Steveastro's magical workshop of many wonderful toys has a very nice Jones-Shipman model 311 tool and cutter grinder, the trouble is however, that we don't have a clue as to how to set it up and use it. Our master machinist says working these things is an art and that its a full 5 year apprenticeship on cutter grinding ALONE. We have a box full of essentially shredded endmills waiting to be sharpened and since we have the tool to do it, it would be quite worthwhile if we could acquire a bit of help getting it up and running.

So, some people like wearing and/or collecting hats. Show us your headgear! Here are my favorite hats. The first is an Indiana Jones fedora, the second a NZ made oilskin, and the last is a circa 1989 Soviet Air Force officer's hat. I'm in the market for a leather pilot cap...

Today is Children in Need day in the UK. Non-uniform day at school (I went dressed as Indiana Jones), and fun activities in the afternoon.I got my Van der Graff generator out for a play, and found kids queuing up so that they could pay to be hit with thousands of volts. They knew it hurt, but they still queued. Some came back for more.Kids, eh?(Oh, and I let off a Party Popper behind the Head of Year 8 whilst he was trying to do a cool and suave impression of James Bond. That was funny!)

I am always looking into ways to improve or upgrade my "Movie Quality" Darth Vader costume. The only thing that I am really lacking is a voice changer. I do not want one that makes me sound like a robot I want one that will make me sound as much as Darth Vader as possible. I know it was James Earl Jones' voice but to make my voice sound deeper and metalic would top off my costume very well. If anyone can help I would be grateful!!

Received the Instructables newsletter today, Feb 21 2013, and immediately recognized one of the 'ibles to be from a blog I frequent. The Instructable is called "Wall of Paper Hearts": https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-wall-of-paper-hearts/ It's written by "okrolomi" and it's ripped off wholesale, pictures and all, from Jessica Jones of How About Orange: http://howaboutorange.blogspot.com/2013/01/wall-of-paper-hearts.html The guy didn't even bother to make his own version, just took it, words, pictures, and all, from somewhere else. And it even got featured in the newsletter. How, and to whom do I report this? Can his post be taken down?

Les Paul died today, August 13th. The legendary guitarist reached 94 years old before he passed away from respiratory faliure. The guitar, the best gibson guitar and the one that made the rock and roll sound all possible is his namesake, and yet he doesn't get nearly as much media coverage as Michael Jackson. Why? Michael Jackson didn't write most of his material, and Les Paul has revolutionised modern music as it is today. Quincy Jones made it all possible for the singer, and the one with talent who is much older and more talented barely gets a mention on the morning radio. Here, I pay homage to a fellow guitarist, and inspiration.R.I.P Les Paul! =(

Has anyone ever experienced the fourth dimension. Sure this is a topic for science fiction novels, new age conspiracy theories and the new Indiana Jones movie. But dimensions past our own experience are having a big impact in theoretical physics. Flat Land and it's unofficial sequel Flatterland are good books to get a mathematical yet whimsical look into alternative dimensions. The Tesseract from A Wrinkle in Time was a hyper cube as well.So we go from 0D (a point) to 1D (a line) to 2D (planes) to 3D (solid objects) and then what happens when you pull that plane into an unseen dimension? Well, use your imagination and watch this video: 6d-Hypercube from Tobby Lang on Vimeo. Why Bother With 4D?Yours_BG*(Corrected, thanks n8mansays)

I'm building a bike light around a Seoul P4 LED and some re-purposed 18650 li-ion cells from a laptop battery. I'll need 700mA constant current and can comfortably fit 8 cells in my enclosure. I've done some reading and I should be able to build a Buck converter relatively easily, but I'm struggling to find any good guides to help me spec the components. I asked on Dave Jones's EEVBlog forums and all the replies recommended either Linear Regulators (wasteful) or something designed using Webbench, which only helps with circuits featuring ICs. As a buck should in theory only need a transistor, a diode, an incuctor and a capacitor I want to build it myself out of through-hole components. Can anyone help with some guides or tutorials on specifying these components please? My degree was Computer Science and I was definitely better at set theory and boolean algebra than anything involving formulae!

