Contests for Kids?

Ok, why shouldn't there be a contest, for kids 0-16 year olds... this is because many contests contains electric things like circuit boards and programming where many kids like me cannot understand at all! Also, why couldn't kids enter most contests, such as the back to school contest. This is why I believe there should be contests or challenges that  kids can enter.  Comment below if you have any suggestions or disagreements.

Kids Robotics

I want to work with my daughter to build a fun robot but it seems like there are some many choices out there for platforms, controllers, software etc. I think I'm leaning towards a platform from DFrobot. http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=product/product&path;=37_111&product;_id=97#.VaL4sZNVhBc And an Arduino based controller like this, http://www.dfrobot.com/index.php?route=product/product&path;=35_104&product;_id=1176#.VaL45pNVhBc To control and make it move I'm thinking that Ardublock could be a good choice. http://blog.ardublock.com/ I'm curious if this community has any thoughts on my choices... or alternative ideas. Thanks, Phil

Kids and Tobacco? Answered

How do I deal with teens that want to try tobacco? I don't want them addicted, but I don't want to inspire disobedience and rebellion. It's not a moral issue with me, but it is an health issue. Ocassional tobacco use doesn't bother me at all, but addiction is unhealthy. So what to do... Forbid them? Let them try it? Yell at them? Ignore it?

Pallets for Kids

I have a whole bunch of kids - roughly 11yo - doing an upcycling project. We'll be in a workshop but obviously don't want them using too much that could hurt them (and get me sued). I have two hours. Ideas for simple but not rubbish pallet (or pallet wood) ideas?

The Kids Are Alright

Via The Sietch BlogIf I asked you if giving up your car and plane travel (permanently) was a sensible solution to global warming, most people of adult age (lets say 20+) would have a hard time doing that. However the next generation, the ones who are really going to be screwed by the ill effects of the global climate crisis see things a little differently."new generation of green teenagers are prepared to support radical measures to help the planet, says a new study.A survey of 16- to 19-year-olds by the Future Foundation found more than one in eight (13%) supported a ban on travelling by air for leisure purposes, while one in 10 say they would back a ban on cars if global warming continues to worsen.Almost 10% even say they would be prepared to take part in guerrilla activities carried out by environmental groups.Meanwhile others - primarily girls - are so eco-conscious they have developed a whole new strand of teen insecurity: "green angst", defined as anxiety about one's eco credentials. Others said environmental awareness even influences their choice of friends and partners. The report was conducted on behalf of the National Lottery to inform funding of environmental projects."It might sound like these kids have lost their minds, supporting guerrilla organizations?! But when you consider the kind of world they are going to inherit it makes perfect sense. If you knew that your parents generation was going to leave you a doomed world, you might be a little pissed. No one wants to grow up to inhabit a mad max movie.According to the study released today by The National Lottery (UK organization), half of 16-19 year olds (50 per cent) want plastic bags banned completely, 71 per cent think that unnecessary packaging on food should go, and 13% per cent want a ban on traveling by plane for leisure purposes. While a quarter (24 per cent) think there should be increases on the taxes and tolls affecting cars, one in ten is prepared to go even further and would support a complete ban on cars if global warming continues to get worse.Read more here.

Read with your Kids

Hey this is Brett. I have something that's extremely important for you to know. You need to READ with your KIDS! You need to do it regularly! You need to do it at the same time each day! It's been proven that kids who are read to by a parent can read better, earlier! In this day and age far too many kids are dropped off at a daycare and plopped in front of a TV set. I remember the good old days, growing up on the farm. As a four year old I remember settling down with Mom in front of our wood-burning stove. I would stare at the dancing flames as Mom would read "Dick and Jane" to me. The older children would do something constructive like a jigsaw puzzle or draw pictures at the kitchen table. Dad would sit off to one side of the room and carve us some small animal figures out of walnut. Thinking back to those days really brings back those feelings of warmth and security. It tears my heart out to think about my grandchildren and what they might have to look back on. Instead of the glow of a cheery fire and the safety of Mom's lap. They might look back and only remember the cold glow of the computer screen and the uncaring embrace of a beanbag chair. Once again, Please. Please read to your children. This really works! Books on tape just don't cut it. I read to my own children every night from the books they picked out. They've grown up now and are starting their own families. I hope that they'll think back to their nights with Dad and pass on this tradition of reading to their kids. Thanks, Brett.

