Contests for Kids?

Ok, why shouldn't there be a contest, for kids 0-16 year olds... this is because many contests contains electric things like circuit boards and programming where many kids like me cannot understand at all! Also, why couldn't kids enter most contests, such as the back to school contest. This is why I believe there should be contests or challenges that  kids can enter.  Comment below if you have any suggestions or disagreements.

Pallets for Kids

I have a whole bunch of kids - roughly 11yo - doing an upcycling project. We'll be in a workshop but obviously don't want them using too much that could hurt them (and get me sued). I have two hours. Ideas for simple but not rubbish pallet (or pallet wood) ideas?

Kids and Tobacco? Answered

How do I deal with teens that want to try tobacco? I don't want them addicted, but I don't want to inspire disobedience and rebellion. It's not a moral issue with me, but it is an health issue. Ocassional tobacco use doesn't bother me at all, but addiction is unhealthy. So what to do... Forbid them? Let them try it? Yell at them? Ignore it?

Kids Robotics

I want to work with my daughter to build a fun robot but it seems like there are some many choices out there for platforms, controllers, software etc. I think I'm leaning towards a platform from DFrobot. http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=product/product&path;=37_111&product;_id=97#.VaL4sZNVhBc And an Arduino based controller like this, http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=product/product&path;=35_104&product;_id=1176#.VaL45pNVhBc To control and make it move I'm thinking that Ardublock could be a good choice. http://blog.ardublock.com/ I'm curious if this community has any thoughts on my choices... or alternative ideas. Thanks, Phil

The Kids Are Alright

Via The Sietch BlogIf I asked you if giving up your car and plane travel (permanently) was a sensible solution to global warming, most people of adult age (lets say 20+) would have a hard time doing that. However the next generation, the ones who are really going to be screwed by the ill effects of the global climate crisis see things a little differently."new generation of green teenagers are prepared to support radical measures to help the planet, says a new study.A survey of 16- to 19-year-olds by the Future Foundation found more than one in eight (13%) supported a ban on travelling by air for leisure purposes, while one in 10 say they would back a ban on cars if global warming continues to worsen.Almost 10% even say they would be prepared to take part in guerrilla activities carried out by environmental groups.Meanwhile others - primarily girls - are so eco-conscious they have developed a whole new strand of teen insecurity: "green angst", defined as anxiety about one's eco credentials. Others said environmental awareness even influences their choice of friends and partners. The report was conducted on behalf of the National Lottery to inform funding of environmental projects."It might sound like these kids have lost their minds, supporting guerrilla organizations?! But when you consider the kind of world they are going to inherit it makes perfect sense. If you knew that your parents generation was going to leave you a doomed world, you might be a little pissed. No one wants to grow up to inhabit a mad max movie.According to the study released today by The National Lottery (UK organization), half of 16-19 year olds (50 per cent) want plastic bags banned completely, 71 per cent think that unnecessary packaging on food should go, and 13% per cent want a ban on traveling by plane for leisure purposes. While a quarter (24 per cent) think there should be increases on the taxes and tolls affecting cars, one in ten is prepared to go even further and would support a complete ban on cars if global warming continues to get worse.Read more here.

Read with your Kids

Hey this is Brett. I have something that's extremely important for you to know. You need to READ with your KIDS! You need to do it regularly! You need to do it at the same time each day! It's been proven that kids who are read to by a parent can read better, earlier! In this day and age far too many kids are dropped off at a daycare and plopped in front of a TV set. I remember the good old days, growing up on the farm. As a four year old I remember settling down with Mom in front of our wood-burning stove. I would stare at the dancing flames as Mom would read "Dick and Jane" to me. The older children would do something constructive like a jigsaw puzzle or draw pictures at the kitchen table. Dad would sit off to one side of the room and carve us some small animal figures out of walnut. Thinking back to those days really brings back those feelings of warmth and security. It tears my heart out to think about my grandchildren and what they might have to look back on. Instead of the glow of a cheery fire and the safety of Mom's lap. They might look back and only remember the cold glow of the computer screen and the uncaring embrace of a beanbag chair. Once again, Please. Please read to your children. This really works! Books on tape just don't cut it. I read to my own children every night from the books they picked out. They've grown up now and are starting their own families. I hope that they'll think back to their nights with Dad and pass on this tradition of reading to their kids. Thanks, Brett.