This came up in another forum, but I heard the report too.... So today, there was a broadcast on NPR (yes, I admit that I listen to NPR :p) about a $100 per barrel crisis.... If you didn't know, a barrel of crude goes for about $93. Personally, I don't think it will cause a crisis - it's not as if it's going from $30 to $100 in a week. However, seriously, are the masses comatose? It's not like no one has been warning them of this - and the consequences nowhere near sustainable living. Arrrrr.... I've been saying it for awhile - if we don't regulate ourselves, nature is going to take the kind liberty of doing that for us (and that won't be pretty). Soylent Green anyone? I mean, I recently read that the average American will consume about 500,000 gallons of water per year... whereas some of the Nordic countries, consumption is around 17,500 gallons per person... By the way, the US has a very limited water store supply :/ US has 5% of world population... 25% of world total CO2 emissions. China, for example, has 22% of the world population - but only 15% of the world's CO2 emissions.... US has 5% of the world population - and 29% world CO2 emissions from fossil fuels. (china 14.5) What percentage of companies are considered sustainable (by Dow Jones sustainability index) in the US? A measly, 19.8% (UK: 68%).

ODDBALL birds are surprising British experts by using smouldering cigarette to kill parasites on their wings. The rooks are swooping on to the tracks at a Devon railway station and placing their wings over the smoke to fumigate them.Commuter Jeff Jones said told Britain's The Telegraph: "I noticed the rooks because they are not usually found in towns. They were generally flapping about when a chap flicked a cigarette butt on to the track."It was still all right and one of the rooks swooped down and picked up the butt with its beak. It then flew around and landed on the platform, dancing around with this smoking cigarette in its beak."It looked quite comical. But then it dropped the butt on the platform and pulled its wings over it, collecting the smoke. It seemed as if it were using the smoke to rid itself of perhaps ants or something similar."Five minutes later another rook, or perhaps the same one, swooped in when another cigarette was flicked away and repeated the whole thing."Royal Society for the Protection of Birds spokesman Richard Archer said the birds must have learned cigarettes can be used to kill parasites."You have to be careful attributing behaviour but it would seem fumigation is the most likely conclusion. Rooks are very intelligent," he said. It's crow week on Instructables! Post as many forum topics about crows as you can! Main image from [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rook_(bird) Wikipedia].

Hello, Newbie here! I was hoping to convert my manual wheelchair into an electric powered one.. What would be the best way to go about this? Could I just install hub motor on the real wheels? Or would a gear motor be better? I was planning to control it using arduino as I would eventually want to make it gaze-controlled (working on the eye tracking code at the moment..if anyone has any advice for that to that would be great!) It is a really important project following an ALS diagnosis and it would mean everything if I could make this work somehow..I am not based in the EU but have family in the UK who could send me over the parts if they don't deliver. I know it can be cheap to just buy a second hand powered wheelchair but where I am it is not so easy to come across and eventually I would have to adapt it to anyway..I also thought it could be a fun project for me to work on as I was an engineering student. Also is arduino the best way to control it, I am using the viola-jones eye tracking algorithm in matlab.. Thanks for any help! Also if you cant help directly even links to pages that can help would be useful :)))

