Good kits?

Off in another thread we were talking about goodkits being a good way to get your feet wet with the practicalities of electronics: how to solder, what the individual bits look like, and so on. I was lamenting the demise of Heathkit - many a engineer in my generation had their first electronics experience putting together one of Heath's kits, using their excellent instructions. So anyway, what kits are available today that offer the hobbyist a "good" and educational building experience? The kits should have good quality PCBs and components, instructions that go far beyond "solder all the components to the board in the places indicated by the silkscreen", and hopefully some amount of theory on how the thing works, and how to troubleshoot it if it's NOT working.I'll recommend:Lady Ada's stuff - I'm not sure I'm wild about online vs printed instructions, but it certainly gives you a good chance to see what you're getting into before you order anything, and it probably permits a higher level of quality in the instructions than it would be cost-effective to have printed.2Dkits Blinkies - a more limited selection, 2dkits specializes in neat little LED badge-like things

TinyTimer Kit

This guy, Brian Greul is trying to launch a business offering hobbyist kits. He's trying to fund his start up on kickstarter and the first kit is a micro controller based repeating timer kit that can be programed with switches or potentiometer or with Arduino.   This looks like exactly the timing circuit I need and many others can utilize as well. Problem is that if he doesn't get funded we will not likely get our hands on a TinyTimer anytime soon. He is 2/3 pledged toward a $2,000 goal but the funding period expires early Aug 29. I've been hand wiring 555 timers, some with 4017 decade counters to make timing circuits since the early 80's but I still haven't really explored the Arduino well enough to use micro controllers for the same purpose. There is no kit anywhere that will fill the gap like the TinyTimer promises. I feel that a lot of folks can just push the "Easy Button" with the TinyTimer. Please visit kickstarter.com and search TinyTimer. A pledge will get you a kit or assembled timer in November. If the kit becomes available to the public I will create an instructable for my CoolAzz Chiller which earned me an Editor's Choice Blue Ribbon at the 2007 Austin, TX  Maker Faire. Please hurry, he only has 10 days left before the funding ends.

LEGO Kits

I'm putting together a few kits to make a LEGO Candy Dispenser. LEGO is usually pretty expensive but I'm trying really hard to make them all reasonably priced so I'm still working out what to charge for them.  My real question though is whether or not LEGO kits would have much demand. I would like to put together kits based off of my other Instructable projects like Bendy Lego because I know it can be difficult/pricey to get enough pieces for projects like that in the traditional way.  Any feedback about kits you would like to see made, either from projects I have already posted or something entirely new, or any tips would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for reading and be sure to keep a lookout for the candy dispenser kits which I'll try to post by the end of this week.

Fire Kit

Here's an idea for a fire kit, not necessarily for survival or emergency. Someone want to make an ible out of it ? The idea here is that a coke can, once  completely dry, could provide both lightweight waterproof storage for tinder and lighting , and  also be an item to help structure the fire layout to provide proper draft and heat containment, . After the can is  dry you could stuff in some matches and cotton lint or vaseline balls, maybe a magneium stick. Maybe an obviously small candle.  Some items may need wrapping.  Then duct tape the hole When it came time to use, open with a knife. How exactly I would use the can to structure the fire is an open question.

No printed instructions for a kit

Would not having printed instructions put you off buying a kit ? I put together a coke can Stirling engine kit, but I don't know whether to print instructuctions or have them on the website. Printing them myself would probably increase the cost by a fair bit as my cheap inkjet printer really eats expensive ink (must by new printer - but they are evil).  The assembly isn't really complicated. Your opinions please!

go kart kits

I'm going to build a go-kart kit and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to buy.I found this go cart. I would like to build it myself but for that price (400 dollars) I rather buy that than spend 800+ dollars on something not as good as that.Bottom lineI found a nice go cart for 400 U.S. dollars. I would like to build a kit but not spend more than 400 dollars and that at least performs as well as the one in the above link. The kit has to total less than 450 dollars and have everything I need. Thanks Jrb

Online Electronic Kits

Hello, I am starting a  non-profit organization and I want to sell electronics kits on the internet but what sort of legal issues would I run into? I'm looking to sell plasma speaker kits, tesla coil kits, other dangerous kits, and some not, etc. I know that you could technically be sued if someone got hurt using something they bought, and what can I do to prevent this. I'm not exactly looking for the, "Buy liability insurance!" answer, I'm looking more for the, "Put a 'I am not responsible for your actions' type thing!" What can I do to be safe, what can I not do to not be safe? Thanks!!!