Distant projects with the kids

Hey everyone. So I'm back on the road for work and hundreds of miles from my amazing wife and awesome minions. It's hard traveling for work and being the husband and father the family expects you to be. So my wife came down to visit for the weekend and I got to thinking. My daughter loves building things and doing electrical projects. So I took the wife to the local hardware store and sent her home with parts and pieces. This week my daughter and I will be building a lamp for her nightstand. I bought her a 1/2" NPT flange, a 10" 1/2" galvanized pipe, a 1/2" coupling, a 1/2" to 1/8" adapter, a 1/8" nipple, an 8' lamp cord, and a lamp socket with a turn key switch. She put it together tonight to get an idea of how it will go together. She's super excited and happy to be doing a project with dad albeit over facetime. It should turn out pretty good. Guess why I'm posting is I just need some community. The hotel room gets lonely and there isn't much to do unless I'm working. So I'd like to strike up some conversations and just learn some new stuff. Thanks for the support and the great uploads. You're all a huge inspiration. Thank you.

how to stop a bully (11 - 12 year old? Answered

Hi this is kaden and i have a problem with getting bullied at school below is an email that i sent  to my school counselor This is in place of spending my day talking to you be because i would rather type it than talk or write it so here it goes. last year carter moved to oak lawn from wakanda and he keep saying things to me like kadens a big baby kadens a big baby or kadens stupid and stuff like that. i would try to tell teachers this but they wouldn't listen or if they did listen they did nothing but give me lunch detention and a major. i am not going to lie but obviously i responded to all of this in not the best way i could of but he just kept following me around and making faces calling  me names  and it got on my nerves. but that was last year but this year he has resorted to physical violence such as use my head as a personal whack-a-mo game or my body as target practice with sticks and stones but also mentally such as lying to the teachers or following me around making faces at me and stuff like that. the worst part i can't defend myself against lunchboxes because then i am the one who gets in trouble but if i let him just hit me and hurt me then neither of us gets in trouble which me and my parents think is just wrong. this next section is just other things that bother me this year… Lucas well he has a history of calling me names too like toothpick and weakling and the thing that sticks out about him was at the end of last year we made tape sculptures and he STOLE my scissors he BROKE my scissors and then he turned my scissors and a glass bottle in to a LETHAL WEAPON and chased me with it and the worst part the teachers did NOTHING he could'would've killed me if he wanted to. but then this year i walk in the bathroom at lunch he calls me weird annoying pushes me against the wall all before i even have the chance to walk away. that fixed my problem for the most part then a moth later it all started again and now a week ago i had a boy with down syndrome kiss me but that's was fixed. then that morning lucas came in my homeroom and called me those names and there were two teachers standing there that did nothing then i was having a bad day after that because i had a sub in lang arts (when theirs a sub its chaos) then i found out that carter started having science the period before me so he was always the last one out and he would always call me names or stomp on my foot (I recently found out that in elementary carter was biting my best friend on the leg) then i had lunch whop hew but then there's Jenny (jenny is a lying girl that thinks shes better than everyone else) and so i told her that library was closed for the day (they had a meeting so kids couldn't use the computers) and then she took out an arrow head and had it in the palm of her hand then she took her thumb and pointer finger and squeezed the side of my neck with the arrow head in hand and she left major marks that went away by the time the teacher saw them the next day but since my neck and face were all red (not from blood) and in tears every one kept asking me whats wrong (funny how the people that always ignore you seem all sympathetic for you if your hurt) so i just pointed to my neck and they just said oh wow then two periods later in band another girl did the same thing as jenny minus the arrow head  now that i have gotten that off my chest hears some more info about this situation i have talked to the school counselor whatever he does it only worked on one kid chance (he is to minor for this story) every body else i don't think he does any thing about principle all he does is listen and and nothing else i have talked to my parents and they email the teachers so no outcome any help and please no troll answers thanks, Kaden

Honey, I Shrunk The Kids

So my office goes –ALL OUT- for Halloween. Everyone dresses up, each team chooses a theme, and decorates as if they’re filming a blockbuster movie. There are prizes, sure, but everyone just wants bragging rights for a year. In the 3 years I’ve worked here, my team has won 2 out of 3, and I’ve won best costume at least once (had to throw that out there; bragging rights, ya know). Anyway, this year my team and I really want to do Honey, I Shrunk The Kids theme with a huge ant, huge grass, etc. But I am unable to find any instructions or similar projects online to help with ANY of these things. I am needing: instructions and/or ideas. Get creative for a moment and give me some ideas that we can use to turn our gray, cubicled area into a HISTK set. Thanks in advance!

Keith-Kid's version of: The Hitchhikers guide to.. The Earth!