Reproduced verbatim from The Fortean Times issue 249, republishing from FT35JUNE 1979On the 15th a demonstration of a "revolutionary" energy device took place at an undisclosed location in the UK. Iowerth Thomas, 58 a Welsh inventor, hoped to interest both government energy officials and an Arab consortium. Mr Thomas had been experimenting since 1936 with ways to make petrol engines burn more efficiently. His "bolt-on" device promised between 25 and 40 per cent efficiency using "the electrolysis of tap water", plus a cleaner exhaust. The government scientists' response - that it was impossible - spurred Mr Thomas to demonstrate it for them. He reported to the motoring correspondent of the Daily Telegraph that his stationary engine ran for 112 seconds with his device and for 77 seconds on the same amount of petrol without it. The usual objection to electrolytic systems is that the energy needed to run them is greater than that produced. With some sarcasm, New Scientist sniffed that the device needed to be much smaller than the room-size contraption Jones used. What really stoked their scorn was Thomas's reply when asked how it worked: "It's beyond me," he said. That was the last we heard of him and his promising device. How has this technology improved in the last 30 years?L

Here's a story with a great moral to it. If you're observant, then you can come up with a brilliant solution to a problem. And it doesn't matter if you went to a fancy design school for it or just need to solve a problem. Canadian pig farmer Mary Haugh had a problem; multiple heart attacks put her husband out of commission, and she alone had to somehow control and herd their 3,000 hogs through the barn. Traditional methods of getting pigs to move are to use a stick, an electric prod or a "chase board," a length of wood the farmer wields horizontally to angle the pigs in a particular direction.Haugh then came up with a roller that dispenses a swath of red cloth--a sort of farm version of the retractable "lane guides" that movie theaters use. Working with her brother Peter Jones, a mechanical engineer, she developed a 30-pound stainless steel prototype that retracted fabric like a windowshade and could unspool 50 feet of material. The pair also designed it so one end could attach to existing stabling, enabling one-person operation. The resulting product rolls up neatly, can easily be carried and deployed by one person, and meets Canadian standards for biosecurity as it can be washed with the pressure washers most farmers already own to clean other equipment. More importantly, it works far better than anything that came before it--testing trials reveal it saves 70% of the time needed to herd hogs, which translates to hours per week. link

