has just gotten one step closer. Is anyone else reminded of Buzz Lightyear for some reason? No? Pepakura armor

I would really want pepakura costume(s). Like a pepakura Iron Man helmet/armor or Halo helmet/armor. Other types also would be great. Dose not have to be pretty or even finished. Not 2D but 3D form. The reason I need this is because I cant scale the pepakura files no matter what I try. Also kinda lazy to print so much paper and spend countless hours putting it together. Honestly I prefer paying. If any questions feel free to ask I will respond ASAP. Thanks for reading. Wiring for cosplay - arc reactor - soldering help?

Iron Man cosplay trouble - my soldering iron won't tin, first off. It worked fine last week. I've tried cleaning, sanding off the dirty parts, using flux... I'm stuck. Also, it's heating the solder enough to melt it, but not the wires enough for it to create any kind of connection. It's a pretty small space that I've got to wire everythig in is pretty tight. I could post pics of the set up / ideas for the actual wiring? I've got 6 white LEDs and 2 3v batteries for power.

Anyone can tell me what's the smallest acutator/(stepper-)motor for angle of about ~45° ?

Was just a fixed idea and i'm not really into electronics yet, but i wondered, if it was possible to make bigger panels with tiny motors that move metal stripes/chips to form shifting shapes. Maybe just think of iron man's self-mounting armor or fish swarms for example, but in a smaller way, say as tiny as possible, but affordable (hehe).

What props/armor are a must-make in the DIY world?

I'm currently looking towards making something like weapons, armors, etc., specifically those with origins from movies, cartoons, video games, etc. Other than the ones everyone does such as Halo, Iron Man, knight armor, etc. what other armor, weapons, or accessories are a must-make or just plain awesome? Think along the lines of something like the Batman gauntlet, except from movies (or something) that are old but still remembered and cool. Also thinking of a long term project of a chiken-walker mech costume, exoskeleton costume (NOT Iron Man), or AT-RT. What do you think?

Small self-contained energy source

Hello,            I am interested in making a energy source similar to iron man's arc reactor in the fact that it is small, self contained, and and powerful. I would like it to be hand-held, but I can deal with slightly larger or even desk size. It needs to be long lasting. I am well aware that an arc reactor is fictional, but I just need something that may be similar. It can be a large project (I have time) but needs to be not super expencive. Around $500 is the max I can go for!  I hope someone can help, 13islucky

Does anybody know a good place to find 100ohm 20mA surface mount resistors? Answered

Does anybody know a good place to find 100ohm 20mA surface mount resistors?  I am trying to make a replica arc reactor from Iron Man and found a great instructable.  I have my LEDs ordered but all the places I have looked are out of the 100ohm 20mw resistors.  I am soldering the LEDs in parallel with a 3volt battery and I have 12LEDs.  I ordered the NTE30027 LEDs from mouser.com.  Does anybody know of a good substitute instead of a 100ohm resistor.  The max current for the resistor is 20mA so I can't change the current going through it but I know it is possible to change the ohms. Double vision?

Something a little wierd happened when I took a peep at the contest, some entries had decided to replicate themselves.... I don't know if this is simply an aesthetic problem or a serious issue but it seemed best to be on the safe side... It could also have something to do with some of the new stuff... The disconcerting thing is that the iron man one's aren't beside eachother...