I just read this forum topic, and wondered why it didn't go anywhere.I read all the negative and positive comments on it. I still think it is a great idea and a great way to get the community to work together even more.Quote from the original post: So here's the idea.I've been thinking how cool it would be to do a collaboration and create a giant travel guide. But not just an ordinary travel guide, one written by all instructables members. We have enough people on this site that we could get a pretty good start on it. I think the idea would spread fairly quickly. For example, I would write a brief something or other about my state (North Carolina), and then a full length guide for Boone, the university town that I live in. I would include basic information like population, size, etc., and also where I like to eat, what kind of tourist attractions are here, why ASU beat Michigan, etc. Some one else could add to what I wrote, and someone else could add a guide for the Charlotte/Denver area, and so on. For another state/province someone would just add a new step, etc.I realize it wouldn't be an Instructable, in the strict sense, but it would be helpful nonetheless. Not to mention we could have a lot of fun with it.What do you all think? What do the Instructables staff think about something like this? (In light of the fact that this is not a step by step guide to any one thing)Let the discussion begin. =)i know a lot of people would argue that this is a DIY site, not a travel site. And I know there are tons of other sites like this. But here are a few of my points about why this would be a good idea:Great way to get the community even more unitedAlthough wiki...whatever it was is great, anyone can edit and erase stuff. Instructables has a very careful community that watches out for this sort of thing. Not to mention the higher quality that comes from an entire community that cares, not just one or two honest people out of 100 prankstersGreat way to learn about diffrent cultures and interact with them. Instructables has helped me a lot in my school work. I've learned a bit from UK from kiteman, and a lot of people know that I ask for a lot of homework help in the forums! My point is that this site is mainly a self improvement center, not just for a house or project, all these things just help improve ourselvesI'm thinking that each step could be a place. If there are a lot of things from one same place, there would be a couple of different steps. We could have an index in the intro that links to each country's steps. We could provide a bit of history, culture, society and Pictures!Ok now you can talk

My kid broke his arm, is getting a cast tomorrow, should I try to add some LED's?

My 6 year old broke his arm on friday night, they can't do a fiberglass cast until tomorrow. I was thinking what if I prewired an ultra bright LED and ask them to wrap it into the cast with just the led poking out. I was thinking I could decorate his cast to look like Buzz Lightyear's arm with a "laser". The wire could come out the top that I could connect a battery pack to so he can turn it on and off. Is this a good idea or not too smart? I'm trying to think of ways to make my son feel a little better about having a cast for 8 weeks.

OK, Let's clarify some things....

1) OK, I will clarify this after it confused me for so much time. For those of you who didn't know,Eric and canida are marriedI tell you this to help you avoid all the stuff I went through. I saw a lot of things that pointed towards this fact, but nothing actually confirmed it. I didn't have the courage to ask here, if I was wrong, the embarrassment would be too much.... So there. What happened to Stasterisk?Star Simpson is a girl that strapped a fake bomb to her and tried to go through an airport. It was a circuit board with play doh attached to it in certain spots. She is currently a student at MIT, which explains the website url. So if you want to get more of an idea of who this Star Simpson girl is. Check outthis pageAnd this ibles postMy name is BryantAlthough, I think Gorillazmiko made that quite clear. Get over it.

Chatroom abuse

The Chatroom can be easily abused. The 'Warning" system does not have any requirements, which means that anyone can warn someone for no particular reason. Each time a person is warned more than 4 times in a row, that person is muted for a specific amount of time. Each 4 more warnings is punished by 5 minutes of being muted. Meaning that if someone is warned 8 times, that person will be muted for 10 minutes. Some persons are abusing this system and warning people for no reason. Yesterday, I was warned 32 times. Mostly it wasLittlechef37Okoshima.Linuxh4xor (3 times, as part of the fun. Still, you jerk)The consequence of their joking, was that I was muted over 5 times.....almost 25 minutes (not in a row though)This kind of people simply ruin the experience.I know the chatroom has nothing to do with instructables, just meebo. But because of those jerks, the 32 warnings will now follow me forever (the chatroom tracks your IP adress) and if I am warned in the future, the punishes will be more severe. (Permanent banning from the chatroom is actually possible if a member is warned too much)

Help making this..

I want to make a sort of ball, to put my camera inside. The point would be to be able throw it, to get an "action" sort of look. I was thinking of making a ball or using some sort of plastic ball. The camera would be held in place by a screw. The inside of the ball would be filled with something to cushion the impact. Any ideas, suggestions or items already available?
