Clock in a jar

Here's a cool concept made by Oren Hetzroni. It's a clock in a jar where the hands move around the inside of the glass. Reading it is a little tricky, but if you match up the big and little hands with the numbers you can figure it out. Remaking this one is super easy. Just put the movement inside the lid and bend the hands at a right angle so they move around the side. jar via core77

sauerkraut jar

I've seen jars for sale to make sauerkraut in b ut they are quite expensive (for little ol' fast food worker me, anyway). All they really look like are canning jars with a water or air lock of some kind stuck in the lid. anyone have any ideas of how i could make it myself? i need something like this instead of the traditional crock because of the odor. ~~Anna aka Thursday Next

Firefly Lights Jar

So while browsing Instructables, most times I see quite a few Instructables for the sun jars.  While on Think Geek today, I saw the Firefly Dreamlights Jar.  I was just wondering if someone wanted to take a crack at making it so that I can make one myself (im not that great with figuring out circuits on my own). Thanks!

Importing JARs in Eclipse

I am trying to import a .jar into an Eclipse Java project for use with the import command. Once again, me and my problem-solving-skill derived self can't seem to figure out how to do it. I've done it before, but i just forgot.UPDATE:What feels like 2 seconds after posting this, I discovered I just had a Referenced Archive to the Build Path. I do really weird things sometimes.

Looking For A Bell Jar

Hello, I am a high school student from Boston, MA looking for a bell jar and corresponding stand/vacuum connection to conduct my experiments. I'm not looking for anything in particular, so long as it's not plastic (it will need to withstand some moderate electron bombardment). If you have anything, even if it's only something you can only lend to me, I am interested! Thanks! Xellers

Jar of Fireflies remake?

Hey, I was just curious, I made a version of Keso's Jar of Fireflies a while back using all through-hole components. Do you think it would be worth it to basically copy/paste his instructable, but give a part list and a few notes on the few changes that needed to be made?

Help with Leyden Jar Answered

I have seen many of the instructables about building a leyden jar, but I built two and I cannot seem to make either of them work. First I made the glass one. I filled it with salt water and stuck a long nail in through the lid because I couldn't fit my hand in to wrap it with aluminum foil on the inside. I sealed it well with hot glue and taped a very neat, crinkle-less strip of aluminum tape around it, the kind that is used for repairing air ducts. I tried charging it by rubbing around a fuzzy blanket on the carpet. That always produces a big spark, so while my brothers were rubbing their hair on the blanket and carpet, I was holding the metal tape around the glass jar with one hand and touching the grounded screw on the electrical plate with the other hand. When my brothers touched the nail on the top, we both felt a shock but when I tried to discharge it by touching my fingers to the nail and the tape at the same time, nothing happened. I don't think it is holding a charge at all. Next I didn't touch the metal tape at all, and we rubbed our hair on the blanket and touched the nail. But when I tried to discharge it, the same thing: no spark. So I assumed the glass was too thick, so I made the plastic one. This is made out of a Tang powdered drink mix container, I cleaned it, filled it with salt water, and wrapped the inside and outside with aluminum foil, as tightly on the sides as I could. I used a smaller nail this time, but I attached it to the inside aluminum foil with a thin strip of foil. I sealed the nail up and made sure there were no leaks. I performed all of the same tests as last time, but still no results. Can someone please help me figure out where i am going wrong? Thanks :)

What should I expect to see from my Leydens jar? Answered

My son has built 3 different Leyden's jars for a science fair. None seem to spark. The foil is very smooth( it looks like it was painted on) There are no holes. I've tried different chains. I've tried glass jars, as well as plastic. We are trying to charge to jar by rubbing a balloon on our heads and touching the metal ball on top. We hear a "pop" but never see a spark. We've continued this up to 100 times, and still no spark from the wire which touches the outside foil, and points to the metal ball on the lid. I'm definately no scientist! Do you have any ideas? I've tried holding the jar while charging it, as well as sitting it down, and I still get no results. The closest thing I've gotten was the balloon appeared to act like a magnet; it pulled the plastic jar closer when the balloon had static on it. Thank You, Jodie