Distant projects with the kids

Hey everyone. So I'm back on the road for work and hundreds of miles from my amazing wife and awesome minions. It's hard traveling for work and being the husband and father the family expects you to be. So my wife came down to visit for the weekend and I got to thinking. My daughter loves building things and doing electrical projects. So I took the wife to the local hardware store and sent her home with parts and pieces. This week my daughter and I will be building a lamp for her nightstand. I bought her a 1/2" NPT flange, a 10" 1/2" galvanized pipe, a 1/2" coupling, a 1/2" to 1/8" adapter, a 1/8" nipple, an 8' lamp cord, and a lamp socket with a turn key switch. She put it together tonight to get an idea of how it will go together. She's super excited and happy to be doing a project with dad albeit over facetime. It should turn out pretty good. Guess why I'm posting is I just need some community. The hotel room gets lonely and there isn't much to do unless I'm working. So I'd like to strike up some conversations and just learn some new stuff. Thanks for the support and the great uploads. You're all a huge inspiration. Thank you.

Kids today are computer whizzes? Answered

-BUT are they, it seems to me that many, if not most, lack a lot of very basic skills, they may be able to poke around and get something going, but half of that is down to the manufacturers making it easier to connect things up. What's your opinion is the sub 20 year old population at the cutting edge of computer technology??

Honey, I Shrunk The Kids

So my office goes –ALL OUT- for Halloween. Everyone dresses up, each team chooses a theme, and decorates as if they’re filming a blockbuster movie. There are prizes, sure, but everyone just wants bragging rights for a year. In the 3 years I’ve worked here, my team has won 2 out of 3, and I’ve won best costume at least once (had to throw that out there; bragging rights, ya know). Anyway, this year my team and I really want to do Honey, I Shrunk The Kids theme with a huge ant, huge grass, etc. But I am unable to find any instructions or similar projects online to help with ANY of these things. I am needing: instructions and/or ideas. Get creative for a moment and give me some ideas that we can use to turn our gray, cubicled area into a HISTK set. Thanks in advance!

Kid climbs walls with vacuum cleaners

A boy in the UK uses a couple of vacuum cleaners to climb walls like Spiderman. It's an amazing thing for a 13 year-old to do and... wait a second. This is just a copy of something that was demonstrated on TV in the UK well before this. So let's start over. A boy in the UK shows that you can get some media attention for doing a recreation of something that's already been established as amazing, even in the same country. Pretty shameless. Kid wins $10k for K'NEX rollercoaster

Ian Culhane won $10,000 for designing a 7-foot-tall toy roller coaster. Not bad for a 10-year-old."It's money for college," the aspiring engineer from Olympia, Wash., said Thursday about the savings bond.Ian's creation was on display at the Toys "R" Us store in Times Square, where he accepted the prize from the president of K'NEX Brands, a building toy company in Hatfield, Pa.The boy, who first started playing with building sets when he was 4, was one of thousands of children ages 6 to 12 who entered the annual contest.Ian began the project last summer, using 6,000 plastic parts from his collection of 15,000 to assemble the roller coaster, which runs through the body of a dragon. Two months ago, his parents packed it up and shipped it off for the contest. Just recently, his parents told him he won."It was like, whoa! Huh? I didn't think I'd win, 'cause there were so many other good ones," he said.A panel of judges comprised of K'NEX employees selected semifinalists based on the creativity, uniqueness and detail of the projects. It had to be made exclusively from K'NEX parts. An online vote determined 10 winners and Joel Glickman, an inventor with the toy company, chose Ian as the grand prize winner. The nine others each won $1,000 savings bonds. In New York for the first time, Ian, his 14-year-old sister and their parents stayed at a hotel he called "pretty fancy for us. We always stay at a Motel 6."While he was disappointed he couldn't spend any of the prize money, his father, a hydrogeologist, gave him $100 to spend at a toy store. What will he buy? More plastic building parts.link