Extreme Art to save one of the best forest parks (Cabral’s forest park), in the city of Vigo, in Galicia -Spain-: Rock music video "A" (BEN SENMEDO). We made it also with free software (Kdenlive - Manjaro, end format WebM, audio Ogg) and the song is in Gallego, a language that we speak in the NorthWest of Spain. Actually, the place chosen to make the videoclip, known as "Monte de Cabral" or "Cotogrande", has serious risks of being destroyed, because of the complicity of the mayor of the city, Abel Caballero, with the Britsh corporation Eurofund. The mayor and the corporation want to convert the forest park into a commercial macroproject that they try to call "Porto Cabral". With this video, we hope anyone can enjoy the forest park forever: Letter of "A" in English: In this black horse I'm going to walk between the rain, they fall disks and seas cry out victory. I listen to the ripple of the good souls still death, for me it will never be late, when the fight will be good. I rush forth at the bad management of the power, I leave the jewels, I choose only the pieces of chess. One night, any day, waiting. One night, any day, waiting. People are not silly sheeps, we mount horses, we take the bridles. The souls without fear ever win the larvas, I don't tremble with idiots, you will never see flights. I'll add to this as errors come to my attention. Perhaps this, or someone else's similar post, could be made a sticky - an always available point of consultation distinct from individual requests for, or offers of, help. I have a 2:1 Honours degree in Librarianship and Information Studies, and I also have a City and Guilds Certificate in teaching Adult Literacy. English is my native language. ------------ THERE, THEIR, THEY'RE THERE: Position: "The school is over there."; "There is the temple we have been looking for." Information: "There is a stray dog wandering around the house."; "There is a train leaving in 15 minutes." Slang: "He's not all there." (He is a bit stupid.) THEIR: Exclusively belonging to someone or something - no other meaning. "The coats are theirs." (the coats belong to them); "This is their car." (the car belongs to them); "Fords are OK, but their brakes can be spongy." (the brakes belonging to Ford cars can be spongy). THEY'RE: Short for "They are..." "Try some, they're very tasty."; "Surely they're not ending the gig without playing "Us and Them"?" A spellchecker may not locate words that are spelled correctly but used incorrectly. "My car is over their." is wrong usage, but the word, "their" is spelled correctly. A grammar checker may or may not locate such errors. (Microsoft Word 2007 combines spellcheck and grammar check, and does find such errors, offering the correct "there" as a replacement. -------------------- ITS, IT'S: ITS: Belonging to. "The pedal on the left is its clutch pedal." (the left pedal is the clutch belonging to the car - "its" = "the car's"); "Its mechanism is a bit fiddly, and poorly designed." (the mechanism belonging to something not explicitly mentioned is fiddly and poorly designed). IT'S: Short for "it is". "It's raining."; "It's cold."; "It's quite warm for November." -------------------- YOUR, YOU'RE YOUR: Ownership. "That is your car."; "Your instructions are misleading."; "What was your day like?" YOU'RE: Short for "you are". "You're wrong about that, it's the other way around."; "You're pulling my leg, that's not even remotely possible." -------------------- THAN, THEN THAN: Comparative. "My car is better than yours."; "I feel better than I did yesterday."; "I would sooner be there than sitting here doing nothing." THEN: Sequence; "Add an egg, then whisk until fluffy."; "Go to the corner, then turn right." Also colloquially, "Then again, I might decide to fly, after all."; "What's all this about, then?" Usual error is "then" instead of "than". I've never seen it the other around. Becoming more common, and it has appeared as the only error in a good few Instructables. -------------------- SHOULD OF, COULD OF, WOULD OF, etc. All simply wrong. They do not exist in English, and are misheard shortenings of "should have" (should've (sounds like "should of")), "could have" (could've), "would have" (would've), etc. -------------------- TO, TOO, TOO TO: "It's time to go to school."; "Let's go to the cinema."; Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go." TOO Also\as well. "I'm coming, too."; "I, too, use Linux Mint." TOO Excessive. "That's far too much for me!", "You go, if you like, but I think it's too expensive to get in." -------------------- THE APOSTROPHE The apostrophe does a few unconnected things. Indicates ownership: "The dog's bowl." (The bowl belonging to the dog.); "That pink collar is the cat's." (That pink collar belongs to the cat.); "Microsoft's Windows 7 is the best Operating System." (The Operating System belonging to Microsoft.) Indicates missing letters: "They're" (They are); "Can't" (cannot); "I'bles" (Instructables). To indicate ownership of a plural that ends in "s", or pronoun (name) just add the apostrophe at the end without any additional "s": "The ship's (a single ship) colours have been changed to red and grey." "The ships' (all the ships in the fleet) colours have been changed to red and grey." (Else you would get "ships's"; which Golem might say.) "Mr Jones' car is a Skoda." Not Jones's, although, it seems, it's a matter of preference. My preference is brevity. BUT an apostrophe NEVER EVER makes a plural, "banana's" is wrong, it's just "bananas"; "goat's" is wrong, it's just "goats". Used this way it could indicate ownership, "The banana's skin is yellow." (The skin belonging to the banana.) Detailed examination at; http://www.eng-lang.co.uk/apostrophe_rules.htm -------------------- DIFFERENT. You will often see "different" used with "than", or "from", or "to". The preference is "from", because one says "it differs from", not "it differs than", or "it differs to". Detailed discussion at; http://grammarist.com/usage/different/ -------------------- "REPLACED WITH", or "REPLACED BY". Both can be correct. See MilkyBarKid's post in a thread at; http://forum.wordreference.com/threads/replaced-with-or-replaced-by.1985166/ -------------------- MISLED, MISLEAD Both are correct, but have different uses. "He was misled by the sneaky salesman." "The sneaky salesman tried to mislead him." -------------------- LESS, FEWER Fewer is used when individual things or people are being referred to; cars, telephones, knives, people, churches. Less is used when things being referred to cannot be counted or don't have plurals; traffic, communication, cutlery, worship. Fewer cars mean less traffic. -------------------- If you have any particular points or questions, I'll be glad to research and post.