Help with a sun jar idea? Answered

So recently I saw the 'ible on here about how to make a sun jar, which I think is really awesome, and I want to make one now... The question I have though, is if anybody knows how to make a circuit, without programming that will make the light raise and lower in intensity, so basically, it has a very slow pulsate but it never turns off and doesn't go super dark either... I have been trying to address this problem myself for some time, but haven't come up with a clever solution yet. --Thanks!!

Wanted: Jar O' Fireflies

Alright, so me and a friend went to the salvage yard this weekend and came up with mostly bubkis as far as awesome. EXCEPT for a really fun salt/pepper shaker set that looks like cowboy boots, and this nifty shaped light bulb (i'll get pics). it's freakin massive, it's at least a foot long and something like 6-7 inches across and has a really interesting shape. for $2 i couldn't really pass it up. while thinking up things to do with it i remembered the fireflies in a jar ible ( one of the many). now, i SUCK at electronics and i REALLY suck at soldering so there's almost no chance of me being able to make one of these. any chance someone would be willing to make me one (or if anyone has links to a place where i can by the sucker premade) i'd gladly pay for one.

Question by BANANI    |  last reply

what does the ball and magnet at the top of most leydon jars do?

I have my own leydon are and it isn't very big but I make huge shocks by charging it will my wool blanket. I tested ways to make it stronger and used a spring coiled which made it absorb more electricity and allowed me to shock people with a steady current without them touching the positive. I head something about the ball and magnet and I wanted to know what it is all about and how it makes it stronger or if it makes it collect static better or what plz answer.

Fungus, where do you get the patches for the cookie jar?

You host these Cookie Jar events that are much loved by the community, partaking a few times myself. I just have to know though, where do the patches come from? I know the number you give out far exceeds the 45 you get free for going PRO, so do you buy extra just for us? Special rules for that sort of thing?

Can't find Instrucable: LED in a jar with a feather hanging, firefly effect from wind

OK, I'm trying to search for an Instructable but I can't find it anywhere! I thought I had favorited it, but I guess not. Here's the description: A simple circuit made from a watch battery and and LED. One of the leads is a srping, with a feather hanging from it,. so when the wind blows, it moves the spring, connects the circuit, and the LED glows, like a firefly. Throw the whole thing in a jar and hang it in a tree, tada! I'm pretty sure it was featured within the last month or so, as I found it through an RSS feed. Any help? Thanks so much!

How do I repaint appliqued lettering on old glass Tom's cracker jar?

Idea for extended version of "Sun Jar"

After seeing the recent Sun Jar I'ble, I had an idea (not even concrete enought to be a Completable) for an interestingly extended version. There now exist LEDs for infrared, visible red, green, and blue, and near UV.It should be possible, with a mix of small low-voltage constant-current power supplies and pulse modulators, to construct a multiple-LED light source which roughly models what we perceive as the solar "spectrum." I don't mean formally reproducing the raw wavelength distribution, but rather the combination of intensities we see (or measure with a thermometer) in a prism- or grating-spread spectral display.Coupling such a circuit to a solar cell would allow you to build a "Sun Jar" which "collects sunlight" during the day and "releases sunlight" at night. As I said, just an idea...

Where to find/make/buy widemouth black Ball jar lids?

I'm in need of at least 50-120 black widemouth Ball jar lids.  I can't find these items anywhere for a reasonable price. I already have the jars but the lids are gold and come in two pieces.  Can anyone assist me in finding black widemouth lids or tell me how to make them so the paint will not chip off when re-opening the jar? I'm from Muncie, IN where the Ball Brothers made their money with the ball jar and need these for a local company making lotion.  We would like to package the lotion in the jars. Thanks, Sara