Jewelry Box Kits

I'm looking for feedback from the DIY crafting/woodworking community. I'd like to know what you all think of our artisan designed jewelry box kits. I've looked around and what I've seen in this market is pretty slim pickin's. Our kits don't require a shop full of tools, just what the average homeowner might have in his/her tool chest. There is also a short list of supplies. The kits require no cutting or power tools at all. The things that are required are self confidence, a sense of excellence and attention to detail. Our company is called Ready To Build. I have designed every box and we make absolutely everything in-house. It would be great if you would check out the website and give us any feedback or ask questions. Thanks!

LED Throwies Kit?!?!

I was surfing some electronic websites this morning and I came across a kit that looked surprisingly like an LED Throwie. Except that this was called an LED "Art Object" Kit.LED "Art Object" KitHere is the description of the kit:Kit consisting of a small 3V BR2032 Lithium battery, a 10mm clear lens blinking red LED and a small rare earth super magnet. No soldering necessary -Just connect up the LED to the leads of the battery. Use clear tape (not included) to attach the super magnet to the battery. You are now ready to throw your miniature bright red "piece of art" onto any steel structure where it will flash for days. Complete with magnet, LED, battery and diagram.

bike booster kit

There is a project here on how to build a "BIKE BOOSTER KIT". The kit is made up of multiple 3d printed parts, including the battery pack, charger, test equipment, and a choice of small or large rc notor. The built kit is designed to mount above the front tire either bike or trike. Although I do not know what kind of bracket is included for mounting. It can be configured to fit in a bike frame in any number of positions as long as the roller can touch the front tire. I plan to mount this on a trike, There are only two possible locations, on the handlebar stem, or the fork center hole for the fender after fender has been removed. I need mounting instructions, user manual, premium hardware kit, any special mounting brackets, and sources as to where I can buy a fully assembled kit charged and ready for mounting. I am concerned that the unit is not long enough to reach the tire from the stem. I might need some sort of extender block to make it longer. Complete advice please. reeltoreelguy@gmail.com.  photo included.

Wire Wrapping Kits

I can make you a kit for any of my wire jewelry projects. I have the nest and the basic cab kits already, since I teach those, but I can assemble what you need for any of my wire jewelry instructables. Gemstones will be whatever is in my studio at the time, though you can tell me what kinds of things you like. This will hopefully take the anxiety out of not knowing how to get started. Kits usually cost about $3o - $40 plus shipping. Just contact me through instructables if you want one.

Solar Generator Kit

We're now offering solar panel kits - 45 watt, 65 watt, and 85 watt - when combined with a battery pack makes a great solar generator for emergencies or for fun. Solar Pax generators are the 'bigger brother' of the Qwik-Solar.   Solar Pax has very minimum assembly - and everything is already wired with quick connects.  Use to charge any battery pack with a 12 volt outlet.  We make these kits in Ohio. We set up a 'Mini-Catalog' on our website to make ordering easy. And we put together a page on our other site "Lamp Light from Sunlight" you might enjoy - it shows a 'Solar Pax' from 1954.   Update:  We've changed some domain around to better reflect our solar generator line up - the 'lamp light from sunlight' link above is active again.

Solar Power Kits

Another Big Update! We've come a long way since 'How to Build a Qwik-Solar' (Over 9,000 views - Awesome!).  Qwik-Solar has now 'grown up' and become the iPower Station, producing more power - with easy to assemble frame kits and complete power packs. They can charge any power  pack with a 12 volt outlet and include key safety features (switches and fuses) for worry free use.  We've made it one of the best portable solar generators which can be used for cookouts, camping, tail gate parties, and emergency power. For industrial mobile solar power - We've teamed up with McGivern to provide solar Work Pods - with up to a 1,000 watt array! Last, we have Suntigo micro-grid kits for homeowners (with exciting news coming soon on new systems!)     iPower Stations are available from 45 Watts up to 85 Watts, with or without a power pack. Find all our solar generators here: Solar Mak And Thanks to everyone that's made Qwik-Solar such a success!

Crater Cutter kit

My challenge is to produce a reliable 10kV spark generator which will cut me craters with a plasma arc. You can see the general idea on my blog: http://www.wikihow.com/Etch-Your-Own-Crater? The 10kV spark generator is my missing ingredient, so Instructables please step forward with a design! Once running we can re-create any planetary feature by means of Cathodic or Anodic erosion. I believe this is a genuine alternative to the current 'impact crater' scenario, so favoured by astronomers.