The Pi Day Pie Contest is open until March 31st. Share a pie recipe to win a stand mixer. There's even a special judge's prize for the best pi-themed decoration. This year's Pi Day is special, because it's Pi Day ALL MONTH LONG. The third month of the fourteenth year (3/14) lasts for the duration of March, and it won't happen again for another hundred years. So get baking! Some miscellaneous Pi facts: (1) Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. Pie is a baked dish made of sweet or savory filling wrapped in pastry dough. They are often, but not always, circular. Expressed in terms of pie, π is the ratio of the diameter of the pan to the length of the crust. (2) Pi didn’t always have a name, much less a sweet Greek letter of its own. Contemporary use of the π symbol is thanks to mathematician William Jones, who in 1706 proposed using the letter p to indicate perimeter. Leonhard Euler, the same guy who brought you functional notation in the form of f(x), popularized π by including it in his work around 1737. Euler is responsible for many of the letters that bedevil beginning algebra students: i for the square root of -1, e for the base of the natural logarithm, and much of the notation for trigonometric functions. There is a Wikipedia page devoted to the list of things named after him, and it is enough to make an English major blanche in terror. (3) Pi Day is officially a thing, at least in the United States. In 2009, House Resolution 224 officially recognized Pi Day as a holiday on March 14th. Presumably as a kick in the pants for the education system, not as a literal example of political pork. Resolved, That the House of Representatives-- (1) supports the designation of a `Pi Day' and its celebration around the world; (2) recognizes the continuing importance of National Science Foundation's math and science education programs; and (3) encourages schools and educators to observe the day with appropriate activities that teach students about Pi and engage them about the study of mathematics. (4) Pi is vaguely described in 1 Kings 7:23-26 in the King James version of the Bible. Solomon's pool should probably have been 31.4 cubits around, but he deserves some credit for getting pretty dang close. (5) Pie Day is on January 23rd, according to the American Pie Council, but they're still cool with celebrating Pi Day with pies.

Geneticist Professor Steve Jones has said that human evolution may be over, and that we may now, as a species, be on the slippery slope to extinction. He's not saying evolution in general has stopped, just ours. His theory is that our development and exploitation of technology has de-coupled human development from natural selection. Conditions which would have meant an early grave for our ancestors, through starvation or other side-effects, are now barely considered as inconvenient, let alone life-threatening.Personally, suffering asthma and 8 dioptres of short-sight, I would have quickly starved to death in our hunter-gatherer days, unable to keep up with prey animals or to see well enough to tell "nutritious" from "poisonous".What this means is that we have a rate of survival to age 21 that is almost 100%, double what it was in ancient times. At the same time, our supporting technologies, particularly in medicine, mean that there is a growing accumulation of deleterious genetic conditions in the general gene pool.Increases in world travel have also meant that the differences between different human populations, already low, are getting smaller, as openness and acceptance of other cultures has started to homogenise our phenotype. The result - we are isolated from natural evolutionary pressures, so there is nothing to stimulate natural selection, nothing to weed out potentially-dangerous mutations. We are stagnating. So, what next?On the one hand, the pessimistic view is that, at some point, our genome will become so laden with hazardous mutations that we will cease to be viable as a species. We will be unable to reproduce successfully. On the other hand, maybe other species, still closely linked with natural selection, will continue to evolve until they supplant us. The obvious choices are chimps and gorillas - if we don't drive them to extinction.Or maybe our heirs are currently underwater - dolphins, maybe? Or maybe they won't be mammals - octopus and squid are highly intelligent. Heck, even slime moulds have been shown to be capable of solving mazes! On the gripping hand, maybe we've out-evolved evolution? The optimist in me hopes that technology will out-pace the fuse on the genetic timebombs we have become. Maybe medicine will be able to edit our DNA, or write it afresh, truly triumphing over nature?Article stimulated by this BBC blog entry.Other linked news items.
